One standard I learned recently from my teacher was Fox on the Run and he thought it sure sounds like a 100-year-old traditional but it's a Manfred Mann song lol

Fitzy Fitz posted:I appreciate that covers are actually somewhat well regarded in bluegrass, like a sign of respect. One of the best things about Sturgill Simpson’s concerts over the last year is the cover songs (Purple Rain, Red Red Wine, Pinball Blues, Midnight Rider, etc) that he plays and the little snippets of songs that they add into the jam.

One of the many reasons bluegrass so much better live is that a ton of bluegrass bands play old standards in their sets but never record them. I saw Junior Sisk a few years ago and they killed ‘He will set your fields on fire’ and John Henry some other great classics. Just super talented musicians letting loose. Pretty much every bluegrass musician comes up going to bluegrass jams and knows the whole bluegrass catalog by heart and can jam on them like crazy. I don’t think many genres except jazz and old-time have that same kind of jam culture around a common canon. Billy Strings’ ‘Me and Dad’ album captures that feeling pretty well. E: some of the best bluegrass I’ve heard has been at jams played by people who have never played together before and may never again, and I think the fact that the genre has a shared canon that makes that spontaneous collaboration possible is really cool, especially when there is like a 60-70yr age spread among the participants. Are you even a bluegrass band if you don't play White Freightliner Blues and some variation on Foggy Mountain Breakdown at least once?

New Tyler absolutely kicks, and I am extremely happy he finally put Nose on the Grindstone on an album. The organ on it is an incredible touch. edit: Kull the Conqueror posted:Tyler's new album is killer. The organ shines through a lot of it. The solo in Oneida is so lovely

'1952 Vincent Black Lightning' is a Richard Thompson song (who is himself thread appropriate) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOCZwKmjR6E These two guys do one of my favorite versions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQK2xFOAxrI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F63gIy2nFxE But my very favorite version was an old guy that used to play at a jam. I just found out yesterday on XM radio that '20/20 vision' was originally a Gene Autrey song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcCRhVwpqhg I love this wonderful Jimmy Martin 'music video': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF_6klv6TEM Del McCoury's show on Sirius was focused on Jimmy Martin because his birthday was August 10 and talked alot about how much Jimmy Martin's guitar playing influenced Tony Rice which I hadn't thought about before. Every time i listen to Jimmy Martin I'm reminded how much I love Jimmy Martin. He had a bass run and a voice like a cannon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqPrFFX6vM0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLmpQ9YYInY

I think Richard Thompson was on the bill, but had already left for the hotel before getting the pat on the back from Dylan (because of course he would never talk to him backstage, or anything). The story went something like that. Full werewolf vocals Bob and an annoying chomper on that video, be warned.

I got to see Greensky Bluegrass last night for the first time and they are loving awesome. I don't understand how the banjo player can have so much chill while shredding so hard

There's this folk song Papa Chico by Tony Esposito, and there's a 90s arrangement by C Bra. It goes kind of likequote:Papa chico you′re the sun Papa Chico could be like a younger boy-dad or father figure? But also a stand in for sunshine and the love of music? Okay. What the gently caress is the discover or discovery? Does Papa Chico, the person or the role, have a discovery that melts ice? What ice? Is music the 'ice beaker' or does the warmth from the sun melt ice? Are they singing about the discovery of the sun itself? Why eating the ice and not melting it? Also the children absolutely do want a gun, have you met kids?

I'm sure backlash from maga/conservative fans is another plausible explanation But Zack Bryan's song is very clearly extremely critical of ICE and its behaviour Is his milquetoast statement about it possibly because he might have gotten threats from the administration?

The Greensky Bluegrass 25th Anniversary show was tight. Sam Bush sat in for most of the show, and Lyndsay Lou's vocals on Can't Stop Now were insane. Hopefully tomorrow's show is as good.
