~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Realm Year 786, the Realm is in chaos. The Scarlet Empress has vanished. The Dragons may not know it, but their days are numbered. At the edges of civilization, heroes have started to reappear. Wreathed in gold and silver, they are coming to reclaim their rightful places. Call them Anathema, call them saviors, call them what you will, you cannot call them meaningless.
They reject the idea that the Dragon-Blooded are Princes of Creation. The Chosen of Gaia know from experience; the Chosen of Sol know it in their bones.
Ten-Thousand Dragons and the Wyld Hunt? They don't care about the odds against them. They were Chosen to kick logic out and do the impossible!
The Bureaucracy of Fate? These are the ones who will burst straight through heaven and earth, and even tomorrow. They are sustained by willpower; even when mocked as reckless and crazy. If there's a wall in their way, then they smash it down. If there isn't a path, then they carve one themselves!
The Neverborn? These heroes have their hopes and dreams etched into their bodies, transforming the infinite darkness into light. Unmatched in Heaven or Creation; equal to the gods themselves! Do you really think they're going to run? Or surrender?
The Yozis? The tomorrow they're trying to grab for themselves is not the tomorrow the Primordials would set up for them; it's the tomorrow that they chose for themselves, a tomorrow that they chose out of all the infinite possibilities!
The Raksha? These men and women are not supporting characters in someone else’s story. They do not need to believe in someone who believes in them. Each of them believes in the “me” who believes in “myself!”
Even if all of Heaven, Creation and Beyond are against them, they will force their way down a path they choose to take and do it all themselves!
They are…
THE HEAVEN-PIERCING DEFENDERS OF CREATION!
You have gathered in an abandoned village a day’s journey south of Nexus, guided by your respective patron and your own reasons to seek out others of your kind. All of you have seen the state of Creation under the heel of the Realm; even here in the Scavenger Lands, the Realm exerts a peculiar sort of gravity. However, you have also seen the depredations of spirits, gods, Fair Folk and other Things; demons, hungry ghosts, servants of nameless horrors and more. The Mask of Winters looms large to the West, and the Guild tugs on silken cords, forcing whole economies to dance out a puppet show. There are more mundane threats, too. Disease, wild beasts, starvation… All of these things are far too real, and confine humanity to small clusters, huddled against the dark and the raging storms outside.
As you settle into your new alliance, however uneasy it may be, you all feel a sense of something powerful. Something new. You have been Chosen, and now, you have allies to supplement your power. For the first time, maybe in years, maybe ever, you have a sense of hope. A sense that, maybe, you can actually take control of your destiny. That you are not bound to accept Creation as it is. That you can make it more.
It is in that spirit of optimism that you hear Towering Brier’s speech, full of rousing words and lofty goals, exhorting you to greatness. Unfortunately, before his words can fully sink in, Silence of Stilled Breath skids panting to a halt by the forge, bearing news:
“It’s worse than we thought…”
As he pauses to catch his breath, his follow-up is interrupted by a motley of grotesquerie and beauty erupting from the surrounding woods. Inhuman eyes stare curiously as the Raksha host arrays itself before you. A wind swirls into existence, burning ribbons of gossamer whipping at silken-glass banners, and the cataphract leader steps forward, sword to hand.
“In the name of the Duchess of the Veridian Zephyr, Lady of the Shaped Mirror, Mistress of Amethyst Longings, and representative of the Court of Wood, I bid you name yourselves and present your purpose here.”
Whoops! Looks like you’ve got some Fair Folk to deal with. Ball’s in your court, guys.
Standard rules here, have your character name in bold at the top of all your posts, OOC/mechanical stuff in italics… the usual.
During combat, please have a statbloc accompanying all your posts which tracks health levels, Essence expenditure, WP spent, soak, DVs, etc.
Corpse runner
Towering Brier
Brier suppresses a grimace at the sight of the fae, and instead plasters a cocky grin on his face. Across his body the plain traveler's clothes he wears begin to retract into his bird-branded brooch, even as more garments flow out to replace them. A crimson cape unfurls at his back, depicting the roc-in-thorns of his anima glowing a bright silver. Deep purple cloth swathes his body, and across his neck and shoulders is highlighted with golden light.
"Since you were nice enough to introduce yourself, I'm Towering Brier, first among equals," he declares, one leg raised and cocked on Wanelight's seat. "We're the Princes of the Earth, and we're here to build a better world. Something we can do for you?"
Heavenly Glass Ally
Heavenly Glass Ally stands quietly, not eager to give offense. He thinks of himself as not a poor diplomat, being familiar with the court of the tri-Khan, but knows that Towering Briar exceeds him in diplomacy as the sun exceeds the moon (perhaps not the best analogy to use with Lunars about), and decides in this instance to let the more skilled diplomat handle the negotiation.
Twice-Polished Jasper
Jasper looked up from his work, and was rather amazed at the sight before him. He had finished his work, and was just about to free his essence from its charm-held pattern, but he looked at the remnants of metal that still hung in the air before him and concentrated.
It would take a little while, but perhaps he could turn that to the group's advantage.
"And I am called Jasper, and you have come at an auspicious time." he said, holding up the still forming piece of jewelry. "I have been forging tokens, and now I might now forge one for you, to mark this occasion."
Character Sheet
Spending six motes on the second Craft excellency and putting together an amulet of a human figure and the Raksha shaking hands. I'm hoping this will fascinate him, watching an act of Exalted art in the making. That could also buy time for a social attack.
4+3 successes. That should give me a princely amulet if an amulet counts as a Simple item, in around five minutes.
2 successes on an Awareness roll. Is anything hiding from us?
Lastly, if someone starts a fight, I get to (reflexively) hurl a javelin at anyone I beat with my Join Battle roll of 4.
For some Solars, a bitter hand to hand melee is a waste of time and energy
better spent elsewhere. Easily evading clumsy blows the Solar simply leaps
over an insignificant nearby object such as a building or small hill and
goes about his business elsewhere.
reduce DV by 1, resolve in step 9 and cannot be used with a counter attack.
forces and cannot retaliate. When the solar reaches limit break, he or
The albino woman finds herself struggling to keep from allowing a long, drawn out sigh of frustration from escaping her lips, partly caused by her situation, but mostly caused by hearing the one she's already started to think of as 'Straddling Noisemetal' beginning to make another speech. The woman automatically tunes it out, wishing that just once, just for one night they could pretend to be real people and stay silent!
Perhaps to distract herself she reaches down to a small pouch at her waist, made from what could charitably be called leather, and selects one of the strange little living things that swarm across the bizzare, alien landscape she's trapped and placed within and for a moment the silence is broken as a small, helpless furry creature ends its life with a squeak and a weak crunch.
The wind shifts and a faint scent catches her attention, an unnatural perfume that seems to linger long after it should have dissipated, a scent that seems to promise horrifying wonders and delights indistinguishable from nightmares, different yet oh so similar to the scent that the fair folk she hunted when the Destroyer chose to curse her wore.
Perfectly silently the woman starts to move, her pure white skin surprisingly effective camoflague in the ghostly grey shadows caused by the light of the moon shining down as she loops around the fair folk pack and hauls herself into a tree overlooking the ruined village and the visitors both. Surveying her companions for a moment she lowers herself back to the ground, scrabbling around the tree roots for a few seconds then scrambles back up and readies her arsenal, her twin axes in case the fair folk attack, and a double handful of thumb sized, rock hard nuts in case any of her 'friends' looks like they might begin making speeches.
She will wait for the others to make the first move. If the fair folk attack or are attacked she's going to wait a few moments so their full attention is on the group then she'll attack herself, either going after the largest threat with joint wounding attack and the cripple effect from her hatchets, or she'll flurry and do the same for the three next biggest threats, aiming to leave them crippled and disorientated. It's night and she's ambushing, so she gets +2 from her thrown speciality, and possibly +2 from her stealth night ambush speciality too.
