please listen to this composition by Loden Taylor while you read.

“Come,” my mother told me. We sat by the cage with the tame cardinals in the great hall. “Tell me who is King.”
It was a test. “Libash Uzoldogik” I told her. She knew I would answer it right.
“And whom does the king rule?” she asked.
“The dwarves of The Rare Ship.”
“Aye,” she said. “And what is Akrelzuglar?”
She had not asked me exactly that before. “It is the name of the dwarves?”
My mother smiled in the way that meant I was not wrong but also not right.
“Akrelzuglar which means 'The Rare Ship' is the name for our civilization, beardling. It is all the Mountain Halls and all that live within them...”

I knew the mountainhomes of The Rare Ship. “There are thirty-five,” I offered.
“...Yes, but it is more. The Rare Ship is an idea. It means... it means 'us'. Not just the stone we cut or the halls we eat in. And there are more than Dwarves in The Rare Ship.”
My mother nodded at the bright red cardinals in their copper cage, and I understood.

***

In 200 Libash Uzoldogik, who had reigned as King of The Rare Ship for 137 years, died and his second daughter Bim Inethdeduk became Queen in Paintfamous. I was 51 years old but I had never seen the King and I desired that I would see the new Queen. Therefore in the late spring of 201 I went to Paintfamous.

The great dining hall at Paintfamous bears the artifact mural Gostangoddom that gives that Mountain Hall its name. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. On the painting is the image of The Rare Ship and its surrounding neighbors and lands. I viewed this work and was ecstatic to have seen it. I am not a skilled artist but I endeavored to copy the painting.

There are 35 mountain halls of The Rare Ship, but I marked the names only of the most important which were marked on Gostanggoddom. Paintfamous which is the capital. Friendlyshoots which was founded in the First Year. Pagetin, where Queen Bim Inethdeduk married Lorbam Orburn and became a brewer in 73, until Lorbam died in 87, whereafter she wandered The Rare Ship for many years, much as I have done. Planksavior, Shottome, Ripewhips. The centers of travel and trade. I desired to label every mountain hall but with every name there would not be room for the map on my small paper.

I have kept my map ever since and attach it here. It now has also lines I drew many years later, that show how trade caravans go between fortresses not only of The Rare Ship but also the other dwarves, the humans, the elves in their forests and even the dark fortresses although I never met a trader who confessed to trading with goblins.

Queen Bim Inethdeduk later that day came to the great hall and there issued an edict prohibiting the export of tin items. Thereafter the General came and we who were only civilians were ushered out. We went without grumbling knowing their council concerned war.

In the late fall of 234 I was content to end a romance with Asob Paddledled and traveled to Shipshook. I inquired in Shipshook as to the need for a dwarf with my organizational skills but found no such work and instead spent that winter crafting unremarkable stone jugs and also daily cleaning the fishery. It was at Shipshook in the spring of 235 that I met a dwarf who called herself an “agent” of the Queen, Zulban Uzolbesmar (whose reign began in 225). She instructed me not to use her true name and instead to adopt a false name on her behalf which she called “Sankis.” Likewise she named me “Leperfish” which is a joke about the smell in my clothing on that day we first discussed Ritholducim, 'The Noble Work.'

“Henceforth,” she told me, “if you will serve – which I have not yet decided for certain – but if you will serve, then you and all whom aid you must use an alias so as to confuse the Enemy.” I thought at that time that the enemy would not be confused (and did not care about our names) but I did not yet truly understand.

Sankis asked me if I had traveled and I told her I had, for I have visited ten of the mountain halls of The Rare Ship. “I aspire to visit them all eventually,” I told her, and she raised her brows at me and asked “All?” by which I understood she referred obliquely to Ripewhips. “It is still one of the thirty-five, although it may be the last that I attempt” I told her. Sankis is very quick of mind and so she favored me with a dark smile, knowing both meanings of my words.

“Ripewhips is much spoken-of within the royal chambers in Paintfamous, Leperfish. You may imagine that the Queen regards it the hardest stone to mine?” I nodded and made to answer but she was not done. “You would be wrong, dwarf. Ripewhips is but a victim of the syndrome. The Queen means to cleave the beast which spreads it. Until that is done, to cure one victim of the syndrome solves little, for in time another will fall ill, and then another.”

***

We spoke a little more that day and for several weeks I considered what Sankis had told me. Also I considered why she had told me – specifically me, and not some other dwarf. When we next met in the early summer of 234 Sankis was wearing a dusty traveling-cloak when she found me asleep in my bunk in the dormitory of lozenges at Shipshook. I realized she had likely been all the way to Paintfamous and back in the meantime. We provisioned ourselves with stew and Dwarven Rum from the stockpile and spoke at a table in the great hall, where no other dwarf ate or partied at that hour.

“Ripewhips is overrun and there is little point in attempting to cleanse it,” I began, while Sankis quaffed. “In Shottome I saw almost as many goblins as there were elves, although there are at least six times as many dwarves there.” Sankis nodded and gestured with her drink that I should continue. “I have also heard that at Planksavior there are almost as many goblins as dwarves, and Planksavior is far smaller and more difficult to encircle or defend than Ripewhips.

“And there are also a small number at Pagetin,” Sankis interjected, “and – do not speak of this, Leperfish – there are even now thirty goblins living within the walls of Paintfamous itself.”

I was quiet for a while and we both ate and drank.

“There is a dwarf here with some medical skill,” I said to break the silence, and Sankis raised her brow as is her way. “I asked him about syndromes. He claimed that he has read of an outpost which was attacked in deep mines by an ancient creature. The miners who were not instantly slain by the beast were carried up to hospital beds but any who treated them or were even touched by them fell quickly ill, and within hours blood ran from their eyes and noses and ears and soon they died.”

“What did your doctor say of treatment?”

“There was no treatment for those who became ill but there was a flooded branch in the upper mines beyond which many dwarves sought refuge. None who swam the water became sick, even if they had previously touched an ill dwarf who had escaped the deep mines. By this the doctor said he thought the ancient terror in the deep had spread a deadly dust which was washed from clothing by the water.”

Sankis tilted her head. “And what of the beast?”

“I suppose it still lives,” I told her. “One of those who fled had a pick and the survivors carved a new shaft to reach the surface. They filled the shaft with stone behind them and built also a wall at the main entrance.”

“So,” Sankis nodded, leaning back in her seat, “the outpost was lost. All within who did not wash themselves of the filth were likewise lost. And the mines cannot be recovered while the beast within yet lives, for fear of the plague it carries. Is that it?”

I think I then understood the metaphor which Sankis had used months past.

***

In the late fall of 235 Sankis again sought me at Shipshook and instructed that I should seek from among those at Shipshook a few sturdy and trustworthy dwarves. She gave me also a goat-leather bag containing finely cut clear tourmalines and instructed that I should outfit a wagon with provisions, victuals and supplies, and buy two draft animals. Sankis spoke directions to me (but would not write them) and empowered me to act on behalf of the Queen in the establishment of a new outpost for The Rare Ship.

I was afraid but Sankis expressed that The Rare Ship did not have time to console me, by which she meant that the Queen could not afford patience for cowardice. Therefore I sought out such dwarves as seemed likely and described our purpose in the manner Sankis had instructed me, which is a subterfuge by saying only a small part of the truth as if it is the whole truth, but it is not a lie. I hoped to gather at least twenty dwarves including at least ten skilled at arms, but after two weeks the day had come to depart and I had only six besides myself willing to gamble their lives for our venture once they knew the direction of our travel.

However I had afforded insufficient victuals for twenty with the tourmalines, so perhaps to have so few was not tragedy.

***

In early winter of 235 we seven dwarves became The Noble Work and departed Shipshook. We met a trade caravan and despite the snow on the roads our wagons arrived in good order at Whiskergild by mid-winter. Whiskergild is situated at the foot of the northern border of the mountains called The Entangled Horn, entirely within which the mountain halls of The Rare Ship are carved, as well as every other dwarven home known to me. The dwarves who dwell at Whiskergild are members of The Cloisters of Exalting and they revere strange gods and wear clothing of an unusual cut and speak the language with incorrect sounds.

A half-day's walk from Whiskergild to the northwest is Youthmachine, which is of a similar size and population to Whiskergild. It is founded astride the confluence of two brooks into the stream called The Lice of Deteriorating which emerges from its northern walls where also the familiar mountains give way to the northwest a grassland and to the northeast a rocky wasteland. The grassland is hilly which is like very small rounded mountains and the name of that is The Hill of Rewarding although there are many many hills. A dwarf in Youthmachine recounted that long ago, prospectors found deposits of silver in outcrops on a particular hill which they named The Hill of Rewarding, after which they returned to The Cloisters of Exalting. Thereafter when asked the whereabouts of their claim the prospectors pointed to the north and said “The Hill of Rewarding” by which many dwarves, not familiar with the word 'hill,' thought was the name of the entire grassland. Thereafter when maps were made the grassland was called 'The Hill of Rewarding.'

