Panthrax posted:I'm annoyed with DirecTV's and Dish's pricing as well. They'll give you a bunch of discounts for the first 12 months, but since you're in a 24 month contract, the price goes up to $$$ridiculous and you have no recourse to try to get discounts, since you're stuck no matter what. I'd rather they just flatten it, figure out how much the first 12 months are, the second 12 months, divide by 24 and just let me pay like $55/month instead of $35 the first 12, then like $80 the next 12. Or whatever it turns out to be. I ran into this with Dish. Call and ask for a retention specialist. You won't get the $35 again, but they will knock the price down if you even hint at wanting to cancel. This annoying part is that they'll only discount it for 6 months, so you'll have to call in twice to get through your last year. Separate question and I apologize if it's been discussed before, but are there any cheap options for getting the basic broadcast channels? I'd like to cancel Dish and move to Sling TV or nothing at all, but my wife would kill me if we didn't have a way for her to watch the local news in the morning. I'd love to go OTA, but we live on the backside of a hill from all the towers.

Your best bet is, if you have cable internet, to see if you get digital channels through the same line as your internet. We just moved our set up around and are now able to hook into our tv. We get around 26 channels (all of the locals, WGN, cspan 1,2, and 3 as well as 12 PBS channels) I live in an area where Comcast already encrypted the signal coming into our house. We were using that when we first moved in.