If either of the lunars come under attack after that she'll switch to assisting them by crippling their opponents, as long as no one knows where she is or can see her. If she's driven out of concealment she'll stop, as she'd consider visibly helping the lunars to be a great insult to them.
If either Towering Brier or Najid Weiss look like they might start to make a speech they'll do it while a socially disfunctional woman pelts them with nuts. Hard.
Najid Weiss
Sprawled near the fire under a simple blanket was a man unsurprised. There was always another problem, always more of it than him, and always - always just as he would find a moment's peace. Same as it ever was for Najid Weiss.
With all the posturing between the smith, the stag, and the cock, the guys must have been awake too. Best to get this settled before they volunteered to try something stupid.
His body coils subtly as his hands slide to the ends of his staff. His head turns to where the wolf was resting nearby. His voice is still, quiet, focused. "You want the left or the right?"
Hey Fenrir, want to punch some elf?
Silence of Stilled Breath
They'd known. No way the Fair Folk had simply caught up with a Full-Moon Lunar in claw-strider form; they must have already been on their way when he started. Either that, or they'd used some sort of faerie witchcraft to cheat. Neither scenario seems especially implausible to Silence, and neither is a particularly comforting thought.
Resigned, he stands up straight and turns to face the faeries. The scale of the enemy is daunting, although it's hard to tell how many are actually real as opposed to illusions, there because whatever twisted script the Fair Folk are acting out requires the heroes to face a ravening horde. Jasper, Brier, and Heavenly Glass Ally are attempting diplomacy; Silence doesn't even have to look to know that Najid, Zelena, and She are spoiling for a fight. The Twice-Burned had readied swords and spears of iron the moment the horde appeared, but are waiting for his order.
Before he does anything else, Silence takes stock of the situation, making a rough assessment of the enemy's numbers. While Brier and Jasper talk, he takes a moment to meditate on the currents of essence flowing through his own being, harmonizing them with his anima. When Jasper finishes speaking and begins his work on the final medallion, Silence at last addresses the cataphract.
"I am called Silence of Stilled Breath, although I suspect you knew that already. Our business was with the brigand and slaver Ma'ig Marram, but, well..." He gestures at the blood dripping from the warrior's gossamer blade. Silence refrains from immediately launching into an attack only because Towering Brier would never let him hear the end of it if he spoiled the Eclipse Caste's precious negotiations. Instead, he waits for his opening.
Some combination of Wits 4, Perception 3, Awareness 3, and War 3 to assess the situation, then discreetly spending 6 motes of personal essence and one willpower on Instinctive Dexterity Unity. If a fight breaks out, Join Battle 7, then flurrying Deadly Beastman Transformation enhanced with Quicksilver Second Face and Claws of the Silver Moon for a total cost of 10m1wp at Speed 4. If this is all after a day of shapeshifting and spying with a short battle thrown in, how much essence/wp have I already used?
First Night's Camp - Encounters of the Raksha Kind
The Raksha noble nods, once, at Towering Brier's transforming wardrobe and Jasper's creation of the token. "Well met, Chosen of Creation. I am called Carwo Argoelion, servant of my Lady Duchess Arianrhod Creugeni." Though the glass daiklave still rests its point on the ground, he spins it idly as he speaks, moonlight and firelight breaking into sparkling motes of crystal ribbon. As he speaks, a hobgoblin stares at Jasper's medallion, transfixed.
He turns his attention to Silence of Stilled Breath. "We make it a point to know when interesting events may be afoot in our duchy, and a group of Chosen of the Sun and Moon..." Carwo grins, revealing quicksilver-white teeth. "Well. Let us say that my Duchess is keenly interested in what happens next."
"As for the slaver. He had made a contract with my Lady, and was attempting to renege. Not only that, he was to deliver the mortals in his keeping to my Lady Duchess's rival, the Lord Baron of..."
The daiklave lashes out, sending a hobgoblin sprawling with the flat of the blade.
"Forgive him, Prince Jasper. He forgets his place, but he is not malicious. He was fascinated by your fine work, and neglected his manners."
He taps the blade against his pauldron, before letting it rest on his shoulder. "Now... where was I? Oh, yes. The brigand."
Twice-Polished Jasper
Though you're not sure, it seems like there might be something still in the woods.
Before you can take another look, however, the sight of the Raksha's blatant disregard for his underling touches a nerve. It seems like lords are the same, no matter where you are. Not even beings from outside of Creation escape the rule that commoners get abused. Before you can say anything, however, the situation changes...
Yeah, you're gonna gain some Limit from that one.
Only She Stands There
Though you don't understand what the Fair Folk warrior is saying, that doesn't stop you from keeping an eye on things. On the other hand, it is a little disconcerting when you realize that there's something perched on the tree roots, keeping an eye on you.
A curious-looking Raksha with a distinctly feline cast, brindled in various shades of grey, appears to study you. Huge, yellow-green eyes seem to glow in the moonlight, and her grin is far too large for her face.
"Enjoying the show, pretty one? Such a delight to find so many Exalts all in the same place." Her Flametongue is curious accented, and caresses your ear like an oiled bone-shard. Before you can answer, a blur of motion catches your eye...
Silence of Stilled Breath
This will probably turn messy. Jasper won't react well to the strategos' treatment of his soldiers, Brier will want to keep talking, and Heavenly Glass Ally is... not your greatest asset in combat. Still, there might be a chance to avoid a pitched battle so long as no one does anything too rash...
I'm assuming that everything up to the War Form transformation was out of Personal Essence, and that (and everything after it) was Peripheral. Based on your description of the short battle, I'm guessing that your dude used the same BATTLE MODE: ACTIVATE that you described in your post. Conveniently, following the switch to claw strider, that means your Anima activation was free. That leaves you with:
Essence: Personal 4/23, Peripheral 38/52
Will: 8/10
Najid Weiss, Fifth and Final Hand
You've heard that you should always try diplomacy first, but that only applies to real people. The Raksha are too slippery to be trusted, and are only good for one thing: punching bags. The weight of your staff is reassuring in your hands as you launch yourself against the horde.
4 successes for BATTLEJOININ'. 6 successes on the ambush! Your first attack is Unexpected!
Towering Brier
What gives!?! Here you were, having a perfectly nice chat with these polite Fair Folk, and that hot-tempered idiot Najid has to go and ruin it! You expected it from the wolf-bitch, but...
Gain a point of Limit.
EVERYONE
Hostilities have commenced, people.
Post your Join Battle rolls, if you haven't already. I'm okay with either InvisibleCastle or Orokos, and I'll have the Battle Order chart up next post.
Thesaurasaurus: 3 successes for your JB roll.
Twice-Polished Jasper
Jasper made a voice in his throat that was almost a growl. It was a sound like gravel grinding in a pit. "You should not have done that."
In front of him, with a finality of essence, the token changed from a man greeting a larger figure to a man cowing a larger figure.
Seemingly instantly, Jasper tossed his hammer into the air and his hands had moved behind his back, grabbing a pile of javelins. Seven, to be precise, one for each member of the party. He spun, and with impossible speed the seven were transferred to to his right hand one at a time. They lingered there no more than an eyeblink before being flicked away like so much chaff, but that flick sent each one hurtling at lethal speed towards his foes.
He caught the hammer out of the air. "One must respect one's followers, for without them, one is nothing."
"You may surrender when you feel you have learned that lesson." He brought his hammer up, aiming to knock his opponent silly with a blow to the chin. The arc of the hammer trailed essence as Jasper seemed to grow more powerful. He was not a mere smith any longer, he was closer to a hero of legend, dominating the battlefield. He glowed like a tiny star amidst the horde.
Forgot two dice from my specialty, which bumps my final Join Battle roll to 6.