'Bad Munki' Whippedbite said that this was probably a lie and that we could not trust the word of dwarves from The Cloisters of Exalting who do not even know how to say words correctly.

The rocky wasteland is called The Dune of Suns and by that name and also its forbidding aspect we intended to avoid it. Therefore we followed the stream north finding some difficulty with the snow but here the water was frozen and so we pulled the wagon upon the ice where we could and made good time.

The ground descended and after several days we saw the rocky wasteland give way to the east and I knew by the instructions Sankis gave to turn also east. Thus we crossed into a climate of hilly grasslands with sparse trees which is called 'savanna.' Savanna is a human word like 'hill' and 'grassland' so for a few days we made a game of guessing exactly what the word meant.

'Scamtank' Sabrestraps convinced that humans lacking any poetry use words which are only sounds and do not mean anything else than what they label. So 'savanna' only means a grasslands with sparse trees and has no meaning like 'bodicecloisters' or 'paperhame' like a dwarf word. Although I agreed scamtank is correct he ended our game with the miasma from a spoiled meal and therefore was charged with inventing the next game.

***

In late winter of 235 although it is definitely still winter we traveled more days to the east and found places where there was no snow on the ground and springs ran with unfrozen water. The sodden ground from rainfall muddied the wagon and for a full day we were stuck while 'Vox Nihili' Trustedshoots cut wood and then 'Nettle Soup' Thinpaddles made a new axle. Scamtank made the game 'do not let the cats abscond' which involved catching the cats in the tall grass several times which scamtank and Bad Munki enjoyed but I did not.

Two days later 'Internet Kraken' Helmsarches conspired with Bad Munki to suggest that our endeavor was likely to fail after our wagon again suffered damage. Bad Munki conveyed this news while Internet Kraken pretended surprise and that they had not previously discussed their worries for hours the prior evening. After directing repairs I considered and consulted with Nettle Soup who sat very still for a few minutes before giving advice that although she was content to follow the plan with confidence in my leadership, our mission was still shrouded in mystery and therefore discouraging to those who lacked trust.

I decided she was correct and made to reveal a measure of our true purpose as a way to bring encouragement.

As we worked near the wagon I made announcement. “As you know, we traveled to the west to Whiskerguild and Youthmachine, and then north, and then turned east, which is not a direct route to our intended site,” I began, and my six companions of The Noble Work listened. “We have taken this roundabout path to avoid a corrupted and evil region known as The Fields of Vice. That land is tainted and sinister; a savanna much like this, but haunted by unnatural creatures and swept with bad air that brings sicknesses and filth. Yet, there is a place that has been described to me where the geography is favorable – a site worth prospecting for mineral wealth. Therefore we circumnavigate the forbidden land and stay clear of the evil creatures that haunt them, but if we are resolute, we should come to that site in good time and there make for ourselves substantial fortune.”

This encouragement seemed to be of help and when the dislocated wheel was reattached both Internet Kraken and Bad Munki behaved reassured. They walked beside the wagon cheerfully exchanging military trivia and discussing 'hit locations' which is combat jargon. When I wondered about their conversation aloud 'Markus_cz' Bronzetunnels (who is the doctor I earlier mentioned in converse with Sankis) explained that Internet Kraken and Bad Munki conversed the skills which are the counterparts to his own: while the ranger and the warrior have the knowledge of disablement and wounding, the doctor has the knowledge of surgery and healing. Therefore a hit location is a place of the body where a wound may be severest.

Later I suggested to Bad Munki that he ought to armor his hit locations before battle and he was surprised and agreed but I think in the way that a parent agrees with a child who suggests it is cold and therefore one should wear socks. I did not say so but I considered that in the future I must give Bad Munki military direction without childish innocence of warrior jargon. I do not have a reference so I will study the conversations of Bad Munki and Internet Kraken to improve proficiency.

We traveled east and the hills north and south obscured any possible view of dark fortresses. The plants and grasses were healthy and there was no miasma so I was relieved we had followed the correct course. Sankis informed me of the narrowness of the safe way here and although it was a risk that I did not share the danger with my companions, I felt finally justified because there was no need.

Vox Nihili volunteered to teach a song concerning travel, nostalgia, and improbable water animals with floppy noses. After several rehearsals our songcraft was of mixed quality. Markus_cz and Vox Nihili sang harmony well and I received compliments for my clear voice. Internet Kraken misremembered the words and then sang as quietly as possible. I worried that goblins have good ears but the tall grass among the hills perhaps absorbs the sounds and I was loathe to quash morale with requests for silence.

Provisions dwindled and Internet Kraken requested to hunt but I asked that bolts be preserved. I counted days and leagues and rations and mouths and found no great cause for worry yet.

***

On the last day of 235 I looked south and saw three distant peaks of The Entangled Horn, side by side with snow atop and of a similar height. We turned north along a gully descending a small hill and I saw ahead the bend of a brook lined on both banks by twisted purple trees. There was a haze to the north. I ordered halt to the wagon as the sun set and when the sun rose it was 1 Granite 236, the first day of spring.

“We have arrived” I informed six other dwarves of The Noble Work.

“Really?” asked scamtank, glancing towards the unwholesome brook.

“Aye, scamtank. We are right on the edge of The Fields of Vice. Stay away from that stream, take water only from the pools closer to this hill. Unburden the horses, pasture them and the dogs as well. Find the picks. This is where we will found a new outpost for The Rare Ship. We will delve for metal and for gemstone, make space for kitchens and storerooms, cut the rock and smooth it and thereupon carve our names. We will cut the trees and brew the plants and drink to our health in a grand hall.”

It was a momentous occasion and I had all of their attention.

A dwarf cannot mistake a moment of history being made. I beheld their faces and saw in their eyes commitment to this singular revelation of dwarfhood. Can there be any greater privilege in life, than to be a part of such an event? I felt the presence of Etest, god of fortresses, metals, and war. Igest Nestethkurol inspired my words. All the true gods heard me in that moment, and I aspired to make my words worthy.

“In the annals of our people, it will forevermore be written that in the Early Spring of 236, in The Hill of Rewarding, Ritholducim founded for the glory of all Akrelzuglar the fortress Kilrudzat: Bronzestabbed. Strike the earth!”

Welcome to Let's Play Dwarf Fortress 2012: Bronzestabbed!

First things first.

DWARF ME???
:frogsiren:Please do not post “dwarf me” posts!:frogsiren:
To get on the Dwarfing List, you need to go here: Bronzestabbed Dwarfing List and fill out the form. The form adds you to the dwarfing list spreadsheet, which is here. Please don't just add yourself directly to the spreadsheet: using the form makes sure that when the sheet is very busy, nobody overwrites each other or accidentally deletes anything.

So what is dwarf fortress?
Dwarf fortress is a roguelike sandbox fantasy sim game in which you direct a bunch of dwarves in building and defending a fortress. To read more, see the thread in Games, here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3466523

Haven't there been a ton of LPs of this?
Yes. But the game is under constant development, and this will be the first succession LP of the “2012” version of the game, which has a bunch of new stuff. Also these LPs are hugely popular so why not do more?

So this is a succession LP?
Yes. A series of goons will take turns playing the game before handing off the save to the next one to take over. This generally leads to fun. We're going to use a slightly different method for picking the next overseer in line this time though – the intent is to speed up turns, make handoffs go smoothly, and not keep people waiting for ages for the next update.

It looks weird. This isn't the Dwarf Fortress I'm used to...
We are using the “Phoebus” graphic set this time around. While I don't love graphic sets in general and don't love Phoebus in particular, it's the most popular choice. I held a poll in the Games thread and an overwhelming majority preferred to use a tile set for visual accessibility to non-players and neophytes, and of the tile sets, Phoebus was the one the majority preferred.

I still see letters sometimes...
Yeah, Phoebus comes with quite a lot of sprites for various creatures, but it's not totally comprehensive. Sometimes an animal will still be represented by a letter. Don't panic, it's OK. You may also see some animal sprites being re-used. Just relax and let it happen, man, it's OK.

OK HERE ARE THE RULES
As I said above, do not post Dwarf Me posts. If you would like an in-game dwarf named after you, you need to fill out the form here. Please only fill it out once and please don't make joke entries. It just adds work for me to maintain the list.

