To be fair going the wrong direction in Planetside could just be an effect of the game's completely awful vehicle physics.

Every major metropolitan area or region probably had their own different companies. In Houston we had Key Maps. Apparently they're still around in some fashion, though I'm sure whatever business they're doing these days is some tiny fraction of their peak.

My band uses the our atlas at least once a tour. Not much cell service when you take this route, but hopefully you loaded up on beer/snacks/an INFLATED spare.

I believe the Norwegian automobile association still distributes their map book to their members, and it's a bit of an institution; it's got recommended journeys and small articles about every little crossroads you'll pass through - and what I suspect is one of the best collections of etymologies for Norwegian place names. Google maps is kind of boring in comparison, for all its convenience.

For one thing, we spent a lot of time in National Forest land so 98% of the first two days had zero cell service. The other thing was that the map just did a pretty good job of indicating useful/important locations.

but I really wish I had it. It's nice that the base model has an SD card slot but navigating through a 64GB card full of music is kind of a bitch with a resistive touchscreen and no voice activation. Sadly like most new cars the thing is molded in so there's no easy way to put in an aftermarket replacement.

On my old RAV4 I replaced the radio with a cheap 100 $ unit and had all the features VW would charge me at least 1k to upgrade to (Bluetooth...). Afterwards the dash still looked fine. I know integrated is modern and it is sleek, but I feel like you could still make it so the radio is replaceable without completely loving up the look.

All I wanted in my car was an input I can control from the steerignwheel and not AUX. After over $1500 in parts including the next series version of the dash and AC hardware I got Bluetooth and MP3 CD. Only after I got all that poo poo sorted I found my ex-cop car had bluetooth all along and I would have been set without spending a dollar.

Some new cars now let you choose the automaker's OEM or the Apple and Google alternatives. And once you pick Apple or Google you're software is upgradable as long as they support your hardware. Which for Apple is usually 3 or 4 generations and with Android, well...

But even if you buy a phone as big as most built in units, it's either going to block your view of the road or your access to the radio and HVAC controls. And you're still missing the point that some people have a use for technology that you don't. I'd prefer a standard din radio myself, but some people, who are neither of us, are never going to replace the factory radio and just want to have a button they can press to get them home from the middle of nowhere and then have a screen they can read through their cataracts.

Like all I really want is a tablet in the radio slot that handles media and gps and doesn't tie internet in with things like "steering" or "brakes" and then separate physical controls for whatever. The best thing about using the phone is that it's not on the canbus or w/e with safety critical systems so no one can hack my airbags

Exactly, and pretty much any dash kit is going to make the aftermarket stereo look decent. The only time you're going to run into an issue installing an aftermarket deck is when the car has other features integrated into the factory stereo, like AC controls and whatnot, but I've only had one car that the stereo absolutely couldn't be replaced (Volvo S40). Most stereos can still be swapped out, even if it looks like it cannot be at first glance. The easiest way for someone to find out if they can swap their stereo is by going to crutchfield.com and entering in your make and model, and the website will tell you which decks will fit and what extras you will need for installation (dashboard kits, steering wheel control modules, etc.). The industry isn't as dead as some people here make it out to be.
