Destroyer and Demolisher are the exceptions, I guess, but even then it depends on the map and enemy.

Yes, please. Zombies and Mercenaries would be great additions.

Ideas for improving original classes: make singularity twice as big, repeatedly stun armored enemies for a few moments like it did in ME2, and work through shields/barriers (maybe at rank 6 or something). Give pull a similar work-through-shields evolution. Make Cryo Blast as badass as Snap Freeze. Make Combat Drone and Sentry Turret not just supportive but actually powerful in their own right. Give Concussive Shot, Incinerate, and Carnage even more damage. Give the drell vanguard 500 barrier strength instead of 250, maybe with a version of Slam that works through shields instead of Pull, and a 25% chance of no cooldown evolution in the racial passive.

The Acolyte is actually not that efficient for stripping shields because you have to count the time you spend switching guns, charging the shot, and switching back. Unless your main weapon is incredibly lovely you're almost always better off just shooting more regular bullets.
For trash mobs, sure, I wouldn't bother switching to the Acolyte if you have it as a secondary weapon. But holy poo poo does it wreck shields. An unaugmented lvl X Acolyte shot does 2450 damage versus shields/barriers. Throw in a High-Caliber Barrel + Pistol Rail Amp + Commando Gear and that ramps up to a ridiculous 4230 damage. Five shots of that (a single clip if you put in the heat sink mod) will single-handedly kill the shields of an Atlas on Gold, whereas three shots will deal with both Banshees and Primes. Everything else is shield-stripped in a single hit.

The Acolyte works really well for biotic caster classes, and especially the Fury. Biotic explosions are really rather weak against shields, and unless the boss mob is surrounded by juicy targets you're much better off killing the shields in like 1/10th the time it'd take biotic explosions to do. If you're good at bouncing shots off walls you'll have the target completely shield-stripped before it even walks around the corner.

Also if you're somewhat up close (=Fury) Geth become much easier to deal with as well. Hunter approaches? Acolyte shot (which strips shields and staggers, so no dodging) closely followed by Throw gets rid of it in no time at all. Plus the projectile has some kind of electric effect as well, so unshielded enemies will stand there twitching as if you'd hit them with Overload. The only real drawback is the charge-up delay, so you need to make preemptively charging it up a habit. Otherwise 'oh poo poo' situations can become rather problematic, especially if you're impatient and don't wait for the charge to finish completely, leaving you standing there like an idiot without anything to show for it.

If you've got a class that has the original human style dodge, you can dodge-forward and switch weapons instantly. It also looks badass to dodge toward an enemy with a sniper and come up with a shotgun.

I'm aware of the raw numbers, but when you add charge time, reload time, and swap time, your shield DPS does not compare all that favorably to a Carnifex X or Talon I, which are of course useful against everything else too.

EDIT: I'll substantiate this with actual math when I get home from work

Only equip two weapons if you're not planning on using powers. For example, I run Krogan Sentinel like this and it works great. The only timed ability I have is tech armour, which I almost never detonate.

For Krogan Vanguard, I stick with one lightweight shotgun (eviscerator X, usually, since it's 200% without putting points into carry weight) and I Always Be Charging.

I run with a Disciple and a Phalanx on my Kroguard because I don't want to be useless when I'm forced to be at range. 95% of the time I've got my Disciple out and am headbutting everything, but when there's a hack or escort, or the only enemies left are banshees, I don't want to be just loving around while my team does the real work. Charging around and killing everything else can only get you so far.

There are also a number of my characters that carry a ULM geth SMG and almost never use it. Hitting ammo boxes at the right time gets to be second nature if you play enough, but sometimes you just can't afford to and it's nice to have a big ol' pool of ammo sitting in your back pocket instead of staring at "No Ammo" right below your reticule, as you vainly hope that powers alone will be able to get you out of the kind of situation where powers AND guns haven't allowed you to make it to an ammo box in the entirety of your chosen weapon's spare ammo.