If you want to take a turn as Overseer, there's no form to fill out or post to make. Just stick around and stay up to date with the game. At the end of each turn, I will post asking for volunteers and you can volunteer at that time. I'll give a 24-hour period for responses and then I will randomly pick one volunteer using a random method of randomness. Whoever “wins” will play the next turn. You should only volunteer if you're ready and able to take a turn right away, post updates at least once every 48 hours, and complete your turn within a reasonable amount of time. If you are going on vacation, have finals coming up, are doing another LP, or having computer problems? Don't volunteer. You can always get a shot after the next guy finishes.

Please feel free to post fan contributions: art, journal entries, music, poetry, whatever. A few people complain about having too much of this stuff but they are not fun-havers. I will post links to all the updates here in the first posts anyway, so those people can skip all the commentary if they want to. For the rest of us, contributions are a big part of the fun of these LPs and I don't want anyone to hold back because of a small number of whiners.
You can use this image at the top of your fan entries to help them stand out:

Finally, feel free to post a small amount of constructive criticism if an Overseer is clearly struggling. I'm providing a lot of hands-on guidance myself behind the scenes, so hopefully that won't happen. I do not want a lengthy piling-on if someone's having problems, though, so keep it to just one or two small posts. If you have a big problem with what's happening, you should PM or email me directly rather than filling up the thread.

Links!

The dwarfing list form you fill out to get dwarfed is here: Bronzestabbed Dwarfing List
The dwarfing list spreadsheet can be viewed here: spreadsheet

Spoiler alert! Only overseers should go to the following link, to avoid potential spoilers. If you go there anyway, do not post what you see in the thread please.
Overseers: your info is here: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/bronzestabbed

The font is called “evanescent” and I found it here: http://www.dafont.com/evanescence.font
The base image if you want to use it is here:

I posted a mapping of cities of The Rare Ship to their parent groups, which is useful for figuring out where your dwarf is from (see the dwarf's thoughts screenshot).

There's a spreadsheet that maps dwarfed dwarfs to links of their thoughts, skills, and relationships screenshots, here. Thanks Magrov for building and maintaining this!

Oh well, maybe next time!

That would have been a pretty good idea! Maybe. But on the other hand, Overseers have a hard enough time spelling people's names anyway, asking them to invent consistent shortened-versions might be too much. Especially for those 30-person migration waves.

If you find the goon names disconcerting, though, just remember: it was Sankis' idea. :ssh:

I've been really looking forward for to thread. Would you believe it's been almost two years since Gemclod started? I have high hopes for this LP. The Prologue is brilliant, Leperfish, I love your writing style. I'd say you've managed to set a dwarfy mood quite well, you've provided some background while keeping it simple and avoiding convoluted plots. Although there is the thing with Sankis... hmm...

Anyway, thanks for all your work!

By the way, I'd love to see screenshots of our gods, unless that's something you're saving for a later update.

EDIT: Oh and wow, my dwarf seems pretty emotionless. Except getting pissed all the time.

Maybe I should explain why I picked specific people for the first six? I started by grabbing the names of Goons who contributed to the mods: so that's you, Vox, scamtank, and (although I wound up not using his critters, I still learned from his stuff) internet kraken. Then I added bad munki because he is doing a great job of running the DF thread in Games. And then I added the top two posters in the Games thread who weren't already accounted for, and that's that!

Also it worked out really well because I think I got genders matched to goons (don't know for sure of course). I just happened to pull six maledwarfs and one femaledwarf so it kind of felt like serendipity.

Pantheon details will be forthcoming very soon.

Also adding this to the third post. This guy is hilarious.

Maelin posted:

I'm also insanely curious about what's behind the secret mysterious overseers-only link

It is not as exciting as you think. Also it's not complete yet since it's not needed until the first handover. But mostly it will contain some helpful documentation for Overseers, some notes on stuff pulled from Legends mode, and possibly notes between Overseers on characterization, loose ends, plots, and stuff like that.

At this moment there's not really anything spoilery yet. Oh, and by the way, it's just an Obsidian Portal "campaign" site, which might not wind up being the best format but it has a free wiki and it has access control and that's the two things I wanted.

Assuming that Leperflesh hasn't monkeyed around with migration sizes and birth rates, you could easily be in by year 3 or 4. The downside of this is that there's probably a 50% chance that you'll be a child or a baby.

e: I just had an ~idea~ but it's a bit against tradition: no gooning dwarves under the age of 9, except for express wish. Maybe say that it's a rite of passage in Bronzestabbed to get a dumb nickname when you're on the cusp of adulthood or something, I don't know.

As far as I know it's not actually possible to affect migration rates with a mod. Well, you can put a cap on migration, but not on rate. Obviously we're happy to get 300+ dwarves for the meat grinder fun but I can't control how fast they come.

I have adjusted the birth caps, which prevent pregnancies within the fortress once they're reached, but these don't affect migrations so you cannot actually prevent the fortress from filling up with children.

I thought about not gooning the kids but there are two problems with this: 1) keeping track of the ages of the ones at the border and then nicknaming them when they get old enough would be a hassle, and 2) it would reduce the number of names on the dwarfing list that actually get used.

I suspect people would rather be a baby than not get to be anything at all.

Anyway I'm now back to work, but I'm pretty sure next update won't be till tomorrow.

Good morning everyone! We're up to 264 dwarfs on the list which is honestly more than I expected in the first ~18 hours ish. And I am sorry to those of you who live in strange foreign lands - I did my best to telegraph when I was going to put the LP up by posting in the DF thread in Games, but I do realize many of you don't keep up with that thread.

There's obviously no guarantees but in Gemclod we got up to around 350 named dwarfs or so before everyone died, so that's certainly possible here.

Chapter 1

1 Granite 236

All of us were eager to delve but first I put order to the disposition of our provisions and supplies and the livestock.

There is the matter of the horses. I had preferred to bring a mare or two for milk but there were few horses buyable at Shipshook and so I have two geldings. There will be no horse milk cheese but having done their duty with the wagon they will provide meat and skins. I ordered them pastured near the wagon for now until butchery and tannery are ready for their sacrifice.

I was able to procure a turkey hen which will provide eggs once we have a nestbox. It is restrained beside the wagon which I order broken down.

There are pairs of dogs and cats. The cats will roam and do not tolerate restraint despite games otherwise, but the bitch will guard our wagon while dwarves work. The male dog has training for hunting according to Internet Kraken although I do not know what such training entails. Internet Kraken is not permitted yet to hunt because the supply of metal bolts is for protection and war. However I assigned the hunting dog to his care so that the two will bond.

Internet Kraken was pleased and named the dog Urist Kubukuthir. Urist is the most common dwarf name and not a good name for a dog but I will not discourage Internet Kraken over his poor creativity.

Before beginning work I made assignments of administration. I am Expedition Leader which should be obvious but Nettle Soup was somehow surprised at this which is strange but I was too busy to think about it. Bad Munki I made Militia Commander although he is for now the only member of the Militia and must content to command himself.

I made myself also Manager which entails the conception and adminstration of work orders and materials and finished goods. None grumbled for this. Markus_cz I made Chief Medical Dwarf which also was obvious. Nettle Soup I designated Broker which news caused her to smile which is rare for Nettle Soup. I am also Bookkeeper which every dwarf did not want to be therefore it falls to me.

The earth is loam and silt loam and sand. But there are pebbles and cobbles and boulders of limestone as well which is a good sign for prospecting. None of us is skilled with the pick but soil is the easiest to delve. Therefore I took a pick and gave one to Nettle Soup. Vox Nihili will cut wood. Internet Kraken will build a butchery and a tannery that Vox Nihili will design, and scamtank will gather local plants for there are abundant bushes with fruit even in early spring.

Bad Munki will arm himself and protect all. There is no facility yet for training but I advised him to make whatever provision of defense he deems wisest and he informed that he would establish a patrol. Bad Munki also informed he will lead the squadron 'The Stormy Lancers' which is a good military name but I do not understand how one dwarf can be a squad.
“It is so that the Administrator can assign equipment and barracks of course,” he told me, and I admitted that of the military records that I had seen in the past all were arranged thusly although squads always contained more dwarfs. “I assign the copper helm and an axe to The Stormy Lancers” I told him, and marked it on paper, and he was satisfied.

Markus_cz is our Chief Medical Dwarf but there are no injuries or illnesses and every dwarf must labor. Therefore Markus_cz must haul. I informed that my most recent job prior to The Noble Work was cleaning the fishery but Markus_cz was not needful of encouragement.

Having given orders I selected a likely embankment and endeavored to dig.

3rd Granite
On his patrols Bad Munki has spotted wildlife. Internet Kraken and scamtank assist with identification. There is a kestrel and a weasel (which must be kept from the turkey) and there are fish seen in the brook although I forbade close approach of the brook. Vox Nihili tells that where fish live Lorsith watches. Vox is a faithful worshipper of Lorsith but he must not worship at the brook.

