The only issue the Wii U will have once the other two launch is computing power, and the deficit likely won't be as great compared to the one between the Wii and 360 because making another huge leap like that would be prohibitively expensive.

I don't know. Having only 1 gb of useable RAM could possibly leave it worse off than the Wii was, depending on the rumors and the tide.

I think I heard this line of thinking before. I think it was around late 2004? Had to do with handhelds?

Yea, everyone knows it's the average developer that's going to see it as nothing but a tablet thing for touch gimmicks.

As someone who wants a Wii U just to have a cool rear end couch-handheld not even connected to the TV I hope everything about the touch screen is ignored forever. Not to mention it's a gross rear end resistive screen.

MW2 was clearly a parody. You can't get more obvious than sticking Cheney and Rumsfield quotes alongside Ghandi and Einstein. The American soldier sections led you from defending a Goodburger to invading the white house. By way of escorting a tank column through someone's front lawn.

And then there's the actual story, where your British and Canadian task force teamed up with Russians to nuke America and assassinate the terrorist general who led the middle east invasion in the first game.

It's enough to kill my interest in the game, and I've gotten every Call of Duty this gen day 1.

I was already pretty uncomfortable with Black Ops 1 in general. It seemed to have lost it's satirical edge, and felt something approaching racist with how it portrayed the Vietnam war. And the unnecessary JFK thing really got under my skin for some reason.

Which is really annoying because I find the idea of playing CoD on a portable controller hugely appealing.

Edit: Oh I guess I misunderstood what you mean by either direction. Feh.

Did not seem to stop it from garnering what is still considered the best and largest 3rd party library to this day as well as the crown for that generation if not all generations so far.

It's ironic that in order for this to be true Dreamcast can't be considered the same generation as the PS2.

But sadly, in my opinion, this is where Nintendo is starting to flounder most. Mario Galaxy franchise totally rules but the New franchise is unarguably getting stale. Mario Kart franchise is good but it's also unarguably stale. Star Fox franchise is essentially dead. The past two major Zelda games have gotten stellar reviews and sold well, but a year later the general consensus is that the games are 'meh' (I for one really hated Skyward). Other M bodes ominously for the Metroid franchise. Smash Bros Brawl was good but not really 'better' than Melee — if the next game is nothing more than a few more iterative changes, it will feel really stale.

Basically, unless they reinvent a lot of their franchises the way they reinvented Mario with the 'Galaxy' series, will people really be excited for Nintendo releases? Would anyone here truly get excited if they announced a "Mario Kart Wii U" that looked just like an old Mario Kart?

While I agree with this, probably even feeling stronger that Nintendo's main franchises are garbage nowadays, they did pop out Xenoblade somehow. They do have Bayonetta. Other M might have been horrible, but at least Nintendo was trying something new. Wonderful 101 looks great. There are reasons to hate Nintendo yet still be optimistic.

C'mon now, let's not be disingenuous and suggest that the problem with memory cards was going out to buy them.

edit: Does anyone else remember that Diablo 1 port for the Playstation? The save file took up 10 blocks. Out of 15.

The Xbox 360 initially used memory cards. 64mb ones. There was a limit on the file size of XBLA games at 50mb, presumably so that you could fit one onto the memory card if you didn't have a hard drive.

Except the leftover space after the 50mb game wasn't enough to store the gamer profile you needed to purchase the game.

I'm fine with people complaining about things, but HOLY poo poo IT COULD BE SO MUCH WORSE.

The 3DS also got its price cut because it wasn't selling well at $250. The Wii U is not repeating the Wii's success, but it's had a good launch so far.

Not sure how you can say this considering the 3DS had better launch numbers than the Wii U did in every region. In February/March.

Anyways, the simple explanation for why it is overpriced is that it is $100 more expensive than any Nintendo console has ever been.

I'm pretty sure the 3DS in the US sold worse this year than last year. Which, I dunno, seems not great.

They have to, for investors and all that businessy stuff. Could've low-balled it a little, say 4 mil, but then all the articles would be about how "Nintendo doesn't think their new console will sell at all!" They'll probably get close to that 5.5 number, but if they even barely miss it the ol' doom n gloom will be back.

Low-balling in this context makes no sense, the forecast isn't just tossing a dart or deciding to be conservative. It's Nintendo estimating their product's demand and their ability to meet it. Missing it isn't a big deal financially but it's interesting as a sign of the market. All these people taking it as a sign specific only to Nintendo are a bit short-sighted though.

You can't say that until Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy 3, new Zelda and Wii Fit are out. Right now the system is in the same place the Wii was at the same only doing worse. A big reason for that is the same reason 3DS fell flat at launch. Nintendo is repeating mistakes here. Why is it impossible for them to repeat success? Are people so convinced that the Wii was just some blue ocean fluke?

If Mario Kart and Galaxy Triple and whatever were enough to sell the console, the console would already be selling. How many people bought PS3s to play MGS4 years later? How many people bought 360s because they knew a Halo would come eventually? How many people bought Wii U's to play Rayman. :v:

I just mean that buying consoles based on promise is nothing new. If the Wii U can't captivate that same hysteria (and really, it is a completely nonsensical hysteria), it's because the promise isn't as fulfilling comparatively.

A lot of people don't like this idea but I hope the next Mario has one large interconnected urban environment. Not like a GTA sandbox or anything, something more like Pianta Village, but imagine a huge cityscape full of levels and secrets. Like a combination of Sunshine and the cool parts of Banjo Tooie mixed with a new, magical environment. The heretofore unseen Capital of the Mushroom Kingdom, which you gotta win back piece by piece. Basically just a massive world. And no forcing you to exit every time you collect a Star/Shine/Whatever.

I don't care about the actual specifics, but I desperately want the new Mario to be an adventure game somewhat similar to what you are describing. Mario 64 is by far my favorite Mario and that's because the core gameplay goal feels like "explore this world" instead of "get to the flagpole/star." I don't want a drat timer. I don't want a menu based overworld. I don't want what are basically 3D interpretations of 2D levels like 3D Land and Galaxy. I just want something to get lost in.

But I guess that's a single game weighed against a dozen. Pretty silly to expect that to be the standard.

All I know is the Halo remake managed to do the full coat of paint, remove obnoxious parts of the original game, add new gameplay features, and still wasn't $50. That's the gold bar for single-game remakes, and Nintendo looks like it is falling short.

More than that value proposition though, I find it annoying that this is the game that got bundled. Got the special console. Pretty much any other Nintendo game from this holiday would be more appealing. Hell, updating the Nintendo Land one to also include NSMB would be more appealing.

Steam, on the other hand, I wish everybody would emulate with their aggressive sales, but the PC market has always been weird about how to get people to actually spend money on games, rather than pirate them or buy them on a console.

It's not like nobody else knows how to do a sale. The real issue is that there are five hundred other ways to get Steam games besides Steam itself. So I'm in like NSMBU Level 3-3 and it only now occurs to me that this ugly rear end Yoshi I picked up a dozen levels ago is actually the worlds most over-powered easy mode and not something I'm intended to be using.

I realize this because I just completed a swimming level in a Mario game and didn't loving hate it and there's not a drat chance I'm giving it up.
