We cut cable 2 years ago and have never looked back. It started with us buying a laptop that had an hdmi port.
This last month we bought a new bluray player (after our old one died) ad it had several nice media streaming options.

We are now looking into getting a TV for our bedroom. My question is: which is the better value, a Smart tv such as Samsung or a non-smart tv with a roku box for media?

Is there a way to be watching a video stream on a laptop ad have it displayed on my tv through a roku 3?

I keep reading about plex and twonky but it seems like plex is more for local media and twonky is for smartphones (and iPhones do not work with flash which is the type of video stream).

The town I grew up in had one cable company (and still does). Satellite was still in its infancy so it was too expensive. For places like this, it could add true competition to many places.

Anyone else with a roku who dislikes the Netflix channel?

I have a roku 3 and I love Netflix, except on here. It takes forever to load the episode screen. There is no auto play for the next episode. When I click to choose another episode, it takes forever. I usually end up having to go to the home screen and then back to Netflix just to watch the next episode.

Anyone else having this issue?

I used my parents cable subscription to watch the Olympics (handball woo!) and the March madness tournament.

As long as it does not require you to have a certain modem (time warner's channel on Roku requires a time Warner modem), then you should be fine.

Edit: I was wondering. You mentioned Netflix and July as options to watch shows. What is July?

I wonder when they will officially cut off the promo since they never mentioned limited quantities before (I could be wrong).

Do they stop it with the next shipment or any orders after the announcement? If you bought one earlier today, would you still be eligible?

I have ustv and it works great.

As for my own issue with cutting cable, my cable Internet company has put a monthly allowance for bandwidth. We were going to be capped at 250. We checked our data usage for the month of August (they only allowed this for the first time on the day we got the email) and it was 303 GB. We only use the Internet for light usage (Facebook and the forums), and then streaming (Netflix, hulu plus, amazon prime and busy) to replace TV.

We were able to switch to a higher level with 350 GB of bandwidth (and it is actually cheaper than what we were paying) so hopefully it will not be an issue. It just surprised me that we use that much data in a month. (According to the data meter, 40 minutes of a kids show on netflix is 566 mbps which is equal to 28 hours of online gaming) The majority of our streaming is done for children's shows on Netflix and it is mostly background sound while we play with our daughters.

Is there any way to help reduce our usage when it comes to streaming (beyond the obvious of cutting back or turning it off when you are playing)?/

To those who used my referral link to Bing Rewards, thanks so much! This makes hitting those marks so quickly. I would say to get that information out to everyone as quickly as possible. In the matter of a month, I have gotten 3 months of Hulu for free.

I was wondering a question though. Previously I had thought about suspending Hulu for the summer time when shows are just reruns. If I add my Hulu months to my account and then suspend the account, will I lose all those months?

I'm wary of DRM and bandwidth usage but if it's an easy way to keep everything together, I'm willing to budge a little.

I originally signed up for Vudu a while back but never really used it. I then received an email about how you can convert DVDs and Blurays to digital copies at home. It is $2 for a DVD to SD transfer or HD to HD transfer and $5 for a DVD to HD transfer. The nice thing is that if you do 10 movies or more, it becomes half off (or $1 a movie). We transferred around 60 movies in a month (and have since added movies here and there from codes).

The biggest problems we have had is having a special edition copy that is not recognized by the VUDU system. Everything else is awesome (and I have contemplated renting movies from Family Video for a dollar and creating digital copies of them too but I have not yet). It is awesome to have a bunch of my daughters movies on VUDU so that they can watch them practically anywhere.

Newer movies would definitely be a problem but the older movies (from 2-3 years ago and before) should just be the DVD set. My in-laws have Dish network. They come over to our house but we do not have cable at all (smart blu-ray player, roku and chromecast).

When they come over, my father in law uses his Ipad to watch somethings with Dish Anywhere but he mentions how nice it would be to watch it on our tv.

Is there anyway to watch Dish Anywhere (they have a Hopper with Sling) on our Roku. I downloaded the Slingplayer channel but it does not seem to give the option to watch live tv on it.

Side note: I just found a Roku private channel called Nick Reboot. It is nothing but "Nickelodeon" shows from the 90s played on a random "live" stream. I just watched a Legends of the Hidden Temple followed by Doug and Animaniacs. This makes me feel very old but very young at the same time.

We pay $65 a month (including all fees and taxes) for cable internet with speeds up to 50 Mbps (only 20 by the time it goes through our system) with 350 Gb monthly cap.

3 years ago, we had that same cable internet (same price but slower speeds and no data cap) as well as paying over $100 a month for Direct TV. We got rid of Direct TV and just use Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime for all of our viewing. That is less than $25 a month if we paid for the services. We use Bing Rewards and get Hulu Plus for free. I did a RadioShack deal and got 18 months of Netflix for $30 (ends in September). I let my little brother use my Hulu and Netflix and he lets us use his Amazon account so that is free. We use our Sony blu-Ray player and Roku to stream all of these.

We have reduced our costs greatly with small purchases that are paid off in a few months. The only thing I wish we had was an antenna but we live in rural Illinois and cannot get a OTA signal. You have a lot more options that could help you save even more.

I set up the week trial for Sling TV and after 2 days, I cancelled. The video quality was fine. The biggest issue I had was the fact that I had forgotten how much crap is on tv. TNT was showing the 3 Matrix movies. tBS had 4 hours of Friends. hGTV was property bros after property bros. Food Network had 4 episodes of Guy Fieri shows in a row.

