It would be interesting to see if there's any old news reports of public figures being mysteriously burgled, or having their phones and laptops stolen.

Wasn't there a spate of burglaries against footballers while they were playing away (in Europe, not shagging someone who isn't their misses)? These were blamed on a sophisticated gang and from what I understand never solved.

Ah, ok then.

Even if 8/10 were organised gangs, and the other 1/10 a lucky chancer, then there's still that doubt there, especially with how big the reward for a scoop on a footballer like Gerrard/Rooney would be for a tabloid.

There was definitely collusion between the two, the Daily Post had The Sun bannerhead on their frontpage when they broke the story.

In the words of Dark Helmet: Absolutely nothing.

Does anyone seriously believe that anything is going to happen to Rupert Murdoch?

Remember when this story first broke and everybody said 'nothing would happen' and from it there's a move towards greater press regulation, Paul Dacre making GBS threads himself, Rupert Murdoch confined to a racist twitter account and the News of the World got shut down?

You're going to have, in the next two days, an actual 'NewsCorp bribed US Official to commit War Crime' story with FOX and friends already infighting and breaking apart over the election defeat.

If it's not backed by force of law it will be useless, because the papers can just refuse to sign up to it like Richard Desmond.

Which I hope Leveson has underlined in big, bold letters so it can't be ignored/misconstrued.

No, If anything it is closer to the current model of self-regulation, but with less direct influence from the press themselves. This is combined with a threat that if they don't play ball (Like Richard Desmond pulling his papers out of the PCC) then there will be a 'backstop' of regulation through an independent body like OFCOM.

Underwriting the Independent Regulator with OFCOM is a nice way of having the statutory intervention available, but the likes of the Mail and Star are still going to be crying over it as Stalinist because it fucks over their quite cosy routine of publishing absolute shite.

Any bets on how many pages it gets in tomorrows Mail? RIP FREE PRESS and 9 pages I reckon.

I still don't understand how that's even libel, she didn't actually say anything about McAlpine at all. Or is just asking whether someone's a paedophile libelous?

Judges aren't thick, and nudge nudge wink wink libel is still libel.

Note that he's being sentenced under the guidelines of the 1970's, and the judge would have given him a longer sentence if one were available.

It's ridiculous that judges have to sentence based on those given at the time of the offence.

It's horrible in this instance, but legally the logic is sound.

The closest analogue I can think of is the Pitcairn Island trial, where it was endemic, systemic and had become normalised, and even that was an island of less than 60 people.

This is sensible when you think about it. Why should lying about something that doesn't matter - whether it's phone hacking, your favourite colour or cheating on your wife - give rise to criminal liability?
