If we're taking about ancient hand-held games, I give you this:

I played the gently caress out of this game. It's so simple, it's ridiculous, but in the higher "gear", it would kick your rear end.

I got one of those when I was 6. Loved that game. I also had the Battlestar Galactica and Football ones too. I think they cost about $25 back then. I should go look on eBay and see what they go for on there..

I had that too but completely forgot about it. Didn't love it as much as you. The slider controlled the rate of turbo (and maybe slow mo as the poster above said, but I forget).

On a similar note, this was my joystick of choice for Commodore 64.

I always thought it was a better/more comfortable design than the NES gamepad. Even had a trigger button under your index finger, which wasn't seen again for decades.

Those Epyx joysticks were awesome. Much more comfortable than the Atari ones to use.

I bought obsolete technology today! A local boy scout troop in one of the richest towns in CT collects donations and sells them at their annual tag sale, and I went in search of anything nifty looking. I was in line to get in and someone walked out with an Eames Chair, to give an idea.

The first one is some sort of printing press tool, I think it's a gauge for typeseting, but if anyone knows for sure I'd love to know. For $2, it's a nice shelf piece.

That's pretty cool. My dad and grandpa both worked for Goss for ~20 years. Unfortunately, neither are alive anymore so I can't ask about the tool...

Aftermarket car audio is slowly fading to nothing as even the budget segment of new cars come with decent speakers and aux-in/bluetooth/ipod integration from the factory nowadays. Nobody cares about the head unit any more, all you need is a way to connect your phone (and if you're over 60 maybe a radio).

My wife's 2003 Mazda 6 came with a stock in-dash 6 disc changer. The drat thing stopped ejecting CD's two years ago so she's been listening to the same ones since. A couple of weeks ago she rolled up a magazine to swat a bee on the dash and now the player doesn't work at all.

The service writer at the dealer suggested it might be cheaper to take it to a local stereo place and just have them replace it with a single disc unit. I stopped by for a quote and just parts alone was gonna be around $600 due to the replacement dash plate costing $200 (on Amazon, even!).

I'm not gonna fork out that much, so as a Plan B, I bought a stock one with the radio and changer included on Ebay for $110 shipped. The dealership guy is gonna go ahead and install it. He said they usually won't but since the other option was gonna be so expensive and he felt bad about the bad recommendation, he'll make an exception. I'm sure there will probably be a fair bit of labor costs involved, but at least the parts bill is only 1/6 of what it could have been otherwise.

Also an article from 1988 about the first gigabyte hard drive where they question that anyone would ever be able to fill it. :allears:

When I built my first Windows PC in 1996, I put in a 2.5GB hard drive and thought I'd never fill it up. Then MP3s happened.

Me too, and DCLite (Direct Connect) on the Mac, which was a cesspool of fakes, porn and drama.

I was a huge fan of WinMX. It seemed to have a huge following in Japan which is also where my favorite kind of music (80's metal) is still fairly popular. I got a lot of good rare stuff through it.

I guess one of the original developers launched a huge DDOS attack on it, rendering it virtually useless.

Possibly a mixture of both but probably the latter. My dad used be very computer smart and used to do the whole http thing until recently when I pointed it out that he didn't need to. Computer illiterate people I work with do the type google.com and search for https://www.facebook.com thing all the drat time

Part of the problem is that most browsers come set with Bing or Google as a default. I work at a Help Desk and the number of people who are completely incapable of just going straight to a website I am trying to direct them to vs. using a search engine first is absolutely maddening. If I'm doing remote support usually the first thing I do is shut that browser feature off.

I don't understand why you'd need a Sodastream or whatever in the first place. Then again I almost never drink soda so maybe I'm just not the target market.

My cousin and her husband are your stereotypical gamer geeks who subsist on nothing but microwaveable foods and soda. She's already got dentures at age 30 due to said diet.

She got a Sodastream for Christmas a couple years ago and excitedly remarked how that thing was going to save her around $60.00 per month.

Uhh.. wow.

I wish people would stop hoarding 2 dollar bills. Not for convenience or anything, I just think they look nice.

I haven't been there in years, but back in the nineties when I used to go to our local speedway a lot, change for beer was given in $2 bills and $0.50 pieces.

I would honest to god drive a 1995ish Olds Cutlass Supreme. My grandfather had one and I always loved how it looked.

My wife had one when we were dating/first married. Horrible, horrible car. It certainly looked nice. She had the "gold" edition that was the dark green with gold trim. Quality wise it was a giant piece of green poo poo. Constantly needed repairs and the repairs were at least $450 on up other than when the stupid electric radio antenna broke and I installed that myself after buying the replacement which was over $100.

I finally convinced her to get rid of it when the transmission locked up at 61000 miles. We sold it to the transmission shop for $3500 in non-running condition and used that money to put a down payment on a new Mazda 6 that she drove for 13 years.

There's a reason Oldsmobile doesn't exist any more - and that car is a prime example as to why.

I suspect that I stopped around 2014 when I got a smart phone for the first time. A few years prior (I wanna say 2007) I had a revelation that most of my CDs were maybe not rare, but uncommon and not easy to acquire, so whenever I wanted to listen to one in my car, I would just make a copy of it so I wouldn't care if someone stole my copied CDs. That particular car I had back then also had a habit of not ejecting CDs every time, so if a CDR stayed in there forever it also wasn't a big deal.

I do the same thing. Worked in a new/used CD shop from 1990-93 and acquired a pretty good collection of stuff - imports, bootlegs, etc. Lots of it out of print now. Better to burn a 10 cent disc for the car than risk damage/theft.
