Regardless, this is nice. Slightly above expecations.

No apparent trouble with 4k too despite the memory bus figures, I'll delve into it more tomorrow though. Hopefully my hunch was right about all that even though I have no idea why it is that way

Wow my HD 6970 is looking really weak right about now and the GTX 970 is starting to look really tempting. I have a 1080p monitor but love to crank the quality settings up or install graphic enhancement mods. The 6970 has been good to me but yikes.

So what are the odds AMD's announcement tomorrow will be a card or cards that at least match the GTX 9X0 series? I like to support the underdogs and AMD needs all the help it can get.

I have installed my MSI 970 and it is working great but my hard drive seems to be a lot more active than is used to be with my old card. For the first 90 minutes after I installed my card my HDD was making such a racket that I could feel the vibrations through my desk but then it settled down. It is the same activity/noise you would hear when defragging (thrashing the common term?). I checked out the system information on the nVidia control panel and it says that I have 7.9GB of available graphics memory and 3.8GB of shared system memory. Since my system only has 8GB of memory is there an issue where it is trying to to use the HDD for memory? My previous 2GB did not have this issue.

Great card otherwise, I can't hear the cards fans over my case fans and has been running my games much faster than my dear old 6970.

For the next 12 hours, and EVGA 1070ti is $380 after rebate. That's pretty good for a new card.

Edit: it's the version with the giant 3 slot cooler, so it should keep overclocked thermals in check. There is an MSI 1070ti "Duke" that is $350 after rebate, though I would prefer the EVGA.

Haha drat, I just bought that last night when it was ten bucks more ($409 before MIR). Does Newegg have some sort of "Went on sale the day after I bought it" policy?

That CP2077 is buggy surprises no one, I think, at least in this thread.

I also think the wailing and gnashing of teeth that happened the last time they delayed it probably pushed them to release it even earlier than the usual "let beta testers pre-order at a premium price" dynamic that seems to have become normalized in the industry.

That latter dynamic is something I'm not sure we'll see change since it is apparently still working, and the number of us who always wait for a game to be out for a while and go on sale before purchasing is probably a minority. Hell, now that I think of it, I guess letting people pay top dollar to be beta testers indirectly benefits me, since I get more polished games at a lower price that way.

I have a feeling the CP2077 getting pushed out the door could also be due to investors demanding the game be out for the holiday shopping season and/or the execs at CDR made a lot of promises to the investors about the launch date that could get them in hot water if they failed to meet said promises.

As a general rule I always wait a month or two before buying any game. Especially open world games. Hopefully by March 3080s will actually be available and I can get one for CP2077.

"We built it off the back of the Nvidia chip because it's highly energy efficient," says Mr Thompson. Just like a tiny but powerful Raspberry Pi device used to teach schoolchildren basic programming tasks this approach takes up very little power. And keeping power consumption to the bare minimum is critical to making the submarine's battery last.

On a related note, I'll probably be seeing my notify for a 3080 Ti come up with EVGA in another few days based on current queue progress. Could obviously be next week still, but I'm about 30 seconds away now. Originally I was going to use my 40% discount code on it... but that expired, so now it'd be for full MSRP minus the associate's code.

I had gotten 3090 FTW3 via step-up, but it's still new in the box because I've been busy with life stuff and haven't even played games recently and thus haven't wanted to swap it in. So I've been tempted to either use the notify for a 3080 Ti and sell the 3090, or keep the 3090 and offer someone the 3080 Ti.

Unlike He Who Does Not Remain, either card would be for cost + shipping if anyone is interested, because I'm a dirty leftist who doesn't care about adding a scalping finders fee. I figured I'd mention it here so if someone is interested and wants to PM me, we can plan for when the notify comes up. Otherwise I'll just let it expire and probably keep the 3090. I'd have made a thread in SA Mart, but since it's a pending notify, that seemed odd?

Ubisoft posted an Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora PC feature deep dive: https://www.ubisoft.com/en-us/game/...tures-deep-dive

I subbed to Ubi+ for a month to try the game. My eyes glaze over during the story cutscenes, and the gameplay is very far-cry-esque, but it is a very pretty game. There's a lot of vegetation detail, with good microdetail down to the ground level. Geometric and texture detail on larger objects are pretty good up close, though there's obvious visual detail pop-in when moving around. The lighting is pretty good. It uses RTGI and RT reflections combined with shadow maps, I believe. There's no basic RT on/off toggle--if you can turn it off, it must be by turning some of the settings to low or something. Anyway, it's not path-tracing level of detail, but you get some fairly natural-looking shading and bounce lighting. The reflections are ho-hum, though. Even with the BVH detail setting maxed, off-screen objects are visibly less detailed in the ray-traced reflections. Even the primary SSR reflections are mediocre. And they still use cube-maps for certain things like transparent windows (with obvious perspective errors).

But I think these are compromises made to let it actually run pretty well on current hardware. I can't speak for midrange or low-end hardware, but I can run the game at 4K ultra settings and "ultra quality" DLSS (which is apparently higher than the normal 75% scale and is more like 2000p at 4K) at around 80 FPS with my 4090 rig. For a game that's as richly detailed as this, I'd say that's pretty good. It at least runs better than the recent UE5 games, and it looks better by certain standards too. The lighting isn't as good as Lumen, but it's significantly more stable looking. I did wish they had something like Nanite though, that pop-in sucks.

Also, from the article above, apparently there's a fun bonus mode:

Haven't tried it yet, so I'm not sure if it actually offers any interesting visual upgrades or if it just increases detail in places you won't notice. I'm guessing the latter.

edit: it just increases reflection, shadowmap, and volumetric resolutions to unreasonably high levels without fixing the issues i did have with the graphical presentation like the low bvh detail or pop-in.

I got this game for free with my 7800X3D and have been debating whether i should even bother redeeming the code. Maybe I will try it just for the benchmark.

As for Sony and Microsoft, I can't see a really compelling reason why they'd switch off what's proven to be a pretty safe bet so far, at least not in the next generation or two. AMD is the devil they know and have shown that they can make an APU which performs well enough and is cheap enough that it can be put it in a $500 box without losing too much money. They also aren't worth 2 trillion dollars and are probably a lot more willing to negotiate and get along than NVidia is.

Isn't MS still unhappy with Nvidia over the original XBox? Nvidia is also an AI company now and feels gaming is beneath it.
