Have you ever seen a publisher treat a developer like this though? I'm not sure how close you are following it, but they are literally erasing Kojima's name from promotional material and game logos and stuff... it seems like a wild overreaction, like they are trying to delete his existence.

It's hard to imagine them releasing another Theatrhythm because it'd need to have like 400 songs from the beginning just to top Curtain Call but I don't see why they can't just release DLC forever (let me play XV music Square)

This is actually how most videogames were made before the crash, the idea of games having credits (that people care about, for a long time a lot of JP devs used to work under pseudonyms, Masayashi Sokken didn't actually put his name on a game he composed until FFXIV for instance), and auteur designers are fairly recent ideas in the broader scheme of things.

The first easter egg in a videogame was a developer hiding his name in Adventure so someone would know he made it, never assume that a lot of companies would very much prefer if that was a norm. Big name designers who are more famous that the companies they work for are more trouble than they're worth, because of how hard it is to tie down IP laws and a devs name is often all you need to attach to something to let people know what other products it evokes. An Inafune or Kojima can go anywhere and make whatever they want, and people will buy that, and people will shy away from products like Metal Gear if they know the original creative team isn't tied to it.

This is the first I've heard about it, though I don't keep up with gaming news whatsoever. So is it pretty likely that Kojima is done after MGSV? If so, that really blows. Hopefully they don't decide to kill Silent Hills or something.

Let's be real here, it has nothing to do with "increasing development costs and risk" and more that pachinko/gambling is a reliable cash cow and mobile gaming is a far more lucrative option than console gaming. Even if the cost to make a AAA console game stayed the same you'd still see big companies like Konami ditch console gaming because easier money is better for their bottom line.

Type 0 plays really drat well on Vita remote play, at least. On one hand, you would expect it to given the PSP roots, but it's good to know that they didn't screw up the controls to the point where it wouldn't work anymore.

Also the motion blur is way less disorienting on the smaller screen.

I unlocked a shock mace for Cinque for using her in the first liberation mission. Should I mix up my leads or redo missions for unlocks or just keep flailing around with Cinque?

Eddain
May 6, 2007
The janky camera and motion blur don't really bother me, it's just the lovely lock-on system and Phantoma gathering that pisses me off. Phantoma should just automatically fly to you instead of having you lock onto dead bodies to grab them. When I kill an enemy my lock-on stays on the dead body instead of switching to the next enemy and that really throws me off. Or sometimes I grab Phantoma and the lock-on stays over a blank area for a period of time before latching onto another enemy.

I also wish Magic were a separate ability instead of being grouped with the physical ones. That way you'd always have at least one offensive Magic skill on your character in case they do some bullshit like putting enemies on high ground where your melee guys can't reach them. That whole Special Reinforcement thing sucks with this too. If my main character lacks a ranged attack and I have two Special Reinforcements replacing my actual party members I can't hit high ground/flying enemies at all. I can't even dismiss the helpers to bring in my original team. I've stopped enabling it when doing story mode missions and now just turn it on when I have to go grind SPP for tasks.

It really is sad. It is okay to love and want to make a lot of money, but if you want to go into the business of selling creative material then pick something that you enjoy. Not only does that usually lead to a lot more long term profits but in general the products turn out to be better. It is a win/win for everyone.

Sometimes I really think that some companies need to go from being public to private at least temporarily so that they freely recreate themselves and get back on track. I know that is a lot easier said than done, but hey! Dell is doing it.

It's not the first time and and it won't be the last. For example, Patrice Désilets, the director of another stealth action series, left Ubisoft to make his dream game, had his company purchased from THQ's fire sale, and was forced to leave his dream project. He said, "Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisoft. I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings. This was not my decision. Ubisoft's actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game."

Besides, you're in a Final Fantasy thread. The story of the Final Fantasy games is the story of how they built up and destroyed their talent. Successful games are typically the result of creative, management, and sales working together to make a quality product with a shared vision than a maverick genius savant pulling a miracle. However, companies like having forward facing individuals. Star developers are usually the result of a well-oiled marketing machine rather than a natural occurrence. A company can just as easily destroy its stars as it can build them.

