Frame rate, and internal 3D resolution are both hold overs from designing the game around very specific hardware. A lot of liberties in design and execution were taken with the understanding the game simply was 1024x720, and ran no faster than 30FPS. The latter would probably take less time/effort to patch than the former. Lord knows what strange things might happen to various features, designed on the assumption of 1024x720, suddenly output at many times that resolution.

I'm not happy about it, and I would really like to communicate to FROM that this sort of thing only barely flies on PC, but I will simply :dealwithit:. Way I see it, FROM is relatively small, and along with them, Namco is taking a risk on that petition. OK, so they gave us a PC game, and for all intents and purposes, it looks like it will absolutely be no WORSE than the console versions. So you win, FROM. You gave us exactly what we asked for, and then some (DLC). That, I am very happy about.

EDIT: Yeah, that vvv Provided, From will have to develop and implement its own scaler code, since PS3, and 360 both sort of have those sort of things integrated into their GPUs for just this purpose, but at the end of the day it should nearly identical. From my experience on a friend's 50" plasma, the game looks great, even with such a meager internal 3D. From did a solid job of making the blurry nature of the output work for them, and aliasing was all but absent.

I can not guarantee anything, but I am going to go ahead and say "you are fine". I basically have the exact same system (3.1ghz CPU), and while the minimums just BARELY exceed some of our configurations, I honestly cannot imagine a situation where a straight console port will perform poorly and not receive crazy amounts of flack.

My reasoning

Minimum Nvidia is an 8800GT. Your 4850 blows that out of the water. This is probably a matter of what Namco had on hand for quality assurance. So while you're 4850 is inferior to the 4870, this should be a complete non-issue, since the latter has no features that the 4850 does not, meaning it is a matter of raw speed.

CPU: EDIT: just noticed you actually had a 3.0 Phenom II X3. this MIGHT be an issue. I personally would not sweat it, but you may want to wait and see how it performs on sub 3.0 Phenom IIs. Again, I can not imagine the game is so poorly coded that a CPU capable of running any other console port on the market will be unable to run what is quit literally a DIRECT port from consoles.

So, yeah, you're JUST below the minimums, but it may literally be nothing more than a matter of what Namco's QA department had available for testing.

I see the port as a gesture of good faith. Could be better, to be sure, but at least it isn't any WORSE than the console release (Resident Evil 4, I'm looking at you). Right now, I just want them to know there is an audience on this platform in the hopes of seeing more FromSoftware on PC. So I am vaguely aware of how 2h weapons works. First it basically multiplies your STR by 1.5, which can not only allow you to effectively meet base requirements at little early, but it also contributes to damage scaling. But does it also add any sort of damage bonus aside from the bonus strength? If so, what is the math? I have always been fuzzy on that part.

I was under the impression I would be unable to coop after beating an area boss, but I just encountered a Sun Bro who has the "What is it" gesture, which is obviously unavailable until after the boss in question. There is the possibility of New Game+, but I doubt it.

Basically what I am asking is, can I continue to coop in an area whose boss I have already killed in my worlds? I am aware (under the impression) I can not be invaded after killing an area boss, but this is where I thought summon signs would be ineffectual as well.

It isn't just that. I can almost tell when my luck will go to poo poo. If you log on, and places where there SHOULD be poo poo-rear end-tons of orange soap markings, there are none, you can probably expect to fail summoning everytime. If there is soap everywhere, will, it still isn't a guarantee. Someone may have not allowed access through their firewall, or haven't properly configured ports, but there probably will not be issue on GFWL side.

Maybe just confirmation bias, because there have been a countless times my summon sign faded, couldn't replace it, and fog gates went up, which I assume means I am being summoned, but it fails. Then again, there have been other times, where I did not place a sign, and fog gates went up, but I imagine that is an attempted invasion that failed to connect.

Anyway, seems like you either have no problems, or you have ALL of the problems. There seems to be no inbetween.

Of course I failed to get all the way down without tripping and falling again. Good thing I didn't have a lot of souls. The reason I level so much is really just because I'm afraid of losing souls, yet too lazy to backtrack to a shopkeeper, so I just invest in stats whenever I hit a bonfire and have far too many souls.

Anyways, should I even be trying to go down there yet? It didn't seem like the enemies were TOO tough but if there's a boss I'm probably hosed so...

No. Also, consider yourself fortunate, because the first part of the Great Hollow, is getting down. If you hit the bonfire, you ALSO have to make your way all the way back UP. Personally, I find down easier, but all the same, unless you are really invested in exploring that area, I can not recommend anyone going that way, except for the purposes of exploring. There are rewards, but the place comes with enormous risk, not the least of which is falling and losing your souls/humanit.

You can change that, but it will not effect the output, except improved vertical detail. So, say you have a lot of horizontal lines, you are less likely to see a lot of stair stepping on those, compared to vertical lines, because there are more lines of resolution, which are then "squished" to fit 16:9, but the video card will STILL render all of that so the final product will not look squished.

