No you don't need track tires.

I mean, yeah if you have some really crap all-seasons, I could see getting a set. But if you have any acceptable stock tires, then no.

I'm told that a pro driver should be able to do ~1:48 around there in my car ('06 Cayman S on Hankook V12s; stock apart from a bunch of cooling mods and Pagid Oranges). The YouTube video shows a 1:51.5xx lap with a passenger. Next session I was able to do 1:50.3xx without, which means there's around 2 seconds to pick up here and there. Thoughts anyone?

e: bonus crashed M3 at 21:10

looked fine to me, and I know, because I do a lot of iracing, so you know I'm good (Don't make me fraps a lap because I will).

Also, I'll join speedventures in Fontana sometime once my car is broken in. I want to go up to Laguna Seca some time in the next 5 years... gotta do that.

This weekend, drat...

How do they run theirs? Speed ventures has color coded classes, do they work similarly?

General question: If your car is brand new, what do you really need to bring to a track day? Brake fluid and pads and tools to change those?

I was fine, I don't wanna say it but I'll say it, thousands and thousands of laps in iRacing made me feel pretty comfortable on the track watching for other cars and focusing on my line and brake points etc. The downside to racing internet cars is they are internet race cars, not street cars with stability control and ABS etc. So I was super cautious with the gas in slow speed turns because what an iRacing C6R can do with a flick of the gas pedal is embedded in my brain. Next time I will at least try to get stability control to kick in just once so I can find what limit the car will let me turn. That will probably be in the Andretti Hairpin :3:

I was in a god drat fast beginner's group too. I'm comparing our times with previous meets and we were definitely quicker.

From my first track day experience i'd say you just need a set of grippier pads (mostly so you keep your daily driver pads longer). I didn't even put on my rear Hawk pads because my car is clearly so front biased. If you're just going to do that one day ever I don't even think i'd worry about pads, just be prepared for fade.

Is there any way to get around these concerns or is the solution just having a dedicated track car?

Keep traction and stability control on? My car feels like the motor has died when those kick on and I've gone past the danger slip angle, itd be very hard to wreck it unless I was trying to.

I was at Laguna Seca for the first time this weekend

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ1tPjgpAT8

Couldn't get any good footage because my mic came unplugged, so all I got was my first session with me coasting into braking zones too much and being really slow at the corkscrew.

I don't know if my tires are poo poo (Pirelli P-Zero) or if I just need to air up the fronts a lot like someone suggested on a mustang forum to stiffen the sidewalls, but it was getting loose after a couple laps, that's the bonus footage at the end of the video.

Is 9am and already 90 degrees at Auto Club Speedway. I think I'm just gonna do one session and leave before it gets hot as balls.

edit: Did 2 sessions since the first was crowded and really slow (shown in video, only got one decent lap in). I was actually passing people today, that's a new thing, definite sign of improvement. My goal was 2:10 or lower today but finished with a 2:11. This video shows a 2:13 with a little traffic and me lifting for a debris flag, otherwise I think I have the 2:10 pace down. Just need to get more agressive with the throttle out of the turns.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD4eYMARDWg

Didn't get my second session on video because I was in the middle of lunch when I noticed my group was on the track, woops, no time for camera setup!

You guys and your fancy wheels. I'll find out if Pilot Super Sports are any better than P-Zeros tomorrow.

Longpig Bard
Dec 29, 2004

So my first track day on the Pilot SS was OK. Compared to the Pirelli P-Zero, I think they have stiffer sidewalls because they seemed more responsive at turn in and holding the turn. That kind of screwed me up because I'm used to really leaning into the turn and cranking the wheel to get the Pirellis to go where I want, I kept mistaking the responsiveness for oversteer and backing off too much in slow corners.

Oh I also went 20mm wider with this set so that also explains some of the difference in feel.

Longpig Bard
Dec 29, 2004

Which group are you in? Blue group is going to be crazy slow the first session or two because they will be doing lead-follow instruction with people that probably haven't been on a track before. That first session could be good for you just to see the track layout, but the lap times will be like 3 minutes. If you're comfortable on the track you can ask to go into the purple group after so you're with drivers that know track etiquette and are comfortable running at speed with each other.

I think its another iRacing habit, in the sim you only need to turn maybe 120 degrees to get enough rotation so I've been doing that on track, these guys have to turn it 180+