Basically what I'm saying is that just because you equip two weapons doesn't mean you have to actually use them more than once in a blue moon. And as long as you're not actually losing anything, you might as well.

The trick to getting the most utility out of two weapon setups is to focus on having a long range and a short range weapon. Trying to specialize for different defenses leads to having the wrong gun out with some rear end in a top hat in your face. This doesn't really happen with ranges since you know to keep your short range weapon equipped unless nobody is around.

In general I do prefer one weapon setups but if you don't care about weight or you have a weight reduction passive like the humans it can be worthwhile to bring a spare.

I carry two weapons when it doesn't matter and could help me. All of my engineer classes have two weapons (usually go full caster, so guns like Indra, Piranha, Hurricane, and a side pistol have no appreciable effect on recharge speed).

Sometimes, I will have a pistol as a long-range or more accurate alternative.

I'll play a silver at level 1 when I promote. It's pretty common for me to take top score. The best/worst was doubling the score of a level 20 Geth infiltrator with a GPSG X as a lvl 1 human eng.

Part of it is having a scoped Talon and the other part is that they're playing Silver at level 20 for a reason.

I usually play a bronze after a promotion to give my guys a few skills. From level 12 or so on up I usually play gold and a few bronze matches after reaching level 20 is good stress relief, things just die so quick and the games are very quick and relaxing.

Though in the last week I've just been starting silver lobbies for promoted level 1 characters and just waiting for people to join the third wave or so. Better credits that way and I can still hold my own just fine.

Now that the Pistol ULM is in and it makes SMG ULM works I really like a talon/paladin paired with a hurricane. I use the extended barrel or scope on the pistol and the HV barrel on the SMG so I can use the pistol for long range plinking and the SMG for guardians and laying into armored bosses.

The pistol/smg switch animation is much faster than the long guns so you can swap very easily.

SciFiDownBeat's Guide to Individual Kit Tactics

Here's my quick advice on the basic strategy for each kit. Some classes, races, and kits are better in certain roles than others, but the purpose of this list is not to rank each kit but to advise what the particular kit should be doing.

Partly personal preference and partly common strategy. Constructive criticism is welcomed.

Some key words:

quote:

Abbreviations
DR = Damage Reduction
DoT = Damage over Time
evo = evolution
BE = Biotic Explosion
FE = Fire Explosion
CE = Cryo Explosion
TB = Tech Burst
ABC = Always Be Charging

Soldier
  • Human - Versatile jack-of-all-trades. Spam Adrenaline Rush with top evo's for defense capability. Spam Adrenaline Rush with bottom evo's for increased weapon damage. Frags are great in any situation (use Grenade Capacity gear). Use Conc Shot only if Rank 6 Power Use evo for Adrenaline Rush is taken--and even then, only when Frags are overkill (against single mobs).
  • Turian - Mid-range boss-killer. Spam Marksman to make your Assault Rifles and SMGs deadly. Proximity Mine is great against bosses for the Rank 5 Damage Taken evo. Proxy Mine is better than Conc Shot in almost every situation. Best at medium range against bosses.
  • Krogan - Close-quarters tank. Melee bonuses up the rear end (Fortification purge, Fitness bonuses, Rage, equipment) for trash mobs; Inferno Grenades for bosses. Put no points in Carnage and you won't have to worry about weapon weight. Best in close quarters against mobs as a tank.
  • Batarian - Close-quarters crowd-control. Ballistic Blades stagger almost anything--great for groups of mooks. Inferno Grenades for bosses, but you can afford to forgo them. Use Blade Armor and Fitness to mix up durability and melee damage (but don't go full stop on either).
  • Vorcha - Close-quarters "tank." Set and forget Bloodlust; kill off stragglers (usually with heavy melee) to feed Bloodlust. Use Flamer in short bursts for the stagger, punctuated with weapon fire. Carnage is almost useless here.
  • N7 Destroyer - Boss-killing gunner/tank. Put on Devastator Mode and shoot. Use Multifrags liberally. Missile Launcher is useless. Synchs well with the Revenant for all-purpose destruction or Typhoon for maximum boss-killing potential.

