Aren't you required by law to say "the Holy Roman Empire, which was neither holy nor Roman..."? This comes from Strange Maps, with the cringe-inducing title of "Yes We Clan".

They seem to actually be selling this on Amazon: Photo Jigsaw Puzzle of Crematorium at Dachau concentration camp, Dachau, Bavaria, Germany, Europe from Robert Harding Although I'm not sure how the pink pieces on the left would get assembled to make the image on the right.

I'm just making sure this photo makes it to the new page, because I think it's cool as hell. Partly it's the colors, I think, and partly it's the whole aesthetic of that assembly taking place in that setting. drat. (L.A. riots)

Armyman25 posted:What's funny is that Estonia tore down this monument to the Russian forces before building that monument. Actually, its the opposite. Lihula monument was put up in 2004 (and government tore it down nine days later) while Bronze Soldier riots happened in 2007. Wars suck for everyone. There isn't much difference which side you fight for.

This owns so much, I love how Grantham is marked on it, and is the northernmost English settlement (for those who don't know, Margaret Thatcher was born in Grantham, it's a very small town with no significance otherwise).

A moment of silence, friends, for a titan has passed away. Eric Hobsbawm died today at the age of 95. The world has scarcely known a greater labor historian. Thank you for your life and work, Professor.

shortprsn posted:Have some police brutality: Doing Philly proud. http://youtu.be/NorgJ0zivAA Wikipedia posted:During the Continuation War, the Finnish Army discovered that the retreating Soviets had scattered radio-controlled mines throughout the re-captured city of Viipuri. These mines were set off when a three-note chord was played on the frequency the radio was tuned to, causing three tuning forks (of which each mine had a unique combination) to vibrate at once. Once the Army and Yleisradio experts discovered how the mines worked, a Yleisradio mobile transmitter was brought to Viipuri, and Vesterinen's polka was played on the same frequencies the mines used. This operation continued for over three months, until the batteries of the mines were drained.

I recently dug this out of storage, it was given to me by a friend back in the 1980's. He collected Nazi and Klan stuff, which was interesting considering he was Jewish. (He also had an extensive collection of railroad lanterns, Frank Zappa records, and airline china settings, an odd mix) The bottom text says "Knight of the Ku Klux Klan Realm of Justice, Alabama" It's painted from the back side of the glass and is about 2 feet high. I don't know what the hell to do with it.

'Our Fellow Man' (as long as he's white and protestant, Irish need not apply) I'm glad you believe in the free market principles of Sex Workers, ArmyMan, comfort girls are certainly a better choice than raping your fellow soldiers or the natives (The military doesn't do abstinence-only sex ed?)

McDowell posted:'Our Fellow Man' (as long as he's white and protestant, Irish need not apply) At least five years or so ago, unofficial briefings for overseas stations (Germany, Korea) basically said "wrap it up, hire a whore, their STD rates are less than you'll find with your female coworkers". Nowadays, DoD policy bans any servicemembers from using the services of prostitutes, even in countries where it is legal (because of human trafficking concerns).
