Or is it specifically require being married?

The forum used to have a name relating to the Dreamcast or something? But it looks like that thread inspired the rename.

I thought LPs had a blackout period until the game has been out for a few months. That game has only been out for just over a month, so is there even a LP? I figured it came out of the Undertale thread in Games, which posts a few hundred posts a day.

I'm pretty sure the smiles came from the Undertale thread, but if i remember correctly, the blackout period thing was lifted awhile back since people day-1 LPing stuff was more of an issue of quality then anything else, and that's something that sorta self moderates now I think.

Besides Gunnerkrigg Court and Undertale, I can't really think of anything that came out and got a lot of people to make avatars like this.

edit: I mean, I know Dangan Ronpa got people to buy accounts but I don't think people went as far as buying a ton of avatars too.

Homestuck got a decent chunk of avatars in its heyday. Amusingly many of those switched to Gunerkrigg and Undertale.

I know the source is the Final Fantasy XIV thread. There was some other avatar being bought "for" everyone in that thread, then I guess ImpAtom, whose avatar before all this was that Mercy on a more normal background, complained and the buyer made that the new one as retaliation. I don't know the details thought.

From what I remember someone went on an avatar buying spree for almost anyone posting in the tread at the time, giving them the "Riker with Fracture (an FFXIV ability icon) in his eyes" avatar - some people starting getting variants, facing the other way, with a beard, etc. I think ImpAtom's went through a few before it got to that point.

I don't think there was really much that prompted the avatar spree either. The Fracture ability has some history in the thread as far as I know, and it was being cut with the expansion that was about to drop when the spree happened.

yeah like anyone who actually gets IRL mad about any goon shenanigans in a game other than EVE is a complete dingus

and EVE is only an exception because people put non-trivial amounts of real-life money into the stuff that goons irrecoverably crap all over, like that's still hilarious but it gives the whole thing a twinge of sadness

Probably depends on what "goon shenanigans" translates to. I get the impression the goon-trolling of yesteryear wasn't probably always the most mature thing. IMO there's probably a fine line to walk between good trolling and more disruptive to outright harassy-trolls?

The EVE stories though are always a treat because it generally operates entirely within the designs & intentions of the game's systems. (or meta-systems in the case of factional espionage.)

lmao yeah, I was onboard for squawking in MWO. (Goons also managed to 'hijack' the subreddit moderation.)

I'm just thinking of stuff like the time goons raided an ingame funeral (for someone who died irl) in WoW that was taking place in a pvp zone. You can justify it with saying it's in bounds of the game and mechanics, but it does seem kinda uncool in retrospect. (Last it came up in the WoW thread it was a pretty divisive subject) Also, second life raids, which admittedly I don't know a ton about, but sounded like it was kinda more of a thing of loving with people who were just trying to do their own (however cringey) thing. That's sorta why the phrase 'taking the game too seriously" makes me a bit uncomfortable, it can be really dismissive of something that people might be getting some fun out of?

That said, yeah, making fun of battletech lore and annoying grogs with allchat in pvp games is kinda not crossing a line.

One of the WoW trolls that was a bit more benign I remember & took part in was "Icon Hell" which was an addon made by Lemon King which would place and cycle target markers (colourful shapes) above party member's heads. You could adjust how fast they'd change and some other behaviours. You would normally set them on enemies to designate kill order and the such, or some healers would like to mark the tank so they were easier to keep track of. At the time, anyone in the party had permission to place target markers, so if you had annoyed party members (you usually did) they'd end up in a witch hunt of the responsible party member. It helped that not a lot of people knew about the addon, so it was easy to be like "I dont know who's doing it, im too busy tanking to set them." I always thought it was easy to tune out (I think you had the option in the addon to exclude yourself from being market, but that tended to be a give-away) so I never got why people got so rattled by them.

Other more shenanigan-y type WoW goon trolls I remember were the chat related ones; one that'd automatically call people out for swearing in general chats, and another that was basically a chat bot that string along and mess with people who whisper you.