Local critters:

Silt loam is soft but my hands are soft also and they blister. Yet this simple labor is pleasing.

6th Granite
We carved into the bank two small rooms and hallways and found only soil. Therefore we cut deeper and made to spiral downward until stone is found. Stone will give security and also mineral wealth.

A butchery and tannery are finished just outside the mine entrance.

Prickle berries and wild strawberries were gathered in small quantity. I ordered stockpiles of food and finished goods indoors.

Deeper digging finds silt loam and loam gives way to sand gives way to sandy clay loam.

8th Granite
Beneath sandy clay loam Nettle Soup and I strike limestone. It is expected given the limestone at the surface but expectation fulfilled is a great satisfaction. Before delving deeper we will attempt to cut blocks for doors and workshops and implements.

In the meantime more space is needed near the tunnel entrance for storage to get things indoors before foul weather spoils or enemy thieves. I sent Nettle Soup above to cut more loam.

16th Granite

A larger space is finished and I ordered all items brought indoors save wood which I desired stockpiled outside the entrance. Animals are re-pastured likewise outside the entrance but without view of the butchery which would be cruel.

Nettle Soup joins me below where we mostly break stone into useless small chunks but have succeeded at two limestone rocks sufficient for construction.

I ordered more room above for workshops: for masonry and carpentry.

The kestrel soars over the tainted land across the brook. Bad Munki jokes perhaps it hunts ghosts but it is not funny.

17th Granite

Cutting north through limestone she struck sand but lacking any order to stop Nettle Soup dug further. It was joyful accident because she struck malachite!

23rd Granite
All cease labors for drink and food. I took opportunity to speak to the six during relaxation at the food stockpile and reflected that this was not dissimilar to my first meeting with Sankis although the facilities were much cruder.

“Today we have found an ore of copper below,” I began, and this news prompted a toast and quaffing. “I need not elaborate the importance,” I continued, “for you all know without supply of metal Bronzestabbed could not endure long.” Dwarves nodded. “There is found here wood and berries and fish and likely game. There is stone and metal. Bronzestabbed has future. Therefore the time has come that I divulge facts which were not explained although with patience you will learn why,” I said, but my desire to speak quickly and thus preempt questioning of withheld knowledge was unfulfilled.

“Is it about goblins?” asked Vox Nihili and I was taken aback.

“Aye, it is, in part, but... how did you know?” I queried. The other dwarves had ceased their chewing and regarded each other and me with faces that admitted mutual prior discussion without my knowing.

“There's dark fortresses out here” scamtank responded. “We passed between two in the late winter. You didn't say anything so we knew you didn't want to talk about it. Found out about them back in Youthmachine. You know. From the foreigners.”

Bad Munki and Internet Kraken nodded to each other and although I was exposed as lacking candidness no dwarf accused.

“Nettle Soup urged trust and patience,” added Vox, and I was thankful to her in my heart for unearned loyalty.

“Well. Yes. We are nearer to dark fortresses than any dwarf should feel comfortable, Tithleth knows. But this is where we have come, and therefore, if the goblins discover us...”

“When they discover us,” interrupted Bad Munki, and I was forced to agree.

“Aye, Bad Munki. In all likelihood goblins will scout us eventually. And when they do, it is our duty to repel them from our threshold, with Etest's favor.” It was not by accident I invoked religion for Gods desire that dwarves be steadfast.

“Why?” asked Markus_cz, quietly. Although he leaned against a barrel in apparent repose it was the question I did not wish to wrestle yet. But I would not lie to them.

“Because the Queen commands it,” I told The Noble Work.

For the first time the six of them recognized the true meaning of our group's name.

1st Slate (mid-spring)
We dug the chamber for the new workshops. While on the top level I noticed dwarves using a hole from the stockpile room to enter and exit. It was my fault because I designated mining which Nettle Soup faithfully followed which made the hole. A limestone block was wedged to fill the gap and no dwarf criticized but I know all saw my error. I must endeavor to do better.

Nettle Soup discussed that at a craftdwarfshop a nest box can be made for the turkey into which she will lay for us eggs. I desired to carve malachite but before smelting must come basic facilities. Therefore I designated more room for workshops and storage. A kitchen for roasts and a brewery must be next as well for raw horse is savage and booze will not last through autumn even with restraint in guzzling.

9th slate
A masonry is prepared. The still and kitchen await construction and there is more room for food storage. I ordered the slaughter of horses. Bad Munki should have armor and the meat stored indoors will not spoil.

I have not kept track of paperwork. During travel I stored records in the wagon but now there is no place. Bad Munki has not complained but I desire that he should have his barracks soon as well for he patrols endlessly in circles. Internet Kraken has no job and therefore as soon as the craftsworks is made I will order wooden bolts. With wooden bolts I will allow hunting. When there is time a fishery may be built although I will restrict Internet Kraken to the nearby pools and not the evil brook along which grow the purple trees. Scamtank called them Glumpwrongs which Vox Nihili agrees (he being the woodcutter must know of wood). I will not order cutting of glumpwrongs for no furniture should be a foul purple hue.

I have tried to restrict the width of items on the page to something reasonable without timg everything. If it's unreasonably wide for people please let me know and I'll adjust. In the above update the gods table is the widest thing but I couldn't get it to be smaller without making it really messy.

Bad Munki posted:

Based on the screenshots in the OP, I put this together.

Wagon is at normal color, down is darker, up is lighter. If I had higher-res screenshots, I would gladly do this again, or in the future as the fortress grows. Of course, this only works for above-ground features.

Although I bet I could use dfhack to do this automatically, unless there's already a similar tool out there...

This is great! Let me know what I should send you and I'll be happy to take screenshots.

I do also have Stonesense and it is working. But I hate it: it occludes things, is clunky to work with, and I can never really manage to get a good view of the fortress that doesn't make it look weird and mashed. Also the cartoonishness bugs me and there are some assets without graphics and some labels look weird.

I may still occasionally use Stonesense to give a sense of the fortress if it gets really confusing but mostly I'm going to avoid it. If future overseers want to though, it'll be included in the zip and they're free to use it.

I've updated the third post with fan art, journal entries, and started linking updates.

Ugath really is great. I've found maybe a quarter of dwarven civs in the current version have a dark god among the pantheon. This particular pantheon was one reason why I kept the init strings the same when I was forced to regenerate the world a couple of times: I really liked that there's plenty of gods, some important and some not so much; and of course, Leperfish worships Igest which is completely appropriate.

Boing posted:

I really like how you take niggly game mechanics and turn them into flavour, where it's dwarves being stubborn or traditional or whatever.

Thanks. My personal tendency is towards literalism and anal-retentiveness and detail, and so I tend to reflexively try to incorporate everything in the game. Glossing over something is hard for me: ignoring it (even for good reason) is really hard. So I try to channel those failings into something creative and, periodically, make myself let some things go or I'll never finish.

Dwarves definitely use paper. Small tools and incidental items aren't modeled in DF, but we know they're there. In my case, my dwarf has a portable journal which includes a map - even clay slabs would rapidly become unwieldy, much less stone.

If you like, though, you can imagine that Dwarven Paper is made of felted beard hair and sand cemented together with fungus extract.

My main hangup is I won't tolerate hunks of grass in the middle of my text wherever a comma or period is supposed to be. So, I think the way to fix it is to tell DF itself to use uniform ground instead. Which looks like this:

No. Honestly I spent like a week thinking "hell yeah land of the lost dwarf fortress" but ultimately I decided that it would have been a lot of effort (because the only dino packs I can find online kind of suck and include stupid things or are incomplete) for not really that much payoff (you can be eaten by a dino instead of a jabberer but ultimately it's the same thing).

This LP is going to mostly be about the new stuff in the game. I think there's definitely room for a dinosaur DF LP but I suspect that one would wind up mostly being about dinosaurs.

I would not be happy with simply adding some dinosaurs to the game. I am... I don't know how to explain it exactly. I guess you could say I'm a completionist. If I added dinosaurs it would need to be a total conversion to a Mesozoic ecology. No flowering plants, warmer wetter climate, and so on.

I realize that's very stupid in a game where there's underground agriculture, dragons, eyeball grass, and zombies; but it's how it is. Someone else should do a dinosaur version and I'll enjoy it a lot and not be a roadblock to ever getting anything finished ever.

Bad Munki posted:

From my point of view, a lot more time is spent looking at the map than reading text, so the value of a good-looking map far outweighs the value of non-grassy text. And the default phoebus is pretty mild for those tiles, it doesn't take long to not even see them anymore.