Anyone I beat, I get to attack. I also don't need to spend an action to draw or switch weapons. First attack at the Raksha, rest of them at any soldier-type minions I can see.
I am on the Internet.
Only She Stands There
Join Battle roll.
Of course there would be someone in the tree with her, it stands to reason. Everything that could possibly go wrong with her life has, so why not this as well? Some nights it isn't even worth digging yourself out of the sand. Of course, there is no sand here, just the dirt that the not people seem so fond of, and that just reminds the woman how gritty she feels right now, and that just irritates her further.
With a movement almost too quick to follow the albino sinks one of her axes into the tree branch in front of her, then reaches up to rub the bridge of her nose with a frustrated sigh of annoyance before recovering her axe and actually deigning to speak, all the while trying not to look at the fair folk while simultaneously keeping a close eye on her. It's tough being proper sometimes.
"She is of The People and does not speak to the lesser beings. She does wonder aloud what the dream thief wants, if it cares that the other dreamthieves are about to be carved into bits by the Chosen of Luna and above all how did it spot this one!?"
She's not going to do anything agressive towards the attacking group with one of the fair folk sitting right there next to her. If the elf doesn't seem agressive she'll try and drag a little information out of her.
The pawsting business is tough work.
Zelena Zheleza
Zelena had been bristling since the Fair Folk's mouthpiece had arrived, which is a visceral sort of experience that everyone gets to participate in when you're dealing with a Lunar.
She hears, rather than witnesses Weiss make his move. Breath hisses into his lungs, the calluses on his hands scrape as he makes a fist, his back foot grinds as he starts to shift his weight. It's as good an excuse as any.
She charges, and changes. The person that started the movement is gone by the time the beast reaches the nearest of the Fair Folk. In her place is something sleek and angry and laced with silver and dappled with rust.
The silver flashes and the beast's claws dig into one of the raksha's necks just long enough to haul it up for a War Form headbutt.
Join battle: One success. bleh.
Popping Terrible Beastman and Claws of the Silver Moon as a combo for my first turn. Because stunts are cool and I'm impatient, I went ahead and rolled an attack against a mook, using 1st Dex excellency at three motes with a heavy attack, for 14 (6 Dex + 3 MA + 3 Excellency + 2 Acc) dice. 8 successes. That should hold me for the next round or two of posts.
Zheleza attempts to fight in concert with Weiss and will pick targets accordingly. No other conditional actions yet.
"Send in Boxbot!"
Silence of Stilled Breath
Towering Brier trying to talk his way out of the inevitable fight: Check. Jasper losing his temper at a noble: Check. Only She Stands There nowhere to be seen: Check. Zelena and Najid using violence as a first resort: Check and check. It was surprising the first time it played out; by now, it might as well be choreographed.
The instant Najid leaps into action, Silence makes a hand signal that tells the Twice-Burned to find the most defensible position they can and hold it; as one, they run inside the largest building nearby and move to cover its entrances. A simple shorthand for complex ideas became necessary after his exaltation, because his war form lacks both a human mouth to give orders and human hands with which to gesture. In a flash, the Lunar nearly doubles in height as his skin is replaced by a silver-green exoskeleton and his hands extend into serrated blades the size of daiklaves. His anima swells into an argent bonfire swirling with shadowy, tessellated shapes, throwing his three-meter silhouette into stark relief.
He is ready for war.
Just flavor for now, plus tracking essence/wp expenditures and statblock changes. Something just occurred to me: would you allow negative mutations on war forms (in this case, No Opposable Thumbs and Mute) for more points, or would that be too cheesy?
Also, Desty, don't forget that with the Lethal Attacks mutation, if another effect would also make your damage lethal (in this case, CotSM), it instead adds +2 damage to affected attack forms.
Heavenly Glass Ally
Heavenly Glass Ally stands there, mouth agape, at how quickly a peaceful interaction turned to violence. It seemed unnecessary to him, and he hoped not all his future interactions will follow the same path. Knowing some of his companions, though, he's afraid they will. He's no warrior, and he knows it, so he just hopes he doesn't get himself killed before the rest of them are able to finish off the Raksha. Still, he decides, he can at least keep the enemy busy while the rest of them slaughter them. He pulls his daiklaive, and charges the nearest Raksha, hoping to at least catch it off guard.
Flurry. Drawing my weapon and then attacking. Spending 3 motes of essence on combat excellency to give myself 3 extra dice.
Najid Weiss
Fey sure had a lot of words for Hit Me. Offending all existence was their custom, Weiss would oblige.
He opens low and fast. A streak of golden light whips past Carwo, spirals around him, then rears up and flares to life before him as the sign of high noon. The Raksha tries to bring his sword to bare. He meets unexpected resistance.
Weiss unfolds his left hand, revealing the tip of his staff. "Watch the head, miss the tail." His wrist snaps, the sword wrenches from its master's grip and flies into the air. The sectioned staff's far end releases its prey and lands in Weiss' waiting palm.
The staff, the hand, the unconquered soul all flow in line. Here, one creature stands. The snake is poised to strike.
Making a 2-act flurry: Disarm attempt at (11-2+6) 15 dice, and adopt Snake Form. Will pop 4 motes to help parry any attack from Captain Smugelf. Both Smugelfs.
Towering Brier
There are a number of things he'd like to do to Najid right now, but Brier knows himself well enough to realize this is likely where he would've taken it anyway, given enough time. He swallows his scowl, instead hopping into a standing position on Wanelight's seat. Maybe it wasn't a total wash yet...
"Slavery?" he calls, sounding only unpleasantly surprised, looking for all the world completely unaware or uninterested in the melee that was beginning to break out. "Well we can't have that! We're going to need to be introduced to your Duchess. We need to renegotiate the terms by which she's allowed in our world. Someone should probably get her or tell us the way before my companions finish this discussion prematurely!" Brier flashes a smile, not at the representative before him, but at the host itself. One of them might still take the hint.
Brier rolls his shoulders and clenches his fists, his joints popping audibly as a soft, golden glow suffuses his form. He crouches on Wanelight, readying himself for any other hostilities.
Three successes on Join Battle. Brier is adopting Solar Hero Form, which costs 6m, takes 6 ticks, and reduces his DVs by 1 until his next action.
For future reference, all parenthesis in listed DVs denote his effective DV in close combat vs. enemies not using weapons with the R tag.
First Night's Camp Battleground
Though the Raksha commander is caught off-guard by the loss of his Sword, he does not waste time. His mien changes, a lunatic grin unfurling like a banner, terrible and ancient and promising death. His hand extends and the glass blade flies to reunite with its master.
"Hah! You wish to test the truth of my words, yes? To measure the strength of my soul by the blows of my arm?" The blade flickers like firelight, questing to find Najid's lifesblood as the subtle bells on the Fae's armor provide a jangling counterpoint to the light-show. The Fifth and Final Hand, however, proves skilled enough to parry the blows, golden Essence sparking as the staff thwarts the strategos' intent.
Two attacks, both parried! (No Essence expenditure necessary)
Everyone: If your Essence + Valor is less than 6, -2 to attack Capt. Smugelf.
Only She Stands There
The grinning Raksha continues to study you as the parley devolves to mκlιe. "Well, now, pretty one of the People. A Guide is not much use if she can't spot potential hazards, yes?" Her accent is fading, slowly adopting the cadences of the People.
The Grimalkin fades to painfully-colored Wyld smoke which wreathes around you; then her face reappears just over your left shoulder, whispering in your ear. "Besides, Chosen of the Sun. You are unique. A child of the desert, who hates and fears the rays of Sol Invictus, now Exalted as His killer and enforcer? Your story has the flavor of this one's original home."
She fully re-materializes, head cocked to the side, inspecting the glass talons on one hand. "So, this one does hope that the member of The People will forgive this one for her nostalgia. Sometimes, she desires to return home, but she will not until her debt to the Duchess is paid." The Grimalkin's eyes flash red, the timbre of her voice shifting to a disconcertingly menacing register.
