...how does that work?

It's been about an hour since the last girl has had her private meeting with Ms Frost. Some went straight to their house, others explored the ground. The Home for Wayward Girls sits on a massive square mile plot of lushly forested and expertly manicured land. Surrounded by an elegant and strong twelve foot tall spiked wrought iron fence, the campus gives the impression on a well off college campus. One moderately sized brownstone building occupies the centre of campus, directly behind a minimalist white marble fountain. From your orientation packet, this is the building that your classes will be taking place in. It's currently locked, but anyone looking in the first floor windows can see small cozy rooms that look more like lounges than class rooms. Twelve plush leather chairs are clumped in loose semi circles, surrounding a heavy, well polished desk. Each chair has a small end table next to it. Behind the desk on the wood panelled wall is fifty inch OLED television, which one can only assume to be used in lessons.

Scattered around the main building are the six student houses. Nobody is inside yes, except for the other students poking around. The House Mothers must being in the auditorium getting ready for the Welcome Speech. Entering your house, which the helpfully coloured door tells you is the Blue house, your gaze is drawn to the well appointed living room. Bookshelves crammed with an array of literature line the far wall. A small stereo system rests inside a glowing, zebra-wood cabinet. Above the stone fireplace rests a rather large gold framed mirror, reflecting the entire room. It's seeing the mirror that reminds you of what you don't see. A television.

Moving back out of the living room to the main foyer, you walk straight past a small bathroom under the stair way and into the kitchen. It's modern, if small, a mix of stainless steel and marble. The cabinets, a strange swirled wood that resembles the brown and black marble counter tops, are empty. Looking through the orientation manual you see that all meals are taken in the school's cafeteria. So the kitchen must really just be for after-hour snacking. There's a locked door off of the short hallway leading from the kitchen, which you guess is probably the House Mother's room. Curious as to what your room must look like, you head up stairs only to be met with disappointed. The rooms are well appointed and tastefully decorated. But they are rather small. You couldn't call it a cell, but a twin sized bed, closet, desk (one not nearly as nice as Ms Frost's or the ones you saw in the classrooms) and a window doesn't really seem that great when compared with everything else. And still no television! At least, you think as you open the door leading your own private bathroom, they did install a full sized bathtub.

Finally it's time for the Welcoming Ceremony. You make your way towards the auditorium, a nicely sized building a bit further away from the main building than the dorms. Walking down the cobble stone paths, admiring the decorative shrubbery and the mass of trees in the distance, you can see the gymnasium to one side of the auditorium. The brochure says that inside are tennis courts, a weights room, a swimming pool, a basketball court and even some climbing walls. To the other side is a building that must be the movie theatre. With no TVs, you think that building is probably going to see a lot of action. Falling in step with the other girls, some talking and laughing, others clearly nervous and keeping to themselves, you can't help but feel a little awed. There's about dozens of other girls here, thirty five in all after a quick head count, all filing into the empty seats in the auditorium. All mutants. Some are weird colours or shapes, a couple even have wings! But they're all like you, mutants who got caught up (and caught) in something they maybe shouldn't have. It's comforting, strange and scary all at the same time. And maybe, if you're being honest, a little depressing. After all, you're not that special anymore. Not that unique. Or maybe that's comforting too.

You take a seat, noting that there are a lot more seats than there are students. Looking down onto the stage you see six women, plus the Headmisstress. Ms. Frost, clad in a white pant suit that's just a little too low cut for propriety, is already standing, tapping an impeccably manicured nail on the podium. She says nothing, thinks nothing, but within seconds the assembled girls quiet down. A girl with blue skin near the front lets out a burst of nervous laughter and clamps her hands over her mouth, her skin turning purple in embarrassment.

Oddly, Ms Frost doesn't chastise her, instead gives her a warm smile for the briefest of moments before snapping back into her icy demeanour. “Welcome to the Home for Wayward Girls. I am very glad to see that you have all arrived on time. In our quest to mould you into…” Maybe, just maybe, you detect the slightest hint of sarcasm in this next bit, “…fine upstanding members of society, you will be held to the strictest of schedules. We are not cruel, you will have free time after your classes. But from eight am until seven pm, you will be treated similar to the prisoners you almost were.”

She pauses, her penetrating blue eyes scanning the audience as she lets it sink in that they are still prisoners.

“As such, no one is allowed off the grounds. Several of you have travel powers. If you use them to attempt to leave the campus, you will forfeit your sentence here. Instead, I will personally place a call to Hank Pym and have you shrunk down so that he may place inside one of those ant farms he uses as 'super-prisons'. I am sure that none of you are daft enough to believe that I am, in anyway, joking.” Her tone suggests that anyone who is thinking that may be getting shipped off to the ant farm immediately.

Again, there is a slight warming of her face, her lips twitch in a rare smile. “Now that you know the bad, let me tell you about the good. Myself and the House Mothers will be teaching you not just mundane scholastic subjects, but about yourselves, your powers, and human and mutant society. While you do not have many privileges right now, you will have the chance to earn special rights. Because life, especially for mutants, is a struggle for survival. For acceptance. And only by banding together can we accomplish our goals, whatever they may be.” That sounds ominous.

“You have been grouped into Houses. Your house is your family, your... team, if you prefer the 'superhero' parlance. You will earn points for your house by performing well in your school work, any extra-curricular activities you join; and we will post a schedule for these next week once you have all had time to settle in, as well as your poise and demeanour. Xavier's school may not care if young mutants act like uncultured brats, but I will be holding all of you to a higher standard. So conduct yourselves with dignity, treat your teachers and fellow students with respect and you may well be rewarded for it.”

