This entire conversation is really dumb.

FFXIII has a big problem and that problem is that it is not fun. The combat doesn't require enough skill to engage you and there's nothing else really to do besides combat and watching the story, which is itself a pain in the rear end to follow and annoyingly stuffed with cliches and twists and melodrama. That's all there is to it, really, anything else is just debating on flavors of badness or disagreeing (for some reason) and saying that somehow the combat was not dull and poorly paced.

You know what a really fun Final Fantasy game was? Final Fantasy VIII. That game had crazy poo poo, you could fight T-rex monsters within the first five minutes, you got to storm a beach and run from giant robots, dismantle trains with button passcodes and sneak through security checkpoints, attempt an assassination and break the gently caress out of a prison that is also a drill. The whole time you can collect new super sweet summon monsters who you can then train like Pokemon to give you super sweet loving skills that can make you have 9999 HP or take next to no damage or absorb fire magic and hey, you know what, if you get bored of breaking apart every item into the game into magic spells to further augment your stats so you can kick massive rear end while going on yet another crazy mission in some far-off land then you know what you can loving do? That's right daddy-o, you can play motherfucking cards. That's right why don't you go right ahead and convert every monster into a playing card AND THEN PLAY THAT poo poo. Aw but you won't need to do that, you're better than that--you want the rare cards. Get them rare cards, all over the world, beat their owners and claim your prize and then at the end of the game you can turn those cards into NUCLEAR BOMBS why the gently caress aren't all of you playing Final Fantasy VIII right the gently caress now? What, the story's dumb? Who gives a gently caress you get to have a fistfight in freefall with a jetpack soldier and that's before you go to the invisible future city and summon the legions of Hell living on the god damned loving moon.

There's no context for all the stuff that happens in VIII, it's just like a kid making up a story as they go along, or someone describing a dream. There's no reason why there's a flying university, they just wanted to have an impressive FMV. At least when you go into space in FFVII, there's a reason for it.

To an extent, I don't see the problem with this. The thrust of what I was getting at was that in Final Fantasy VIII you *do* all of the things I described--you have an active role in almost all of them, and your involvement and skill matters in success. In FF13, every single important thing happens in a cutscene. Even the big boss fights with Barthandalus just sort of...end and then poo poo happens anyway. It's as if you weren't even there.

In FF8, when you are having a sweet flying university versus flying military academy fight, yeah, it was for the sake of having a cool movie, but then you get to play it.

Huh, I guess we've found someone willing to champion X as much as Azure defends XIII!

X always left a bad taste in my mouth because (ending spoilers) Tidus dying in the end completely invalidated one of the central themes of Yuna's journey, specifically that you shouldn't have to make a martyr of yourself. Though on the other hand, I can't give that development too much crap because it led to one of the best elements of X-2's story, which then also gets completely invalidated by the "best" ending, of course, but whatever. I'm one of those weirdos who likes GIRL POWER over X. Plus it also gave us this.

e: To Zanarkand is an extremely pretty song (with a hilarious Black Mages version), but the only other things I can remember from X's soundtrack are hordes of TZ remixes and that goofy buttmetal intro.

Ah, see, I'd argue that having Tidus die works for the plot, because he was the character most insistent upon not having sacrifice, not having people die--he's childish the whole story, and over the course of the pilgrimage he discards his childish aspects one by one. His ultimate acceptance of adulthood and responsibility lies in his silent, willing acceptance of his inevitable sacrifice. More importantly, it strikes a dramatic irony towards the theme of martyrdom, since the obvious martyr lives while the natural savior does not. That dramatic irony helps cement that the "cycle of death" still exists in Spira, even if Sin is gone, and there's a bunch of other kind of obvious bits of symbolism you could draw if you really wanted to.

I don't have a strong opinion about X-2 in any great way, but I found it generally annoying. Maybe if it had actual women writing it or something, I'd buy the "girl power" Final Fantasy, but as is it is kind of a cheap excuse to have a bunch of girls running around in fetish wear.

The battle system is a fine hot roaring engine of jungle love and I don't care what anybody says that kitten purrs. It's just surrounded by something truly outrageous. Truly truly truly outrageous.

I don't think people "growing out" of Final Fantasy is really the issue. The storylines in Final Fantasy VII, and VIII and IX all have silly issues with them that you can nitpick if you want, but the fact is is that they more or less sell you on it. In VII the characters have really snappy dialog and it feels grim and tense when it wants to be and campy and off-kilter at other times. The characters are varied, which keeps interactions fresh, and you have a lot of really neat character moments that coincide with your own progress in the game. But this is all a digression, because it isn't the plots of the series that are the problem, it's the gameplay.

I know everyone seems to be convinced that JRPGs just have shoddy gameplay, but it should be understood that this isn't really the case. JRPGs have PLENTY of gameplay, it's just all in mechanics and customization. Final Fantasy VII has simple turn-based battles with tough bosses and other obstacles--you overcome those obstacles by exploring and finding materia, which you can then equip to outfit people with abilities. YOu have limitations on how much materia you can use at once, so there's an element of picking your arsenal and trying to anticipate incoming threats. It really matters WHAT Materia you use and when--if you load up Cloud with every high-damage summon materia, he'll be stuck with 3000 HP when everyone else has 9999, and enemies are dealing 6k. Add in equipment customization and you have a very sturdy engine to run the game on. The plot is just excuses for you to go to places and fight guys, and it's a very entertaining excuse.