"The will of the Duchess shall be respected. The Lady of the Shaped Mirror will extend her hand, and none will gainsay her purpose."
You're not entirely sure, but you think she might have been mocking you, before things went all wibbly and threatening.
Twice-Polished Jasper
Guided by your Essence, you hurl each Javelin into the ravening maw of the fae horde. The first grazes a hobgoblin, but fails to find purchase. The second, unfortunately, was not fully within your grasp, and not even the martial prowess of the Dawn's Chosen can compensate for your rush. It flies erratically toward your circle; Najid's Serpent-Sting Staff flicks lazily out and bats it aside.
Struggling to recover, you hurl another one, piercing a Hobgoblin, who dissipates into a wisp of Wyld energy, fading into Creation. Startled, your next javelin flies wide, burying itself deep into the ground, pointing back at you. You begin to adjust to the nature of fighting these creatures, a javelin striking the next three. Two prove to be illusions, but the third screams, and begins oozing glowing green ichor.
The as the last javelin leaves your hand, your golden hammer falls naturally into your grasp. The attack flows without pause as you spin once to gain momentum, twisting your body into the blow...
...Only to have the hammer rebound off of Argoelion's armor with a crash of cymbals and ringing of clattering bells.
For the Horde Duchess!
The hobgoblins come howling at you all, swarming like a maddened anthill and surrounding you all. They pass by Najid, engaged in battle as he is with their Lord, and several attempt to latch on to Jasper and the hated Lunars. Still others break off to attack the quiet one and the flamboyant Solar atop his steed, and a third group reinforces the other two with wicked-looking obsidian swords.
As you quickly discover, however, most of them are not real. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to pick out which ones ARE, especially while they're trying to rip you apart with tooth and claw and rough-edged sword. Through skill and luck, you evade or block most of their initial attacks. Jasper and Heavenly Glass Ally, however, are sufficiently confused by the illusions of the Fair Folk that they feel the bite of Raksha blades.
An Honor and a Privilege
Carwo Argoelion's grin remains, and though he keeps his sword pointed at Najid, he addresses Jasper. "Concern for the lowly! Marvelous! Oh, my Lady Duchess will love this! Ha!" The gossamer blade flickers forward thrice more, attempting to find a weakness in the Zenith's guard.
The first strike is a probing feint, slapped aside by Najid's staff. Argoelion flicks his eyes over to Towering Brier as he presses the attack.
"Terms of her entry?!? Hahaha! My Lady Duchess takes form as she pleases, and tends her flocks of mortals, like a loving gardener!" The strategos rotates the gossamer blade and ripostes with two quick slashes across the martial artist's bare torso, drawing a dark, angry red line of gore with the first attack. Najid manages to pull back just enough to avoid the return slash, however,; he feels the wind of it in between the sides of his new wound.
The Raksha commander returns to a ready guard, assessing the situation. His eyes had turned red with battle-lust, and flickered wildly, but there was still purpose there. The famed madness of the fae warriors had not taken him. Yet.
I'll hold off on resolving the next round until I get King Doom and A_Raving_Loon to throw in their next bits.
Thesaurasaurus: Yeah, I'll allow those negative mutations to allow you to gross greater positive mutations; obviously the net mutations points need to be the same.
Only She Stands There.
The white skinned woman sighs again, a more melancholy note than before, the inhhuman, grinning creatures words reminding the albino woman of her own predicament more than a little, and driving home the point that while she is still cursed she can never return to The People. As She ponders her options a series of whistling noises, the song of several projectiles whipping through the air blares out, followed by a series of screams and yells of glee, reminding the woman she really doesn't have a great deal of time for introspection right now. With a feeling of solidarity that's ore than a little unusual for her she turns her attention back towards the fight, again slightly inconvenienced by being forced to try and keep an eye on someone she can't look at as she speaks.
"This one finds herself wondering aloud once again, and emphatically not speaking to the fair one, pondering how much of the grinning ones debt would be paid off if, for instance, the grinning one was the sole survivor of the encounter, returning to her Dutchess with a story...."
The woman stops talking for a moment, allowing her words to sink in as she casually surveys the fight, watching a pair of hobgoblins fall to something she doesn't quite make out before continuing.
"A story that perhaps features the grinning one as the main character, the only one in the group the Dutchess dispatched to not only keep from attacking those she sought out of a desire to make the Dutchess appear foolish and weak, incapable of controlling her tribe, but to be the one who averted the crisis and walked away, mission complete, perhaps with a solars gratitude."
The woman takes up her axes again and takes aim at a distant figure, the leading fair folk noble, his laugh quite audible and quite, quite irritating, even here, before she speaks once again, almost as an afterthough.
"Of course, the Grinning One would have to prove her good intentions during the battle, as it would do her no good if there were..... contradicting accounts of events to inconvenience her."
Trying to convince Cheshire there that if she helps us win the fight she can go back to the dutchess the hero with her own version of what happened. If she does take a potshot at any of the other elves then She will open up on lord meanbad with a three action flurry using first thrown to add two dice to each attack and using observer deceiving attack on each, for three motes per action, plus one to supress anima effects for 12 motes total. If she hits then her hatchets cause lord meanbad to loose one dice per hit. attacks get +2 from her speciality, and another +2 if the stealth speciality applies as well as the thrown one (not sure if it does.)
If Cheshire attacks She then She will dodge obviously, then try her hardest to get out of the way and use easily overlooked prescence method to go back to being all sneaky.
If Cheshire doesn't attack the other elves and also doesn't attack She then She will avoid attacking anyone as well and keep talking.
Najid Weiss - Punchelf 2: Punch Harder
The Raksha dodges the first blow easily, hardly moving a centimetre to get out of the way. The second forces him to slide your Essence-infused hand to the side with his blade; however, he was not anticipating the ferocious speed of your attack, and left himself open! Unfortunately, even your mastery of Snake Style is insufficient in this case to penetrate the gossamer-glass armor encasing his form.
Realizing his error, Najid unslings his staff in a blaze of Essence, but the Wyld-born thing blocks. Najid's speed has pushed him to his limits, and the next one, two, three strikes slam into the body of the elf with thunderous crashes. Despite the fury of Najid's onslaught, Carwo Argoelion only looks slightly worse for wear, though there his formerly immaculate armor shows signs of use, now.
Grimalkin hisses laughter. "The pale one of the Sun misunderstands the nature of this debt and the role this one must play. This one represents her Duchess in all things. Everything she does in is her Duchess' name. Leading the Stag of Omens to the slavers attempting to deliver them to my Duchess's enemies, rather than allow my Duchess to free and care for them? That was the Will of the Duchess. Bringing them after the Changing One to assess the pale one and her friends? The Lady of the Shaped Mirror desired it."
The back of one of Grimalkin's gossamer claws caresses Only She's cheek. "If the Mistress of the Viridian Zephyr saw the pale one, she would desire the pale one, too."
Grimalkin's voice has become a silken purr, wreathes of pleasant fog growing in your mind, almost like incense. "If the pale one would come to meet our Lady Duchess, she might find a way to rejoin her People. To bring them to this land of food and life, away from the burning Sun. The Duchess is kind, and will take special care of the pale one."
You flinch, recognizing the honeyed words for what they are. Diving to the side, you wrap yourself in shadowy Essence, willing Creation to ignore you. As is your right, Creation obliges, enveloping you in protective anonymity within the forest.
Thwarted, Grimalkin sends up a shrieking cry, vanishing into an impossibly-colored green-purple wisp of smoke, threading its way through the battlefield, seeking the prey which had slipped through her claws.
Former Campground
Lit up like high noon from Najid's anima banner, the campground suddenly loses its shadows as Towering Brier's anima begins to build, pulsing within his muscles, proclaiming his readiness for battle and desire for Victory. He settles easily into the Form of the Solar Hero, preparing to throw himself into the teeth of his foes.