She pauses, a half smile spreads across her lips and stays there for maybe an entire second this time. “The first prize will be a television set. Accumulate one hundred points for your house and you will earn one. Any house which has not earned the points by next week will lose the opportunity forever, even when they finally pass the one hundred mark. Goals have time tables. It's not enough to want or even know how to gain something, but you must be able to do so in realistic amount of time. You will do well to remember about teamwork. An individual can accomplish much, especially a talented one. But a team of talented individuals, working as a single unit with a single goal, can accomplish much more in much less time.”

Frost relaxes a bit, it's not that she was nervous, you can't even imagine what would make this woman nervous. It's more like she's entered into a more... casual, if the word can be applied to her, state.

“Not only myself, but all of our House Mothers were once like you.” She chuckles. “I'd actually venture a guess that we were 'better' than you as all of us have led a successful career as a 'super-villain'. But we have all come to the side of angels. It was a long, hard road, filled with obstacles that, even now, we have not fully overcome. Fighting side by side with people we once placed in absurdly intricate death-traps or violated in one fashion or another. Let us just say that some of our new allies do not entirely trust us. This is what we are hoping to help you girls avoid. The lack of trust. From your friends, your families, and society at large. If you decide that you want to use your mutant powers to fight for others, then at least we can ensure that you do not face the same distrust and, sometimes, hatred that we have.”

With a slight clearing of her throat, Frost is all business again. “Now. Let me introduce the House Mothers.“

“Leading Blue House is Tabitha 'Slider' Caida.” The woman who stands up is a petite blond with a rumpled, punky hair cut. She looks almost as if she could be a student. She smiles, it looks very natural on her face, and gives a big wave with both hands to the assembled girls. “I'm really happy to have this chance! Go Blue House!” You wonder if your House Mother was a cheerleader at one point.

Ms. Frost shoots Tabitha a very un-genuine smile and continues, “Leading Green House is Zoe 'Crystalina' Ycasiano.”

What you could be forgiven for thinking was an immaculately carved statue of ruby stands. Her voice is beautiful, a harmonic medley of chimes, high and low, that blend together and echo forth into the room. “Green house will perform well, or else I will be very disappointed.”

As she sits back down, Ms. Frost announces the next woman. “The leader of Gold House is Jennifer 'Badger Badger' Lang.”

If Tabitha Caida was petite, Jennifer is minuscule. She has pure white hair cut short against her head and sparkling green eyes. At maybe four foot eight, she hops out of her chair with an unconscious grace. Though even standing she was still shorter than the other sitting House Mothers. “We have a hard time ahead of us Gold House, but I know that if we work together we can do anything!”

“Leading Orange House is Dominga 'Night Serpent' Lopez,” Frost continues after Jennifer Lang hops back into her seat. “I expect Orange House to work hard and come out on top of these challenges.” Dominga is tall with jet back black hair tied loosely behind her, stretching down towards the centre of her back. She caries herself with the relaxed ease of someone who not only knows they can take down everyone around them, but has absolutely no need to prove it.

Dominga settles back into her chair, crossing her legs. “Purple House will be lead by Heather 'Blunt Trauma' Sanders.”

Heather is standing before Frost even finished speaking. She's amazonian in stature, almost eight feet tall, but proportioned like a teenage boy's dream. Something that is clear for all to see in her tight blue and purple 'outfit'. It looks like something almost skimpier than the Headmistress would feel comfortable wearing. But it does show off how well muscled, yet still feminine, her limbs are. “I'm going to do everything I can to make sure you kids follow the rules and don't screw up.” Her voice is not friendly. You're pretty sure you dodged a bullet by not being placed in Purple House.

“Finally, Red House will be lead by Valerie 'Professor Gloom' Gloom,” Ms Frost says after Heather finishes glaring at the crowd and sits down.

Valerie almost seems obscured, looking closely you can see that thin tendrils of shadow are constantly radiating off her body in random patterns. She has black hair and pale skin that is far too thin, she looks like she spends more time in a laboratory than outside. Almost distractedly she rattles off, “Um, Red House! Yes, we will... hmmm. We will be the... be the champions! But don't stomp the bleachers. You'll lose points.”

Ms. Frost just has her eyes shut, almost as if she's praying for Valerie to just disappear. Once the self styled 'Professor' sits back down, after Tabitha gently pulls her back after about a minute of her standing there, silent, blankly staring at nothing in particular, Ms Frost says, with a heavy sigh, “Remember. Teamwork. Respect each other. Work hard. Accomplish your goals. The House Mothers and I have a bit of work to do. We are trusting you to return to your houses. Take this time to get to know each other. Remember, you are now family.”

With that, Frost claps her hands briskly. It's time to go.

...how does that work?
What's the best way to send 30 odd girls into hysterics? By covering the floor in thousands upon thousands upon thousands of tiny little spiders, it turns out. Some girls had found their houses already and were out of the auditorium, but more than a few were still inside. And upon seeing the black wave of spiders crawl across auditorium, from front to back at an inexorable crawl, most of those who hadn't left already proceed to do so at some pace. And with much screaming. A few stay in the building still though, perhaps hearing the tiny trill of the bugs and being more perplexed than anything as the mass makes its way to the back of the hall.