I understand and recognize that this is likely the majority view. But please understand that simply using a graphics set at all represents a huge compromise of my personal preferences which I have made to try to please the majority. But I can't tolerate hosed up text it makes me angry.

Once my turn is over, later Overseers are free and welcome to play with the phoebus configurator and ruin all the periods and commas and whatnot to their hearts' content. I won't even complain about it. For now, we need real commas, sorry.

We won't have dinosaurs but that was definitely something I'd have done if we did. Because greek and latin don't exist in Dwarf Fortress and it's jarring to have a bunch of animals named with greek and latin names.

I do realize that a lot of animals have names derived from non-English sources of course but somehow it feels ok. It's the <everything>saur and <everythingelse>adon that throw me off.

DF 2012 has this whole training thing now. Like where you train stuff and your civ has things that are "familiar" which can be domesticated and if you train a thing to maximum trainedness then its offspring will be domesticatable.

Given that its a new feature I did not want to mess with what is trainable - better to show off the new feature as it works in the base game (this time).

Someone who knows the feature better can explain better I'm sure.

Chapter 2

11th Slate 236, Mid-Spring

A horse was struck down and work began on butchery but today Bad Munki ran reporting an unwholesome murky cloud boils from the north. Its shadow passed overhead and high above, tendrils seething in darksome roils which lashed the air.

A thick wisp reached down and brushed the soil above and to the south of the mine entrance. It spun as a whirlwind and sucked bits of grass and dust up while Bad Munki observed from just above our earth-cut mine. Scamtank too ran out to view the dire weather. Vox was hauling below and Nettle Soup was cutting earth so neither witnessed.

12th Slate

The foul cloud lingered into night but in dawn the sky was clear. All are reminded that a tainted land adjoins this and caution must be practiced.

“What God sent that?” Nettle Soup asked, who reveres Igest as I do. “Ugath Muckcrypts,” claimed Bad Munki, but Ugath should not have domain of storms against Igest the Silken Embrace, whose clouds bring clean rain and inspiration not filth tendrils. I was reminded of words from the dwarf Sankis regarding taint and thus sought Markus_cz.

“A deadly dust?” I asked him.
“It could be,” he confided, “although no flying beast was spotted to emit such. Yet who can say if one was high and obscured? Or perhaps some other source. But Leperfish it may only have been a storm-of-dust of ordinary fine silt powder.” Markus_cz is quick of brain and thus I was mollified and later repeated the idea to other dwarves.

13th Slate

A craftsdwarfshop is freshly built and thus I assigned labors.

There is none skilled at bone carving but I determined to attempt as bone is hard like rock and like rock may be cut with file and chisel. Horse bone may protect Bad Muki's hit locations if I do not ruin it.

Likewise a kitchen of limestone is situated and horsefat will simmer while biscuits cook.

Below more stone must be cut and I order mining of Malachite although we cannot yet smelt it. I desire to determine if a small deposit or a vein is there. Scamtank scoffs at copper but he may be glad of copper bolts when horsemeat runs out.

We will place stone doors in the entrance to seal out harmless dust storm powder.

20th Slate

Scamtank cooks and Bad Munki patrols and Nettle Soup and I mine stone. The fortress smells of baked horse.

The malachite ore is a vein through sand. Nettle Soup fell asleep in the sand while I tried to mine quietly. She is the carpenter so there are still no beds but she did not complain.

23rd Slate
Almost at the same time that we strike Cassiterite ore an alarm is raised. The dark cloud is returned. Across the brook bilegged animals spring through the brush chased by black tendrils. The dust billows along the ground unlike the high storm eleven days past.

It sweeps west and the swift animals sweep east and they seem escaped. The mass of dust falls into the brook and swirls in the water and I am again glad fishing is disallowed.

An eagle soars. Ngalak's consort sent to watch? Or to warn a dwarf should stay in mountains.

25th Slate
At last the vile storm settles and there is no evident harm done yet no dwarf is eager to inspect closely. Bad Munki's backpack is fashioned of Kangaroo which were the fleeing animals, who are known for pouches thus good backpacks.

No volunteer suggests to hunt them beyond the brook among the glumpwrongs.

Nettle Soup's carpentry is ready and I order beds but also wheelbarrows for hauling stone from the quarry is very heavy and slow for a thin dwarf of less brawn. In meantime I craft rock items.

Markus_cz reports hamster remains in the food stockpile and that hamsters are vile. The cats hunt them and offer remains to dwarves for approval but Markus lacking other jobs must haul refuse. With sympathy I inform pots will be cut for storage which will discourage hamster thieves.

27th Slate
I finished a nestbox for the turkey hen and ordered it built. We will have horse tallow and turkey egg biscuits.

1st Felsite
Nettle Soup has built a wheelbarrow which speeds stone supply to the workshops. I build doors and then armory furniture and then dining furniture.

6th Felsite
We are secure behind stone doors. No wind blows through tunnels and doors may be barred against foes and every dwarf feels security.

Scamtank labors diligently but his preparations are unusual. He impulsively mixes provisions from the wagon with horse parts for original recipes of his design. Scamtank informs I should make chairs for eating at tables of his biscuits and I agree although I order roasts for hope of superior meals than these.

I also mention Cassiterite. Dwarves hear and know from cassiterite is tin with which copper will make bronze. Scamtank scoffs at bronze as inferior to steel but it was cassiterite and malachite that Sankis hoped thus I called Bronzestabbed.

Wood burnt for charcoal would fire a smelter. Much more room is needed first. Internet Kraken chafes for fishing or hunting but our supply of food is plenty and thus I assign digging to Internet Kraken while administrator dwarfs make furniture.

11th Felsite
More fiendish murk. Again across the brook named, I now recall, Fadedmaggot. Another tall cloud with drooping twists that brush the ground at the stream's edge. It drifts slowly for an hour and then lifts its arms and scuds away northwestwards above the tainted savanna.

Dwarves do not even stop work. A terror becomes unterrifying when common and no harm is done but I concern that with familiarity travels contempt.

Meanwhile Internet Kraken learns to dig.

(Shown: kraken's hunting dog Urist, who is always with him)

16th Felsite
Having cooked every raw thing scamtank reports work stoppage in the kitchen. He has made stews of only horse which is better than scamtank biscuits but not greatly better. I cannot deny his skills at mincing have improved.

A table will be my office once I carve a chair for it.

17th Felsite

More murk. It is a black fog that crawls across the ground to the northeast beyond the stream.

19th Felsite

As before the grey mist lingers for a day and then dissipates. Still no dwarf has spotted a living thing within and animals avoid thus dwarves should avoid if dwarves are not stupider than animals.

20th Felsite

Another murk. It emerges from the northeast and thus may be the same murk from yester day returned rather than dissipated. Vox Nihili theories that it is always the same vile cloud that only moves beyond sight and then back. I cannot disprove of foul weather theories.

Nettle Soup and Internet Kraken carve rooms in the earth above the main floor for sleeping and barracks. Beds await placement within.

21st Felsite
The gloom has crossed the stream and to the edge of glumpwrongs but no further. It fades and will be gone by morning.

A kangaroo pair is identified on the hill not far from Bronzestabbed's doors.

An empty chamber will serve as dormitory. The other is barracks. I order furnishings placed.

My office is arranged and I order a door fitted. I seek my scattered documents and assemble stacks on a stone table. Soon we will have correct accounting of numbers of drinks and logs of wood.

23rd Felsite
I named the dormitory “The Noble Rest” to joke for the crude clay walls which are ignoble and also its purpose for The Noble Work but some dwarves do not understand that a word has two meanings opposite is a joke. No dwarf complains of beds however.

The barracks are beside and now Bad Munki will train and store weapons and have effectiveness as Militia Commander. Bad Munki claimed pleased. He named it Dirtpractices.

Nettle Soup makes wooden bolts.

There is room for workshops thus I ordered leatherworks and fishery. Internet Kraken may fish the pond just outside and above the entrance wherein pond turtles are spotted. We do not need more meat but shell is of use. More room is needed for metalworking.

1st Hematite 236
It is summer.

I embarked on a 3 x 5 oblong embark point (which is to say, three worldtiles wide and five tall, as oriented north up). The top three tiles are all Evil biome, through which the stream runs.

Now, Toady is pretty good at not just having the worldtiles attach in straight lines when you have a biome border. So instead it's a ragged edge.

That said, the first appearance was on the southeasternmost edge of the map, which in theory is not evil biome. So it would appear that there's at least some overlap or possibility of drifting into non-evil areas.

:) Thanks Markus.

I know I am verbose. There's going to be an update or two that are even more verbose but I hope I will be forgiven for it. I feel as though my year is Act 1 and establishing the setting. I will leave some basic open-ended stuff that future overseers can work with or not as they please, and (hopefully) not risk dropped plot threads that would be irritating.