The shadows reappear, but they have an ethereal, protean quality now, as Zelena and Silence of Stilled Breath both erupt into their war forms. One is rage and tooth and claw, rending the hobgoblins around her; the other chitin and silver and scything fury.
Zelena contemptuously grabs one of the Hobgoblins that attempted to bite her, and it learns, forcibly and with great immediacy, why one does not try to bite one of Luna's Chosen.
8 successes! Hit! 2-die Stunt! 8L! Goblin dies!
Jesus, way to splat that fucker.
Though he is no warrior, at least by the standards of his Circlemates, Heavenly Glass Ally nonetheless refuses to back down in the face of the oncoming horde. Even the bite of the Faerie sword does not break his spirit. He swings, slashing a false hobgoblin and reducing it to nothingness.
3 successes, hit! No damage! Not a real Hobgoblin!
The Twice-Burned have fortified a building, a bristling hedge of iron holding any Wyld-born creature at bay. The White Lions stand behind them, studying their idol with rapt attention.
The remaining hobgoblins screech and swing again, hoping to bring the heroes of Creation down. Their swords, however, do not possess the Grace of their leader, and they cleave nothing but air.
Swording Hobgoblins: 3 sux! Miss all!
Twice-Polished Jasper
Jasper looked at the Fae before him and took his measure. Strong, fast, well armored. Not, however, invincible. His sword was sharp and strong, his armor inhumanly perfect, but Jasper was not known for giving up.
“Sun and Moon, let us show this glass-clad parody just who’s land this is. It is not yours, it is not ours, it is the land of its families and its caretakers, and we shall not let you walk freely among them.”
He made as if to lead a charge, moving towards the Strategos, but rather than aim his weapon at the Fae, he lunged and aimed past him, slamming his shining hammer into a crumbling wall. The mortar was old and fragile, and it would take little to send a few rocks toppling onto the Strategos. Jasper gave it a lot, his hammer resounding with the sound of a meteor hitting the earth.
“Now!”
Flurry time! I’m coordinating the 6 fighters in the group (Sorry, Glass) and then smashing a wall behind the Strategos to rain crap all over him, hopefully to lower his DVs. I’d happily do damage to him and crush some hobgoblins as well, but I mostly want to make him vulnerable.
War Roll: 4 Successes, 5 motes spent.
Melee Roll: 7 successes, + 7L, x2 = 28L. That would almost be enough to destroy an intact stone statue, so hope it will be enough, here.
So, 5 ticks after my turn comes around again, (tick 6 relative to my turn) everyone who attacks on that tick will pile cumulative -1 penalties to his DVs. I, for one, plan on opening up with a three-attack flurry just to open him up for the rear end-kickers of the group. Keep that in mind if this combat lasts for 6 more ticks.
Brier sneers at Carwo, as irritated about the ineffectiveness of Najid's attack as the Zenith himself as likely to be. "Alright then!" he cries, dropping down into Wanelight's seat, "we'll give you a taste! We'll give you the full mouthful!"
The first age vehicle roars as it fires into motion as abruptly as the blast from a firewand. It circles the Raksha and Najid, tires tearing up the earth as it builds speed and momentum. Finally, almost glowing with how Brier's faint anima display reflects off its polished orichalcum finish, it heads straight for Carwo. Brier leaps from his seat onto the front of the frame, and pats Wanelight's handlebars reassuringly before fixing all his attention on the fae, looking fully intent on running him down.
At the last moment Brier leaps down from the bike, planting his feet firmly on the ground. Clutching the handlebars in a death grip, he spins, using the force to swing the bike's massive hind wheel at the emissary's face!
Using Wanelight as an improvised weapon, and enhancing that attack with Fists of Iron Technique for 1m, improving his Accuracy by 1 and adding 2 Damage while turning it all into Lethal.
So, I got hit with a flash of inspiration/compulsion while procrastinating on the exam-writing. Lucky you!
Encounters of the Shaped Kind
The fae warrior gives a sharp, clear whistle, a descending chromatic scale. The hobgoblins pause for just a moment, readying themselves to support their lord. Carwo Argoelion’s grin has stretched his face shark-like, and his teeth have begun to lengthen and sharpen. “You would forbid us to walk freely? Hah! Ahahaha! Not even your past lives could do that, Sun-child. We are freedom, we are unbound travel; we are the very desire to explore!”
His grip on the glass daiklave shifts, ox-guard to long-tail guard with hands inverted, and he drops to one knee, burying the blade half its length into the soil. “No, Prince Jasper. You shall not deny us the freedom to walk the land. The land itself denies your freedom to move!”
His sword flashes, violently fracturing its interior purple light into prismatic beams. There is a ripple of brilliant green, a shockwave of Wyld energy through the ground, and the forest accelerates its reclamation of the village. “You claim to be Princes of the Earth?!? Then prove it!”
Trees and vines erupt from the ground, lush and vibrant and very much alive. Willows, oaks, ivy and wisteria; lianal tendrils and boughs stretch forth their fingers, sweet, almost cloying fragrances playing at your nostrils. Though the scent attempts to seduce you, it is not enough to prevent you from noticing the underlying truth: the boughs and vines are reaching for you. In moments, they will have you bound and helpless before the Raksha. Argoelion rises, assumes a Fool stance, and grins. “What now, children of Gold and Silver?”
You’ve got three options: stunt, Charm or get caught. This is not an illusion; you don’t get Wyld resistance. Anyone who gets caught will no longer be able to participate in the Coordinated Attack. I’m going to hold off on the next round of Hobgoblin attacks until I get your reactions to this and Mile’ionaha’s successful War coordination, and success or failure to Move Bitch, Get Out The Way will determine the final composition of the next Battle Order table.
Ironslave, I’ll hold your action for the Coordinated thing; you still need to avoid getting snagged by plants.
Twice-Polished Jasper
Even as the wall began to crumble under Jasper's blows, he had known that the Fae would not go down so easily. He saw the form it took as the great writhing vines came for him. He waited 'til the vines were nearly atop him before his stance suddenly shifted, his legs filled with bounding essence, and he took off into the air, the world illuminated with the vision of a celestial forge.
He leapt towards a falling stone then bounded off it, a pulse of fiery essence radiating as he did so, til he nearly struck a larger stone. He caught it with his hands and vaulted over it, trailing golden sparks. A vine reached towards him, and he kicked off it, propelling him high into the air. He was now many meters over the ground, and shone like a comet.
His hammer was in his hand, his target was at the end of his arc. Jasper began his ferocious descent to the earth. Around him, golden flames announced the doom of his foe.
Activating Monkey Leap Technique. Any time a vine reaches for me, I just use it as a platform to avoid it!
"Send in Boxbot!"
Silence of Stilled Breath
A verdant tsunami erupts from the ground as Silence finishes his transformation. Vines and briars, trees and nettles pour forth and surge toward the exalts, stinging thorns and lashing tendrils swatting and grasping at all in their path. A weeping willow grows upward in a flash, becoming in instants what a natural tree would reach in a century. A cluster of the tree's drooping vines twists into a vicious whip and swings for the Lunar's neck.
A surge of essence pulses through Silence's anima as he slides under the stinging lash and hurls himself at the willow's trunk with the speed and fury of a thunderbolt. His sickle-sharp forelimbs slice cleanly through the wood, severing the tree from its roots. As the mass of vegetation swells into a roiling sea of greenery, he leaps forward and plants his feet on the falling trunk, launching both it and himself forward toward Carwo.