New Final Fantasy games just don't have that. 13 requires you to do absolutely nothing more than hold down a button to level up. There's weapon customization, but that doesn't even really become viable or fully usable until the very end point of the game, and even then it is so cumbersome and clumsy that you won't really know what the gently caress you are doing anyway. There is an element of timing required with the Paradigm shift system and, actually, this is kind of fun and almost engaging. It's a promising system, except that they never really do anything interesting with it. You just switch poo poo, and often you just find a combination that lets you take on most battles and just use that the whole game. 13-2 at the very least attempted to give you more variety, and even threw in a half-assed monster raising component to give you some semblance of actual gameplay, but let's be real. It's not much to look at, and 13-2 doesn't really have any memorable bosses (maybe a couple) and it has boring songs and there's only four areas in the whole game that they just reuse over and over again, it's clearly a cash-in recycled B-side.

The story matters, yeah, but I'd be fine with FF13-2's dumb loving time travel nonsense. Hell, I even kind of enjoyed FF13 for awhile--I liked the very focused emphasis on the character arcs. It was only when it dragged out every single one for twenty hours, resolved them all in one, then kicked you off a cliff into loving bonkersville that I lost interest. But I'd be fine with all of it if the game was just fun to play. But it isn't. You know it isn't. It's kind of neat for awhile--the battle system is always initially so interesting and fast and flashy...but battles never change, you really don't need more than three strategies and load-outs to deal with every challenge, and you can make the regular game a complete cakewalk halfway through, at which point you then have to grind for absolute ages to even attempt to challenge the DLC, which you bought because you're a nostalgic moron and you saw Ultros and it reminded you of a Final Fantasy game that was actually fun.

Who gives a poo poo if Zidane honking the princess's tush is an affront to women? Who cares if Edgar said something questionable to a weird magical girl in a weird magical cave full of loving monsters? Who cares about what is anime as what? It doesn't matter--you know it doesn't matter because you're playing the game and you're having a loving great time and you don't give a gently caress about any of that until years afterwards when you're bitching about it on the Internet because you've long forgotten that once upon a time Final Fantasy games were fun.

Play Final Fantasy XIII-2 because at the end of the day it's still a better alternative to Hyperdimension Neptunia.

Don't play it if you like to have fun though, it's not fun. Chronobind loses its luster after about ten minutes and you'll be doing it for HOURS to get the sweet poo poo at the casino. Everything else in the game is pretty much dreadful.

I gave up on Chocobo Hot and Cold after playing for like 3 hours and getting only 2 maps I could actually dig up. I also apparently missed out on some Mognet subplot because I probably missed some delivery somewhere. And I found out that I have a treasure rank of H. I am apparently not very good at this game.

Ever since I've had the option for the end bits I've used a party of Zidane, Vivi, Steiner and Dagger. Since the whole game is this big, polished love letter to FFI I decided to honor that and roll with the warrior, thief, black and white Mage.

I have really, really enjoyed FF9, and since I am not inclined be a completionist, I haven't minded the fact that there is a ton of random content I haven't seen hidden behind timesink activities, but for people who do want that, I can see why they would hate this game. So much of the end stuff is just not-so-cleverly hidden grinding which is stupid.

Although this might be the first final fantasy where I try to kill one the optional super bosses (if Hades counts as that. gently caress getting a gold chocobo to reach Ozma)

I think FFIX, thanks to its pre-rendered backgrounds, is still one of the best looking games of its era and the franchise in general. I love how many secrets were stashed away in the background, which encouraged you to explore and appreciate all of the fantastic art.

That was my very first end-game party too, and I also didn't do much Chocobo Hot and Cold my first time through. I'd reccomend trying it to completion next time you play through the game though, the rewards can be really nice and are better the earlier you start.

Hades doesn't really count compared to Ozma. ;)

It's worth mentioning that part of the reason we're probably getting Lightning Returns like it is is because there's a large gender gap when it comes to FFXIII. Polls have shown that while male and female (Japanese) respondents both like Lightning, female players are more likely to have enjoyed FFXIII while it ranks lowly with male players. So, being Japan, what we're looking at is "hey, take the popular character and give her bigger breasts and skimpier clothing so the guys come back."

(As a side note, the only FF game that male and female players seem to like equally is FFVII. I'm sure everyone is shocked by FFVII's continued popularity.)

The female characters in FFVII are written remarkably well. Both have well-defined personalities, wear reasonably modest clothing (compared to a lot of RPGs) and they have their own story arcs, sub plots and even inter-cast interactions with each other. Tifa and Aeris kind of become gal-pals for a chunk of the journey, and Aeris is arguably the most important character of the cast.

Plus there's Yuffie and Yuffie is kicking rad.

This, basically. It's the first Final Fantasy game since 12 that's felt like a Final Fantasy game. It's fun enough for what it is, and you can take or leave a lot of it. It's an MMO done in MMO fashion that trims almost all the fat--leveling takes time, yeah, but you don't have to invest eighty hours of your life into it to see results. It slows down as you get near the level cap, but then you get access to bigger and badder events and bosses.

The dungeons are really pretty too, and there's some clever boss fights. The gameplay that is there has been highly polished and does exactly what it needs to. It's probably the most user-friendly MMO I've played. I haven't renewed after my free trial ended, but I'll probably pick up a new subscription when they announce the first content patch and keep playing, and that's more than I can say for any other MMO I've played.

At least it's better than FF13. Plus the Titan boss battle music is the best boss fight music in the series.
