I race Superkarts in Oz, and just achieved my first ever round win on the weekend. Pretty stoked! Puts me in the lead of our club championship too. Here's the results from the event. Whoever posted the news article found my GoPro footage (I'm no pro video editor) on their own which is pretty cool. The GPS unit for my data logger arrived yesterday so I'll try out that RaceRender software after the next round.

drgitlin posted:Seconding the pad suggestion, and it's also worth getting a spare set of pads IMO, especially if you're going to do multiple stints in a day and you sweat - putting on a helmet with damp pads is horrible, and if you can take one set out to let them dry and swap them over you'll be a lot more comfortable. I have the same issue with the ears. It's easily fixed with a balaclava. This also helps alleviate sweating issues too - your helmet won't start to stink over time and the balaclava can just go straight in the wash.

Had a close call last time out in the superkart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIFeXIQV7lY Two things learned: 1. Even though I've started winning races this year I'm still pretty inexperienced when the unexpected occurs. I instinctively moved to go around the spinning 51 even though it's obvious you run out of room doing it. It's obvious what you're supposed to do (in this instance tuck back in behind 69), just hard to train the body to do it in the split seconds that count. 2. Low ride height + uneven ground = stranded go kart!

Cheers. It did grate a little at the time though, as luckily for 51 his spin left him stalled on the very verge of the track so he just let the field by and then trundled off, leaving me the only casualty.

It could have ended a LOT worse, wet grass might have been to my advantage in this case. I'm going to try to convince them to let me plastidip the coupe we build this winter some bright obnoxious color, possibly change it between races. I like the clown in the rear view at 13:20.

I also set a new PB at VIR during qualifying. 1.1s better than my old time with 100 extra lbs of ballast in the car. Nice job, actual racing competition is awesome. I was looking into what kind of lap times my go kart can punch out at VIR, and found some guys doing 2:12's in them, which is pretty wild. Here's me blasting around here in oz.

Speaking of spins: Lost my right rear wheel at 100mph. My weekend was going well up till that point, took pole and won the first two heats. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiVAyM8NpFqN51-8uJMiDR-h1SdSHb5np

BraveUlysses posted:Welcome to At the time, no. The loss of control came on so suddenly I thought I had been punted for a moment, then I saw the wheel bouncing off into the gravel. Looking at the video though it does seem to track a little too keenly to the right (at the Hayshed if you know the track) on the way up to the left hander where it failed. Didn't notice at the time.

I managed to keep all 4 wheels on the kart this time, allowing me to take out the round win last weekend! Here's some close racing with 3 other guys all day.

VelociBacon posted:That's killer. I started to look at karting a month back, realistically are there karts that a 6'2" person fits into or do you have to be a shorter guy? You're not going to be as comfy as a 5'10" fellow, but it wouldn't be a problem. In this video kart 97 is being driven by a fellow who is about 6'4".

I'm a madman that drives without seatbelt or rollcage, but can I suggest that if you're shaken by the events, now is a good time to review the safety gear on your ride?
