I've played the full English version for a review and I can confirm that it uses Ultimate (X) and Monokuma, as well as some other significant translation changes from the LP version, so it's pretty clear that reviewer probably didn't actually play the copy they were given.

Edit: A bit late of a reply but I don't look in this thread much since I'm trying to avoid spoilers and I figured I'd mention it.

Now I'm curious, could you give one or two really flagrant examples?

I'd prefer to stick to ones that are mentioned in the first chapter but probably the most significant is Genocide Jack instead of Genocider Syo.

The English release also contains the bonus School Mode from the Vita version which isn't translated in the LP and really is something that should be discussed in a review since it adds a chunk of extra content to the game. (Also makes it infinitely less tedious to get all the Free Time segments done.)

The first DR game doesn't actually have much indecipherable Japanese cultural stuff (SDR2 does, but that's an entirely different can of translation worms). It does reference many video games, though, but most of those had been released in the west as well and it would be interesting to see if they did some research to handle those lines properly.

It kind of irritates me that that kind of stuff is what people are looking at when considering the quality of a translation, though.

I found the translation pretty good but I didn't play through the Japanese version to directly compare. The characters had distinct voices and for the most part the jokes and translations quirks came through as best as I could expect. Sakura speaks in a fairly stiff, formal and slightly archaic way but it's mostly through dialogue writing and word choice. She isn't Mr. Thou or anything. There are a few oddities that stand out but they're kind of unavoidable. It may feel differently to someone who has actually played through the Japanese versions of course.

It's almost certainly marketing, yeah. They don't want to alter the most marketable character's name. They're obviously not opposed to altering names in general but in this case Monokuma is the mascot and they probably just want him known as Monokuma everywhere. It's silly but what can you do?

Nice to see it's getting release for sure though and I can imagine that when the pre-orders on SDR2 do well we will finally get DR3.

If he was already (mistakenly) posting about the game coming out that means they likely already have the voice recording done because otherwise it doesn't make much sense for him to assume the game was coming out when he hasn't done voicework for it yet.

Or is it a Persona/S.Link type situation where if I wanna get everything, I need to follow a guide to the T?

Also, i just want a list of Hifumi's references. He's already referenced Dragon Ball and someone named Meena.

School Mode. It's a "What If" mode where things go wrong at the start of the game and no mutual killing occurs so Monokuma puts you to work making robots for him instead and it's entire casual interaction + light sim elements.

It's pretty likely that they don't actually want to risk trademark infringing on the actual thing Gundam. NISA has done this before. (They changed the Mana Khemia character Gunner Dam to Flay Gunner in the English release.) Gundam games are still getting US releases with Dynasty Warriors Gundam and all and it could be an issue. You can get away with more in Japan with that stuff than you can in the US.

It's really interesting to play Danganronpa 2 for myself after the LP. the LP glosses over (intentionally or intentionally) a lot of things which really do change how I look at certain things. Some of that is a translation difference (and I'm only on Chapter 2 so far) but just changing up the order of Free Time events really changes how you look at the game and plot.

I'd be interested to hear what you think I glossed over - we've been trying to be pretty exhaustive.

Glossed over might be the wrong word, but if you investigate things on your own you'll find hints or such which really foreshadow things that don't show up in the semi-random LP format. I did Chiaki's Free Time events for example and while I may be misreading them, they seem to hint really strongly at a few things I suspect are supposed to be plot twists.

orenronen posted:

Also, if you can, there are just a few specific details I'm very interested to hear about - specifically, Hanamura's breakdown and the entire character of Sonia: did she talk about that Japanese superstition of surrounding your house with water bottles? How does her intermixing of very polite (but slightly unnatural) Japanese with the most random cultural references to '80s era dramas and inappropriate slang work? And, of course, if you're on chapter 2, what did they do with "gokai shita"?

Hanamura's voice actor adopts a deep (but terrible) Cajun accent. I'm not sure how well it conveys the idea because it's honestly not very hard to understand although it gets thicker and more incoherent the more he freaks out.

Sonia still talks about Japanese dramas and superstitions. As near as I can tell they kept all of her Japanese things intact but just made sure to preface them with "Japanese" or add an extremely minor dialogue change to make it clear she's talking about random outdated Japanese stuff. Most of the heavy lifting is helped by Hinata's internal dialogue. The slang is mostly covered by having her slightly-misspeak more recognizable English slang instead.

What you translated as "Dull Start" is instead "Down Five" in bloody text.

The whole point is that Hinata doesn't get the secret content because he thinks the game is over, but Nanami shows him what to do. "Down Five" isn't really much of a riddle, it's just telling you what to do.

As it is presented in-game, it looks like it's effectively "five people are dead" or something like that. It's written like part of the Game Over text in bloody dripping letters. Hinata even has a comment where he says that is his reading of it.

The other thing I worry about is how much care went into translating Nanami's video game references. I personally went and researched official translations of games she quotes, so here's one for ImpAtom to comment on if he's done her free time events: at one point she references Abarenbou Tengu, a late Famicom game about a tengu head that fights the Statue of Liberty at one point (this is the scene Nanami references). The game was released on the NES in the US as Zombie Nation with a sprite change of the player character into a disembodied samurai head. So, did they keep the reference at all? And if they did, was the research done to make the reference American-correct?

She references it as Zombie Nation and they updated the reference to mention a samurai head. Every video game reference I've seen so far feels pretty accurate.

I will say that one thing I find frustrating about DR1 and 2 is that it suffers really heavily from Phoenix Wright Syndrome where it really wants you to submit one specific piece of evidence even if you can think of other valid ones. I think it hurts DR a little more because the ability to absorb testimony and shoot it back makes it even more convoluted. It's pretty common for most adventure games to have that problem but the action elements seem to hang it harder on DR.

ImpAtom

She was already shown as early as chapter 1 but I don't remember any mention of siblings from Hagakure, Asahina or Chihiro.
