A USS Enterprise appears.
USS Enterprise uses 'Phaser Barrage'.
Its super effective.
After reading the thread I went and got it, figured I'd throw it on for 5 mins and see how the alpha goes next moment its three quarters of a hour later and I'm 40 odd turns in.

It has some great ideas such as being able to search the research trees and queue up subjects to research. I like that I can colonise the other planets in a system with out building new colony ships as that streamlines that whole process.

All the races I have encountered seem to hate me on the spot so I started on three destroyers to have one for each outpost system and my home world system.

To a while to work out how to move my ships around as that wasn't explained well but I like the hero system as you an mould them into what you need them to be by spending your level up points in certain ways.

So far I'm enjoying it and wanting to get my game going instead of sitting in work.

I get the transition, but even without multiplayer it's really polished for an alpha.

It looks like this is the developer's first project too, so kudos to them. A lot of games are using the update, evolve, and develop method via strong community input it seems. It can be really good, or really bad. :shobon:

I finally got a chance to tuck into this game, I thought Outposts couldn't build anything until they were colonies :( so much wasted production.

So far my only complaints are: I haven't found keyboard shortcuts to get to screens but I also haven't actually looked to see if there's a control list, can't un-queue research, I tried clicking on other research as some have suggested and that didn't do anything.

I also seem to be stuck, I've apparently explored half the galaxy but I can't explore anymore. There's one star link I haven't traveled down, but it's because I can't. What tech do I need to open that up? It's kind of a red squiggely line.

Just nthing the praise, I hadn't even heard of this until I saw this thread but I bought it on a whim and a hope and it's scratching the itch left relatively unscratched since MoO2 all those years ago. Even the combat is exactly what I want out of a game like this, though it would be nice to have some more tactical options to choose from when just starting out. Combat in most 4X games has left me flustered and frustrated as real-time combat in turn-based games is a huge turn-off to me. But this is a nice departure from that and fits in nicely with the rest of the game.

And the UI. By God, the UI.

edit: ^^^^^^ apparently the research queue bug is related to Caps Lock. Trying hitting Caps Lock once or twice and trying again. Or I've heard restarting the game works too.

You can terraform colonized enemy planets. :allears:

I just glassed Horatio's entire home system, by putting a terraformer into my main fleet, and escorting it there, then letting it do it's thing while I held off his forces from getting back in to stop it.

This game seems pretty awesome so far.

Only a few things I can think to change:

1) Science/gold per turn counters should be visible on the main screen, much like in the Civ games. Its somewhat annoying to have to check if my treasury is growing or not by going into the economy panel.

2) Is there an encylopedia/help system anywhere? I can't seem to find it, but maybe I'm just an idiot.

3) End of turn reminders when a production spot is open, or nothing is being researched, or a ship needs orders. It's way too easy to forget some of these things as your empire grows.

4) Longer names for ships! I want to name some of my ship classes things like Assault Boat, Torpedo Boat, etc, but the character limit is too short.

I haven't checked yet, but can you name individual ships?

What's the benefit of having a larger "influence area" in your systems?

I'm trying to work out if it's worth building "camouflage radiators" to give me "+3 influence area on system".

By the description of the tech it sounds like a stealth field generator - is that effectively what it is?

2)What do you think this thread and the official forums are for? :D

3) THIS! THIS SO VERY HARD! I have wasted to many turns because I forgot to set a planet to build or forgot to set a research project!

4) Longer everything, the UI is just a bit too tiny/unobtrusive honestly. But yea, the ship design name is rather restrictive.

I'm not sure yet. I'm trying to work it out. I'm searching the forums but its a bit of a mess and other then a FAQ thread, I can't find any solid help. But I think you are on the right path with what you suggested. I was hoping it would be related to population happiness, and growth. I also wish you could share population with planets inside of the area of influence.

One of the notifications in the bottom right corner at the beginning of a turn gives a report of all finished productions for your systems. If you look at that you'll see all the systems that are finished have an empty slot for the next project, so you can easily tell at a glance which systems are finished.

You can even click on the particular system, assign new production, and when you go back it'll take you to the report, but it'll be updated with the new production. This way you have an easy way to tell what's left.

I totally agree about the ship orders. I hope they add an idle unit button or something, that other games have.

What's the planet type? There are a variety that need some really advanced techs that look like they're just arid/tundra. Or, if it's saying "requirements not met", you might only have 1 population per planet. You need to have the extra people to move over.

And no random events level changer, alas. Hopefully they add one, I love cranking that up and having a crazyass game.

You need to have more than one population in that system, otherwise you won't have the people necessary to colonize the planet. For some reason it tells you don't have the tech, so I'm guessing it's a fluke.

Free to roam the heavens in man's noble quest to investigate the weirdness of the universe!

So something I learned while playing is that when you already have a system colonized, you can click on another planet in the system, then click "Colonize system" to make a base on it. Apparently I did NOT need to spam the poo poo out of colony ships, although it is still probably more effective. The more you know!

Speaking of colonies, when I first make one, there's this indicator in the upper left corner of the system screen that says that the system is an outpost, and will take X turns to become a colony. What is the functional difference between the two?

Here are some impressions I got from a very swift multi hour session of divnig into this game.

Does anyone feel that research happens a bit too quickly? Maybe it's just because I'm playing the Sophons, but I scoop up research really quickly once I establish a dedicated research system, which leads to the "This ship is obsolete the second I make a fleet of them" syndrome. I also learned that if you queue up multiple techs, you can actually research multiple techs in one round, which is a great touch.

What mechanic does the game have for preventing you from taking the panspermia approach and colonizing everything you can? Is there supposed to be a system to deter this aside from slowing growth?

I also can't help but feel some of the system improvements need to be more percentile based, rather than population based. Without that percentile bonus, there's very little incentive for me to pick anything but the most optimal exploitation, like +Production for Lava or +Food for Terran, etc, unless I'm in desperate need of them (ie, a planet that has nothing but Lava and Arid planets should probably get some +Food at some point).

I seriously can't wait to see what they do with this game, though. It's hitting that same itch MoO2 used to hit and it's such a nostalgic feeling.

Edit: If nobody does a Legend of Galactic Heroes mod at some point I would be pretty sad.

I'm pretty sure it says "requirement missing" and that requirement is that you don't have a spare population to send, not that you're missing tech.

From what I've seen - friendly races get scared and less friendly if you expand too quickly. Then of course, holding a large front against pirates / unfriendly aliens is a larger issue.

2) It's still an Alpha, let alone a Beta.

3) You have to actually do an action (click the dismiss button) to get rid of the produciton and research notices, why is that not enough? Also ship needs orders would be incredibly stupid because you're going to have idle fleets fairly often to deal with pirates and border garrison duty. Maybe a warning when a fleet reaches it destination, like the other windows, would work but not an every turn reminder.

The issue is that those also go away when you click "end turn", and when there's nothing going on it's too easy to just end up hitting "end turn" as you see the popups appear, and then that info is gone forever. I like how Civ did it, where it won't let you go to the next turn without setting research and all that so you don't end up wasting five or six turns.