...how does that work?
Though not all the other girls had been chased out by spiders, it was made clear that they were looking for Blue House. And, not being in Blue House, they had decided to leave the hall to them anyway. This leaves the five girls at the back, and one girl still sitting in her seat closer to the stage. It might be a bit obvious to Sarah now who the sixth member of the house was.

Robodog

...how does that work?
With the resounding meep from Cecilia, the decision is reached to get back to the house and continue any further introductions there. Directly outside the auditorium there are a few scuff marks in the grass alongside the path. And a couple of scorch marks in the path itself. Possibly a result from the earlier stampede to escape the mass of spiders. But besides this there are no signs of the other houses outside, the other girls must have had the same idea to go investigate their houses. Or wanted to go check out the classrooms or facilities a little closer. Some voices can be heard echoing out across the courtyard, but Blue House reach Blue House without meeting another house.

The girls find that the house is still as empty as it was when they each popped their head in earlier, evidently the House Mothers are still meeting with Ms. Frost. The well appointed living room strikes the group once again as they enter, very much putting gilded in gilded cage. In the middle of the room is a large sofa and a couple of single seats, all looking very much in style with the rest of the living room and quite comfy. Those that check out the book shelf (Cecilia) find it filled with classical literature spanning every culture on earth that has produced books of some type or another. Though the zebrawood cabinet housing the stereo only serves to emphasise the lack of a television.

...how does that work?
Seizing attention away from this very delicate moment, the blue door flies inward with a thud. As all of Blue House turns to look at what caused the commotion, they can see a figure outlined in the fading evening twilight. It's Tabitha 'Slider' Caida, her pixie cut blonde hair even more mussed than it was at the Welcoming Speech and loaded down with binders, papers and books.

Seeing the girls in the living room, all staring at her and the door on account of the rather loud thud, she smiles and shrugs with just a hint of embarrassment. "Sorry, girls. Lots of last minute preparation going on today." She tells them, readjusting the stacked up papers in her arms. "This place and what it represents is hugely important to a lot of people."

Kicking the door closed again in a somewhat impressive display of balance, she comes into the living room. Dropping her stacks of administrative materials into an empty chair, she takes a bit of a deep breath. "So, congratulations on being selected to be a student here. Hopefully you picked up the tidbit during the assembly that I and the rest of your teachers also ended up on the wrong side of law. So, in a way, we're all here together." She smiles, which looked like a very natural expression for the young woman. "Beats a cell, right?"

"You can call me Tabby here." Tabby tells the girls first of all. "But some of the other House Mothers might be a little stricter in their classes and you can be docked points for being disrespectful and everything." She warns them in advance. "So when we're in class or on the grounds, it's best to just say 'Ms. Caida'. Even if it does makes me feel like my mum."

And the whole room was deadly quiet, not exactly the response she was expecting. "Did I interrupt something?" Tabby raises an eyebrow and asks.

Tabby sits as well, sliding onto the arm of the chair she dumped her papers into. "I know today might have been a little much, but we are here to help and support you girls. And we're going to be here for each other too, like Ms. Frost said we're like a big blue family." She sounds quite earnest with it. "And I don't bite, you know."

Robodog
Oct 22, 2004

...how does that work?
"Well Sarah, I'm sure you've figured out that even though the school is beautiful and all it's still a prison. And we're all prisoners here, only Ms. Frost has free rein to come and go as she wishes, there's no getting around that. But we're not here to slap a nullifier collar on you and lock you away forever, we want to give you girls the opportunity for a second chance."

"The theory we're testing out is that most crimes committed by young mutants are a result of those mutants having been tormented by their non-powered peers; or just not having good control over their powers, leading them to lash out in anger or fear. Some even commit crimes because having these powers almost acts like a drug and pushes them over the edge."

"By training you, the House Mothers are doing a form of community service and you girls are learning how to fit back into society as mutants. If this school experiment works, it could become the model for how new mutants are treated. You get your powers, you come to this school to train them while getting a top notch education, move back out into the world. Or, if it works out, segue into the X-Men or Mutantes Sans Frontiers for aid missions to war torn areas or disaster zones." Tabby explains in one long spiel, her head lolling back once she had finished. "It's a little long for a mission statement, but we're basically all here to learn from each other and help make up for our mistakes."

"At the end of the school year everything is being reviewed, including how you girls have progressed and reacted to the programme." She lifts her head back up to tell Sarah. "If you've reacted well and displayed a clear improvement over the school year, and Ms. Frost thinks you're no longer an active danger to society, you'll be given the option to move out if you want to. If you haven't, you'll probably stay on for the next year. And this is all presuming the school isn't reduced to rubble halfway through the year." Tabby might have been joking with that, but the way she shakes her head and sighs kinda points to the opposite. "You don't want to know how many contingencies we have for the school being reduced to rubble."

Watching Rickie paint herself, Tabby's mood lifts at the sight. "That's the attitude." She smiles. "I like your enthusiasm, Rickie. There's going to be a lot of inter-house competition, so the sooner we can get into the spirit the better. I want Blue House to win!"

Tabby nods at Anna's explanation, looking over to the shy Cecilia. "Is this about your powers, Cecilia?"

Robodog
Oct 22, 2004

...how does that work?
Tabby slides off her chair and walks over to Cecilia, sitting down on the arm of Cecilia's chair so she can look her face to face. "This is the last place you need to be scared about your powers, honey." She tells her quietly, putting a reassuring hand on her hiked-up knees. "The whole point of the school is to help you learn about your powers and understand how they work. We're going to help you get some control over your powers so you can use them the way you want to. Okay?"

