(Left to right: Jeff Crocker, Matt Gourley, Jeremy Carter, Mark McConville)

Superego: Profiles in Self-Obsession. Brought to you by Drs. Jeremy Carter, PhD and Matt Gourley, PyT. With resident specialists Mark McConville and Jeff Crocker.

Superego is a monthly improvised podcast based around 3-5 minute sketches with Carter, Gourley and McConville doing various characters, many of them recurring. I have no idea what Jeff Crocker does.

In the past season they've had a TON of guest improvisers. Paul F. Tompkins may as well be the 5th member, as he's in drat near every sketch in season 3. Patton Oswalt has appeared a few times, as has Greg Proops, Andy Daly, Andy Richter, Erinn Hayes, Jeff Davis, and many others. This last episode featured Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett from MST3K and Dan Harmon doing a very respectable Miss Piggy impersonation.

Superego is different from other improv podcasts such as Improv4Humans in that it's edited to be very tight and polished, almost to the point where it seems unimprovised. This means the podcast is only a half hour once a month, but considering how goddamn awesome the result is, I think it's worth it. In my opinion, this show rivals CBB as the funniest podcast on the interair right now.

I'm totally not doing this show justice, so here are some goddamn CLIPS:

General Zod meets his attorney featuring Patton Oswalt and Chris Tallman
Brown Snowspeeder Squadron with Paul F. Tompkins and plenty of Brown 2 jokes
You seen that movie? You seen the movie what's called Pray-day-der? You empty em dreamcatchers. (When's mom coming home?) Pray-day-der.
Maggie the GPS Did you know her vestigial twin had a vestigial twin? It is a horrible hall of mirrors Myike.
Hashimoto Wellness Labs Hearing Test Look, dipshit, if you're not going to raise a hand we're going to have to move on to something else.
Wells of America: Your money is as safe as your children... where are your children?
"Hey Milton?" "Yeah Dupree?" Beauty is in the balls of the eyeholder.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt I got a bad case of the wheelchairsies.

Now go fuckin listen to Superego! It's on iTunes here and rss here. Unfortunately, all of seasons 1 and 2 now cost money, but season 3 is all free and all awesome.

We're all going to experience changes in our life but only the best of us will qualify for front row seats.

It's worth noting that an episode of Superego is not your regular joe MP3. It's a fancy, dazzling M4A with chapters, pictures and the occasional hidden surprise! I, for one, never get tired of the 30 second photoshop jobs.

Also, Bond... how British am I?

No episode this month, there was some tweet or something I don't remember that said there's only a couple episodes this season so they want to take the time to make sure they're perfect.

They've only got two episodes and a best of for the rest of season 3. And they're working on a Shunt McGupin album.

What exactly are chapters in m4a files and how do I access them, also the pictures and hidden surprises I guess. I play podcasts in informationTunes and I thought it would just do all the stuff for me.

I listen and gaze to Superego on my portable iDevice so I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that. I just played an episode on iTunes and between Advanced and Help on the taskbar, there's Chapters. But that way you only get to see small pictures and only one per chapter...

I use Winamp (yes, really) and the pictures show up in the video window. Also you can "watch" the episodes on the Superego website.

Also also a new The War of Two Worlds is up. It's good, but I still prefer the way the Superego guys normally make an episode (ie not written).

e: as a side note, I love that the TAH guys are named Ben Acker and Ben Blacker. I imagine they met and immediately decided they needed to do a show together because of their names.

Shock of shocks. I love the show but they've made, what, like 48 episodes in six years? With some best-ofs and "pledge drives" mixed in, it probably rounds out to about three hours of content per year.

I guess I need to see them live to get my fix. Has anyone seen them live?

To be fair, it is one of the best produced podcasts around, I can't really think of any others that are edited and sound so well. I agree though, I'd love more content.

I don't think the super-produced atmospheric sounds add enough to the show to justify 30 hours. 30 hours? Not at all. I appreciate the effect, sure, but I'd much prefer more frequent shows and a more loose show.

I don't think it's just the production, although that adds a lot more time than you'd think. Isn't Superego one of those shows where they record a lot of poo poo and only put a tiny fraction of the material into the actual show?

They were pretty certain about it on the live chat. Obviously getting your hopes up with this show is a no-no, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it March 1st.

I forgot to post about the live chat, but they also said they've recorded all their live shows and they're going to do something with them in the future. Problem is they're picky about sound quality (understatement), and the sound quality of live shows is obviously not great.

Also Mark said he had just been listening to the Journeyman album in his car before the live chat. So it's almost here! But "almost here" with Superego means who the hell knows.

Personally I just want the Superego guys to do what makes them happy, because that's when they're at their funniest. If I only get a show every few months, as long as they're enjoying making it I think it'll be good.

The only caveat is I think they shouldn't perseverate too much on the episodes. I think they overthough 3.15, and it was just okay. B Wing Squadron was amazing, but the rest was meh. Well I guess upon relistens the Guy Fieri parody has grown on me. "It'll make you poo poo your dick, that's the Nagasaki Sanchez guarantee!" "Careful, it's loaded with all bullets." Jeff Davis makes everything better. But the pomegranate cruise was meh. They had Jeff Davis and Greg Proops and no Roy Cabris? For shame. The last sketch was I guess good but only because Rob Delaney is amazing. Hervé Villechaize needs to take a break from the show. That sketch was boring.

On relistens I've liked 3.15 more but it's still not up to the standards the rest of season 3 set. Season 3 has been amazing. I seriously relisten to seasons 2/3 like once every week or two weeks, and it never gets old. I usually skip the first couple of season 2 eps because they're a bit sketchy but other than that I just loving love this show so much.

I'm a woman!
