I think ESPN didn't get enough heat for some of their more half baked 30 for 30's. I hated the Red Sox one because jesus christ, that was so drat recent and also one of the most OVER COVERED sports stories of the past decade. Once Brothers and Tim Richmond: To the Limit both suffered (though the Richmond one to a much greater extent) from the fact that they were done by the official bodies of the respective sport. Once Brothers had far too contrived of an ending and Tim Richmond was a historical white wash. I thought House of Steinbrenner actually was a bit underrated a bit though. I'm not fan of the Yankees but I thought it was an interesting though small in scope view of why people care about the Yankees. I was disappointed in it ultimately because I love Barbara Kopple's work but it just felt truncated, oddly paced, and the fact that George died I'm sure lead to some weird rushes in editing. Also a friend of mine has an opportunity to possibly pitch some ideas to ESPN. What would a dream 30 for 30 be for you?

There were a few I missed and somehow didn't get around to. I watched Fernando Nation the other night and while its pretty by the numbers I was kind of floored by that Johnny Carson joke. Which was something like "I hear there may be a baseball strike...and Reggie Jackson is already offering Valenzuela a job to be his gardner."

At the same time, you sort of have to roll your eyes at the arrogant ones that were among those that dozed off during the information sessions the NBA/NFL hold to attempt to tell them to be smart with the money. I mean, I was an arrogant teen ager (and I am now an arrogant 20 something). I'd probably be nodding off not paying attention either because I figured I knew everything. I'm in my mid 20's now but I only in the last year or so really started figuring out how to manage my meager finances.

please respond posted:Just caught a re-air of Broke and it was very tedious, could have been a podcast. And the background music was so repetitive and annoying. Probably the worst 30 for 30 I have watched which is a shame because The U was one of my favorites, and Cocaine Cowboys was really good too. Something about Corben's style and approach has always given off a vibe of amateur hour as far as his graphics packages and other things. It's weird because I thoroughly enjoyed the U and found Cocaine Cowboys entertaining enough. But it just gives off this very cheap vibe for whatever reason. I agree on the level that Broke got a bit tedious. It would have been better off in my opinion if they focused on one or two athletes and really delved in to how they thoroughly hosed up. So many "oh man I want to know more" moments but they're already bouncing along to another anecdote.

MUST WATCH June 17, 1994 (My Favorite of the first run) The U The Two Escobars Good No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson Small Potatoes: Who Killed the USFL? Pony Excess (Though this is too long) Into the Wind The Best That Never Was Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks The Birth of Big Air Bad Once Brothers - Everyone seems to love this one but I found it completely unsatisfying and unwilling to push with the hard questions. You get a bogus (force narrative) moment of catharsis at the end in the awkward family meet up and thats about it. A legitimately interesting story that gets a poor story telling) Tim Richmond: To the Limit - From what I learned in the 30 for 30 thread a complete white wash of what really happened. Bullshit again because like Once Brothers (done by the league's in house team) its done by NASCAR films. Four Days In October - Yeah, what I really needed was a retelling of one of the biggest sports events in the last 10 years. Way to really tell a hidden gem of a story ESPN. Straight Outta L.A. - Should have been amazing. Instead it is a hamfistedly forced in to a parallel story of the rise of hip hop and Ice Cube waxing about how cool Silver and Black is. Marion Jones: Press Pause - Another that should have been amazing..instead bizarre and just plain bad. The worst of the series in my opinion. ADDENDUM. POST 30 For 30 ESPN DOCS The magic johnson one was okay, but it felt long. I mostly watched it because the footage from when it happened is the most fascinating. Just the pure shock that you could feel in the press conference and of random clips of people just watching the news. It's why June 17, 1994 is so fascinating. Without voice over it provides a look in to an amazing day. It's pure time capsule. Also in that Magic Johnson one when they show that clip from his tv special where the young girl who has HIV is crying and says she just wants to have sleepovers and be a normal kid and it cuts to the crew on set crying, i loving lose it. soggybagel fucked around with this message at 07:42 on Jul 29, 2013 |

I'd love for someone to do a 30 for 30 on the Miami Marlins stadium boondoggle. Reading articles about it just make me laugh and cry. The political fallout around the stadium is the best. Miami is good and hosed. Also great how Jeffrey Loria hosed the Expos and is a piece of poo poo. Would be fun. Just make a Loria hit piece.

Ha, I recall reading that. It's also kind of shocking how some of the older stadiums in England are just, well, old as hell. I was just at White Hart Lane a few weeks ago and man, the concourses are narrow as hell and segmented by very small doorways. Granted, it's over 100 years old but its not hard to imagine how this type of thing happened.

There was a stadium in Africa just a few years ago that had a similar setup and a crush of people happened and yeah you can imagine what happened... Yeah I was going to comment on that as well. When you see crazy loving poo poo go on in stadiums now they're usually in Africa or South America and they still have huge fence barriers.

Catching Hell was interesting but it was too long. No reason it needed to be 2 hours long. Gibney has a very distinct style to his documentaries and sometimes it works and sometimes it just feels cheap. I think the most illuminating stuff as others have pointed out is the Bartman footage of him getting escorted out and the interview with the woman security guard who was genuinely moved by the predicament he was in. I didn't need to see the constant break down of what seat he was in and all that.