Normally the first year of a fortress is pretty boring since you have to do certain things (get food production going, dig some space, build workshops) and you have extremely limited labor (no megaprojects). I wanted to try and have an interesting term so I'm doing what I'm doing but... importantly... I feel it's all based on the actual in-game world and not made-up stuff with no bearing.

Anyway. Math! Now actually correct math!

A Dwarf Tile is 2m square

An Embark Tile is 48 by 48 Dwarf Tiles, thus 96 meters square

a World Tile is 16 by 16 Embark Tiles, thus 1536 meters square

A Medium World is 128 x 128 Embark Tiles, thus 196608 meters square, or about 197 kilometers square

Thus it contains about 38.65 million square kilometers of room.

Bronzestabbed is 4 World Tiles from the edge of mountainous terrain and 7 from the mountain peaks.

So it is about 6.1km from the edge of the mountains and 10.8km from the nearest peaks.

Sooo, yeah I guess that image of the nearby mountains is actually really accurate. Also the "world" is really just a small slice of what an actual planet of reasonable size would have. Or even a continent of reasonable size.

From within fortress mode you can only look at details for the gods each dwarf worships. Use v(iew) or u(nits) and select a dwarf, view the details, and then look at their (r)elationships. You'll see the one or two gods they worship listed there: you can select a deity and hit (v)iew to see the details.

However, rather than doing that, I used Legends mode to export stuff and dug around to get names and things from there.

It's not like a danger room where it's ridiculously easy to build and completely game-breaking.

I think the real problem is that, if future overseers are like me, these suggestions only rule out options for the fortress. Because I'm sure not going to just do what someone describes. That would suck, it'd be like everyone is watching and going "Oh okay he's doing what that one guy said to do, good thing that one guy helped him out, I guess there's no suspense or tension or mystery though because we've established what this plan entails."

I'm stubbornly perverse that way though, so maybe future overseers will really go ahead and do what someone suggests.

For me, it saps a lot of the fun out of playing the game, if I have to just follow instructions for what to do.

Chapter 3

1st Hematite

Fiendish Murk. A whirlwind that touches down just southwest of the bend in the stream and then spreads.

2nd Hematite
The dire fog dissipates as ever.

5th Hematite
Internet Kraken is so eager to fish he has not built first the fishery. Pond turtles will rot.

7th Hematite
Nettle Soup has carved additional rooms ready for workshops. I order wood furnace, smelter, forge, and mechanic's workshop. Vox Nihili's talent wasted on hewing trees will not be wasted longer.

Bad Munki patrols. A Kangaroo is bold and bounds near permitted fishing holes.

16 Hematite
Forge and mechanic shop are complete. Still the fishery is not done. Internet Kraken is on break. I account no turtles in the food stockpile.

Complaints of no chairs and tables persist. No dwarven hall is true unless there is a dining hall for meeting and revelry even in dark times. An earthen dining hall is not tolerable therefore I order quarrying of limestone which will make a hall below.

21st Hematite
There is malachite in the great hall. The green stone on the floor running through the pale limestone will make good decoration.

23rd Hematite
Nettle Soup reports quarrying pyrite. Bad Munki reports startled while returning from patrol by surprise kangaroo in long grass but no harm visited on kangaroo.

Internet Kraken returns to pools for fishing still without building fishery. There are wooden bolts made by Nettle Soup but Internet Kraken will not be made ranger until a fishery is constructed.

24th Hematite
Internet Kraken reports caught turtle with pride. He reports turtle to scamtank and not myself to avoid scolding.

I designated armor, weaponry and ammunition stored within dirtpractices for more space in the main stockpile room for finished goods and furniture and food.

I build the smelter.

25th Hematite
Interlude

Once more the seven of The Noble Work gathered to discuss. Already I am exposed as secret-keeper and six dwarves gifted unearned trust. For more secrets, understanding was prerequisite, as when Sankis gave to me to understand for many weeks before she offered details and orders.

But Sankis also told that migrants would be sent. A trusted handful first to discover if we survived but then more and in the winter a trade caravan for supply and courier. Before new dwarves I must reward trust with trust. Therefore today I gathered The Noble Work (to assemble in the food stockpile room near the kitchen), to attempt creation of understanding.

Bad Munki stood at attention in copper helm and smelling of savanna. (I have not yet made his bone greaves but I will make them soon.) Internet Kraken and his Urist sat the packed earth floor the dog's tongue lolling. Nettle Soup took seat on bin nearest my left and Vox Nihili on pot nearest my right. Scamtank busied with noisome biscuits relishing horse parts best undescribed. Markus_cz took seat on seed barrel opposite me to stare quietly without smile but by his way it is not malice, only focused attentiveness a doctor always has.

“Have any of you ever been to Ripewhips?” I began and perhaps surprised. None spoke but Bad Munki spat and perhaps Vox Nihili mourned. “But you know about it,” I asked.

“Aye” said Bad Munki quickly and Vox and scamtank and Markus_cz nodded but two dwarfs professed not.

I endeavored to tell.

“Ethrambomrek, Ripewhips, is overrun. None will say it is not still a mountain hall of The Rare Ship, and still a caravan for trade will go once yearly. But there perhaps 250 dwarves survive while there are at least 1500 goblins dwelling openly and without restraint,” I told them, and Internet Kraken blew air sharply and Nettle Soup was very still.

“Why, that is... how did it happen? The goblins I mean, I never heard of no invasion” Internet Kraken blurted then, and Bad Munki wished to answer so I gestured that he should answer.

“Captives,” Bad Munki stated, and seeing confusion still elaborated, “the goblins were captives first. Like at Shottome. A war is done against goblins or goblins war against the mountain halls and some are taken caged.”

Fifteen hundred goblins were captured at Ripewhips?”

“Nay, not so many, no. Far fewer, but...”

I interrupted because I owned details.

“In 174 the Fellowship of Adventuring formed in The Mysterious Temple in Ripewhips” I recited, and six dwarves heard my tone and quieted. I recited History.

“In 174, the dwarf Bembul Lurepaged ruled from The Mysterious Temple of The Fellowship of Adventuring in Ripewhips.”

Nettle Soup closed her eyes. Internet Kraken leaned on his sprawled dog and Bad Munki took seat. No dwarf will interrupt a history.

“In 189, the dwarf Rith Plankshove began scouting the area around Ripewhips.
In 189 the dwarf Vabok Firstbanners became a ranger in Ripewhips.
In 189 the dwarf Stodir Lensbeasts became a fishery worker in Ripewhips.”

I said their names, a few dwarves some living but most dead. I did not endeavor to recite every dwarf but only to create the setting.

“In 189 the dwarf Kumil Pickmasters became a clerk in Ripewhips.
In 189, the goblin Urvad Colorsteels became a weaver in Ripewhips.”

Heads came up.

“In 189, the goblin Limul Figuredwelled became a soap maker in Ripewhips.”

I skipped more dwarves and years.

“In 195, the goblin Unib Faceglazes became a engraver in Ripewhips.
In 198, the goblin Kel Teachbolt became a farmer in Ripewhips.
In 199, the dwarf Tun Yellsmine became a farmer in Ripewhips.
In 201, the dwarf Kadol Stafftongue stopped being a fisherdwarf in Ripewhips.
In 203, the goblin Unib Faceglazes began scouting the area around Ripewhips.”

I skipped some more. There was not patience to recite all of Ripewhips history so I made selections to summarize. May the dwarves lost at Ripewhips forgive omission.

“In 207, The Manor of Dawn razed The Mysterious Temple in Ripewhips.
In 207, the goblin Tun Paintumbra became a farmer in Ripewhips.
In 207, the goblin Lorbam Cloistermanor became a shearer in Ripewhips.
In 208, the dwarf Dodok Fencedworth settled in Ripewhips.
In 208, The Manor of Dawn of The Rare Ship constructed The Cathedral of Gods in Ripewhips.
In 208, The Doctrine of Influences formed in The Cathedral of Gods in Ripewhips.
In 208, the dwarf Zuglar Blazedswords ruled from The Cathedral of Gods of The Doctrine of Influences in Ripewhips.”

I paused, to sip at beer, but then continued.

“In 211, The Manor of Dawn razed The Cathedral of Gods in Ripewhips.
In 211, the goblin Tun Paintumbra gave up being a farmer to become a trader in Ripewhips.
In 212, The Manor of Dawn of The Rare Ship constructed The Sanctum of Dragons in Ripewhips.
In 212, The Order of Twilight formed in The Sanctum of Dragons in Ripewhips.
In 212, The dwarf Asmel Faithanvils ruled from The Sanctum of Dragons of The Order of Twilight in Ripewhips.
In the late autumn of 218, the dwarf Goden Actorb became a farmer in Ripewhips.
In 219, the dwarf Goden Actorb became a farmer in Ripewhips.
In the early winter of 220, the dwarf Goden Actorb aroused general suspicion in Ripewhips after a murder.
In the early winter of 220, the dwarf Goden Actorb stopped being a farmer in Ripewhips.”

