I haven't been deep into a Dynasty Warriors game since 3 (played some of 4 and 5 but 3 consumed an entire summer for me and a friend), could someone explain the XL games? If I wanted to play DW7, does XL have the original game plus the extra stuff, or is it actually an expansion pack that only has the extra stuff in it? The OP makes it sound like it was designed to be installed on top of DW7 but obviously since it's a disc and not DLC I'm not fully understanding it.

The XL games are side stories that have their own standalone content, but can be "installed" onto their parent game so that you can use your pre-existing progress and whatnot with the new content and add some new features or characters to the old game. The way they work (which is weird these days) is that you pop in the XL disk and then select an option from the main menu that's usually labelled something like "import" or "install", then swap in your corresponding DW disk, let the system read it, then swap the XL disk back in and go.

I decided to take a look at RotK XI (they seem to be using Dynasty Warriors 4 models in the game?) and am working my way through the tutorial alongside a random game i opened up. I could swear somewhere in the Tutorial (and somewhere on the internet) i read that you could put your cities / forces under AI control for some time and take control back after a while.

I'll be damned if i can find the option. Does anyone know where it is? Google failed me on this.

That's called establishing a district. Look under the menu options that are lower in the city commands list, and remember that you can manage your districts from any city - not just the ones you want to put on autopilot. Also, a great way to make sure that your main territory has enough AP to do what you want each turn is to use one of your less active districts as a bank of AP and money to reward your officers.

Which means now Koei needs to get From Software on the phone and license Solaire, Laurentius, Siegmeyer and Tarkus for the next crossover title :syoon:

Oh my god. They'd fit in perfectly. Also Sieglinde can be there for the necessary moe slot.

You could really make a case for a ton of Souls characters to show up in a musou game: Biorr, Patches, Logan and Quelana are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head who have enough personality or visually interesting design to fit the bill. Heck, even some of the humanoid bosses would work - considering Gyuki and Dodomeki, you could easily shove Ornstein and Smough in.

EDIT: And considering the whole "the fabric of reality is really thin" justification the Souls games use to justify their multiplayer mechanics you literally need only the flimsiest of excuses to have them show up. Yeah, Solaire wants to gently caress up some evildoers in crazy bizarro Chinapan, what of it? :colbert:

Guan Xing and Zhang Bao at least make a small amount of sense, because they were involved in the conflict with Wu following the deaths of their fathers - recapturing the black dragon and taking revenge on Pan Zhang and all that, etc.. They also had a role in a couple of the campaigns against the north.

Why we got catgirl and her beau instead of soldiers like Cheng Pu or Yu Jin remains a mystery, of course.

Cao Cao's relationship to Dun and Yuan is mentioned in passing in earlier titles, but I think DW7 is the first game that bothers to explain it.

EDIT: My favorite Zhang He scene is probably when he's got Ma Su surrounded at Mt. Dingjun in DW4. He's still got the elegance schtick, but he doesn't sound like Yuri Lowenthal doing an insulting impersonation of the character and his dialogue is more violent metaphor than "oh my gosh I'm so beautiful".

Zhang He was definitely a tough customer. He was one of the Five Generals of Wei, noted for his leadership ability and his talent for adapting to rapidly changing battlefield conditions. Even Zhuge Liang was wary of this resourcefulness and famously described Zhang He as "valorous beyond compare". He went toe-to-toe with Zhang "Everyone in Wu is afraid of this man" Liao and fought him to a standstill. Not really what I would call the attributes and exploits of a useless dandy.

I've got a question about DW/Warriors Orochi for you guys, which do you recommend getting to enjoy some local/couch co-op action? The latest DW I played was 6, and while it was kinda mediocre, it allowed you to jump right into coop action in the story mode. From what I can gather, DW7 doesn't let you do this until you've completed the campaign first? But I'm not sure if the Extreme Legends allows this, so any extra input on the differences between these two would be great.

Also, I've never played any of the Warriors Orochi games, but they seem like a blast. How's the co-op in the 3rd? Might get that if DW7 isn't that co-op friendly.

You can only play co-op in DW7's conquest mode, unless you also get xtreme legends and load it into the session before you start. WO3 supports co-op right from the start.

"A few characters" is kind of an understatement. Many of them got stuffed into one of a handful of generic movesets - Ma Chao, Sun Ce, Zhang He and Tashi Ci all had the same bland, lovely spear moveset, for example. The cloned characters are listed here.

That was the thing that pissed me off about 6. I could take or leave renbu, but when you deliberately take a cast of characters in a game that's known for its variety and cram almost all of them into a handful of generic animations it's just stupid.