Robodog
Oct 22, 2004

...how does that work?
"But you're allowed to use your powers here too." Tabby assures Cecilia. "If you try and hide them you'll never get to know them, and it's a lot easier to be scared of what we don't know than what we understand. You don't need to be afraid of your powers, Cecilia." She gives her a hopefully encouraging smile.

The louder, more angry discussion of political prisoners kinda forces its way into Tabby's and Cecilia's talk. "It's mostly based on how you've progressed across the school term, Ms. Frost just has veto." She mildly corrects Sarah. "This is her experiment after all. And if she just rubber stamped everybody and then someone ran off to wipe Tucson off the map, it would look really bad on everybody. And kinda defeats the whole point of the school."

"Actually," Tabby turns her head to Anna. "A couple of the House Mothers were with the Brotherhood, so yeah." She sort of shrugs. "Mutant supremacy in the face of discrimination and bigotry isn't exactly a hard sell, but feeding into the idea that it's all 'Muties vs. Flatscans' is only going to end up hurting a lot of people."

Once again, Tabby sniggers as Rickie lightens the mood. "It's no skin off my nose, but it comes under 'poise'. Try to keep it PG-13 in class or you might lose points."

"We'll be getting to introductions and why we're heres in a little bit, Crystal." Tabby tells the Texan, but her attention is most decidedly taken by what Sarah said at the moment. "…you do know that he is a Holocaust survivor, right?"

Robodog
Oct 22, 2004

...how does that work?
"Yes. Magneto's Jewish, and he lived through the Holocaust." The lack of that easy smile on Tabby's face just serves to confirm she wasn't making it up. "He was really there when the Nazis were rounding up Jews because the state dictated it, locking them up in concentration camps, and murdering them by the millions. And that's exactly why he's taken the actions that he has." She directs this almost entirely at Sarah. "He has seen genocide firsthand and believes that the only way to prevent the exact same thing happening to mutantkind is to fight back."

Robodog
Oct 22, 2004

...how does that work?
"If the school experiment fails then it will only feed into the media line and public perception that mutants are all dangerous and need to be registered. And 'Muties vs. Flatscans' is only going to end up hurting a lot of people." She repeats herself, having left Cecilia's chair and flopped back onto her own. It's punctuated by a heavy sigh, Tabby staring up at the ceiling for a good few moments before looking back to her house. "Christ. This is getting kinda heavy for first day getting to know each other, huh?" She asks the rhetorical question. "Let's just save this for Society class tomorrow, it's made for discussing this sort of crap."

Of course, that left a bit of silence as the topic of discussion was postponed. "You girls hungry?" Tabby decides to try and move away from the previous subject decisively. "Pizza?" She suggests.

"The cafeteria's still having the last few bits hooked up and finished off, so it's not quite ready to use yet." Their House Mother explains. Mentally taking the orders, Tabby raises a momentary eyebrow at the request from Tara. But then she smiles. "Hey, that's why the school has an expense account right?" She pulls a red smartphone of some kind from her pocket and phones in the order to Mean Streets Pizza. Tabby then picks up her files and crap from the chair and turns to put it away properly in her room. "Keep an eye on the time, if it's longer than thirty minutes we get it for free!"

Twenty eight minutes later and the four pizzas are laid out on the kitchen bench, piping hot and filling the room with the glorious smell of pizza pie. Hawaiian, veggie, pepperoni and ground beef with jalapenos (no mushrooms) and the Everything (mozzarella, mushrooms, onions, pineapple, kalamata olives, capsicum, peppers, aubergine, ham, sausage, bacon, ground beef, pepperoni and anchovies on a garlic and herb tomato sauce base). And the free garlic bread, wrapped up in tin foil, if anybody cared for it. Tabby takes a couple slices of the veggie on a paper plate before slumping back in the seat which formerly held her notes. Her hair is still a little damp from the shower she took while the food was being delivered, and had changed into a loose fitting tee emblazoned with a faded Jaws poster and a pair of gray sweat shorts. She really doesn't look that much older than any of you.

"Mmhmm." Tabby mumbles in a positive manner, mouth full of pizza. "Didn't realise how hungry I was." She says when her mouth was less full of pizza. "I've been in meetings with Ms. Frost just about all day, haven't had a chance to really eat anything."

Tara's revelation gets some laughs out of Tabby. "I wasn't going to say anything." She tells Tara as she nibbled on her own slice. "But it looks like something you eat on a dare." And then to Sarah. "Looks more like the Dalai Lama to me." All smiles, she balances her plate on the arm of the chair so she could get up and get a glass of water.

"No loving joke, I knew a guy back in Chicago who could control cheese!" She excitedly declares amongst some giggles, coming back with her drink. "The whole thing went right to his head, I don't know what he was thinking. He tried robbing a couple Dairy Queens but didn't know, like, half the stuff in there isn't even made with real milk. He ended up with a fine for spraying milkshakes all over the place but that was about it. I think he's at a dairy taking lactose out of everything so lactose-intolerant people can have it. Nice guy."

"Yikes. It's bad enough with all the expectations you put on yourself without the folks joining in. Talk about pressure, huh?" Tabby winces slightly, looking sympathetic. "Well, it sounds like you'll have much more freedom to do what you want here. And you can get house points out of extra-curriculars as well, so bonus."

