She's claiming that she gave information to the NotW rather than selling it, and I think she's also claiming stress as a mitigating factor. Painting a picture of her work environment helps with this, but I doubt it'll go far.

It also implies that she called to give them a story about how counter-terrorism resources were being used to pay coppers to flirt with famous actresses, rather than tipping them off so they could cover their tracks.

It's a really flimsy story, especially given that she says that she didn't need the money right after saying that she was going through a painful divorce and IVF treatments (which are either not covered by the NHS or so badly covered that a lot of people resort to private to get it, I can't recall).

The story in full from the beeb:

BBC News posted:

A senior Metropolitan Police detective has been found guilty of offering to sell inside information on the phone-hacking probe to the News of the World.

A Southwark Crown Court jury convicted Det Ch Insp April Casburn, 53, from Essex, of misconduct in public office.

The counter-terrorism officer was the first person to be prosecuted under Operation Elveden, the probe into payments by journalists to officials.

The News of the World closed amid the scandal of it hacking into voicemails.

Casburn has been released on bail ahead of sentencing.

The judge, Mr Justice Fulford, was told she is currently in the process of adopting a three-year-old child.

He said: "A real possibility is an immediate custodial sentence, but I'm obviously going to have to consider very carefully the issues that we've ventilated this afternoon and any other mitigation."

'Gross breach'
The trial heard that in September 2010 she had contacted the News of the World, days after Scotland Yard reopened its investigations into hacking by tabloid journalists.

Prosecutor Mark Bryant-Heron said Casburn was guilty of a "gross breach" of public trust and had "sought to undermine a highly sensitive and high-profile investigation".

The charge related to when Casburn, from Hatfield Peverel in Essex, was working in counter-terrorism, managing the national terrorist financial investigation unit.

Southwark Crown Court heard one of her team had been asked to carry out financial investigations as part of the Scotland Yard inquiry into phone hacking.

But the detective, at the time the most senior female investigator in Scotland Yard's counter terrorism command, denied asking for cash - and said she had contacted the newspaper out of the public interest.

Casburn said she was angry that her superiors at Scotland Yard had decided to divert officers from counter terrorism.

I'm pretty sure if anyone who wasn't rich/in the police was trying to adopt a child during a trial they'd be denied adoption and thrown in the clink anyway, but I guess it's a "mitigating circumstance" for the dumbass who expects us to believe that the NotW has ever published anything in the public interest.

Crossposting from the bad policemans thread, with regards to the vomit inducing hell that is the Oxford child abuse report:

:nms: http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/mar/03/professionals-blamed-oxfordshire-girls-for-their-sexual-abuse-report-finds :nms:

I advise those of a nervous disposition not to read further.

Don't say I didn't warn you posted:

Police and social workers in Oxfordshire perceived that girls as young as 11 had consented to sex with men, an independent report into the failure to stop their exploitation has said.

Throughout their interactions with six young girls in Oxford, professionals struggled with the law on consent, failing to understand that such was the power of the grooming process the children had no power to say no to gang rape, sexual torture and violence.

The serious case review, commissioned by Maggie Blyth, independent chair of the Oxfordshire safeguarding children board, said there were grounds for believing that 373 girls had been sexually exploited across Oxfordshire in the past 15 years.

One police officer recorded that a 13-year-old having sex with an older Asian man was in an “age-appropriate relationship”. Another sergeant described how a 14-year-old girl had initiated sexual intercourse with two men. Social workers, the report said, appeared to tolerate the under-age sex the girls were having with much older men.

The report called on the government to examine whether its guidance on the age of consent fed attitudes that made it easier for perpetrators to abuse victims.

“The overall problem was not grasping the nature of the abuse – the grooming, the pull from home, the erosion of consent, the inability to escape and the sheer horror of what the girls were going through – but of seeing it as something done more voluntarily. Something that the girls did as opposed to something done to them,” the report said.
[...]
The report said key failings by police and social workers included:

A culture of denial;
Blaming the girls for their precocious and difficult behaviour;
Blaming the girls for putting themselves at risk of harm;
Tolerance of underage sexual activity by the girls with older men;
A failure to recognise the girls had been groomed and violently controlled.
Such was the nature of the sexual exploitation and abuse suffered by the girls, who all had backgrounds in care, that it was likened to torture. The abuse took place in Oxford, in a guest house or in parks and churchyards, and the girls were plied with drugs and subjected to gang rape and sexual atrocities for more than eight years between 2004 and 2012.

The report highlighted multiple missed opportunities by Thames Valley police and Oxfordshire social services to act rigorously.

These included a neighbourhood city council official who in February 2007 raised concerns with senior police officers and children’s social services manages about a 13-year-old girl. He reported “men going into the flat every night” and said he saw the child lying under a cover with an adult male. But he was reprimanded by city council officials after an intervention by the head of child social care in Oxfordshire county council – who was not named in the report. The then director of children’s services in the council – also not named in the report - was copied into the emails.

