I'm trying hard to see it like that but I can't. I think your brain has problems.

It's more like three-quarters view, the big suction-cup fish mouth pointing to the upper left. The smaller eye is behind it, looking kind of shell-shocked. (So I guess it works if you see it as a face or as a fish.) The mouth could be a neck-wrinkle or even some delineation of the tail.

You people are nuts. That does not look like a fish. If the big eye is the mouth, then the mouth is on his butt. This poo poo is hosed up.
I don't see any butt in this picture. If anything, the butt is behind everything. Maybe this fish is half squished and looking up at you like "Please don't step on me."

Hell, I only saw the fish when Groghammer mentioned the possibility, but I can see it, easy.

This is pretty much the first time I've seen a national attitude from a NZ native (apart from my husband; he's cool) that wasn't blatant and aggressive chauvinism. It's refreshing; thank you. My inlaws are batshit.

What "country" is :cheat: from, anyway?

That would be the guy posting about his classmate "Denko". A quick Google for "Denko" produces all the results you could ever want on the story.
:stare: Jesus Christ. That was hilarious and terrifying all rolled into one. Hilarifying.

FinalGamer has an avatar of some feline-race game character with a right eye that literally wanders like that. The avatar is of considerably higher quality.

Picture it as a refined graphical version of this horizontal smiley: O_o

(The "fish" misconception was covered here before in some detail.)

Yeah, "oni" is often translated as "ogre".

I'm always disappointed when I'm chatting with someone in another messaging app and I can't use the perfect SA smilie. This happens a lot.
I use them all the time in Pidgin Hangouts for PC (when the person I'm chatting with also has the smiley pack), but really miss them when I'm on my phone. I think there's an SA emoji keyboard for iPhone, but nothing for Android devices. :(

Ah, I think Cheetos ripped those off then. I've had something similar in America once when I was a kid.

Ah, they still exist, and they're loving expensive on Amazon:

I don't know that I've seen those Paws, but there a couple limited-edition flavors (White Cheddar, Cinnamon Sugar) that come out seasonally. The shape is a little reminiscent of Monster Munch, but not really.

We pick up Monster Munch from the British food store whenever we get the chance (it's a two-hour drive away in another country). Pickled Onion is the best; Flamin' Hot is Pickled Onion cranked up 1/16 of a notch.

So, yeah, it may be referring to that, probably parodying the "mexican stereotype".
I can picture non-Latino heavies saying "Whoa, calm down there, ese" to a combative Latino guy in movies or on TV. Picture Hank on Breaking Bad. Or this actual (sarcastic) quote from drug lord Tuco on BB: "That's a brilliant plan, ese. Brilliant."

Was it just a thing in people's avatars or does that exist and I'm just terrible at searching the smilies page?
I think it was only in avatars. A tiny little add-on slipped into avatars, so it definitely had that smilie vibe, though.

As Google transitions to Chat from Hangouts, it's discontinuing support for third-party chat apps like Pidgin--which I've been clinging hard to pretty much only because of its support for custom SA smilies. Technology and modding and poo poo has come a long way since that resource hit, though; is there a way to incorporate our smilies into some kind of custom emoji keyboard for Windows or Android? (I think there's one for iOS.) Hell, I'll make sure the people I use smilies with have the same software on their end so nothing gets tofu'd. Not being able to garnish my messages with a choice smartass smiley will suck. :(

Yeah, it's just my immediate family--folks, husband, kid--so Discord or Slack feels like overkill, especially if we don't use them for anything else. Oh, well. Thanks for the suggestions!

You know, I do have all of the smilies I use (and many I don't) as individual graphic files on my HDD, thanks to that custom Pidgin set...