With the puns, jokes, and growing camaraderie among the Blues, Tabby smiles to herself. She might have been about to say something, but Tara excusing herself interrupts it. "Tara? If you could stay?" She asks the spiders girl before she fled upstairs, then looking to all the girls. "Now we're going to be spending a lot of time together, naturally. We're all in here together. We'll get to know and love and hate each other like sisters." Hopefully hair pulling would be kept to a minimum. "Ms. Frost has files on all of you and I've gone through them, but frankly it's a bit bullshit just going off what she thinks about all of you when we're actually all here now. So, it would be nice if we could talk about why we're here and what we hope to gain from this experience."

Tabby nods as Anna explains herself. "She took all the credit and all the applause and left you out in the cold." She surmises. "I'm pretty sure everybody's been mad about something like that happening to them." She gives a quick look around to the other girls. "I know I have. But getting mad when you don't really know about your powers yet, let alone how to control them properly, is probably the biggest way stuff like this happens. Especially with you guys, young mutants who just find out they have powers." She explains more generally.

"But this is why we have power classes, to help you understand your powers and get them under control." She tells the Blues. "Not only will that help stop powers going off accidentally, but it'll also prepare you in case you actually do need to use them." She smiles. "Not teaching you girls how to defend yourselves against a rogue Sentinel or two would just be stupid now, wouldn't it?"

Tabby looks back to Anna specifically. "You didn't necessarily want what happened to happen, but you did want to something to happen to her. Right? Because she left you with nothing from all the hard work, didn't care about it either, and she deserved it?"

"Holograms and robots." Tabby notes to Sarah. "Professor Gloom has all that stuff set up." She further, tersely explains. "And we won't be sparring between houses until way later. You don't have similar powers, and who you are put with may be unfair, but Ms. Frost thinks it's an important lesson to teach you girls." By the use of the Headmistresses name, Tabby perhaps betrays she doesn't totally agree.

"Right now all you could think you could do is paint a Sentinel, Rickie." Their House Mother corrects. "But who knows what you'll find out you can do given a bit of time and self-realisation!" She takes a bite of her remaining slice, grinning at Rickie's little cloud doodles. "Or you could go be the next Banksy. Both good."

Anna might duck and weave, but Tabby keeps her eyes nice and level. "Now, going all Tonya Harding because the lead is upstaging is overreacting to say the least. You shouldn't have done that Anna, obviously, And you were lucky that it was only the hall that got really damaged. But things just got out of hand." She leaves Anna to escape her look finally and turns it to the group more generally. "And this is exactly why we, as Mutants, need to be aware of our powers. Now powers are good. We have powers and that's natural. And we should use our powers. You girls should never be scared or ashamed that you're Mutants." She tells them, sounding quite adamant about it. "But the fact of the matter is a Mutant can get mad and break a school hall all on her own. And people can get scared about that, rightly or wrongly, every time something like that hits the news. Now nobody else is going to do us any favours, so it's up to us to realise what we can do and to keep our lids on."

"…which is something you would have benefitted from as well, Crystal." Tabby says, turning her gaze over to her as she gives out a bit of her story. "Just in case we don't know, your dad is who, Crystal?"

Tabby nods. "Yeah, he did deserve it. The guy's dog-whistling, and it's people like him that are driving this idea that it's all 'Us vs. Them' for dealing with Mutants. And being who he is he has a lot more influence about it than normal. He's terrible." A pause "Um, no offense." To Crystal, that was. The Texan Attorney-General could shove it.

"But by wrecking his press conference all you did was get yourself in trouble on camera and prove your dad right." She points out. "People are going to see that and see that a Mutant did it and that's a far as they'll look into it. Being a Mutant can even turn a good christian girl like his daughter into a dangerous menace, what a brave man to stick to his guns, blah blah blah." She puts on a bit of a southern accent for the last bit, putting forth the bigot on the streets perception of events.

"If you kept your head and calmed down you could have really hurt him and his position, and not just wrecked his presser." Tabby explains to her, with a little grin on her face. "You could have used some of his press contacts to get a letter out explaining it. You could have started a rumour that he had a Mutant daughter and watch the sharks circle. Hell, maybe you could've held your own press conference and tell all." Tabby shrugs on the exact method, but she seems sure on the general plan. "Nothing bad would have happened to you, certainly nothing like being arrested, and all the trouble wold have been on him."

"This is why it's really important to know when it's the right time to power up, and when it's better not to."

"Sorry." Tabby apologises, sounding genuinely like she didn't want to upset Crystal. "I'm just trying to say that just because we do have powers, doesn't mean the best answer is always use our powers. It might be the easiest or quickest answer, but that doesn't always mean the best." She punctuates this by taking another bite of her vegie pizza.

"But I guess while we are on the topic of politics driving people to try and wreck stuff." She turns to face the local political prisoner. "Sarah? Can you tell us about what happened?"

...how does that work?
Tabby listens to Sarah as she explains her side of the story. She nods, mm-hmm's, and is generally attentive before she says anything about it. And it totally wasn't so she could finish off her slice. "Now this is something a lot of people fear." She starts with. "Mutants developing powers and right away going out to use them because it all went to their heads. The idea of a mutant using their powers to do whatever they want scares some people, even if it isn't really true. But for some kids having that sort of power just suddenly given to them is too much, and they just go wild with it." This all said, she goes to address Sarah more directly. "I'm not saying you did that Sarah, but you didn't exactly wait to think on your plan before you dove in head first either."