Markus_cz was angry, creases around his eyes and his fist clenched in his lap. He did not interrupt. I witnessed scamtank clench teeth. Not due to dry biscuit.

“In 223, the goblin Lolor Towngate settled in Ripewhips.
In 223, the goblin Lolor Towngate became a fishery worker in Ripewhips.
In 232, the dwarf Erush Cloutwalled became a jeweler in Ripewhips.
In the early summer of 233, the goblin Limul Figuredwelled profaned The Sanctum of Dragons in Ripewhips.”

Bad Munki spat again. Nettle Soup, Internet Kraken, all grieved as Vox Nihili already silently greaved.

“It is 236. No report from Ripewhips has been heard since 233. In 233 there should have been some five hundred dwarves or more at Ripewhips but there were no more than half that at best. Since at least 189, goblins have been free in Ripewhips. Freed from iron chain, first to weave or make soap closely watched by dwarves. Labor and subservience. Fitting for war captives.”

Internet Kraken nodded slowly, but Bad Munki muttered “fools” and was correct.

“Bembul Lurepaged at The Mysterious Temple gave compassion to goblins. In 198 goblins farmed, in open caverns where escape through tunnels tempted. And in 203 a well-behaved goblin was issued crossbow and permitted hunting outdoors of Ripewhips.”

“I have seen such a thing at Pagetin,” Vox Nihili spoke. “At Pagetin near a thousand dwarves live with many humans and elves and there are some three dozen goblin servants. They haul buckets and till soil and collect refuse and are not fettered by chains.”

“Aye. That is how it started also at Ripewhips. But a goblin will breed if permitted and at Ripewhips it was permitted by Bembul Lurepaged because it was not forbidden by her. Bembul Lurepaged in 174 became the Sacred Direction of The Fellowship of Adventuring, a dwarven religion of the Realm of Soul centered around the worship of Titthal. In 185 she withdrew from society as a one with a fey mood. But she did not labor at a workshop. She remained secluded thereafter without explanation in records.”

“And yet she permitted the temple razed?” Nettle Soup asked.

“No. In 207 Bembul died of old age. Details are not known but in 207 during memorial while no dwarf ruled Ripewhips, The Mysterious Temple was razed. The Fellowship of Adventuring was mostly dwarves but also humans were permitted and in 203 the goblin Limul Figuredwelled became a member. In 205, the goblin Unib Faceglazes became a member of The Fellowship of Adventuring.”

“After the temple was razed, in the early spring of 207 the dwarf Zon Earlyboats became the sacred direction, and in 208 many dwarves left the Fellowship as well as both goblins. There is record that a dwarf Cog Treatytouches became the sacred direction in the early spring of 217, but no other record of members since 208.”

“So the faith was corrupted and eventually fell,” Nettle Soup surmised, and I indicated correctness.

“It is written The Manner of Dawn razed the temple and then in the next year raised The Cathedral of Gods, and formed The Doctrine of Influences. The Cathedral of Gods was also dedicated to Titthal. Therefore the faith of The Fellowship of Adventuring for Titthal was anathema and replaced with new Titthal worship doctrine at the new temple.”

“It may happen in religion from time to time,” said Vox Nihili, “one worship replaces another. But to raze their temple is not correct.”

“But even then there were still more dwarves than goblins in Ripewhips,” Markus_cz prompted rightly to remind that I should progress the discussion.

“Aye. It is a sign of the turmoil. The temple founded in 208 lasted only until 211 when it too was razed, by members of its own faith this time, and The Sanctum of Dragons replaced it. Zuglar Blazedswords was the High Savior and all those that left The Fellowship of Adventuring in 208 had joined with him.”

“But in 211,” I said softly, “In the early spring of 211, the goblin Limul Figuredwelled became the high savior of The Doctrine of Influences.”

There was quiet. None needed speak to give voice to such outrage.

“No doubt that is why The Cathedral of Gods was razed. Dwarves at Ripewhips warred. Without weapons, without clash of battle, but war of doctrine. Some dwarves must have counted goblins and known disaster approached. Perhaps some dwarves attempted overthrow in secret. Records are not known. But other dwarves allowed a goblin into temple, allowed even a goblin to be high savior of faith to sacred Titthal. And thus leadership of Ripewhips itself.”

I sipped again at beer to whet dry lips.

“What is known is that by 212, Asmel Faithanvils was the sacred master of The Order of Twilight that built The Sanctum of Dragons, also dedicated to Titthal, and many joined. But in 213, it is recorded the goblin Limul Figuredwelled became a member also of The Order of Twilight. Many dwarves joined in that year and in years following.”

“The same goblin that had become leader of the previous temple,” added Internet Kraken unnecessarily.

“Aye. And she was the same goblin that three years ago, in 233, profaned The Sanctum of Dragons,” I explained. “By then already there had been murders, several in 219 and 220. Goblins outnumbered dwarves but dwarves died while goblins did not. No battles fought, no war made, but dwarves were losing the mountain hall. So it is written in the records I studied, last year when I dwelled at Shipshook. Since 233 at least sixty dwarves at Shipshook have died without record told of how.”

“Goblins,” Bad Munki declared with fierceness, “must not be made unfettered captives in a fortress.”

No dwarf argued.

Thank you very much for your compliments. :) I hope that I can keep up the quality and continue to entertain.

So The Rare Ship must have basically dominated a lot of the world in conquest, since we've been able to absorb so many other races into our cities. Are we totally imperialist badasses? Because that would be the upshot.

There are over 100,000 dwarves living in Omon Atho, which is the name of our world (it means "The Realm of Soul).

They are divided into six dwarven civilizations (plus emigrants, captives, and hermits). The Rare Ship directly borders two others, as shown on the map on page 1: The Cloisters of Exalting and The Gem of Testing. I do not see where in Legends it gives populations for specific civilizations, although I think it's fair to say that ours is neither especially large or especially small compared to the others. I could add up the numbers in all of our cities, maybe I'll do that later (or maybe I should avoid any more displays of arithmetic incompetence).

Perhaps our dwarves have heard of or had some small amount of contact with these other four dwarven civs:

The Feral Lanterns
The Maroon Lance
The Silver of Scenarios
The Cave of Pastimes

But none of them immediately border us, so perhaps not.

Taken as a whole, I don't think we can say that our civ dominates. The Cloisters and the Gem have several mountain halls that are within what we might have considered our own borders (and vice-versa): but I think that dwarves do not conceptualize borders on a map the same way humans do (you own what's in your mountain hall, but how can you own a mountain? They're raw unyielding wildernesses and there's nothing to prevent free travel by anyone in and through and around your holes in the rock.) So to a dwarf, it is not inconsistent or alarming to have geographically intermingled forts, as long as the lines of travel between your own mountain halls are uninterrupted.

We do have some humans, some elves, and of course the goblins I've mentioned, living within a few of our cities. Most of our cities are dwarf-only (well, and a fuckload of animals).

Hope you enjoy .

This has a weird sort of alienness to it that I like. I could totally see this being a call to prayer for a particular temple. Thanks!

I just realised we're still only into Hematite (April). The quality of the updates made me think a lot more time had passed for some reason.

Yeah, between a prologue and the interlude, and the effort and detail of getting a fort started, I've not gone very fast in terms of in-game time. Going forward I need to get things moving better, for no other reason than I have a hard deadline of Thursday (I'm flying out of the country Friday and really don't want to have to try to do updates from my work laptop while traveling, although I can do so in theory).

That was an amazing history lesson leperflesh.

So some captured goblins just bred and bred and slowly took over the fortress from within. Wow i had no idea that could even happen in worldgen. Congratulations on finding such an incredible event in legends mode.

Well, to be completely honest the game is silent about exactly how or why the goblins show up. Actually legends mode only tracks "notable" historical figures, so only a tiny fraction of the denizens of any particular area are recorded there. You have to kind of surmise what was going on and fill in the blanks.

That said, every single legend/history I quoted is genuine, and I did not add anything that is contradicted by the history. But Legends does not say specifically that the goblins got there in the first place by being captives. That's just the only possibility that makes any drat sense.

Do those of us who pick up the game after you get to push ourselves further up the dwarf list, Leper?

Overseer's Prerogative applies in this LP as well. Which is to say, yes, if you're overseer, you get to skip in front in order to get your dwarf actually into the fortress for narrative purposes (although you are not required to do so).

