Well, this kind of sucks. I was near the end of chapter 2 when the X, O and Triangle buttons in my PSP just completely stopped working at the same time for no apparent reason. Amazing. Wonder if I should get a new one or try to fix this thing first. My PSP went to hell just a few lines after the voting. The game was just going on about voting, the technicalities about the real culprit and all that when I realized basically no buttons were working anymore. I can kind of guess what's gonna happen after that but still. Not that there's ever a good time for PSPs going to hell, but man that was a bad time.

Gotta say, I'm liking the murders way more in this game than in the first one. I'm not sure if they are harder or anything like that, but it just feels like the writer put a lot more thought into them this time. Like it seems more like the mysteries were designed more carefully to make the player have the wrong expectations as opposed to making him not know what to expect. I kind of like that type of mystery design better. Not sure if I'm making sense, hope I'm getting my point across here.

One new PSP later and I'm done with Chapter 5 in DR2. I really, really enjoyed Nagito's case. I figure some people were/are going to be letdown by the solution, but considering the game's premise and setting I think it's really important to have something like this happen. And it fits Nagito's character pretty well too, though I do wish he had stayed alive. Kind of curious about where the game is going with this now. But yeah I really liked the dynamic here, it's probably my favorite case in both games. I don't know if I'm just a sucker for "funky device making normally impossible culprit be responsible" type plots(I totally am) but I just really liked the way it played out. It's completely a dick move to even let that type of murder be valid but that's within character so hey.

By the way, how many chapters does the game have again? 6 like the first one? I think the only thing I'm not looking too much forward to now is that Nagito is dead. I loved the way he went out, but he was my favorite character in the game. Not that he was the best written or anything, but he just had that thing where he carried a certain presence in the story. Like if anyone else said something it would be perfectly normal, but he if he said it you just paid more attention to him because he was a psycho and just standing there changed any scene's tone a bit.

Is Spike is selling an ebook version of Zero anywhere? I'm not overly fond of importing books so if there's an ebook version that would be much, much better. Plus it's easier to look up words on the dictionary with an ebook which would be pretty helpful since I'm still in the process of learning not to feel suicidal when reading Japanese. I kind of miss speculating in the LP thread, but I think I'm enjoying the game far more this way than I would have if I had been discussing it. One thing I didn't really "get" about the game until now is that the sense of speed in the debates sort of flows with the pacing of the trials too and that kind of gets lost when just reading it instead of playing it(Not criticizing the LP, I honestly think that's just one of the things that just can't be translated to LPing too well because of the format). Plus this is finally getting me back to learning Japanese which is nice.

There's no ebook version of Zero, but you can get the 上巻 here and either just copy it to a text file or run it through 青空キンドル to get a vertical PDF depending on what looks better on your ebook reader (if you're not like me with an old-rear end keyboard Kindle then you probably don't want a PDF though). You're on your own for the 下巻, unfortunately. Paper only.

Thanks! I ended up borrowing it from a friend just to finish it before going on with the game but I ordered it just to support the series/maintain a borderline obsession with collecting tie-in books.

It's more of a philosophical problem for me - change the Ok/Cancel pattern? Sure - that's convention that's been set a long time ago and you'd be stupid not to change it for a western audience. Change actual mini-game controls that have nothing to do with accepting and canceling? Why even do that? Someone out there at Spike did design this thing to work a certain way and you're just messing up their work.

For this particular mini-game, I thought sliding my thumb between the circle-triangle-square button arc was a nice touch.

I don't know much about PSP hacking and know even less about the translation(didn't play it) but is it even possible to swap the buttons for the menu while still keeping the buttons the same for the minigame? Maybe they didn't have a way of changing the rest of the game without changing the minigame too.

just finished DR2 and replayed it a bit right after it because drat the game is fun. Time to ramble!

First of all I'd just like to share an irrational fear I had: I was really, really irrationally and unreasonably afraid they were gonna have Sonia kill herself because of her last name. I'm really glad that didn't happen.

Overall, I liked the ending a lot more than DR1's ending. I think DR1's ending felt a bit anticlimactic because as hard as the game tried, it was kind of hard to buy into the "despair" bit as tension. It was like, hey, Junko is there, vote her and get out of the school. Would probably have worked better(for me anyway) if chapter 5 and 6 were merged and there was no downtime between the fake execution and Junko. In DR2 the ending felt it had like it had a lot more building up to it and the tension was great. Plus the cameos were pretty fun. I think that the despair theme was even more over the top here than in the last game(seriously I can't imagine the characters doing like half of what they were said to have done, but that was the point I guess) but I think the game's aesthetic also improved a lot and the game does a really good job at getting you to just roll with it.

My main complaint with the game is that there are a few things that were a bit too blatantly made to screw with people but weren't adequately justified in the story. Like "Togami" and Nagito, it was a bit like "So they look like them because...?" I don't know, I was kind of hoping there would be a reason for that but unless I missed it(could be the case, I'm not too fluent in Japanese or anything) there wasn't much of an explanation, especially about Togami. "Togami" especially annoyed me because he didn't even use his talent during a trial(which would have been pretty fun) so when I got to his free time thingy all I was thinking of was "So this character was just created so they could kill him off for shock without actually killing Togami" which annoyed me a bit. I mean with Nagito there's at least the fact that existing for the sake of contrast is sorta explanation enough. Kiiind of literally considering that thing between chapters where he goes Ocelot. Anyway, I really liked the game though. Hinata was one of the best characters in the game and I didn't expect that at all. Sonia really grew on me too especially when she didn't kill herself(...I'm irrational I know) even though understanding her was hell.