Tabby leans back a little bit more into the chair. "Now I'm sure Ms. Frost went over all of this with you so I'm not going to, but there are more than just rich people on the stock market. There are smaller, not evil companies, people trying to get a nest egg going, a lot of pension funds rely on stocks, blah blah." She seems quite sure on that not going over it much point. "If you managed your plan with your level of control on your abilities, you would have hurt a lot more than just the rich old white men. Who would have been the ones best able to manage it, anyway."

She turns a bit more to the whole group. "Now. Just because you were frustrated and felt you had to do something doesn't mean you needed to use your powers. Using your powers pretty much always escalates the situation, as a rule, so if you're dead set on it you really do need to think about what you are going to do and be aware of the consequences from it. Need to be ready to cop it if it goes wrong, too. In here that might just be losing house points, but for outside… well, we've all been arrested right?" She smiles. "But yeah. It could easily mean being arrested and locked up, or getting into a big fight and getting hurt. Or, in Sarah's case, be detained on terrorism charges." She looks more directly at Sarah again. "Despite what you think about it or I think about it or whatever, under the law what you were trying to do was terrorism. And trust me, you don't want to be arguing ethics in a nullifier collar on the Raft."

Attention seems to be turned to Tara while Tabby was doing this. She waits until the other girls had finished asking about some more detail. "If you're not ready you don't need to share it with us, Tara." Tabby assured Tara.

...how does that work?
"Would have is not as good as did." Tabby after school specials Sarah, taking her death stare in stride. To be fair if Sarah was looking at somebody with a pacemaker or something then she could kinda have a death stare.

Tabby watches Rickie paint Tara's little scene, her ever present cheerfulness coming to the fore. "There's no art class here, it's kinda an extra-curricular, but we do have a room with art supplies." She tells Rickie with a smile, enjoying her little pictures. "Easels, different types of paints, kilns and clay, even stone and metal for sculpting or welding. Ms. Frost doesn't believe in forcing art education onto people, because true artists will seek instruction or just experiment on their own." She obviously repeats what the Headmistress had proclaimed. "You so need to check it out."

Then Rickie goes on to tell about what led her to get in trouble and end up here. She nods along and listens as she goes on about running away from home and crossing state borders, leaving a few minor offences in her wake. "Now I'm sure you know stealing and tagging aren't good or legal." She starts off to the painter in a very rote way. "But really, you didn't do anything wrong." She takes a bit of a detour from it. "Some cities are getting mad about graffiti but it's such a minor crime. And if it was anything like what you're doing here you could probably get off on calling it street art. Works for Banksy." She shrugs in a good natured way. "The shoplifting is a bit worse but honestly, the worst you would have gotten from that, being so far away from home, was getting taken back there. I know you didn't want that, but next to getting arrested it isn't quite so bad."

She puts her empty pizza plate on the arm of the chair and leans forward a bit. "And you were painting the house with permission so there was absolutely nothing wrong with what you were doing when the police rocked up. Up to the whole 'panicking and spray-painting the cops' bit, you weren't doing anything wrong at the house." Tabby asserts. "It's just a fact of life that in this country, you are going to come up against people in authority that are bigots. Cops. People in government." A quick look over to Crystal. "Whatever. Outside of joining up with the Brotherhood, which is a very bad thing none of you should ever do, we can only influence public opinion by showing people we're just like them and can use our powers to help people. Be that with the X-Men, or Mutantes Sans Frontier, whatever." Tabby looks back to Rickie. "You should have cooperated with the officers even if one of them was a dick," She tells her. "…but if a pig called me a mutie bitch he'd faceplant in the gutter in about two second flat." She chuckles. "But you have the right attitudes about ending up here." Tabby smiles. "So long as you are willing to learn, you'll get a lot out of staying here."

Just like when the attention turned to Tara's reason, Tabby seems to step in when Rickie tries to poke and prod about Cecelia's reason for being here. "Don't bug her about it, Rickie." She tells the painter. "You don't need to share it either if you don't want to, Cecelia." She tells her with all the authority imbued in her by being a House Mother.

Their House Mother listens as Cecelia braves her fears and shares what saw her brought to the school. "It's good that you feel safe enough to share." She tells her with an encouraging smile. "And you're allowed to write if you want to, you don't need to ask first. This is a safe place for you to get to know your powers." Tabby assures the young girl.

"The papers aren't always true, Cecilia. You should try to not pay any attention to them." Tabby tries to assuage Cecelia's guilt, speaking in a softer and more gentle tone than her usual cheer ascribes. "Ms. Frost suspects the media just beat you and what happened up because it was a juicy mutant story. And she doesn't think your powers work the way they said they do."

She leans in closer to Cecilia. "In a couple of weeks, once we're all settled in, she wants to have a few private sessions with you about your writing." Tabby tells Cecilia with a small smile. "If that's alright with you."

"And some of the girls are here just because of how their powers manifested." Tabby tells the group once Tara had said her piece and gone for another slice of the monster pizza. "I do know how you feel, Tara. Thank you for sharing with us." She tells her quietly as she walks past to get her pizza.

"The nature of Tara's powers make them difficult to control. And the way she discovered them was quite traumatic for her. This is unfortunately common for young mutants, and maybe the most important reason for this experiment to succeed. Help and understanding in a safe and nurturing environment is far better for Tara and girls like her than being locked in a cell was." The House Mother seems emphatic talking about the issue, even if you didn't agree with her totally you couldn't question her belief in it.