Square poached Matsuno from Quest to make Final Fantasy Tactics. They bought out the entire Quest team for him. Matsuno was showing live demo builds of FFXII at e3 when he was still director. In spite of the years of work he put into the game, that didn't stop the company from just crediting him for Story & Concept in the final product.

Tetsuya Nomura has been a major brand for the company. They credit him for any screenshots or videos featuring his artwork. He's helped define the visual look of their games and headed the Kingdom Hearts games. This doesn't mean he can't be kicked off from his dream project that's over budget and behind schedule through a hastily written press release by the CEO.

Hiromichi Tanaka was the last remaining member of the original Final Fantasy development team. He worked as a designer for FF1/FF2/FF3. He directed and wrote for the Secret of Mana games. He produced and helped design Xenogears and Chrono Cross. He pioneered an online Final Fantasy with FFXI which was massively profitable. This didn't mean he and his team wouldn't have to fall on their swords and appease the shareholders after FFXIV 1.0.

Companies like to support their star talent and build living brands for their business. That doesn't mean they are immune from shipping on time or changes in the company's overall strategy. No one individual or team is going to be more important than the overall business. Life goes on after key members of a team depart, even on bad terms. Ubisoft still makes Assassin's Creed games after Patrice Désilets.

The business of Konami has changed so that console games are no longer a core pillar of their business. There was a time where having a AAA stealth action series with 3-4 years of development made sense. Now, Ubisoft can make 4-5 Assassin's Creed games that sell ten million a piece for the time it would take to make MGS5. Even Take2, which would give generous development time to its development teams, has begun to kill underperforming developers. We'll never know for sure but there were likely ultimatums from Konami's management over MGS5's deadline since it was an expensive project in a division that did not align with the rest of the company.

It's unfortunate the fallout between them had to be like this. Nevertheless, it's best for Kojima and his team to leave the company rather than end up marginalized like Igarashi was in last years at Konami. For that matter, Konami is already recruiting for a new Metal Gear game under a new team. Up for a Metal Gear reboot with yearly entries, anyone?

Assuming this whole thing is legit (and it probably is--sure, Kojima's departure is on April 1, but no company would pull poo poo like this for an April Fools joke), this is probably what it is. If I had to guess, Konami got fed up with Kojima's "this is my last Metal Gear, I swear" routine and made it clear they want Metal Gear to keep going indefinitely (and probably with more sequels, more quickly). If they have to get rid of Kojima to do it, so be it.

That said, I wonder what effect Kojima's departure will have on future Metal Gear games' sales. At least in the West, it seems like Kojima is, himself, a huge part of the series's appeal. He's much more of a "rock star" than Patrice Désilets, so I think people will be actively looking for the absence of his influence and it'll hurt impressions of future Metal Gear games, regardless of their quality. (See also: huge swathes of Community's audience writing off season 4 before it even aired. Maybe not a perfect comparison, but it comes to mind.) Then again, it's dangerous to assume that the vocal internet fans represent the majority of a game series's audience. Maybe yearly Metal Gear sequels will do for Konami what Assassin's Creed does for Ubisoft: make a whole shitload of money releasing the same game over and over.

Super curious as to what will happen with Silent Hills. My guess is Konami will keep Kojima on as a contractor for that one. Or maybe that's just my hope.

I'm trying to stay optimistic. People who want to make good games will keep making good games, just maybe with smaller budgets and less traditional publishing avenues. And let's not ignore that (relatively) niche games with high production values are still being made and heavily promoted. Bloodborne and The Witcher 3 come to mind.

The current generation of dedicated video hardware has created two really big problems: 1) Gamers have unrealistic expectations for quality/price and 2) it's really loving expensive to make a current-gen AAA game from scratch in a timely manner.

The easiest way to solve these problems came down to: 1) Microtransactions to decrease percieved cost/increase profit and 2) churn out yearly sequels for AAA and regular mobile releases to keep the money flowing in-between.

Yes, but this generation has created a tipping point that is forcing even the likes of Nintendo to start making lower budget titles for mobile. Until some major jumps in content creation technology can bring the production cost/time of AAA games down, developers need to monetize the mobile market to have the funding/time to stay competitive in the console market.
