Republicans posted:What interests me most about Windows 8 tablets is the prospect of them being as functional as a notebook with a full OS whereas the iPad is pretty much just a big iPod Touch. I've been wanting something like this for my job for a while now, and while my HP 3105m has served me very well the notion of being able to easily walk around the kitchen with a tablet and stylus making out the day's prep or order list and being able to write notes on them before printing them out is super sexy. Can you explain what you mean by a `full OS`. Every use case you wrote can be done with a big iPod Touch.

mod sassinator posted:Instead of all the kickstands, keyboard covers, and doodads why can't any tablet manufacturer make a legitimately better tablet? I'd put up with 1366 and half the battery life if it was as light as a Kindle. Apple is the only company willing to invest in their supply chain, so they get all the best parts. Every other manufacturer is in a race to the bottom using whatever parts they can get cheapest. Once Apple has started a trend (like high DPI displays) it becomes very difficult for the other manufacturers to catch up, because Apple has already secured the supply of the necessary components. Companies don`t make better tablets because they can`t afford to, or they don`t want to make the significant upfront purchases that are necessary.

Launching "competitive" with existing priceS doesnt make people reevaluate their pricing. Using a worse screen than existing tablets doesnt push the market forward. There is no niche for this thing. The ARM version doesnt have an app ecosystem. The intel version is thick, heavy, and will probably be very expensive. The screen is worse than an ipad, and the keyboard is worse than an ultrabook. It is the homercar of devices, it tries to do everything, but the only things that stand out are the gimmicks.

The ipad keyboard is usually at a proper angle as well. Typing on a flat surface, especially such a thin one, is really terrible. There's a reason that keyboards are angled or raised.

The RT version has a netbook screen and netbook like specs. It is the blazing power of a netbook with the awkward form factor of a transformer. You can buy ultra thin and light laptops that last through the entire day already. You can even install Windows 7 on them. You can buy tablets with better screens, and you can use styluses, mice, and keyboards with them.

Not only is the SDK out, there are dev devices available for whatever Windows On ARM is called this month. Microsoft is still pretty nice to major developers.

If it happens at that price I'll poop on my ipad and post the video here. Microsoft will never release it at that price.

I'd also add the caveat that $200 is the standalone price, they might subsidize it with a forced subscription to Office 2013.
