I was sort of "meh" months ago when I first read about it (mostly ignorance on my part), but the more I hear the more awesome it sounds. That, and the artwork samples are gorgeous. I hit my "squee" level pretty fast.

So I couldn't get the $70 level right now, but will there be more details and/or will be it be possible to buy the campaign setting separately later?

Internet_Commodus posted:Has anybody heard any updates on the Ryuutama translation? Last I heard "late August" was the goal and that's gotten pretty close. Ahh. That was before Tenra got close to completion, and now done. The last three months have been nothing both TBZ. Ryuutama is now on the backburner (well, has been as of a few months ago). We originally planned for a simultaneous Japanese (revised edition, PDF only)-French-English release this or next month, but that was before other longer projects swept that away. Currently we're going to ANNOUNCE it in late August, at JGC (Japan Game Convention). But it's eventual pre-sales (possibly a kickstarter; currently the plan is PDF only, but we might do a limited kickstarter for print copies) will happen towards the end of this year or the beginning of the next, once Tenra is settled. Plus, this last weekend I got a confirmation on a lot of really, really cool things towards a Ryuutama release, stuff that will take a while to ready before it's announced. But I have to get one white whale off my plate before tackling the next one. The difference is that Ryuutama and Tenra during the Announcement Stage is that Ryuutama is already 95% translated, just needs the final bits, a re-localization and edit, layout and likely a little more material. If you look at the pattern of earthquakes that happened off the Sanriku coast, they just had their big one and won't have another one like that in another century. That and following that same pattern, Tokyo's due for their big one within the next 20 years. Also, thanks for mentioning Isesaki. I miss Gunma.

Thirding the desire for physical copies of Ryuutama. PDFs and Ebooks are nice and all, but nothing beats flipping pages in your own book.

We have some folks who do beautiful layout, especially in the indie community, but a ton of it is still horrible, even among second-tier publishers, and a lot of top-tier is just okay, not really anything special.

I honestly don't know how it's gotten so bad at some companies. With White Wolf books I count any time they actually use a legible header font as a win. There are so many organizational and design problems that could be fixed if people just hired a good layout person. One of the reasons I'm confident in pledging for Tenra is that Luke Crane is working on that angle.

Pledging $55 to Tenra Bansho Zero. I played in an excellent demo at Gen Con last year. The Kiai economy seems like it would be a lot of fun to explore in an extended campaign. Plus, I got to be a samurai prince with a giant robot on rollerblades!

Sometimes poo poo comes up. If you pledge at the end of the campaign when you know you have the money, you don't have to worry about the ignition in your car locking up and costing 400 bucks to replace between now and the end of the kickstarter.

Started a Ryuutama campaign yesterday over roll20 with some online friends and my own jumbled translation of the rules. It was very nice, in a way that I'm not used to tabletop games being. The quest of the first adventure involved putting an end to a series of raids on an inn's food supplies by a pair of catgoblins. When the party found them, they ended up healing their sick child in exchange for a promise that the goblins would move on peacefully. No combat occurred. The party spend about half an hour, without prompting, playing out eating dinner, with no actual relevance to ongoing plotlines. Mechanically, the system is fairly simple, but functional. There's some weirdness we found where camping outside can be more beneficial than paying for cramped lodgings, and it's unexpectedly easy for characters to fail at things, so the GM needs to be prepared for the party to mess up repeatedly, especially with a low-level group. My favorite mechanic is probably the daily Condition Check, because what other system has rules for waking up on the wrong side of the bed and having it throw off your groove for the rest of the day? Overall everyone had a huge amount of fun. It's a system that encourages characters to spend a lot of time just being characters at each other, and that was before I added in the house rule to allow player nominations of good roleplaying moments at the end of the session for bonus XP. Looking forward to getting further into this.

The latest Tenra Bansho Zero update quote:I'm going to reskin Tenra to loosely simulate a particular console RPG franchise that I PERSONAlly like a lot. It's not going to be a 1 to 1 conversion, because that would bring up copyright concerns (I'm not interested in stealing ideas, just building things from a similar origin point), but it will certainly be inspired by it (and a few other series; honestly there's about 3-4 popular franchises of "high school students fight occult horrors after school"). In short, a game where the player characters are Japanese high school kids in a dark/grim world of ancient and mysterious supernatural horrors, where they can summon magical demons to fight for them at night. School drama by day, fighting for the fate of the world and their own souls by night.