Not to worry, though. We can put it all behind us and there is no reason for heads to roll among dedicated public servants who did what they thought was best at the time.

quote:

Despite damning findings in the 114-page report, no one has been disciplined or sacked over the child protection failures.
[...]
The report failed to hold any senior managers or directors accountable, saying there was no evidence of “wilful professional misconduct” and senior managers were not made aware of what was going on. Instead she blamed lack of knowledge and understanding and organisational failings.

Middle managers in social services, however, gave evidence that they were afraid to escalate concerns amid an “oppressive culture” within the council at the time.

None whatsoever

Police investigating 1,400 suspects in VIP child sex abuse inquiry

Police across the country are investigating more than 1,400 men – including 261 high profile individuals – over historic child sex abuse allegations, a senior officer running the national operation has revealed.

The scale of alleged child abuse across society – both recent and non-recent – was stark, said chief constable Simon Bailey, who runs Operation Hydrant, the national coordinating team overseeing the various inquiries.

Figures from police forces in England and Wales published on Wednesday reveal that 1,433 men have been identified in reports of alleged abuse by victims, since Operation Hydrant, the overarching inquiry into non-recent abuse, was set up in 2014.

Of these 216 are dead, 76 are politicians, both national and local figures, 43 are from the music industry, 135 from TV, film or radio and seven from the world of sport. The cases include recent high profile convictions, including Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter and Max Clifford.

Hundreds of institutions have been identified by victims of non recent abuse as places where their abuse took place. These include 154 schools, 75 children’s homes, 40 religious institutions, 14 medical establishments, 11 community groups, nine prisons or young offender institutions, nine sports venues and 28 other places including military establishments.

Bailey warned that the number of victims could run into the hundreds of thousands, and called for much more support for survivors of child abuse. He said he believed that the enormous increase in reports of all types of child sexual abuse – which have risen by 71% to 116,000 reports in three years – was not just down to more victims coming forward.

Instead, Bailey warned that the internet was creating the opportunity for more abuse to take place, and said live streaming of child abuse on mobile phones was the next challenge facing law enforcers.

Bailey said the number of reports of abuse, both by adults of historical abuse, and by children today, was increasing on a daily basis, and the figures released on Wednesday were just a snapshot of the challenge faced by both the police and society as a whole.

He supported calls for much more funding for victims of child abuse. “The government has allocated millions of pounds to provide additional support, but I am not sure that is going to be enough. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of victims,” he said.

Well yes, but it's fairly obvious that Sheridan was abusing the process - if he'd asked a low profile witness whether they'd committed any given crime they could have told him to shove it and there'd be very few repercussions for them. If Coulson had given any answer but the negative, it would have had a serious effect on his career and the business he was working for, as well as shattering his credibility as a witness at the trial.

Put it another way - if a politician was giving evidence at a trial, and was asked whether they'd ever taken drugs or abused their expenses, would that be fair? Even though the information is in the public interest, the wider ramification is that fewer people would be willing to bear witness at a trial if they were forced to perjure or incriminate themselves over any damned thing that crossed a lawyer's mind.

Good news for everyone who still has fond memories of Rolf Harris.

quote:

A song in which Rolf Harris reportedly slurs his victims as “slimy little woodworm” has prompted calls for the disgraced children’s entertainer to be denied parole.

Harris, who was convicted last year of indecently assaulting young women and girls, wrote down the lyrics in a letter penned in jail, obtained by the Mail on Sunday. In the song, he accuses the victims, the youngest of whom was just eight when he attacked her, of being after his money, writing: “Come and join the feeding frenzy, girls.”

The victims’ lawyer, Liz Dux, said she had spoken to one of them and was told her feelings were of “total revulsion”.

“I am calling for this letter to be shown to the parole board and for it to be taken into account when deciding when to release him,” Dux, from law firm Slater & Gordon, told BBC Radio 4.

“The whole point of parole is for people to show some sort of remorse and understanding of their actions when they return into society and here is someone who is clearly behaving as he was before, with complete disdain and an attitude that he can behave how he wants.”

Harris was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison at Southwark crown court in London last July, after being found guilty of 12 indecent assaults dating between 1968 and 1986. In the letter, which the MoS said it got from one of the 84-year-old’s friends who was appalled by it, Harris writes that he plans to record the song when “I get out towards the end of 2017”.

The Australian-born TV star and artist, a fixture of popular entertainment for six decades, rails about the “injustice” he has suffered but describes prison as “no hardship really”. In the song lyrics, he describes his victims as “foul accusers”, writing: “Perhaps you believe you’re pretty still, some perfumed sultry wench.”

That toe tapping number in full, for people who don't feel like browsing the Daily Heil:

The horrible part of the "Asian rape gangs" aspect of the story is that they're just the ones who are easiest to catch. I think the profile for either Rotherham or Gloucester was of first generation migrants targeting vulnerable children they weren't related to - in other words, the exact sort of person that the 80s campaigns (spearheaded by Savile and Harris :ironicat:) told you to say "NO!" to. These were men with no power over their victims beyond physical threats and little power in the community to hamper investigations. It still took years to catch them. There was a body of evidence building up over years that was being completely ignored by the authorities in the area. It wasn't a case of institutional coverup, it was a case of people not doing their loving jobs.

