Alien is a fantastic conceptual movie, if a little too slow for today's standards. Fantastic effects for 79, a really good woman protagonist, the horror formula of everyone being picked off one by one with HR Giger in the background. Some of these elements remain rare, some of them are now staples. Prometheus is also a conceptual movie but one that offers nothing. The premise of the movie seems to explain things that no one asked, while only raising more questions in the process. The characters are still bound by a Horror Moviesque narrative of which they cannot escape in a movie that fancies itself to be more than that. Some good performances here and there, some fantastic special effects, but I don't think any of these save this movie's shortcomings, which is trying to marry a plot with a movie format that only serve to detract from each other instead of letting the movie be free and become its own thing. Perhaps what irks me the most is that the pertinent questions asked have nothing to do with the franchise and are not answered in any meaningful or intelligent way. The pertinent questions asked in the context of the franchise only lead to more questions, and not due to some deep philosophical reasoning. The questions presented were not needed, the answers given were non-answers, and the whole movie presents itself as more intelligent than it really is, while fitting everything into the same horror formula that offers nothing new. This movie reminds me of all the Evangelion clones that want to be as successful as the original but miss the point completely and instead just spew nonsense in the hopes that it'll be considered deep. Except the original in this case would be some Nolan movie instead of Alien, and Prometheus doesn't give you the gestation period of wonder before realizing the entire movie is composed of plot holes. 2/5
