Is there enough support for independence? I thought it was 35-40% depending on how the question is asked.

Jedit posted:The SNP are one of the rare cases where it doesn't, because the people they want to separate their national identity from are of identical ethnicity. I wouldn't call it identical. Heck, ethno-linguistic separation was one way they could justify the highland clearances and centuries of suppressing Gaelic and highland dress. Genetically the makeup of Scots, Irish, Welsh and English are quite similar but that has never been reflected in policy and culture, with the Anglo-Saxon vs Celt narrative in play. zero alpha fucked around with this message at 17:04 on Jun 18, 2012 |

What are the poll numbers For and Against independence? Google News has been quite unhelpful.

At this does it seem realistic that the Yes coalition can gain 25-30% support or so before 2014?

Highland clearances, land cost, indentured servitude, etc. contributed to the large waves of people leaving Scotland for America, as well as religious conflicts. Lots of the people who were driven out of Scotland for religious reasons (Covenanters, for example) made their way through Ulster and stayed for a generation or two before crossing the Atlantic, settling eventually in the Carolinas and Appalachia. This latter group is called Scots-Irish and makes up a large part of America's population, especially in the Southeast and Lower Atlantic.

So if the referendum fails in 2014, what then? Will the Nats try again in 2024 or something, or just give up for good?

I think they have already decided upon the question, "Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country?" Phrasing it in such a way is actually advantageous for the Nationalists, as it gives the impression that voting for independence is simply agreeing with the majority (comforting) and voting against it is disagreeing with the majority (less comforting.)

The YES campaign seems to be losing even more support. I think a Scotland free to govern itself in the absence of Tory voters would be a great thing, so its a shame independence just isn't going to happen.