The force of the impact carries the Lunar forward along with his makeshift surfboard, splattering a pair of hapless goblins on the way to the cataphract. He rides along the rising tide of vegetation, and as he reaches a peak, he leaps high into the air, his anima blazing in a silver contrail as he kicks the fallen willow toward his enemy. Carwo's grin spreads even wider across his face as he lazily shears the trunk in half along its length with his blade of crystallized nightmare. His smile vanishes when Silence descends like a diving raptor, the mantid's scything forelimb cleaving through the armor and meat of the Raksha's outstretched arm until it bites into the bone.
First, activating Relentless Lunar Fury with Wasp Sting Blur and Golden Tiger Stance for 5m1wp, reducing speed by 1, DV penalties by 3, and adding one success to all rolls. Next, attacking the tree twice, both times using a free Dexterity Excellency to add three dice - I'm not sure about the tree's stats, so I'm using the soak values for an oaken door and assuming that 34 health levels of damage is enough to cut through the trunk. Finally, an all-out leap attack at Carwo, using both of my excellencies at maximum effect (improved to nine dice for each by Relentless Lunar Fury and costing 15 motes) and channeling Valor for good measure. I don't know what his DV is after making that attack or suffering coordinated attack penalties, so damage is assuming I hit him exactly.
Tree attack 1: 14+1 sux. 17L.
Tree attack 2: 9+1 sux. 17L.
Carwo attack: 10+1 sux. 4L5L, assuming standard 12 soak for a cataphract and no stunt dice or extra successes on attack roll.
The pawsting business is tough work.
Zelena Zheleza
Zelena's war form is huge and terrible, but nimble, as befits a Lunar champion. The Full Moon is so intent on rending the Raksha's flesh that she simply chooses to get out of the way of its attack, stepping and bending with speed and torque that might shatter a mortal's bones, and resumes her assault.
She steps round a grasping vine and swings toward the lead fairy, dropping low and slashing with blinding speed on her way back up - properly executed, it would shield the approach of the others and improve the efficacy of their attacks.
Dodging the vines with Flowing Body Evasion for a perfect dodge, taking my mandatory move towards Argoelion, and making a flurry MA attack to deplete his DV. Using three motes on each attack with 1st Dex Ex for 15/14/13 dice total, base damage 10L, overwhelming 2. If attacked by the big boss before the attack goes off, I use Flowing Body Evasion again.
Full Moon anima is active, so I have double move rates and 10 Str for feats of strength. Who wants to watch me bench a yeddim?
In any combat situation, you can assume that Zelena is animated by You Yoshinari.
Subtle
Quick to Anger
First Night's Camp - No rest for the brazen.
A twice-burned jumps as a firm hand and a wild grin invade his personal space. Wild eyes shine in the light of battle as a white headband settles in above them. "Well, drat. Went through all this effort getting up just to see it's already over."
These, the first words that night not shouted in alarm or whispered in prayer, shake the motley band of former slaves and thugs. In this home turned ruin turned fortress, tension snaps and silence ends. "You come all this way just to watch your bro take up gardening? That's great. Me? I need a better view."
Flesh and cloth and anger rush forward, kicking off the stunned soldier as a man whips around the top of a window onto the roof. He waits a moment on his perch for the breeze to catch just right, then stands. "Hey, quick loving around!"
His hands dart behind his back. When they return, something spins with blinding speed. "If you're not gonna keep it down out here," The steel pole slams to a halt at his feet, the wind howls, and a banner of gold on white unfurls behind him. "at least share a piece of the action!"
Meet Sab, White Lion Standard Bearer and Self-Appointed Little Brother of the Final Hand.
He taunt elf.
Najid Weiss
He fades back from the Cataphract. His subtle weaving movements drawing the vines into serpentine coils. His luring palm, sliding feet, the writhing tail of his staff - each pulse of motion traps more of the sudden wilderness in tangled snarls. In its struggle to grasp Sol's chosen, it snares only itself.
Between heartbeats, the moment arrives. His allies arrayed, His enemy in sight. Eyes still, hands ready, mind pure. A time with many names, which knows no words.
Place water in a cup, it becomes the cup.
Place water in a bottle, in becomes the bottle.
Place a snake in the grass?
You get bit.
This ability to chew scenery, allowing this punk-rear end smugelf and his catbro to keep on giving us lip? I'm positive - This guy has a dire requirement of a good thrashing - from the Light of INVICTUS!
A pounding drumbeat splits the night air. From five points the searing light of heaven heralds the wrath of the king of gods. A fist erupts from the fighter's chest, burning brighter as it scrapes the essence fangs of Najid's hands. As it peaks in radiance it strikes out, the Serpent Staff wraps around its fingers, and all that stands before it burns away as it dives for the arrogant Fairy.
The woman finally comes to a stop, shifting from blur of swirling essence too disorientating to properly focus on to utter, perfect stillness in the blink of an eye, upset, confused and angry, shadows coiling around her reflexively as she surveys the scene, Yells, screams, dramatic gestures, probably equally dramatic speeches will be made and some sort of drunken party later, but that's a problem for then and she can always hide in the bushes, assuming they stop trying to...what are they doing, anyway?
Swatting away an errant vine as it reaches blindly in her direction the woman reasons that since she's never seen one of the green and brown things that seem to be everywhere actualy growing they must just save all the energy up and get it over with all at once. It makes sense, and it does explain how some of the ... whatever they are's.... got so tall. The woman nods to herself, pleased with her deduction and absently sends a hatchet scything through the arm of a hobgoblin on the other side of the fight, smirking to herself as the things limb sails off and it goes spinning to the ground as the loss of the limb unbalances it, bringing two of its companions down along with it in a struggling, cursing heap.
She looks around for another choice target and barely manages to keep from spitting a curse as something coils around her ankle. A quick swing of her hatchet and with a crackle of thunder and a blast of ozone the vine is no longer an issue, but there are more and more moving towards her, even if they can't see her they seem to know her location. There's a rustle and a soft whistling and the woman is gone, behind the trunk of a nearby tree with seconds to spare as a thorn coated bush nearby releases a blast of razor sharp thorns at the spot she was stood, and the woman grins, a grin of the sort normally only seen on the face of a Siaka right before something digestive happens to an unfortunate fisherman.
Go time!
The swarming mass of hobgoblins looses all co-ordination as something darts between them, a swirling cloud of something, a mass of shadows that never seems to be where they aim, blows going wide or even worse, slamming into the luckier hobgoblins armor and sinking into the flesh of the less fortunate ones, and Hatchets seem to fly from everywhere, crackling through the air with a roar of lightning, spinning past the wyld creatures, only to come spinning back into the fight as they return to the hand of their owner, or the backs of any hobgoblins she has darted towards, and always the twisting, groping, blindly seeking vines follow, lashing back and forth like dozens of whips, clouds of thorns pinging off the gossamer armor of the fey that always seem to be between the animated plants and their target, vines entangling limbs and sending the fair folk crashing down as a womans laugh rings out, a sinister sound of joy in slaughter and derision for the entire seething mass of not people as once again those hatchets fly like their namesake, directly at the back of the laughing fey warlord.
Attempting a stunt here (It's 2:05am and if none of this makes sense my apologies) - athletics/dex for 9 dice plus 1 willpower to channel valor for 13 dice, plus the bonus dice for the stunt to try and dash between the assorted mooks, hopefully tangling a few of them up or if the dice gods smile, actually getting the vines to attack them for being in the way as She moves behind Carwo where she'll flurry, three attacks with joint wounding attack on each for six motes of essence total.
Heavenly Glass Ally feels the Raksha blade burn his flesh, and, while he is in pain, at the same time, he admires the solidity of the sword. The Raksha deal in glamourcraft, not the more crude forging of steel and wood, but the spinning out of dreams. It is a talent he does not have; indeed, it is a talent few, either mortal or Exalted, have, but he admires it when he sees it.
These weapons make them deadly foes. That he knows, and the injury serves to remind him of it. The wound is a distraction, nothing more, his enhanced constitution letting him tolerate wounds that might cripple mortal men. He knows he is not such a deadly foe, yet his daiklaive also bites, and it can do its own sort of damage, especially to the Raksha, who, for their skills, are still weak creatures.