Engineer
  • Human - Crowd-control caster. Distract enemies with Combat Drone, but focus on spamming Incinerate/Overload (and vice versa) for tech combos. Combat Drone's Detonate and Chain Lightning evo's are useful gimmick CC techniques.
  • F Quarian - Debuff caster. Sentry Turret is a useful annoyance, and has evo's that can be combined with Incinerate/Cryo Blast for FE's and CE's. Alternately, spec out of Sentry Turret and focus on using Incinerate for DoT and Cryo Blast for armor weakening.
  • Salarian - Distraction debuffer/caster. Spam Energy Drain/Incinerate for tech combos; regularly use E-Drain for DR and shield recharge. Use Decoy to farm, distract, and stagger (with the Rank 5 Shock evo).
  • Geth - Versatile glass-cannon. Set and forget Hunter Mode, and use Geth Turret primarily to restore the shield gate. Spec for shield restore to "tank" or spec for damage and combine with Overload spam for general crowd control.
  • M Quarian - Crowd-control debuff caster. Area Tac Scan is extremely useful for non-Geth teammates. Tac Scan is also useful for signaling teammates to focus fire on a specific target. Arc Grenade to wipe shields and Incinerate for the occasional TB.
  • N7 Demolisher - Versatile caster. Set up Supply Pylon and camp nearby. Arc Grenade shields and Homing Grenade armor; punctuate with weapon fire. Grenade Capacity gear a must. Set up SP near an ammo crate and redeploy often for maximum grenade supply.

Adept
  • Human - Crowd-control caster. Singularity is weak compared to Shockwave in terms of CC; somewhat useful for farming/choke points. Biotic combos with Warp/Shockwave; stagger with Shockwave. Shockwave behind walls (it goes through them).
  • Asari - Versatile caster. Spam Warp/Throw for BE's, or work in tandem with teammate for BE's. Use Statis periodically at choke points, on Guardians, and on Phantoms.
  • Drell - Glass-cannon caster. Equip a shield-stripping gun and spam Pull/Reave for BE's. Reave is also useful for DR and DoT. Cluster Grenade is useful for instant crowd control when you can't set up BE's. Use your agility for hit-and-run tactics.
  • Asari Justicar - Tank caster. Use Biotic Sphere defensively (at choke points, objectives) and offensively (with Rank 6 Warp Effect evo). Combine BS and Reave spam for DR. Pull/Reave for BE's every so often. Good for farming.
  • Ex-Cerberus - Versatile crowd-control. Singularity is useless compared to Smash in terms of crowd control; spec out of Singularity completely. Rank 6 Shield Pen. evo for Lash is a must. Smash goes through walls. Follow Smash with heavy melee.
  • N7 Fury - Crowd-control glass-cannon caster. Set A-Field and reapply every breather you get; use it to break up mobs with close-range hit-and-run BE's. Set and forget D-Channel, or spam DC/Throw along with AF/Throw.