In some cases if an Overseer happens to get a migration just before they're planning to finish up and hand off to the next person, I'll ask them to keep one dwarf un-nicknamed for this purpose.

I'm on my way to bed so I'll update the OP with TremendousMajestic's journal entry and TildeATH's improved graphics tomorrow morning. Also thanks Gray, I was thinking about categorizing but hadn't committed to the idea yet.

Chapter 4

27th Hematite
While returning to outdoors to fish (still no fishery) Internet Kraken is surprised at the butchery by a kangaroo.

There is a brief scuffle and then the kangaroo flees while Kraken returns to the fortress to report mayhem.

Thereafter he descends to dig with Nettle Soup. He professes mining is not shirking.

1st Malachite
The smelter is finished. I order mechanisms built.

In the afternoon there is excitement and loud declarations as dwarves are sighted from the west. Migrants have come! They gather on the hill, perhaps awaiting welcome or not spotting the entrance for Bad Munki is in kitchen and not patrolling while Internet Kraken is digging below.

I felt relief of burden I had not known I hauled that Sankis has been faithful. She was not only words and a bag of tourmalines if dwarves traveled to find Bronzestabbed.

Nine dwarves have come!

But there must be caution. Strangers should be shown due honor but not undue faith until proven.

3rd Malachite

The migrants were hailed and have slowly filed in. Each checks in at my office where I record details in the records. They have the 'alias' given by Sankis and so I write this. The subterfuge I thought was clever when Sankis first explained but now it puzzles. But I will not overrule because it is not a great trouble and Sankis represents royal will.

Asehujiko Gosmermeng “Umbralashed” is married to Teim Utharzulban and is of middle age. She smiled nervously and drummed fingers on my desk and reported skill at potash making which is useless but she has smoothed floors and cut stone before thus she will stonework. Additionally Asehujiko complemented my organization.

Teim Utharzulban “Firstbanners” is husband to Asehujiko and is of middle age. He reports substantial engraving talent. Additionally he has worked many small jobs and understands the crossbow. He was nervous but made joke about nervousness that was amusing but crude regarding bodily function. An engraver will carve history in the great hall but until then Teim will perform many small jobs.

PublicOpinion Necikakrul “Singetin” is married to Koorisch Idenzuglar and is blushing youth recently brided. She protested recordkeeping and claimed one month apprenticeship at hunting at Cavepacks. Internet Kraken is one hunter too many presently therefore PublicOpinion will perform many small jobs and perhaps eventually recruit for crossbow militia or perhaps fashion stone crafts.

Koorisch Idenzuglar “Paddleships” is husband to PublicOpinion and is of short-bearded youth recently groomed. He placated wife over paperwork and claimed experience farming. Crops are destined for this year therefore Koorisch will farm but until then Koorisch will perform many small jobs.

Crackmaster Sodelimush “Shielddikes” is married to Kelli Telingcerol and is of middle age. She was slow to answer questions and behaved guardedly but is well spoken. Crackmaster professes great skill at gem setting and can wield a mace with efficiency. She has also performed several small jobs and brought a beloved keet named Geshud Uzrigoth that is a small brown game bird and is male therefore no small eggs. Crackmaster will carve and set pyrites unless required for militia duty.

Kelli Telingcerol “Coastlens” is husband to Crackmaster and is of middle age. He answered questions with single words and claimed long experience operating pumps at Mirrorgorged. Additionally he desired fishing which I allow on premise that perhaps Kelli will construct a fishery.

Fitzy Fitz Bardumiden “Foughtpaddles” is a widower of late middle age. He has lived at Shottome, and is an ardent worshipper of Ugath Muckcrypts. He stared at the floor while elaborating about his lost spouse. His wife Fikod Shiptowns was a beast hunter who famously battled a brush titan in The Humorous Plain who ambushed and struck her down. Fitzy Fitz recalls every detail of history he knows with perfectness. Fitzy Fitz has performed minor acts of crafting but has no other talent. Fitzy Fitz will perform minor tasks unless Bad Munki needs a recruit with historical knowledge. His first task is bone greaves.

Nomikos Berinal “Earthenlulled” is married to i poo poo trains Lekkeskal and is a blushing youth recently brided. She stuttered answer that she is from Shottome and can stab well with a spear. Having tracking skills also but no domestic skill Nomikos will join the militia and hopefully not immediately produce a baby.

i poo poo trains Lekkeskal “Bristleshot” is husband to Nomikos and is of short-bearded youth recently groomed. He clicked tongue and was impatient of recordkeeping. i poo poo trains has dabbled with a few small jobs but is mighty and of strapping health therefore Bad Munki will train him for combat alongside his bride.

It is a motley group of four married couples (two very young and two of middle age) and a lone widower Ugath-fanatic. I do not surmise what Sankis sought or found in these dwarves but our number is more than doubled which more than doubles chances for survival although immediately also more than doubles mouths to feed. The first smelted metal will make another pick to speed digging.

5th Malachite
Fiendish Murk. Kelli is fishing and has not been adequately warned. However he has obeyed restrictions of fishing holes and is not close. Writhing limbs of dusk drape over grass and trees southwest of the stream bend.

6th Malachite
It is passed. Newcomer dwarves are uproared. Vox Nihili pastures a keet with the turkey hen and I instruct Tiem to make an anmial trap. Internet Kraken and Nettle Soup carve limestone. Markus_cz, Bad Munki and I calm dwarves and warn no loitering near Glumpwrongs.

Fitzy Fitz cancels bone greaves due to insufficient bones despite two entire horses of bones, instead making bone gauntlets.

7th Malachite
I am reported PublicOpinion is in possession a bronze crossbow and stacks of steel bolts with which she hunts without permission. Reviewing records I find hunting was not forbidden but PublicOpinion did not report ownership of metal bolts. Preservation of steel for war is the superior policy at Bronzestabbed. But PublicOpinion will not know until she returns.

9th Malachite
Kelli constructs the fishery then fetches raw turtles for preparation. Internet Kraken successfully shirked fishery but only by laboring with the pick.

The wood furnace is also complete. I order stacks of charcoal.

PublicOpinion is spotted distantly hunting among glumpwrongs near haunted stream. I will not risk another dwarf to go fetch her.

11th Malachite

PublicOpinion can be seen expending steel bolts on a weasel. It is slain with one shot showing superior marksdwarfship.

12th Malachite
Having returned her kill PublicOpinion obeys restrictions and relinquishes steel bolts. There is no blame for misunderstanding. I will be more careful with instructions.

I order construction of rock mechanisms for use and trade.

14th Malachite
I discussed with Bad Munki. I ordered doors for Dirtpractices that drilling does not disturb sleep at The Noble Rest. Bad Munki organized his recruits but had discouragement.

“I spent days out there in the grass looking for weasels” he told me and I reminded of nearby goblin fortresses.
“You will have to do what you can with the new recruits, Bad Munki,” I told him. “I will have bronze for weapons and armor soon. The burden is on you therefore be steadfast,” I consoled. Bad Munki is not pleased but he is dutiful.

I ordered trees cut and berries gathered for brewing will be needed soon as only 30 drinks remain and charcoal making will use the remaining cut wood. There is a farmer for indoor crops but an eating hall should be finished before I devote miners to other tasks.

19th Malachite
I told Koorisch to learn mechanics. Vox Nihili must work furnaces and therefore cannot always make mechanisms. Crackmaster and scamtank gather plants. I assign i poo poo trains also because he is idle and a farmer should know of plants.

21st Malachite
Several dwarves gather to drink at the stockpiles. Bad Munki joins and I overhear recounting of Ripewhips. Newcomers will ponder alongside veterans so better to understand when I explain Bronzestabbed.

23rd Malachite
Vox Nihili relieved of making mechanisms cuts trees. I assign Crackmaster and Kelli tree-hewing and relieve Vox of this labor. There is only one axe besides Bad Munki's so newcomers must share. Fitzy Fitz who has dabbled woodcrafting will also carpent while Nettle Soup is busy mining. Inferior bins will store ammunition no worse than fine bins.

1st Galena
Bad Munki relieves Nomikos to train i poo poo trains.

The dining hall nears completion and a chair and table are placed. Malachite ore is plentiful but prospecting for more cassiterite will be required because cassiterite is not a vein stone rather found as small clusters.

Horse bone gauntlets are assigned to Bad Munki.

I update records to find sufficient berries for brewing. There are biscuits and stews to last for months but more brews are needed soon.

Bronzestabbed hums. I feel satisfaction. I know satisfaction is temporary due to the purpose of The Noble Work, but temporary satisfaction is still to be cherished.