He sees the vines snake towards him, and he he seems to glow as he bats aside the grasping vines, slashing them to bits with his daiklaive, and then completing the swing into Carwo Argoelion/s neck.
Dipping Swallow Defense (if I can) to ignore/parry the vines, and attacking my good friend Carwo.
The power of the Dawn brings wakefulness to your minds, and you feel the din of battle begin to solidify into a rhythm. The vines whip at you, but the power of the Sun and Moon bound to your spirits will not allow mere plants to prevent you from smiting the enemies of Creation! The hobgoblins scatter; the greenery Argoelion has unleashed serve to hinder them more than you. In the fury of your attack, the glamoured foes fall, leaving six hobgoblins still standing. Grimalkin is nowhere to be seen, but you can still feel her gaze raising the hairs on the back of your necks.
There is a moment of silence; the world inhales as its champions converge, and suddenly there is sound and fury and light. Shattering the night air, letting the world know that there are Heroes again, the union of your attack rings discordant and deafening on the impossible arms and armour of your foe.
Silence of Stilled Breath erupts from the tangle, one foreleg biting deep into Carwo's left arm. Though the Raksha is slowed by this attack, he is able to parry the first swipe of Zelena Zheleza's onslaught. Her claws glance off the daiklave, but knock him off-balance, opening him up for two vicious attacks. The third bites deep, hooked into his torso and armour. Heavenly Glass Ally, though a peaceful man, nonetheless makes an effort to attack the Wyld-born fighter. Though the vines are not a match for his Solar might, they are sufficient to mar his footwork. His daiklave strikes glass plate, and rebounds off. However, the flows of Essence guiding his blade leave him poised and ready for any foe that would dare strike at Sol's Chosen.
As the Twilight regains his footing, Only She Stand There breaks cover, seeking to cripple the Fae warlord. Her first attack misses, the inhuman grace of the Stag of Omens sufficient to escape her hatchet even under the onslaught of all her allies. He is not quick enough to dodge the next two, and his right knee explodes with electrified bits of sinew and pale lilac blood. The Lunar Exalts, his left leg, and his daiklave are all that support his weight, now. His right leg remains attached only because of the craftsmanship of his armor; his left leg was unharmed because it as well. As Twice-Polished Jasper explodes through the wall, he and Towering Brier strike their foe simultaneously. The Dawn and the Eclipse act as mobile hammer and anvil, respectively, and the Wyld material of Carwo Argoelion's flesh and armor cannot withstand their might.
King Doom: Attack 1: 4 sux, miss! Attack 2: 7 sux, hit! 1L! Attack 3: 7 sux, hit! No damage!
Ironslave: 7L!
Mile’ionaha: 6 sux, hit! 2L to armor!
His companions having left his foe stunned, crippled, and immobile, Najid Weiss, the Fifth and Final Hand, gathers his Essence. Swirling and flowing, it concentrates in his fingertips, the grim finality of judgement on his face. The Hand pulls back, then surges forward, flashing past vines, in a golden blur. One moment, there is a strategos, defiant and dangerous, even restrained. Then next, there is a dying Raksha, Najid's hand protruding from his back, clutching Carwo’s green-purple heart. The formerly immaculate armor falls silent, first cracked by Jasper, then shattered by his ally.
A_Raving_Loon: 16 sux, hit! 14 Agg! Smugelf goes SPLAT!
"Hah... hahaha. So.” Carwo coughs blood, which spatters over Najid’s face and shoulder. “You truly are... Chosen." The Fae’s hair forms a silver, bloodied waterfall as his head slumps forward, grin still fixed in place.
His remaining allies stand silently, stunned by the loss of their war leader. The hobgoblins appear nervous, shifting between aggression and moving to flee. The Twice-Burned and the White Lions break cover from their fortifications, a roar of battle-eagerness spilling forth, exuberant and exultant. Before they can strike, however, scintillating violet/blue fog begins to rise up from the ground, wreathing the whole of the newborn forest, producing dizzying reflected light from your animas. Grimalkin’s voice rings out, incorporeal and apparently from all directions. “You! My Lady will hear of this! You have made the Duchy of Mirrors your enemies, and we will not shield you from the Baloran Crusade! Your followers and your allies shall be fair game for any of the Raksha who hunger! Know this, and know that you have brought your fate on yourselves!” There is a sudden wind, and as the fog clears, you stand in a clearing. The body of a single hobgoblin lays on the ground, its head crushed. The corpse of Carwo Argoelion, strategos of the Lady of Amythest Desire, remains impaled on Najid’s arm, one leg and one arm barely attached to his body, and most of the bones in his body shattered.
The sounds of battle vanish instantly, and silence reigns for several blessed seconds before both the Twice-Burned and the White Lions burst into cheers and roars of approval and victory, leaving the albino woman glancing between the White Lion Standard Bearer, Sab and Najid as she realises that apparently she had the pair totally confused and leaving her trying surreptitiously to memorise the faces of her new circlemates now their animas are flaring and making it much, much easier to identify them, the bland, unmarked faces around her far, far too similar for the womans liking.
After a few moments the considerably more ruined than previously village is suddenly filled with the sight of a massive avian shape formed from shadow and starlight screeching into being above the small crowd. Trying not to look smug as her anima hovers over her the woman announces "She speaks aloud, not to any of the meat people in particular, only to announce that the one who spoke and fled the battle will die by this ones hand and no other. The grinning one has commited a terrible crime and the punishment for innapropriately touching one of The People is Incredible Death."
A tiny part of Silence's human consciousness lingers within the ravening beast, telling him that the enemy is dead and that it is now time for the fighting to end - a very tiny part that is quickly drowned out by the primal rage boiling in his hemolymph. A blood haze has fallen over his vision, and as he turns wildly about, his gaze settles on the spectral image of the great bird surmounting Only She Stands There. A low, chittering hisss escapes his mandibles, and in a blur of movement almost too fast to follow, he lunges, swiping at her with a razor-sharp forelimb, missing by the merest fraction of a millimeter.
He lays a broken body to the earth, a valiant heart in its rightful place. A sweep of his hand wreaths the fallen elf in light. Here at his feet, one man knew peace.
Without flinching or hesitation, Zheleza pivots through her attack on the fae thing spinning on her heel. She moves back out of the way of the oncoming tide of violence, taking deep satisfaction in the dismemberment of the raksha lord, then continues her rotation.
The Lunar steps in behind her counterpart and puts her expertise to work. Finishing her whirling step, she turns the lazy spin into a sudden burst speed - silver claws wrap around Stilled Breath's neck and draw him in to the other Full Moon's orbit. Zheleza twists at the hips and shoulders, pitching the other Lunar to the ground before dropping the full weight of her war form onto his sternum.
She waits for the thrashing to stop, enduring the clawing and biting of the mantis-man with uncharacteristic calm.
Twice-Polished Jasper
The deed was scarcely done before there was trouble in their midst.
"Calm yourself! You are among friends now!" he said, waiting for Silence's fury to end. He hoped that they could end this without anyone else getting hurt.
-----------
After the inevitable calming...
Jasper looked to where the Fae lord has been. Now there was nothing left but his blade and pieces of his shattered armor, coated with a fine white ash. He picked up the shattered pieces of armor, considering it. He'd carefully restitched the torn break-away straps of his pack and re-hidden his sledge. He flipped it open and stored away the pieces of glamour.
So perhaps it was the case that Glamour did not have the imperishability of the Five Magical Materials, or perhaps the armor had been constructed to break upon the death of its wearer, but it was still an interesting material. One never knew when such a thing could come in handy.