Tabby looks to the girl in question. "Ms. Frost is arranging with your therapist for your sessions to continue." She tells Tara with a small smile. "It wouldn't benefit anybody to just cut them off because you've come here. Now this can't be in person, but you'll be able to video conference with him on Sundays."

Tara seemed to change subjects rather fluidly, so Tabby followed suit. "Or maybe, 'Blue House kicks rear end in the first week and wins a T.V'." Tabby suggests with a big smile. "But then again, you guys so don't need Cecilia's powers to do that!" You get the feeling she probably led the rah-rah on her cheer squad.

"And if something… comes up, he'll be available for you during the week too. But he thinks being here with other mutants will help you a lot." She offers with a hopeful smile.

Which Sarah tries her best to sarcasm away, though Tabby keeps a small smile on her face. "You know, keeping a positive attitude does wonders Sarah." She tries to advise. "If you act like this place is the Raft then you're not going to enjoy anything here, even if you want to. But I was on the Raft, and believe me this school isn't anything like it." Tabby tells her with all seriousness. "We're trying to stop you girls from experiencing anything even close to that. We might be strict compared to the schools you used to go to, but we're giving you a second chance." She exhorts. "And you're only here because you wanted to be, remember." She directs more to Sarah again.

"But like Miss Frost said." Tabby turns to the question asked. "If you do well in your school work, or well in any extra-cirriculars you decide to take, you'll get points for it. And as Miss Frost holds you all to her own standards, you'll also get points for being genteel and ladylike and having poise and all that." Tabby doesn't seem like she'd get too many points if she had to live up to that. "Ultimately it's down to the discretion of the House Mothers though, so takes on the guidelines might differ a bit between us."

"For more individual and creative activities, it's mostly just based off of your own work, study and commitment. It's kinda subjective, but so long as you're doing well in it you'll be fine. But for sports teams they aren't based on houses, just whoever signs up for it. You might end up having to play against each other!"

"Look, so long as you keep a cool head and act respectful to one another, and to the House Mothers and Ms. Frost, you'll be fine." Tabby assures them. "There's no dress code and you don't need to curtsy or anything like that. Ms. Frost just has her own ideas about manners and demeanour and all that crap. If you live up to them you'll get more points, if you want."

Without a moment's notice, Tara grabs the dictionary and heads up to the above floor. And she goes through her routine effortlessly. She had done it so many times before now, she didn't even need to think about it. Her body knew what she was expected to do and did it. Except that now her body was made of spiders. And she was out of practice by some months. And maybe that was why she suddenly slips, looses her footing, and tumbles off the railing!

And seems to suddenly stop, just a few inches away from landing neck-first on the hard wooden floor. Attention of all the girls was on Tara while she performed, and Tara as she fell, but breaking their eyes off of her they can see Tabby standing up, her hand pointed out at the mid-air Tara. To the spider girl it felt like she was falling through air, then diving through water, then stuck in glue, and then the glue hardening so much that she couldn't move and her clothes were pulled tight; all in a split second.

Tara hangs there in the air for a few seconds, before she slowly starts to come to the ground again and touches down quite gently. Then Tabby dashes over and kneels down next to her. "Tara, are you alright!?"

Tabby helps Tara get back up, watching her cautiously. "Please be more careful. You could've really hurt yourself." She implores. "If you wanna try it the gym's set up to handle gymnastics. And accidental falls." The free movement and ease of walking away eases Tabby's concerns, though. "I can control friction, I made you fall through something like wet concrete. Sorry if it felt weird." She explains.

When the girls turn things quickly to discussing art, Tabby excuses herself and goes to her room. When she returns she is holding papers in one hand. "Starting an art club would show leadership and initiative. And they're both total point getters." Tabby smiles. "Now with Tara almost cracking her head I think we should think about calling it a night. But first…"

"Gym is with Ms. Sanders. Literature is Ms. Lang. Ms. Ycasiano takes maths. Science is with Ms. Lopez. Professor Gloom has powers class, and I take society." Tabby explains as she hands out the timetables to the girls. "You see every other house every day, but you don't have every subject with every other house. Except Gold House. "My time to share, is it?" Tabby smiles a little back to Rickie, looking a bit embarrassed. She runs both her hands through her short, unruly hair and lightly pulls at the tufts sticking through her fingers. "Pretty much the same way you guys got here. Ms. Frost found me and offered me a second chance. And I grabbed it with both hands." Tabby obliquely answers. "But for how I got there in the first place?" She more directly addresses, sighing.

"I got my powers in high school, around the same age as you guys. I was lucky that it wasn't obvious, at first people were just slipping and falling around me for no reason. Sometimes things would just fall off of shelves and stuff like that. It wasn't until I kinda just started skating down asphalt roads in my gym shoes that I realised that something was up about me and friction."

Grinning just like the school girl she wasn't that far out of being, Tabby's eyes are wide with excitement. "It was awesome! Like, I bet I know how you felt the first time you found out you could fly." She obviously directs at Anna. "But, of course, I started using my powers to my own advantage. I was a cheerleader, no surprise, but I was in a very competitive school. I was strong and a good gymnast and had a great smile… well, actually I still am all those things. But uh, I was only a sophomore, and those varsity girls were older and really just plain better than me. I wasn't going to get onto the varsity squad. You know, until they started to fall down doing flips and dropping feet in the a pyramid. I'm so lucky no one got really hurt."

