Yeah, that didn't happen with me at all. Our game was a soft PG (OOC not-so-much, but nothing vulgar or anything) the whole way; I would've been comfortable with my sons being there.

That said, my game was loving awesome. I did this back-to-back with a Pathfinder Beginner Box, and the lack of structure and ability to just set things up on the fly just translate wonderfully to the universe. Our GM (Mike Olson, if gold stars are to be passed out) was completely on point and funny and just ran things perfectly. Obviously the GM has a lot of control over any RPG, but the open-endedness of this system lends itself to some...creative...GMing, and everything was just hilarious and great. I became Covered In Monkeys. TWICE.

So, yeah. I will run this game into the *ground*.

I think at our print and digital price points, which are both lower than standard, the royalty to Scott and I works out to roughly the same for either version. Our advice is to grab it on the format you prefer.

Yeah, Mike is the head designer basically because I read his FATE edition of Kerberos Club and it impressed upon me three very important things:

1) FATE is just right for Robo.

2) Mike is brilliant at working with FATE.

3) Also he's hilarious.

So here we are!

The whole Jack Tarot training subplot in Vol 5 exists so you'll realize that's the gun Robo's been using for 80 years just in time to understand what a loss it is for him in Vol 6. Twist that knife!

I think the saddest part of Vol 6 for me is when Robo tells Sparrow and company to run in the last issue. It's not a big moment in itself, but it's when he's made up his mind about what needs to be done and it's just awful.

The game is very much designed to make new characters on the fly as often as your group likes, including almost constantly.

It also support long form campaign play, so whatever makes sense for your group will work fine. I'd also like to at least mention some of the alternative assumptions about the game within the text just to make sure they're explicit. Stuff like: "Hey, you can play as a rival group like Majestic 12." Or "What if Robo disappeared when he defeated the Shadow From Beyond Time?" And so on.

Bumping the thread with a question about the RPG. Hyperactive you said once that it was going to be possible to play as any organization you felt like playing as so in theory could you use the Robo book to play an XCom style game? The quick character creation would be perfect for playing a game where players drop like flies.

We're intending to make it possible to play as agents from any organization from the pages of Atomic Robo, or any organization that could be found there.

There's also rules for how those organizations can support or hinder characters in the field, and how they'd change during the course of play, so yes, you could easily fake an XCOM game.

Neat! I'm kind of excited for the release of it. Other than the bad GM I had fun with my playtest at Gencon. Will it have additional fluff for the series in it too? If it does I won't feel too bad if it doesn't get played often/ever. The guys I try and play with assure me they want to play things, get a day off to play it, but then plan something else on that day instead leaving me with a game but no players.

I looked for this thread month or two back and didn't find it. Figured we didn't have an atomic robo thread since I don't usually see many inde books here with their own threads.

Anyway, just wanted to mention, I learned about robo from the team fortress 2 read, someone there posted a page of the tf2 crossover and I got super curious and had to hunt down that issue.

Which I read then immediately bought all 7 volumes and the first issue of "flying she-devils." It was a fantastic read for my family vacation and I am waiting for vol. 8 for the Dr. Dinosaur arch so hard.

I'm now torn though, buying issues in print help out you guys and the local shop, but digital is cheaper and so much easier. Going to probably switch to digital for vol. 8 and buy the physical trades.

We're often asked by readers which format they should purchase to best support us: digital, floppies, or trades.

The honest answer is: GET ALL THREE.

But the realistic answer is: the royalties Scott and I get from each format are so close to each other that it makes no functional difference on our end which one you get. Buy what works best for your needs.

Good to know, I like others think I'm going digital for vol. 8 then picking up the paper trade. At this point of my life I can't justify piles of comics taking space when I'm buying the trades already.

Well, there's 6 TPBs in print currently, and two different seventh ones upcoming

The TPB collection of the anthology series Real Science Adventures was just solicited, so that'll be a seventh book. The other seventh collection will be the Vol 7 TPB. That should be out in Dec. Possibly Jan. Don't recall. We'll start up a new batch of RSA issues somewhere in 2013. Probably sooner rather than later. This time they'll be one-shots instead of shorts.

Right now we're in the middle of powering through a couple little Robo side projects before Scott delves into the art for Vol 8 and I tackle the script for Vol 9.

Already bought Issue #2 as well. More comics should have their first issue for free so you can get a feel for what it actually is, three preview pages doesn't cut it.

I just got a copy of The Manhattan Projects in the mail and I've been blowing through it, figured it was worth mentioning because I'm digging it and it's reminding me of Atomic Robo in a lot of ways. It's much more of a "secret history" motif than Robo's "super-sized ants are real and everyone knows it, let's go punch them", and tonally it's a lot darker than Robo (and some of the characters are downright hosed up), but it's still got its fair share of silly/over-the-top moments and by and large the main focus of the series is "crazy action-science", complete with a bunch of real-world scientists as main characters (Oppenheimer, Feynman, Einstein, Fermi, Von Braun).

I'm not exactly keen on the art, but it's far from a dealbreaker.
