Dramicus posted:I beg to loving differ. Really? What timeline/game do you think falls on its face the worst? There are some total war games that can be hated on for a lot of good reasons (AI is poo poo, performance is terrible, bugs, too much micro, too little micro, ect.) but it seems like people keep playing even the most 'broken' games because they love the time period and it draws people in. There was some youtube video that showed the average players of all the TW games on steam over time and it's amazing how many people continue to play Empire, Medieval 2 and other older titles.

Captain Beans posted:Really? What timeline/game do you think falls on its face the worst? All of that is true, and none of it precludes TW games from having questionable game design decisions. It also doesn't help that Creative Assembly is basically the only company making Total War style games, it's literally the only game in town. That being said, a lot of their decisions relating to agents, with the exception of 3 Kingdoms removing them, have been bad. I'm also one of those few who adamantly insists that Shogun 1 and Medieval 1's boardgame style maps were and still are superior to the 3d maps we started getting with Rome 1. I would say the 3d maps have gotten to the point where they are tolerable with Warhammer and 3 Kingdoms, but even so they take so much more work to implement and don't really add anything more to the experience that a map with 2d provinces doesn't have. Hell, there were more field battles in Shogun 1 and Medieval 1 due to the way the system was designed. You only got to a siege until the enemy stopped reinforcing the province. Also, 2d risk-style maps with set provinces and set links are a hell of a lot easier to program AI to understand and play well on. But to summarize CA's bad/questionable design decisions: - Agents (just terrible all-round, get rid of them and let them stay dead) - 3d maps (debatable, but I think it was better before) - Naval battles (Except for Warhammer 2, which is the perfect solution in my opinion) - recruitment (except for 3 Kingdoms) - fatigue (mostly because it's impossible to get right, either everyone gets exhausted and the whole thing becomes a slog by the end of the battle, or it has next to no impact and you can ignore it. They waffle between the two styles every couple games) - Economy (maybe fixed with Troy, but basically it's a case of it mattering at the beginning of the game, and you can essentially ignore it after turn 60 or so) - Diplomacy (was utter garbage until 3 Kingdoms) - Faction / Unit designs lack of diversity (Games like Shogun, 3 Kingdoms, Britannia, probably Troy are hamstrung by the adherence to history while simultaneously being a-historical [Shogun being one of the worst offenders] ) - Public Order (again one of those, it's a big problem, or you can ignore it entirely issues) That's all I can think of off the top of my head for now. Don't get me wrong, Total War is probably my favorite series and I have close to 1k hours per game for most of them. But CA is far from perfect. They have been doing much better since Warhammer 1 came out though. Hopefully they keep on that track. Keep in mind the state that Rome 2 was in at launch and they only just got around to fixing it in 2018 or so. There was a period shortly after the launch of Rome 2 and around the launch of Attila that many of us thought CA was going to go out of business, that's how bad it was at one point. Yeah CAs major strength is they are the only dev making this genre Id swap in a heartbeat to something new and more competent. They do occasionally have flashes of greatness like imo 3K and FotS

There are some contenders, but none with the same kind of resources. And you can see clear progress with CA games, the ones I've played were better than next one (skipped ThroB, because gently caress Vikings in Britain setting).

I don't know whether it's just so hard to make these games, or that one company already has such a hold on the market that it doesn't make sense to compete with them, but for some genres, there's only one game in town. I would appreciate more competition for Total War games, Sims games, or Grand Strategy games. But we're stuck with the companies that popularized those niches. Not that I'm super unhappy with CA or Paradox (CK3 looks like it will be an amazing upgrade to CK2), but it wouldn't hurt to have more options.

My first time using the epic store and drat is the DL speed slow, it's maxing at less than 2MB/s and dipping as far down as 300kb/s in periods. I don't know if I've ever seen Steam below 4MB/s.

Communist Thoughts posted:epic games store is genuinely as bad as they say and they haven't improved any aspect of it since launch I got game pass because it was super cheap and there were some games I wanted to try. And to be fair I guess I had fun with a couple games. Then I realized it was keeping massive install-files in addition to the regular game files and even after uninstalling they were sticking around. Found like 40GB file for Outer Worlds install a month after I had uninstalled the game and it was an enormous pain in the rear end to get rid of, I had to install some kind of cleaner program I think to do it. Also couldn't mod any games since the game pass folders are so protected. So that was the last time I ever use Microsoft's game pass for PC. Utter garbage in every way.

I think there's a way to find it somewhere but it's buried. The download is 16gb which is much lighter than I was expecting.