Tabby shakes her head. "So, with me using it every drat day that didn't even last a year before people got suspicious and started harassing my family about me being a dangerous mutant freak. So... I showed them exactly how dangerous my powers were. I was already as fast as a car skating and I was a lot more manoeuvrable, so during rush hour I skated against traffic and every expensive car I saw went off the road and crashed. Into trees, houses, other cars. I still had enough self control to slow those cars down enough that no one got killed, but there were broken bones and everything."

Her enduring smile fades into a vague sort of frown, and she looks down into her lap. "Of course, my parents freaked the gently caress out. My little brother hid under his bed because he was afraid of me. I was going to just go and leave but I opened the door to see a SWAT team in my face demanding I surrender." She looks up to look at the girls. "You know on Mythbusters when they shoot a gun into the water and the bullet explodes as soon as it hits it? Yeah…" She takes a deep breath and sighs. "That was fun to find out. But then they fell on their asses and dropped their guns and I ran away."

"Got to Chicago and laid low for a while, and once it all died down I turned to bank jobs. As you do. I worked with The Constrictor for that first bit when I was just starting out, who is a pretty stand up guy by the by. After I got bored with that I went to work with the mob, I gave them a cut from my 'earnings' and signed on as an enforcer. I'm actually really surprised that you heard anything about me Rickie. It's not like I tried to fight Spider-Man in New York or anything, I was C-list working out of Chicago." She tells the painter.

"I mean, I'd vacation a couple of times a year when things got too hot. That was when I was in Vegas and the Hulk thing happened." She tells everyone. "He was grey when I met him, not green. I think that made him less strong or something, but way more talky. And grabby. It's not like I was wearing Trauma's outfit or anything, I was in jeans. Pervert." She mutters, sounding quite aggrieved. "But it doesn't matter if Hulk is strongest one there is, you're not doing anything if you can't get solid footing to throw a punch. But he kept pissing me off by being totally loving gross and creepy. Seriously, if any of you are thinking of super stuff you're going to get that. Ugh. I increased the air friction around him so much that just moving was tearing the flesh off his bones, I almost flayed him alive."

Tabby pauses for a few moments. "I realised I was about to cross a line…so I ran away again. And got blackout drunk for months so I wouldn't have to deal with it or think about it. Next thing I know I'm skating at one fifty down the interstate coming out of L.A with a pallet of gold bricks from I-don't-know-where behind me and Iron Man flying overhead trying to blast me. I was trying to get away so I did the only thing I could think of. I threw that gold right into traffic." Tabby makes a helpful throwing motion to accompany this. "There was a massive pileup, both sides of the interstate and over all the lanes. Iron Man stopped chasing me and flew down to help and keep it from getting more worse than it was. That's when it kinda it me. Instead of using that as a distraction and run away, I stayed to help. Four people died because of what I did."

Staring down at her hands, Tabby remains silent for two or three minutes. "As soon as the ambulance and police and Iron Man had it back under control I gave myself up. Pleaded guilty to everything when I got in front of a judge, if Iron Man hadn't testified on my behalf I'd probably be sitting on death row or something." Tabby looks each of the house in the eyes in turn. "I was nineteen when I got sent to the Raft. I'd been doing the whole supervillain thing since I was 16. I'll be twenty two in August, but I got my birthday present already when I was let out and given a chance to make up for what I did." She smiles, but it looked out of place on her otherwise blue face. She pushes herself up out of the chair and head towards her room. "Night girls."

Anna catches Tabby just as she reached the door to her room. She looks surprised when Anna wraps her arms and wings around her, but from just how hard Tabby hugged her back Anna could tell it was appreciated. "Thanks Anna." Tabby whispers back to her, her voice sounding a little croaky and teary.

With their House Mother off to bed, it isn't too long before her girls do the same. And sooner rather than later, the house falls asleep.

The beds were surprisingly comfortable, so (hopefully) a good nights sleep had been enjoyed by all despite the downer the previous night had ended on. Though the sheer excitement of the first day of classes and meeting all the other girls might have helped balance that out.

Those who are first out of bed and down to the kitchen find a miraculous buffet spread across the kitchen counter that would make Jesus blush. Pancakes, waffles, french toast, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, leftover pizza, grits, an array of fresh fruit and fruit juices along with plain old bran cereals and milk, all waiting for the mob of hungry girls. Next to the food, and held down by a bowl of grapes, was a note written out in loopy cursive.

pre:
Sorry girls, had to scoot and get ready for my class.
Should be something for everybody, so help yourselves to breakfast!
Mind the robots! (and Ms. Sanders)

…robots?

As if summoned by thinking about them too hard, a trio of mechanical rats suddenly burst out from around a corner and race into the kitchen. Their tiny metal legs end not in claws, but little wheels that seem to be able to propel them right up the very walls! One of them races up the side of the kitchen bench to drop off another stack of pancakes, which were being held in a spindly telescoping arm emerging from the its back. The other two work in tandem to fill a just with fresh squeezed orange juice. On top their heads, like a beanie, a minuscule satellite dish spins and whirs.

Everybody gets a HP for the intro bit! Woo! And I can't remember if I said it or not, but in addition to normal HP uses you can spend them on directing the plot/narrative for a post too! Woo!

...how does that work?
The robo-rat Rickie eyes pauses for a moment, its satellite dish bopping up and down for a moment, then goes back to kitchen duties.

When Sarah beckons the toast serving robo-rat, it races over. A rather high pitched *squeak* is emitted from within the contraption, sounding like a rather unconvincing attempt to make midi mouse noises. But to Sarah, it's a completely different noise. For she hears the robo-rat say, "Squeak!"