Also I really liked the final lines of the game when Kirigiri(think it was her) went "Yeah you are on your own. We are not helping you with the cover story." That totally makes me wish there was some sort of MIB/buddy cop comedy spin off with those three. Nagito went full Ocelot and therefore DR3 should be a Metal Gear plot where he and his freakish ghost arm planned everything in the last two games against all previously established information, 'is what I'm getting at.

I dunno, Nagito didn't look THAT much like Naegi.

Yeah that's fair. It's mostly "Togami" that bothered me and I just lumped Nagito under that complaint. He's not nearly as bad of a case and it sorta makes sense thematically so it doesn't really bother me.

By the way, going through DR1 now in Japanese because...I don't know. No idea why I'm not using the translation. It looks good and all I just didn't think of using it even though it would be way more practical. Well, uh, anyway... I'm pretty sure I misunderstood something on Togami's free time and have no idea what he actually meant. I think.

DR1 spoilers:
Togami said that the successor of his family was determined by a game and everyone who lost was killed. Did I misread that or is the Togami family really that cartoonishly metal?

In the translation, he says they were all killed, then when you flip out over it he says something like "not literally you idiot! They are just exiled which is as good as being dead."

Oooooh. That makes far more sense. Thanks! drat, I wish it was as ridiculous as I thought it was. Still, I liked his backstory.

I feel extremely silly for having imported the Japanese version and buying the game again - but what the hell. I'm a sucker for murder mysteries and I might as well encourage the company to bring the sequel. Which I also imported. And will also likely buy it again if it comes over while feeling silly about it again.

Why? Are the books that bad or is it just the standard 'tie-in that is only partially canon at best' thing that happens to series sometimes?

I believe they are meant to be completely canon. They aren't written by Kodaka, but he's consulting on them.

I commented on them elsewhere, but I find them to be very strange reads. They're fun as gimmicky difficult but fair murder mysteries, and I like the way Kirigiri herself is portrayed (as well as the narrating character), but pretty much every other character in the books is just played as a complete cliche, and not even interesting cliches at that. Most of them are horrible people, too. The books also tend to be excessively grotesque (even in DR terms), which was offputting sometimes, especially with a 12 year old Kirigiri in the middle of all of all of it.

Ah, that's interesting, thanks for the information. I'm a sucker for fair murder mysteries, but I'm also a huge, unapologetic baby when it comes to grotesque and graphic murders so maybe I should stay away from it for the most part. Kind of neat that they have murder mysteries in them though, for some reason I was thinking it would be more about the character than anything else.

I'd just like to note that there's very few things in life as funny as convincing a gym bro into playing Dangan Ronpa and watching him be forced to come up with different variations of the terms "This gently caress" and "that gently caress" to apply to each and every character because he can't remember their names.

(Yes, I have a ticket)

I'm torn between whether I should be more amazed by Sakura or Hagakure. Wearing that wig has got to hurt your neck a little, it's admirable. They really went all out with the production values there, those costumes look really impressive.

Playing through the translation now, man. Gundham's voice actor is amazing, he's the hammiest bastard alive. He sounds straight out of a bad video game dub like Arc Rise Fantasia or something. Kind of prefer him to his Japanese voice actor, actually.

Personally, because I hate it enough that I try just not talking about it in the hopes I can convince myself it's not that bad.(It is exactly that bad)

...Also I'm a shallow murder mystery nerd, and the second game has a lot better trials than the first one, so that's what I focused on instead. Even if I'm not a huge fan of the overall plot.

Speaking of DR2 riffing on the first game...was there ever a reason for the fake to be copying Togami aside from 'let's gently caress with the players'? Like, I get that he had his reasons for impersonating someone, but for it to be specifically Togami just felt a bit silly. I mean I understand that they wanted a shocking death without actually killing off anyone important, but to me it felt a bit of a lazy way of doing that.

I'm holding off on importing the game for now in case it gets localized, but I just took a look at some gameplay videos and...man, those production values are goddamn impressive. This is one of the best looking Vita games I have ever seen, if not the outright best. They really had a budget for this one, huh.

I don't have any complaints about Monobear's English voice, to be honest. My only complaint about the translation was when they referred to the culprit as "blackened" or something like that instead of a more natural sounding word. I'm sure they had a reason for it, but man it read off really awkwardly. Like to be fair it wasn't even used that often, but whenever it was I remember just thinking "C'mon. Say culprit. Say culprit. Say--goddamn it." Just sounded weird.

I'm gonna pass on Another Episode. I might be in the minority here, but I'm actually not a huge fan of the series' character writing or world building. Not really my thing, not a huge fan of the tone by itself. I usually play the series for the murder mysteries. Take those away and I'm just not very interested in it, especially considering the actual content in the game makes me more than a little uncomfortable. Will get back to the series the moment they announce a new murder mystery game, though.