Almost 4 years of not having cable or satellite, I had forgotten how horrible the TV landscape was.

I ran into this with Dish. Call and ask for a retention specialist. You won't get the $35 again, but they will knock the price down if you even hint at wanting to cancel. This annoying part is that they'll only discount it for 6 months, so you'll have to call in twice to get through your last year.

Separate question and I apologize if it's been discussed before, but are there any cheap options for getting the basic broadcast channels? I'd like to cancel Dish and move to Sling TV or nothing at all, but my wife would kill me if we didn't have a way for her to watch the local news in the morning. I'd love to go OTA, but we live on the backside of a hill from all the towers.

I live in the middle of nowhere where we cannot get any OTA. Your best bet is, if you have cable internet, to see if you get digital channels through the same line as your internet. We just moved our set up around and are now able to hook into our tv. We get around 26 channels (all of the locals, WGN, cspan 1,2, and 3 as well as 12 PBS channels)

My question is that their provider is satellite so the IP does not have to be their cable provider (like TWC does). But does anyone know if there are device restrictions on it (# of devices on an account like Hulu or number of concurrent streams like Netflix).

Roku updated the Roku 3 and Roku2 today.
http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/6/8351299/new-roku-streaming-boxes-2015-announced

The Verge posted:

Roku is refreshing its very successful line of set-top boxes today. The new players have already appeared a bit prematurely at retailers in recent days, but today they're official. First up, the flagship Roku 3 is gaining voice search, which should put it on better footing against Amazon's Fire TV box.

It's basically what you'd expect; hit the dedicated voice search button on Roku 3's new remote, and speak out the name of a movie, show, actor, or director you're looking for. Results come up instantly, and in a brief demo, the Roku proved very accurate at understanding a spoken name or film title. As usual, you can click through and Roku's software will tell you where you can watch a specified movie or show based on which video services you currently subscribe to. You can initiate a voice search from anywhere (and at any time), though if you do so mid-movie, you'll briefly be taken out of Netflix or whatever app you were watching to see your results. The "new" Roku 3 retains its $99 price point.

Roku voice search

Another new software feature being introduced today, the Roku Feed, aims to give you a heads up whenever movies in theaters right now eventually make their way to on-demand services including Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, Netflix, and others. Add a film like Furious 7 or The Divergent Series: Insurgent to your feed, and Roku will automatically notify you the moment it's available to stream somewhere.

"Follow movies from the theater to your favorite streaming services"

This "Movies Coming Soon" feature is just the beginning of Roku Feed, so it should be interesting to see where else the company takes it. My request would be for the Roku to present users with its own list of movies and shows leaving Netflix and Amazon soon, but we're not there yet. For now, we've still got you covered there.

Roku movies coming soon

But the best announcement today is most definitely the new Roku 2. Roku's middle-of-the-line media streamer isn't really so "middle" anymore. It's been upgraded with the same hardware specs and speedy performance as the Roku 3. The two devices are basically identical now. By going with the Roku 2, you lose out on the 3's fancier voice-capable remote, but since you can also initiate voice search with the Roku smartphone app — also being updated today — that's unlikely to be a deal breaker for most people.

At $69, this much faster Roku 2 is a pretty nice deal when lined up next to the Apple TV and Amazon's set-top box. It's in the same "impulse buy" territory Apple was shooting for with its recent price cut, and I'd probably pick this over Apple's aging box — even if you won't be able to watch HBO Now for a few months. The shortcut buttons that Roku chooses for its remotes change from time to time. On Roku 3, you'll now see Netflix, Amazon, Rdio, and Hulu. On the Roku 2, Sling TV takes Hulu's spot, which should give Dish's internet TV service some nice exposure. Both new players are available starting now. Looking beyond today, the obvious question is when we'll see an even more powerful Roku 4, but the company is keeping quiet on that subject for now.

tl;dr
Roku 3s will now have voice search on the remote in the new product batches but at the $99 price point (explains why they seemed to be getting rid of older stock recently)
Roku app will now allow voice search.
Roku UI will now include a Roku Feed which will let you know when the movies that you are following are going to be stream-able. It could be used to let you know what movies are going off of Netflix and what movies are being added.
The biggest news is that the Roku 2's hardware is being upgrade to current Roku 3 specs and the price point is $69.

I am guessing that a Roku 4 is still a year away.

One of the main questions I would always get was "what is the difference between plus and not plus?"

Hulu now has all of your free content (8 day airings, etc). You can also pay to get access to all of those exclusive content. Seems simpler to explain. All one service, just different tiers.

In regards to the ads, they have never bothered me as they go less than a minute (2 minutes has been the longest but that has only been once or twice) compared to 3 minutes on cable.

Before I had to wait until a show appeared on Netflix. Hulu has let me watch shows the day after and allowed me to watch Moone Boy.

I have a roku 3 and I am having a problem with Netflix on it. I can watch programs on it but eventually it will come up with an error message along the lines of "We are having issues accessing this title. Please choose another title or try again later." When I try to play anything else, it will load slowly to 25% and then get stuck. Eventually, it will bring up that error message again. This will last for a day or so, then work fine only to do it again in a couple of days. If I try to play it on my IPad, there is no problem.

Anyone have an idea about what is happening and what I can do to fix it. I have already reset my modem, router and both roku 3's.

I did the system reset and it works again. The difference is that once one episode has this problem; I cannot play another title at all. It does not matter if I switch profiles or shows or episodes. Nothing works.

Also, it seems like once this happens on one Roku, the other Roku shows it too (but that could be just how frequently it is happening).
