Can someone explain to me why everyone hates Ultra Despair Girls so much?

I don't know anything about it mind you. I can make some guesses about why you might hate it from the name alone but I wouldn't figure fans of these games have issues with such things.

I've only watched till the end of Chapter 1 but I don't mind Miu. I wouldn't say I like her but I think she's a better written bully/rear end in a top hat character than, say, Hiyoko in DR2. This is mainly because the cast doesn't just roll over to her insults and actually snaps back at her. She doesn't get to throw around snide remarks with impunity.

The only character I don't like so far is Tenko. "Hates men" really isn't a great trait to define your character, especially not when you bring it up every other sentence for no reason.

I feel Tenko has more going on then that.

There is probably more to her character but its overshadowed by the fact that every other sentence has her whining about men even when its completely irrelevant. If she doesn't mellow out soon its gonna get really grating.

Chapter 2 thoughts: Any country that is entirely dependent on a highschooler to not fall apart probably should collapse and get a competent government setup instead.

Also normally I don't react much to these games but Ryoma's motive video really got to me.

Really surprised by how much I like this cast more than the DR 1/2 cast. The characters on a whole seem a lot more interesting and, more importantly, competent. Its not just the same two people solving basically every trial single-handedly from what I've seen.

Just finished it myself, and... yeah, I have to agree! (Though I always hated Monokuma, the little bastard...)

I have to wonder, though (Chapter 1 spoilers): Is this the reason for the fabled salt I've heard- Ye Olde Protagonist Switcheroonie? Because I'm partially disappointed myself, I would have genuinely liked a female protagonist.. though I do think that was a graceful way to do it... Because while Kaede and S were spending time together, all I could think about was how much both of them seemed like good protagonist material- as well as how uncannily like Naegi Kaede is, too much so to be, you know, a step up from him or from Hajime. And then by the time they were setting up the library, well...I thought it would turn out the way it did. But hey, having Kaede go out by making a failed gambit againt the villain, and thus being way more proactive than both previous protagonists... I can support that. Besides, I admire the case, too- eliminate both the protagonist and the most suspicious person in one good swoop? Gold star, Komaeda!

In short, I like it so far.

From what I've seen watching a stream;

A lot of people think the idea behind the protagonist bait & switch is good, but they end up mad about it because they like Kaede more than Shuichi. Which is understandable; Shuichi is extremely similar to the protags of the past two games while Kaede was a breath of fresh air. Keep in mind that for a lot of people "is a girl" was enough to make them like Kaede more than the others since the series has had two male leads so far. I think people would of been less salty if the order had been reversed; you start as Suichi and end up as Kaede.

I don't really care about either of them though. What bugged me about it was how ridiculously convoluted the murder method was even by this series standards. There's no way that should have worked.

Also Monokuma is the only reason I care about these games. He's the best.

Interested in that stream if you have an archive.

I barely tolerate Monokuma and his various spinoff family members. Despite being refreshing at first, they've just become insufferable over time, and downright offensive sometimes (although maybe that's just the english writing failing).

Here. Only done with Ch 2 but he's been trying to stream a chapter a day so he should finish the whole game by the end of the week.

I don't see what's offensive about Monokuma though. The moments that really gross me out in this game are when it becomes perverted for no reason and Monokuma definitely isn't responsible for that.

Chapter 3 Trial

Man I liked Korekiyo because despite looking like a total creep he actually came off as one of the smarter and more sensible characters in the series.

SO MUCH FOR THAT

The voiceacting seems really good to me so I don't get why you'd go with the Japanese voices. I'd say Miu and Kokichi's characters are carried entirely by their voice actors.

I can't wait for Danganronpa 4: We Decided We Wanted More Money

Ending talk: I like this game's ending a lot because I'm a big fan of the "let this loving go already" narrative. I think that's a lesson a lot of people could learn from. Also I always thought the over-arching doomsday plot of Danganronpa was dumb as hell so to have the game go "yeah its all a lie" we actually pretty nice.

But given this series has a spin-off game and a spin-off anime the message feels a bit hypocritical. If they ever do anything with this property again it'll be totally ruined.

Kiyo was one of my favorite characters.

Chapter 3 trial Keyword being was. Having him turn into an incest serial killer kind of ruined him. I liked him a lot more as a really strange guy that was just enthusiastic about all aspects of humanity, both ugly and beautiful. That was a lot more interesting to me than "I'm totally insane lets stab some girls for sister".

Thoughts on characters after the entire game;

Himiko, Gonta, Ryoma, Kokichi were my favorites. Himiko and Gonta don't really have much depth but I just liked their gimmicky personalities okay. Ryoma I really wanted to see more out of but I think the role he played in the story was very appropriate. I didn't mind him dying early. I didn't expect Gonta to actually be a culprit but him being tricked into it really isn't the same thing. On that note, Kokichi is amazingly written. He goes from being an annoying twerp to a menace to seemingly the ultimate threat. Its all just endless tricks from him though, and despite expecting him to be loving around its really hard to tell the truth from the lies with him. Really entertaining.

Only characters I hated were Maki and Tsumugi. Maki is dumb edge crap that is just tiresome. Tsumugi was insanely boring up until the last trial cause she never does anything.

I also enjoyed
Himiko: She was smart.... But she was also really, really dumb.
Gonta: Don't say such mean things. Killing game bad, not Miu. Gonta thinks we could have been friends, if things different.
Himiko: That... might've been difficult even without the killing game.
Maki: That would never happen.
Kokichi: No way.

That's the most realistic response to Miu's bullshit. Its part of why I enjoy her as a character; she acts like a huge rear end in a top hat but instead of everyone ignoring that for the sake of ~friendship~ most of the cast hate her guts.

I kind of wish she had been one of the survivors just to see how she would respond to the final trial.

I've said it before but the fact the game just would not stop sexualizing her may have made the protagonist switch a blessing in disguise. And that was just one chapter. I don't think I could have gone a whole game with that poo poo.

I mean the game doesn't stop sexualizing every other female character so its not really that much better anyways. This series could do without that but :japan:

From what I've seen the split is right down the middle. People either love it or hate it with very little middle ground.

I'm gonna write a bunch of words about the ending now because i really liked it :words:

So I disagree with the notion that the ending doesn't condemn any of the fans. I don't think its saying anything negative about the audience for these games in general or trying to make you feel like a monster for playing them. However, I do think it targets two particular types of people and criticizes them pretty heavily.

The first would be people that base their entire identity around media they produce and consume. This is basically Tsumugi's entire character. A lot of people think she is really boring, and I honestly think she was intentionally written this way. Tsumugi is an extremely shallow person that revels in fiction and has built up an entire persona around it. She doesn't have any apparent value outside of her position as the writer of Danganronpa. She constantly references it and other works of fiction because that's all she thinks about. She's supposed to be the worst of both fans and content producers. Despite being such a rabid fan of media, she doesn't examine it on any meaningful level. She just mindlessly consumes and produces it for the most basic form of enjoyment. That's why she strongly insists that fiction can't affect reality despite adoring it so much. She doesn't attempt to derive any sort of meaning out of it. Its all created purely for her own pleasure an that of others.

The second would be people that aren't open to the media they consume going in directions they aren't comfortable with. Keebo is literally an audience surrogate that is constantly being polled to manipulate the show in ways they desire. Keebo is the desire for this series to maintain the status quo. I feel like the audience comments during the fight with Keebo are too specific to not be targeted at these kinds of people. They really sound like the kind of stuff you hear from people whenever a story goes in the direction they don't want. And the resolution of the story isn't necessarily you convincing all these people to change their views, but rather them abandoning the show because it no longer pleases them.