Then there was the matter of the sword. His sledge was a weapon that could take down buildings, but was surprisingly mediocre at the ending of human lives, compared to mortal blades. He looked at the Fae-borne weapon, its graceful curves and glass-like material. This was a fencer's weapon, a duelist's blade. It did not suit Jasper, though he was now more than familiar with a duelist's art.
It did give him an idea for what he didwant from a blade. He picked up the glass weapon.
"Who will carry this, as a warning to our enemies and a reminder to the Fae?"
The albino woman doesn't know what makes her react, a flicker of movement in the corner of her eye sending her spinning away before her consciousness can catch up to events the briefest fraction of a second ahead of the razor sharp claws of the insect totem lunar! He's frenzying, that much is obvious, the woman has done it herself after too long without food ends with a successful raid. He attacked her though, meaning he considers her the biggest threat, the woman trying to ignore the odd fluttery feeling in her stomach as she considers this.
The reactions of most of the group surprise her as well, several of them moving between her and the rampaging chitinous killing machine. Admittedly they are just meat and they are supposed to throw themselves into harms way to keep her alive, but the fact they did without her having to carefully explain that in their direction is... oddly comforting.
Stepping back from the scuffle the woman catches sight of Jasper as he loots the fallen fair folk noble. Reasonably confident the mantis is no longer a threat the woman takes a moment to announce "If this one cared for the welfare of the others, she would suggest that perhaps the glass weapon should be given to someone expendable for a few nights, just in case it held some form of surprise for any who took it from its master."
"Send in Boxbot!"
Silence of Stilled Breath
Silence hisses again in frustration as his quarry leaps leaps? Since when do birds leap? away from him. His legs tense in preparation for another flying leap when a second figure and don't we know him? Isn't this a friend? places itself between him and his prey. Distracted for a split second, he is caught off guard when another assailant wraps their hands around his neck and pitches him to the ground, but still manages to twist his forelegs free and begins savaging his attacker No! No no no no nonono... It isn't until Jasper's voice cuts through the din that the light of madness slowly vanishes from the Lunar's eyes, revealing the furry bulk of Zelena Zheleza pinning him to the ground, her indifferent expression a stark contrast to the bloody gashes and grisly lacerations covering her upper body.
Regaining his feet, Silence casts an apologetic look toward the Solar circle and Only She Stands There in particular before turning to face Zelena. Wordlessly, he touches his left talon to the moonsilver tattoos on his right bicep; the metal glows faintly for a moment before softening and rippling like hot wax. He then traces a single circle of silver with the tip of his claw; the tattoos shine brighter, then dim and solidify once more.
Then, in a flash of silver light, Silence is human once more, the spectral countenance of his totem wreathing his body like a retinal afterimage of his war form. He turns back to the Solars. "That, umm...that was...sorry," he finishes.
The pawsting business is tough work.
Zelena Zheleza
Zheleza gets up and hauls Silence to his feet. She seems unimpressed by her lacerations and newly external blood.
"Learn," she says to her Lunar counterpart. "Prove you are more terrifying than the fury of Luna."
The Full Moon releases her war form. In its place still stands a monster, but a more human one. She nods appreciatively to Weiss, then goes to scatter the dust that was the Raksha lord.
I have utterly no interest in the sword.
Corpse runner
Towering Brier
Wanelight spins as it hits the ground, stopping when Brier sticks out his foot to catch its blood-splattered back end. "Hey!" he shouts to the open air, jabbing his finger pointedly at nothing. "If you don't have the courage to come and say it to our faces, you don't have any business threatening us!"
Brier takes a seat on his bike, and begins to clean away the blood with his cloak. "Now that all that's out of the way," he says, addressing the party, "good job, everyone! Najid, next time let me finish talking. I might've been able to get his boss out here if I'd had the time. If anyone wants the sword, take it. If not, let's leave it as a marker of where we're going to come back and burn this place to the ground.
"But we need to decide what we're doing now. I've my own goals, and I've got a good idea of yours." Brier pauses, his eyes darting briefly to She. "Some of yours," he amends. "So how are we going to meet them? I have a few ideas, but let's open the floor for discussion."
Twice-Polished Jasper
Jasper, too pragmatic by far, whipped up a little leather strap and lashed the weapon to his back. It was heavy, without being lightened by essence attunement, but Jasper was strong and his pack was light.
"There are ten thousand places we could go and create something good." Jasper said, making a sweeping gesture with one arm. "But no where is there the potential to create a mightier nation than in the hundred kingdoms. Each tiny fiefdom is like an ingot of nearly-molten metal, just waiting for the push, the touch of heat that could unite them all. No great power holds sway, but there will still be a hundred petty forces that would array themselves against ones such as us. After what I have seen tonight, I think we are more than ready for the challenge."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the little medallions he had made earlier. "I would like to commemorate this moment. Not so much the defeat of the Fae, but an acknowledgement of what we are and what we represent." He passed them out, one by one. "Each one of us is a power in our own right, but together, there is nothing we cannot defeat."
He sat down cross-legged on the ground, moving awkwardly with the weight of the blade. He put it in his lap and began to meditate on its shape, its creation, its materials. Even as he did so, even as the fury of his anima began to diminish, he could feel the weight of essence on his eyes, on his hands. Details seemed to leap out of the blade at him, and he strived to explore this feeling, and make it second nature.
As an aside, he looked over to Heavenly Glass Ally.
"By the way, I'm interested in crafting a blade for myself. Something... a little larger. I've seen you work, would you help me work on a design?"
As per my motivation, I vote Hundred Kingdoms. Find a city-state in trouble, help it out, establish rulership, purge corruption, then expand.
I'll be attuning to the daiklave myself, overnight. It's still a better weapon than my sledge. Not spending XP on it, though, I'll probably use it to smelt a better weapon.
I'll also spend 8 XP learning the 1st Investigation Excellency, and 3 XP opening dodge. I'm sure one of my fellows can train me in the latter, but will RP actually asking around once this current line of questioning is over.
Re: Glass Ally, my Int+Craft is a little weak. If you can help me design a Grand Daiklave, I'll do the actual smithing once I encounter some Orichalcum I can smelt. I'll assist you with the design, you assist with the Craftsman Needs No Tools-assisted smithing?
The albino woman for once chooses to remain out in the open, though perhaps chooses is the wrong word, her blazing anima making it a waste of time and effort for her to try and conceal herself anytime soon. Scowling she leans moves to lean against a... what was it? The woman curses to herself under her breath as she tries to remember the word. Irritated yet further her scowl deepens and she stalks away, pausing to strip away a chunk of bark and a few leaves to try later she moves past her circle towards the nearest building. She pauses as Jasper hands her a small golden disc. Commemorating the moment he says. Why bother with that she thinks? she was here, she knows what happened. Absently the albino woman reaches up to rub her cheek and her scowl deepens further still, gritting her teeth in anger when she realises that.
"Acknowledge what She is now? An outcast, cursed and driven from the only home she's ever known by the monstrous god this motley collection of people and walking food follows? Oh, yes, do rub that in, wont you? She might have forgotten about that for a few blessed seconds. Don't forget to mention how the Destroyer stripped away all she was as well, stole away everything she's done, everything she's ever achieved when he cursed her. She might have forgotten about that too. Remind her she's been exiled to this alien nightmare where everything is wrong and nothing makes sense and... and..."
And she realises she's said most of that out loud. Shouted, in fact. Right at Jasper. Spinning on her heel the woman barely keeps from breaking into a run as she moves with what little dignity she has left into the nearest structure, the same forge the dawn caste had been working in before the group came under attack. The forge still burns, spilling what would be an almost overwhelming heat to most people into the small room, the snow white huntress finding it pleasantly warm as to her delight she notices several large, open sacks filled with sand! With a heart felt 'thank you!' to no one in particular the woman slips out of her gear and grabs a double handful, looking forward to finally feeling clean again after Luna alone knows how long, hoping against hope everyone outside will have the decency to pretend none of her little speech happened.
