Carly shook her glass, willing the ice to melt. "You still haven't told me what the mission is."

She leaned forward. "We are going to assassinate the bad men of Hollywood."

Was literally less than 50 feet away to see this go down at Newport Folk. Great time!

They just gave their first full live performance at Newport Folk yesterday and sounded amazing. Most of their songs aren't really my style but the talent is undeniable.

The mystery guest at Newport this year was Dolly FUCKIN Parton. Amazing!

The whole finale show leading up to Dolly was incredible too. First I’ve ever heard of Yola but I instantly became a fan after hearing her do a verse from The Highwomen. We’ve been going to Newport for the last 7 years and that was by far the best closing night we’ve seen. Everybody lost their poo poo when Brandi introduced Dolly to the stage.

I just discovered the HIghwomen and this song after Andy Richter, of all people, tweeted out this live performance clip:

Wow. It was so beautiful, I cried. Before this, I was only familiar with Brandi Carlisle (she opened for the Indigo Girls when I took my wife to see them a few years ago), and that one inescapable Maren Morris pop song. But now they're on my radar, and apparently Amanda Shires and Jason Isbell are amazing and I need to get more into their stuff.

I was literally 20 feet away from the stage at Newport folk when they performed this song. It freaking ruled and it sounds even better here than in the recorded version. Yola is a real talent.

I'd argue that Isbell isn't exactly a bad boy of country and has a much longer and more established pedigree than the other two, but his solo stuff has kind of sparked a resurgence of interest in him, especially among people who generally aren't into country. Rehab is the best thing he did for his career, it seems.

He wrote most of what would become Southeastern while in rehab, and it shows. Every song on that album makes you wanna kill yourself. It's great!

I first started listening to Jason Isbell in 2015 after seeing him play at Newport Folk. I was kind of ignorant to most alt-country at the time and was immediately captivated when I heard him play Alabama Pines.

"The A/C hasn't worked in 20 years
Probably never made a single person cold,
But I can't say the same for me
I've done it many times."

Ugh, that has to be one of the greatest song lyrics ever written. He's so good at it.

I really loved Heard It In A Past Life by Maggie Rogers this year. A little on the poppier side of folk, but a very thoughtful and unique-sounding album.

Generally super into everything this guy does but the mixing on this seems...weird.

Yeah the vocals sound really muffled here. It's like hearing a Neil Young song playing in the next room.

I hope this isn't too obscure, but I wanted to share a local artist I've seen perform a few times around town, Tessa Paige. I just found out she recorded an album late last year and I think she has a really pretty sound!

They kind of skipped over 90s country in their analysis but I was listening to some the other day and even back then there was a strong narrative undercurrent of poverty, provincialism, the man keeping you down etc. Way different from the ooo-rah authoritarian tack that pop country took following 9/11 and Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy poo poo.

I listened to her record when it came out and was none the wiser, I just tend to assume most country-folk songwriters are speaking in character. Never heard of the documentary though, sounds pretty wild!
