For more content, Rinehart who is now the world's richest woman, has recently said poor people are poor because they're lazy drunks. http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/08/30/777271/worlds-richest-woman-poor-drunks/ It should be noted though that Rinehart made her fortune through hard work, an outrageous mining boom, and inhering $75 million from her father, $75 million in 1991 dollars at that. She's like Mitt Romney, but unimaginably richer.

Roughly around 10% of American adults are thought not to have a photo ID. It gets worse in different areas, case in point, in Philadelphia, it was estimated at 18%. Big cities always get talked about, but I assume in rural areas it can be just as bad, never forget how freakin rural some parts of America are(and usually just as poor as the inner city). It might be a 90 minute drive to the nearest DMV that is opened only on the 5th Wednesday of every month.(This was true in some county in one of the states that passed a photo ID law). Plus, many people do not have their social security cards or birth certificates to get said IDs, and getting those cost money, not to mention is a ridiculous pain in the rear end if you don't have a photo ID. Plus, all the rhetoric and implementation of actual laws. For example, see the Ohio secretary of state allowing longer voting hours in Republican counties while not allowing it in Democratic counties, till the uproar eventually made him say no early voting for anyone.(That's another aspect, the reduction of early voting and same day registration, things that usually benefit Democrats). These people don't give a gently caress about voting or protecting the right to vote, in fact they're doing everything in they're power to make it more difficult down to restricting when you can vote as much as possible. It has everything to do with Republicans trying to guarantee they win elections when the only demographic they have any lead in what so ever anymore is white men, especially non poor white men. Basically the two party system is lovely, but it's really lovely when the election of a black man and realization that their base has made their party toxic to anyone who isn't white men has turned one of two political parties into complete sociopaths when it comes to politics. e: Also, this quote:Because even though the United States is regularly called "first world," that doesn't describe the conditions of a significant portion of the population. Seriously, if you ever come to America, explore our inner cities, then go explore our rural areas as well, prepare for mindfuck.

Oh badass women at war? Let me introduce the thread to the Night Witches.(Or the 588th bomber squadron, Night Witches was what the Germans started calling them.) Here are a few of them An all female Soviet bomber squadron who flew the worst planes imaginable, the PO-2, a plane originally meant for training and crop dusting from 1928. No guns, No radio to communicate with ground, no navigation beyond a stop watch and and a map, a regular map, not a flight map, and sometimes the prop would stall out in mid air and have to restarted. The plane did have ridiculous maneuverability and a top speed lower than the stall out speed of German fighters, two aspects the women used with devastating skill. http://www.badreputation.org.uk/2011/05/27/unsung-heroes-the-night-witches/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Witches quote:The Night Witches developed a far more effective method for getting past the circus of flak: flying in groups of three, two planes would approach the target and wait for the searchlights to pick them up. These two would then split apart and manoeuvre around the target, drawing the attention of the cannons. The third plane, having waited behind, would cut their engines and glide in to deliver the bombs. This was repeated until each of the three planes had made a bombing run. The mind boggles at the sheer level of stone-cold bravery needed to repeatedly offer yourself as a distraction to dozens of flak cannons, protected only by a flimsy frame of wood and fabric, and to keep doing that night after night. Well, I didn't know about Mallory Owens until now. Now I'm pretty sad. Pic: Also, another pic. The SS United States was the fastest ocean liner to ever sail the Atlantic. So fast her engine design was kept secret for decades. A role she kept from the early 1950's to 1970. Following that and the decline of the trans-Atlantic passenger trade, she remained in an odd limbo as she was purchased by various companies through the 80's and 90's as they planned to put her into other cruising uses. All the various plans though fell through and the liner for years lagged in Phili collecting rust as its owners at the time put it up for sale, either to scrap yards or people who wanted to convert it. Despite a lower bid, the preservationist won out in 2011. It was announced in 2011 that by the end of 2012 a new developer would be chosen for the United States and a new home city the next year. A metaphor for the whole country? You decide.

The Senate was created in order to discourage the abuse of smaller or less populous states by the larger or more populous. We have a house of congress with (more or less) population proportional representation as well: it's called the House of Representatives. The point is the Senate is loving stupid for the exact reason the chart shows. The House is irrelevant when the Senate has equal power and Wyoming has the same representation as a state like California with over 40x the population. Hell, constitutional representatives in the 18th century admitted the Senate was stupid but it was the only way to get a deal. At the time though the larges state only had around 9-10x the population of the smallest state, not over 40x. Crossposting from GBS thread, old anti women's suffrage posters

The front page of Huffpo last night and earlier today. Normally HuffPo sucks, but this I was enjoying also: This is a cemetery in Helsinki. As cremation becomes more common every single year combined with increased demand for land, how we go about death in the future may change drastically. I don't mean in the sense of how we deal with bodies, but in terms of how we view death in general. When anyone thinks of a cemetery, they think of a sprawling, quiet, and generally sad place. There is no life, just rows of gray tombstones, it is a place for mourning and that is all. Imagine if the above was the norm though. I think it gives off a vibe of a celebration of past lives, not the mournful longing that typical cemeteries give off. e:whoops, didn't realize how huge that picture was.