Infiltrator
  • Human - Debuff glass-cannon. Spec Tac Cloak for damage bonus. Alternate cloaked weapon fire with Cryo Blast or Sticky Grenade. Possible to use Sticky Grenade as a knock-off Proxy Mine with Rank 6 Proximity Trap evo to cover flanks.
  • F Quarian - Distraction debuffer. Spec Tac Cloak for duration. Use Sabotage against synthetics for disorientation and distraction; also useful for tech combos. Sticky Grenade optional but useful in dire situations.
  • Salarian - Versatile glass-cannon. Spec Tac Cloak for damage bonus. Cloak, Proximity Mine, and fire quickly to maintain cloak bonus. Energy Drain when shields are low, or spam for DR with the Rank 6 Armor Boost evo.
  • Geth - Versatile glass-cannon. Spec Tac Cloak for damage bonus. Set and forget Hunter Mode. Cloak, Proximity Mine, and fire for massive damage. You are basically a stronger, more knowledgable Salarian with no shield-regen power.
  • M Quarian - Crowd-control caster. Spec Tac Cloak for duration. Recon and focus fire with (area) Tac Scan. Soften targets (particularly bosses) with Tac Scan/Arc Grenade combo. Very good for completing objectives.
  • N7 Shadow - Versatile close-quarters ninja. Spec Tac Cloak for duration. With Rank 6 Bonus Power evo, turn on Tac Cloak and get off two Shadow Strikes. SS also works as a "tech Charge" with Rank 6 Shield Drain evo. Spam Electric Slash (especially behind walls).

Vanguard
  • Human - Close-quaters crowd-control. ABC groups for crowd control and stragglers for shield refill. Spam Charge/double Nova to break up mobs. Use Nova's invincibility frames to your advantage. Shockwave crowd control is inferior to area BC crowd control but useful in small rooms and walled environments.
  • Asari - Close-quarters caster. ABC stragglers, never groups except for hit-and-run. Stasis Phantoms, Guardians, choke points, etc. Use Statis bubble/area Charge for multi-BE's. Lift Grenades are not reliable but useful in a pinch for stagger. Always charge lifted enemies.
  • Drell - Glass-cannon caster. ABC loners and Pulled enemies. Equip a shield stripping gun for maximum Pull potential. Cluster Grenade in sticky situations. It's important to use area Charge for stagger, shield refill, and a quick getaway.
  • Krogan - Close-quarters tank. Set and forget Barrier; ABC groups and bosses. Act as a decoy and take heat away from teammates. Constant melee is your main source of damage. Follow Charge with heavy melee (while still locked on to target). Spec out of Carnage.
  • Ex-Cerberus - Versatile crowd-control. ABC everything; deal with groups with Smash/heavy melee, Lash/Smash stragglers, Smash bosses behind walls. Thanks to Charge, you can take more risks than Adept counterpart--Lash is less important here.
  • N7 Slayer - Versatile caster. ABC loners; use P-Disruptor to "snipe" or to stagger; use P-Disruptor before charging (unlike Charge/Nova with regular Human Vanguard). Use Charge primarily for shield refill and P-Disruptor usage. Spam Biotic Slash (especially behind walls).

Sentinel
  • Human - Versatile caster. Keep Tech Armor on and alternate Warp/Throw for BE's, shooting in between casts; or, stick to one power to prime/detonate in tandem with teammates. Detonate Tech Armor when surrounded or behind cover.
  • Turian - Versatile gunner/caster. Set and forget Tech Armor (for power damage bonus and DR) and spam Warp/Overload to set up BE's/TB's for teammates. Overload also useful for crowd control with Chain Overload and Neural Shock.
  • Krogan - Close-quarters tank. Set and forget Tech Armor for DR. Neglect Incinerate and go for maximum weapon weight, or focus on powers and spam Incinerate/Lift Grenade for maximum versatility.
  • Batarian - Crowd-control caster. Set and forget Blade Armor (make sure to take Rank 6 Power Recharge). Stagger with Shockwave; screw over Phantoms with Sub Net. Use Sub Net against armored enemies with Rank 5 Damage & Slow evo.
  • Vorcha - Close-quarters "tank." Set and forget Bloodlust; kill off stragglers (usually with heavy melee) to feed Bloodlust. Use Flamer in short bursts for the stagger, punctuated with weapon fire. Cluster Grenades are a panic button.
  • N7 Paladin - Versatile debuff caster. Alternate Energy Drain/Snap Freeze (or vice-versa) for tech combos; or use singularly, E-Drain for shields and Snap Freeze for armor. Incinerate is inferior. Light melee is good for swatting away trash; don't rely on the shield to hold choke points.