In other words, changing that value will do nothing to completely fill your monitor space.

Fog doors completely rape my system. I have no idea what the poo poo, but it is making bosses unnecessarily :darksouls: and there is no telling just where these things start rendering, so out of nowhere, for no (apparent) reason at all > 15FPS. Coming down the stairs after Chaos Witch, and I couldn't tell just why in the world I was getting crap frame rate, but then I went into the next area and it dawned on me it was the boss door for Endless Evacuation. Lo-and-behold, as when the boss door clears, so did the framerate issues associated with it.

Using the res patch only exacerbates the problem, and and areas that use the Chaos Flame texture (see, those ugly huge bug things in blighttown) would cause my system to chug. Interestingly, it seemed to cause all the same frame rate issues of the PS3/360. Unfortunately, even without the res patcher, Blighttown is still a blight. It is only marginally less terrible, which may explain why I was having such difficulty summoning in the area. That sub 30 FPS disconnect "feature" was probably what was botching connections. Pure speculation, though.

I really hoping this game sold well enough to encourage Namco to finance a patch to address this stuff, because even 30FPS on my machine is a joke at 720, and even if it is a matter of making the particle shader SLIGHTLY less complex it might make all of the difference in the world.

Interestingly, performance is basically 40% of my GPU, and 30% of my CPU. I can understand things on the CPU may be about timing between various threads, but even with the res patcher, GPU load never exceeded 60%. I don't know what in the world is going on, but it is damned unfortunate.

The game is out all of two days. We have no idea where support is going from here. Considering the game made Steam's list of top 10, I would personally shoot for seeing regular patches in the future. I see part of the reason Namco bit (pushed) for the port is they do not have to pay anything for Quality Assurance in order to patch their software. Quite literally, the PC version is going to the testing grounds for all of the balancing/bug fixing that will be rolled into the console DLCs, so Namco does not have to pay through the nose in order to support their games on those platforms (speculative. Look into Ring of Fog, and Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring. Alternatively, you can go the magic route, and learn Hush, and Hidden Body, or any combination of the above. Should be noted, that Ring of Fog and Hidden body apparently stack, but I haven't had much experience with it.

Keep your weight under 25%. It can be almost impossible to strafe behind some enemies unless you have the fastest movement speed.

Hornet Ring is a good bet, as well. Just don't wear it all of the time. Just swap to it when you know you will need the additional damage.

Definitely go for a thrusting sword of some sort. They have some sort of hidden critical multiplier, so even those their crit bonus is listed as 1.3, compared to a bandit knife's 147, they will still gain more bonus damage.

Recommended, since you will be using a fast weapon, look into Magic Weapon. The damage bonus is flat, so a weapon with lower stamina cost will generally get more mileage. You need something like 25 INT for CMW, and you can just use Oolicile's Catalyst for a tiny bit more damage (also very little weight). It isn't the best, but a very good option for when you can not take advantage of backstabs or reposte.

For people saying it's a good port in the last few pages because they can run it in 9000x6700, I dunno. I have a reasonable setup (HD5770, Phenom II X4 955BE, 4GB of DDR3) and I have very unstable FPS with the lovely graphics of the default resolution (not using Durante's fix) in 1600x900, which is very annoying. Lots of people with the same trouble too, mostly in AMD cards. I created a profile for the game yesterday and the little I played after seemed improved, although it could be a placebo effect.

This doesn't seem to be a GPU issue, unless your card is regularly going back to 2D mode (try forcing some AF through the CCC). What DOES seem to be the problem is a CPU bottleneck. People with AMDs at ~3ghz will experience halved framerates whenever there are heavy particle effects, such as fog gates. Users have reported that "simply" overclocking their CPU to near 4ghz addresses those issues entirely. Just as a quick example, I can drop the internal resolution to literally nothing. Lower than the default 1024x720, and if I look at double stacked fog gates, like you encounter in the Chaos Witch, or Firesage arenas, 15FPS. Turn the internal resolution to, or even beyond my native of 1920x1080, and performance is fine, EXCEPT in those same exact situations of double stacked fog gates. So we're clear, I have the same CPU, and am ati 4850. If anyone with the same CPU but an Nvidia GPU wants to give us a trip report, that would be pretty rad.

HOPEFULLY, since performance issues are roughly limited to one effect (particles), a fix MAY be possible, since addressing it is likely to address issues for a great majority of users. Everything else is just a matter of being more explicit with simple stuff in the code. Stuff like ensuring the primary GPU is used on Optimus systems, or GPUs are switched to 3D mode. Probably just wishful thinking, however. My guess is, whatever obnoxious performance hog of particle code they have will remain that way, even if something like reducing precision might also help smooth framerates on consoles... god, I hope there is a fix. :smith:
