Speaking of tire poo poo that didn't catch on, remember the tires that had coloured stripes on the treads from like the late 90s or early 2000s?

And since then semis tried and mostly rejected going from duals to singles.

The tire industry developed the tire tech to make wider low-profile tires, and the ability to add a significant rain groove, instead, basically, making the purpose behind the twin tires redundant.

The Super Singles couldn't quite equal the load capacity of duals for the cost in that application, I think.

I love hidden tank caps. I wish I could remember the car we rented when I went to the US with my parents when I was 8 but we rolled up to the gas station and my dad spent 5 minutes walking round the car looking confused. Eventually the guy in the station came out and asked if he was alright and my dad had to admit that he couldn't find the gas cap. The dude just laughed and prodded the rear plate revealing the sneaky cap and my dad felt really silly because it was pretty much the only spot he hadn't checked.

Pretty much any rear wheel drive US domestic built prior to 1987, and a non zero number of them after that. I’m reasonably sure that the GM B-bodies were the last ones, production ending in 1996.

I knew the '56 Chevy had the gas door there, but not the Olds, and that Olds is one of my favorite taillight designs.
To be *real* trick, you use the '56 mechanism on a '55 (the '55 Chevy has a standard fuel filler door on the left quarter panel.)

GM fell in love with the gas filler behind the rear plate somewhere in the '60s, primarily. My '70 Cutlass has it, and yeah, the Caprice/Impala SS was probably the last. The sedans (and the models that had a coupe), at least - the wagons had a door in the flanks.
I can say that if you happen to have to park on a slope, you better have a cap that seals well, since the neck is just barely above the top of the tank. That may be what killed the design. That and some awkwardness in filling.

Also probably moving the tank out of the rear impact zone.

To make this extra Russian, the car on the left is a VAZ-2108/Lada Samara and I've honestly not seen one on the road for 30 years. To think there's still some tootling around over there is nuts.

*edit: seeing as this is the awesome car poo poo thread, they ran them in the Paris-Dakar

Oh and they also did a Group B version called the EVA but as soon as they got approval to go ahead with the project Group B got killed off. Apparently a single Group S variant got built but obviously that went nowhere either.

Possibly, but it is tucked between solid frame rails, with an actual frame member between the tank and tha bumper, not to mention a substantial bumper. I take your meaning, though - moving to a unibody, which of course they did, would change all of that.

StormDrain posted:

That is definitely an advantage. The down side, though, is that you have to stretch the hose a little further, and you really need to pull through so the actual rear end of the car is even with the pump, sometimes a problem in tight or busy gas stations.
