ST LOUIS CONGRATULATORS

When you say "players in the minors who shouldn't be there" do you mean players from the MLB roster?

Apologies if I'm telling you something useless, but Salmon should be on the roster and Davis should be in the minors.

I'm assuming "who's on the bench" vs. "who's in the lineup" and "order of the starting rotation" don't matter right now?

Also, what does the (##/##) mean in front of players? I'm guessing (current ability out of 100/peak ability)? If so, Goldschmidt is pretty bad and I should probably consider playing someone else at 1b.

There are probably one or two teams per expansion class that are completely unsalvageable. The rest can be fixed if you know what you're doing. Granted, new owners probably don't, but having them build teams from a very small list of feeder teams probably isn't going to do much for them either.

I'm probably one of the one or two unsalvageable teams and I'd still rather keep going. I have no idea what I'm doing so I'll lose for a while. That's fine.

Here's a question, though: I'm seeing that there are some teams who have pitchers who pitch to contact, leading me to believe there are entire strategies around having sweet ground ball pitchers and amazing fielders to suck everything up.

When I'm putting together a roster in the future, should I be looking at a player's peripheral defensive stats on BBREF or something? I really was just going "welp; he was a good hitter/pitcher" with 0 context to defense, park size, etc.

In other words, was my feeder construction bad merely from a talent-selection standpoint, was it fine talent-wise but lacking a coherent strategy for how to get outs/runs, or just lovely all around?

Everyone is saying don't trade picks. So I probably won't unless someone wants to offer me 2 seriously legit starting pitchers and a 3b solution. And that's probably overpaying even for a Babe Ruth or a Ser Barrold, First of His Name.

What am I missing, though? Yes, those 2 players are loving amazing and exist on a higher tier than literally anyone else. But with the rest of my roster being basically complete poo poo, wouldn't it make more sense to fix several weak spots rather than have 1 really amazing player?

Understood. I actually have the #2 pick so presumably it's Barry Bonds that I'm trading.

And yeah: what Smasher outlined below is what I had in mind (though I'd actually prefer a starting pitching-heavy deal rather than 1 SP + other awesome poo poo)

And in a large sample size, you want competent pitching more than you need a circus strongman, however much that circus strongman owns (see: the 1998 St. Louis Cardinals)

Furthermore, I'm not looking for "better than average" pitchers. I thought Chuck Finley and Mark Langston were going to be good since they had strong careers and were rated in the 90s and they got loving shelled. I'll keep my #2 pick if someone doesn't knock me over with an amazing "fix your starting rotation for the cost of 1 Barrold Bonds" offer.

Here are my unsolicited thoughts on your situation:

So, to your benefit, your needs line up fairly well. The problem is you only have 3 picks to fix those, and it would be wise to spend 2 of them on SP. My suggestion is that you trade down out of the #2 maybe half a round and gain some additional draft picks to further stock your roster. My suggestion is to find a spot in the first round where you'd still be able to grab either Ryan/Maddux (or, worst case scenario, Boggs). If some veteran team offers you a king's ransom for your pick, sure, go for it, but I think just the additional picks would do you better. You'd be crazy not to take one of the excellent 2B available this go around, especially given your current starter. And literally any of the top 12 or so 1B are better than what you have going at the moment.

You need to find a way to get both Mantle/Edmonds in your every day lineup (or trade one of them to help you somewhere else). What I guess I'd do is probably move the worst of the 2 defensively (that's probably Mantle) to a corner OF spot.

Thanks for this.

Would this be a serviceable SL outfield?

LF: Mantle
CF: Edmonds
RF: Maris/Vlad platoon

Also, Roger Maris is a loving trap player :smith:

I suppose it doesn't matter what I can do with my #2 right now because nobody is trying to trade for it. I'd love tons of picks instead of players too! Really, it's the same logic I had originally: I have too many holes for 1 pick to solve. Either I need more picks, or I need to flip my pick for multiple players.

I'm finding this all fascinating, at least. Like, if I had to do this all over again I'd have a coherent strategy to my team/park rather than "dudes that were good" and "yay st. louis" respectively.

I'd also have completely avoided the 2012 DBacks since it seems to be a pretty good rule of thumb that all the current players in their prime are bad.

Smasher, is it kosher if I do this? If not, then just assume I use my pick on 2000 Barry Bonds.

My team sucks, and a Ser Barrold (Praise be Unto Him) doesn't help me as much as multiple players likely would.

I REALLY want to trade my pick.

What I'd want back:

1.) Another lower 1st-round pick + a #1 starter type
OR
2.) A high 2nd and 3rd round pick + a #2-3 starter type
OR
3.) Whatever mystery thing you've got to offer.

In other words, please don't think I'm neglecting my team. I know I'm on the clock, but I was hoping the championship would be decided by then so that everyone had perfect information on the draft. If I'm not allowed to post to solicit trades/drag my feet, I choose 2000 Bonds. If I don't get an offer I like, I choose 2000 Bonds.

Hey, I still control the 18th and 24th overall picks and still need SP/1b/2b/3b help (my team is real bad; I picked some bad feeders).

It was super late last night and I needed to go to bed, but I was in negotiation for the 24th pick.

I believe the packages were:

My 24th pick for:
Billy Williams + Steve Carlton (don't remember years; can y'all post please?)

or

My 24th pick for:
Johan Santana + Rafael Palmeiro + Frank Tanana + some utility infielder

I'm leaning toward the second package but I worry that Santana will suck in the Super League. Raffy's a big improvement over Paul Goldschmidt, and Tanana provides insurance in case my rookie Gibson rolls poorly.

The second package gives me an acceptable rotation (Pedro/Hubbell/Sananta/Ford/Gibson) and an adequate lineup everywhere but either 2b or 3b (Elston Howard/Palmeiro/Nomar/Mantle/Edmonds/Maris-Alou platoon, whoever I draft at 18 for 2b or 3b) with some decent subs (baby Vlad, Chuck Finley, Mark Langston). My bullpen would still be a dumpster fire, but whatever. I can abuse my starters or something.

Does this seem like a reasonable return? I feel like it improves me far more than a single draft pick would.
