Phyrrus was the Frederick the Great of the age. He was a skilled general who took a backwater nation and gave it an advanced military and was able to play on the main stage with all the other powers. The Romans had to beat him by grinding him down with their superior economy and manpower as they could never achieve a conclusive battle against him.

So sorry if this has been posted recently, I did a search but couldn't locate anything.

I'm going to Europe next week, and I just finished watching "Vikings" and I have a strong urge to play a Medieval era strategy game. Which means I want to give Medieval II another crack as its been sitting in my steam library, played sparingly, for the better part of a decade.

Are there any must have mods I should know about? Gameplay quirks? I also haven't picked up the Kindgoms expansion yet but it's generally on sale for $5 on steam so thinking of getting that as well if I can get into the main campaign.

Thrones of Britannia is set shortly after "Vikings" when the Anglo-Saxons fought back and re-took the island.

Yeah a good starting point would be the wars of apostasy. First reunite the peninsular, then expand against Rome and Persia and then side with either Ali or the Ummayads in a mid game civil war.

Heavy armour was exceedingly rare among Germanic and Arab tribes at 200 CE. The Roman legions themselves were equipped from huge industrial centres and mining complexes that would mostly be abandoned through the 3rd century crisis and during the volkerwanderung.

I really love the Iliad as a setting so I'll probably be making an Epic account for TW Troy. Also as for no DLC:

Amazons is a DLC for A Total War Saga: TROY that will also come out on the 13th of August 2020 – more details on this will be revealed soon.

Captain Beans posted:

This will be very interesting to see how they go about accomplishing that. I think the only way is to give infantry more spell like abilities, things like smoke, formations and caltrops from 3k. Otherwise it is pretty boring to differentiate units just based on stats. They should also take a page out of TW:Area and steal that game's system for hoplite phalanx formations where they had a special fatigue bar in formation that decreased as they killed dudes and moved forwards, and recovered as they scooted backward.

They've given us a few details so far:

https://www.totalwar.com/blog/bartering-bronze-and-battles-troy-and-the-bronze-age/

quote:

In TROY, we have tried to represent the full variety of weapons that we know existed at the time as well as make some unique functionality for units armed with the large Bronze Age shields. This allows them to sling the shields onto their backs and use their spears two-handed or to just move faster without those huge shields getting in the way.

...

We know that infantry was the focus of the age, so we have further refined the way light, medium, and heavy infantry feel on the battlefield by giving each group a more distinctive role. Heavy infantry is very strong and almost impossible to take down head on – but they are slow and vulnerable to flanking, which light infantry excels at by being more than twice as fast and able to manoeuvre the jagged Greek terrain.

Speaking of terrain, we have also made a lot of changes to the battle maps by introducing new terrain types like mud, which slows down heavy infantry and reduces their fighting capabilities, and tall grass, which allows some units to hide and move through it unseen. We’ve also introduced lots of natural chokepoints and flanking routes to make the battles feel even more tactical and engaging.”

Some new artwork has popped up on the TW forums:

Left to right it's: Agamemnon (???), Odysseus (Archer), Menelaus (???), Achilles (Fighter) -> Hector (Defender), Sarpedon (???), Paris (Archer), Aeneas (???).

The four classes are fighter, defender, archer and warlord. So I'm guessing Agamemnon and Aeneas are warlords, Menelaus is a defender and Sarpedon is a fighter.

Horse hair must be expensive in the bronze age. According to the TW website he has the best campaign abilities we've seen so far:

Menelaus: Can recruit units from factions he's allied to and can colonise ruins without an army by spending resources

Achilles: Has mood and renown mechanics. Not sure how they work

Hector: Does missions for Priam to become the chosen heir and confederate the Trojan factions. Has the best heavy infantry

Paris: Also has the Trojan heir mechanic and can use Helen as an agent on the campaign map

The new siege looks good coming from the Warhammer engine. The multiple layers of choke points look like they might just exacerbate the issue of actually defending the outer wall being a trap choice.

The devs also mentioned that the seige tower horses are a unique thing for assaulting Troy and it sounds like you have to do missions on the campaign to be able to use them.
