peanut- posted:Finished reading The Great Work. I've read a few of Guy Haley's books now and I really dislike his version of the Imperium. Everything feels so sanitised and heroic and largely misses the point for me - it's like 40k via Marvel movies. Did you read Baneblade and/or Shadowsword? I think they toe the line fairly well.

Titan's Bane was really good while it lasted. I guess I have a thing for immersive tank crew stories.

I'd point out the Terminus Est but that one's a reference to another series.

How is Graham McNeill, overall? People mention him a lot less than they used to when talking about their favorite authors. I personally wasn't too taken with False Gods and Fulgrim.

Just wish they didn't have the guardsmen in 40k standard Cadian armor. I liked how they initially had 18th/19th century looking greatcoat uniforms, contrasted nicely with the setting's present.

People say to skip the titan battles in Mortis, but how about Titandeath? I know Haley can write some thrilling titan battles from Shadowsword.

D-Pad posted:You want the Gathering Storm books. They look like codexes but are 80% story and only 20% rules or whatever. They tell it in a narrative format too not in the way codexes typically have a bunch of small lore snippets. The first book goes into great detail about the fall of cadia and the other two tell the complete story of the quest to resurrect Guilliman and subsequent events. All together it's at least one, maybe two normal fiction books worth of story. They are expensive secondary market but are available now on Warhammer vault. BigShasta posted:Is this a situation where the gathering storm books have to be viewed through the vault itself via an app/site, or can they be downloaded? Probably a dumb question. The Wiki pages for the 13th Black Crusade and Roboute Guilliman have a ridiculous amount of text, I wouldn't be surprised if they contain large sections of the books verbatim.

orphean posted:So Steel Tread. Exactly what I hoped it would be - very much Fury in a Demolisher in tone. I felt like a plot thread or two wasn't really followed up on but very solid overall. A little tropey when it comes to characterization and plot setup e.g. new commander having to prove themselves to a ragtag group of broken misfits is pretty standard stuff. But if you like Guard, Tanks, Guard in Tanks, and Anti-Titan precision Deathstrike missiles being dropped on a single squad of chaos marines totally check it out. A fun ride. Guy Haley's superheavy tank books were what got me into reading the Black Library so I'll definitely be eager to check this one out.

Improbable Lobster posted:Apropos of nothing, I just want to say that Black Library has done a pretty good job of integrating queer characters into newer books in a way that doesn't feel forced or like a footnote. It comes up when it's would naturally come up, it's not treated differently than cishet characters/and LGBTQphobia either doesn't come up or is treated with the appropriate tact and weight What are some of the better books with queer characters?

Bloodlines is a constant series of police procedural cliches so far. Which isn't a complaint, because I always enjoy each and every one of those cliches, with my very limited experience with the genre.

DaysBefore posted:Wish they had gone with a look for the Imperial Army that wasn't 'Also Cadians'. Although I guess that may be Malcador's personal goon At first, (especially on the cover of Legion) they looked like Cossacks. I guess they made them look like Cadians again to make them more marketable. In other news, I finished Honour Guard today. It was great having the Pardus fight alongside the First. I do hope there are future books that portray comradely cooperation with other regiments - the blurbs don't make me too optimistic in that regard.

I skimmed through Titandeath by Guy Haley and focused on the parts that interested me. The bulk of the book was focused on the titan fighting at the tail end of the Heresy, but I kind of wish the book had been structured more like The First Heretic and had spent a lot of time following the all-female Legio through their formation and early days. But hey, I do consistently like the way Haley writes.

Or scenes of the primarchs' childhood or early adulthood, because many of them seem to be set after the Emperor contacted them. FPyat fucked around with this message at 04:19 on Jun 2, 2022 |

I find it a little weird how they tack "A [character/faction] novel" on everything. Don't get me wrong, it's useful, just funny to use "A" when it's the only book featuring that protagonist.

I don't want 40k society to be just accepting of LGBTQ people, I want it have to have cultural ideas about queerness and gender that aren't oppressive, just weird and alien in a way that reflects the deranged ideological mishmash of the Imperial Cult. Like you could have excerpts from a theological tract making the wildest arguments about why homosexual relationships glorify the human essence or something.
