Editorial for American Apparel from a magazine called i-D. It was written in 2007, but purportedly American Apparel was so proud of it, that they had it on the front page of their website. Here's the editorial text:

quote:

Sweeter then candy. Better than cake.
American Apparel is under 10 years of age - so it makes sense such a young brand has found a way into the hearts and wardrobes of the world's hippest kids.
i-D Magazine
September 2007

From Seoul to Shoreditch, New York to the Netherlands, Fukuoka to France, American Apparel continue to put most of the high street to shame with their innovative designs - without resorting to copying designers. Their ads, complete with hot girls and boys from the AA staff, have a perfect Terry Richardson-style grunginess. The clothes live up to the ads' promises - and have ensured the brand's visibility in high class places. See the metallic leggings rubbing shoulders with Balenciaga and Givenchy in every fashion shoot for autumn/winter. And that bodycon low-back dress worn by headturners everywhere, in shades from black to fuschia. They even expanded from cotton to jeans and cord - a hit with the East London teenage contingent. Children and animals get a look in too, with multicoloured babygrows and mini tees providing parents with an excuse to dress up Junior and Rover just like them. The latest demographic given the AA treatment is Kensington's locals. The brand recently opened their forth store in the UK on High Street Ken. Get down there for some priceless pocket money style now.

Also why do they hate Lord of the Rings so much? :(

The only decent Bullshit episodes that I recall were the ones about creationism and immigration, oh and ghosts/psychics too. Also, I think they just hate LotR because it's escapism and their fragile libertarian minds can't handle a fictional story in a fantasy world. Keep in mind, these two are loving magicians, and they don't like a story because it's a fantasy.

From what I can tell, the poster reads, "Lady Italy raped and massacred by Roma. Italy pays with blood for the folly of immigration." and then a time and place for a torchlight procession. This is put on by Forza Nuova (New Force), an Italian fascist group.

VVVV If it's about the Big, Fat, Gypsy Wedding billboard, the show's been accused of portraying Roma incredibly stereotypically. The ads have also been accused of being racist in and of themselves. I don't live in the UK so I can't confirm whether or not the show is discriminatory. I've only read about it.

These pictures are taken from the Congo Free State, an African country controlled by Belgium in the late 19th century. King Leopold II used the Congo Free State to profit off of several resources, most notably, rubber. Slavery was the main source of labor, and soldiers were used to enforce rubber quotas. The punishment for not meeting these quotas was death, with the soldiers later removing the hands to prove that they had killed someone. However, some soldiers would simply cut off a person's hand while they were still alive, probably to save on ammunition. It is estimated that during the existence of the Congo Free State, between 5 and 20 million people were killed.

I'll confess to even being more of a manchild 20 years ago than I am now, and I while I never owned a firearm, I was heavily in support of the right to at that time, often read Guns & Ammo, etc. I recall this book being heavily praised especially considering the authors supposed biases at the time heading into the research, and a quick googling now about it of course inundates me with libertarian sites and gushing reviews from the expected fans. Never read it at the time though.

So, what's the general consensus on this 20 years later? Other than this chart I see posted (often mocked), haven't heard much about it. Could someone offer up some links to well reasoned critique of the book that I'm obviously too inept to find?

Some of the problems with the chart include what qualifies as an 'injury' in terms of severity, survivability, etc. For all we know, gunchart's qualification for injury could be anything from scraped skin cells to a missing limb. Second, even assuming the best (imo, 'Injury' qualifying as bruises and cuts) the gun end of the chart having a low rate of injury doesn't necessarily mean that all but 13% of people are coming away unscathed. This is because the chart expressly ignores fatality rates. So again, for all we know, 83% of people using guns could've been killed.

It was a rambling narrative about a production cycle and how terrible every step of it is and for what little value, and it was phenomenal and I wish I had a copy of it.

I hope someone does find it, because it actually sounds really interesting. As a substitute, here's an archive of LF effort posts (linked to the 'Work' category because the first page has like 5000 youtube links and takes forever to load). Here's Mr. Terrific fighting the Klan:

Also something interesting I found out about the old Superman radio show:

"Wikipedia posted:

The series delivered a powerful blow against the Ku Klux Klan's prospects in the northern USA. The human rights activist Stetson Kennedy infiltrated the KKK and other racist/terrorist groups. Concerned that the organization had links to the government and police forces, Kennedy decided to use his findings to strike at the Klan in a different way. He contacted the Superman producers and proposed a story where the superhero battles the Klan. Looking for new villains, the producers eagerly agreed. To that end, he provided information—including secret codewords and details of Klan rituals—to the writers. The result was a series of episodes, “Clan of the Fiery Cross,” in which Superman took on the Klan. Kennedy intended to strip away the Klan's mystique. The trivialization of the Klan's rituals and codewords was perceived to have had a negative impact on Klan recruiting and membership.

Reportedly, Klan leaders denounced the show and called for a boycott of Kellogg's products. However, the story arc earned spectacular ratings, and the food company stood by its support of the show.

The part about the code words is said to be untrue, however.
