actually a soft material is less likely to break on an impact than a hard one. They are "soft" because they are more malleable, and will therefore dent, bend or otherwise deform when hit with a sharp impact. A hard material cannot deform and instead just breaks. I'm not sure if there was a terminology mismatch on this discussion, but I thought the clarification may be pertinent to the discussion.
