Around 2010 I had a flip phone that was spring loaded. I was a little self conscious opening it in public at first.

My wife had an e-ink phone that flipped two ways. Here's a video that shows it, it was pretty neat for the time.

I got real good at this lil move with flip phones where I'd toss it with a sharp wrist snap and it'd flip and spin in the air before landing open in my hand

worked with the generic-looking silver samsungs super well after the hinge had loosened up a bit

seriously. I still can't type on touchscreens without a ton of errors, I was much faster / more accurate on my old physical keyboard phones.

I held out using a blackberry for way too long. Had a nice job that bought me a first gen iphone and I just went right back to blackberry when I quit working there.

Were there any spring loaded slider phones other than the Samsung matrix one?

Supposedly the plan for the modern Nokia 8110 was to give it a spring loaded mechanism like the prop in the original Matrix but they scrapped that idea pretty early on bc it would've made the handset nearly an inch thicker.

The Nokia 7110 had a spring loaded slider.
One of the few phones I had which I do kinda miss.

Also the one I had was imported from Hong Kong and could write Chinese using basically 5 (I think) different strokes and then a menu of matching characters, which I thought was pretty impressive in terms of dictionary/auto-complete-type of thing.

(Not that I can read/write Chinese, so it may well have just been taunting me the entire time with what characters it suggested)

If that's what I'm thinking of, it's still a pretty standard way to write Chinese on phones.

Chinese characters (and Japanese kanji for that matter) are actually very systematic in how you write them (less so in how you say them or what they mean). You do specific strokes in specific orders, so after a few strokes it's pretty easy for a computer to guess what you want to write.

I had this exact same phone around 2003. I had a habit of repeatedly flipping it when bored, so the springs died and only stayed closed with the help of a rubber band. It was much less cool after that.

Yeah they're going into the storage box with the DAT drive and stuff. One day I'll have a little more space to set the 386, 486, pentium, pentium II machines with appropriate accessories. I only have three CRTs, though. I have an older serial mouse I like a lot more than those three ps/2 serial compatible mice.

I was an idiot and threw away my Nokia CRT monitor years ago. I could've had a complete Nokia Mikromikko 286 but nah need the space. (I didn't need the space.)

isn't the PS/2 connection for mice and keyboards still perfectly fine, assuming you still have one on your motherboard? those mice might not have good dpi or anything but they might still be serviceable for a mom computer

An USB adapter will also work fine.

I've had a few situations where a ps/2 keyboard was useful to get into the bios when a PC wouldn't boot far enough to turn on the USB ports.

Hell my midrange like 2018 Intel motherboard came with a PS/2 connection because some gamer pros swear it’s better than USB with less lag. And I’ve already used it a couple times.

I just bought a brand new x570 mobo this year and it has a single PS/2 port with split purple/green marking on it.

That board? the Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS

Yeah they still work, the issue is more that they've got physical balls and nobody wants to put with the maintenance on those any more. I had my mother set up with a yellow steelseries optical mostly because it was a nice color she liked and it was uncomplicated. My dad's got an MX Master and I'm sure he's never used half the buttons on it but he likes it.

I miss my 5190. I got a 6190 after it:

and in true old-Nokia tradition, it was rock solid and totally indestructible. I remember spending days trying to figure out how to upload custom carrier logos to it. Anyone remember custom carrier logos / boot up logos?