In related news, another moderately high profile conviction today: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jun/24/anne-lakey-jailed-underage-sex-teacher-eight-years

quote:

A former high-flying headteacher has been jailed for eight years for having sex with two underage boys in the 1980s.

Anne Lakey, 55, from Stanley, County Durham, had won national acclaim for improving schools, but her successful career hid a sordid past. She took the virginity of two boys aged 13-14 and another aged 15 when she was in her late 20s and working as a history and RE teacher in Sunderland. Police believe there could be more victims of Lakey.

Man, remember that teacher you used to fancy in school? Wouldn't it have been great to...

quote:

One of the victims in his statement branded her a “dirty pervert”, adding: “As a kid I thought it was great what was happening, but now I see it for what it was – wrong.” The other victim said: “I realise I was a victim of sexual exploitation and I feel a sense of shame that I allowed myself to be in that position.”

And outside court Aelf Sampson, a detective inspector, said: “Throughout the investigation we have been aware that there may be other people involved in this inquiry who may come forward as victims and we would like them to make the approach to us.”

Speaking about the two victims, she said: “At the time they may have thought it was fine but over the years they have come to realise how very, very, wrong it actually is, and it’s been very tough for them come forward and brave of them to give evidence.

“They’ve seen her have a successful glittering career, they’ve seen her be praised by government around her position, which was described as inspirational, and I think that did make it harder for them to come forward.”

Ironically, her success had spurred on the first victim to make his allegation, with him “seeing her be so successful and thinking this isn’t right,” the detective said.

:smith:

quote:

In her career Lakey held the position of chief executive of the Durham Federation, in charge of two secondary schools. She was a national leader in education, lauded for improving pupils’ exam performance. She oversaw change at Fyndoune community college, in Sacriston, which had been failing and which went on to be rated as outstanding.

She was also named in a Department for Education pamphlet as a “visionary leader” and described as inspiring by Sir Michael Wilshaw, the chief inspector of education.

...

Crowson told Lakey: “You used subtle persuasion and flattery, encouraging each boy to take his first tentative sexual steps with you.” He said that during her career she had been “an inspirational teacher and leader of schools”, adding “by your efforts it is clear you have improved the lives of many young people”.

Hooray?

Obligatory :nms: horrors:

quote:

The success ended when the younger victim sent an accusing email to school in December 2012, which led to Lakey being suspended and prosecuted. He said that while she was married to her second husband she groomed him and he was encouraged to expose her breasts during a dare game at her home. She let him watch her bathe, then took his virginity on the marital bed while he was still in his school uniform.

Lakey phoned his school when he was truanting, pretended to be his mother and saying he was sick. She also encouraged him to call her “mommy”.

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/jun/28/gordonstoun-child-sex-abuse-search-for-victims

quote:

Official files on police investigations of child abuse at Gordonstoun, the school in the Scottish Highlands that educated the Queen’s sons and Prince Philip, appear to have gone missing or been destroyed.

In a case investigated by the Observer, a teacher named Derek Jones seriously sexually assaulted a number of children attending the junior school around 1990. He was twice questioned by police in the following years after the children told their parents what had happened. Files were forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal, Scotland’s prosecution service, but it was decided not to prosecute. The files would normally be retained, but Scotland’s Crown Office says they now cannot be found.

[abridged for horrors]

He told his parents about the assault a year later. His family went to the local police, who mounted an investigation and assured them that a prosecution would happen because other complaints had been received about Jones. But shortly before the court date, the Procurator Fiscal told the boy’s mother that there would be no prosecution. No reason was given.

Findlay believes that Jones did go on to teach again. He has already served a freedom of information request on Police Scotland. He asked the force to reveal the details of all their inquiries at the time of Jones’s assault on him, first detailed in an Observer magazine investigation in April that also uncovered allegations of the rapes of two 12-year-old girls at Aberlour House.

The FOI request was refused on grounds of privacy and excessive cost. Findlay plans to appeal. “If there has been a tradition of abuse and cover-up anywhere children are looked after by people who aren’t their parents, it needs to be known by the public,” he says.

The Procurator Fiscal’s office told the Observer: “We do not have a record of a case against Derek Jones on the system and we are unable to establish at this stage if we did receive a report from the police and if so what the reason was for not prosecuting.”

But police in Elgin have assured the victims that files did go to the prosecutor, and found the reference number of one of the original complaints.

The Procurator Fiscal’s office said that such files would normally be kept, even if the decision was made not to proceed with a prosecution. But the cases all precede computerisation of the prosecutors’ archive.

The office was unable to say whether all records relating to abuse complaints at Gordonstoun, of which there have been several since the 1970s, had gone missing or just the documents that were concerned with the Jones allegations.

In England and Scotland, lost police files have been a recurring problem in the current wave of revelations around historical abuse in childcare institutions.

How mysterious and inconvenient.

As I've said before, the gangs in Rochdale and Rotherham were just the easiest to catch - they were groups that weren't dug into the British establishment and didn't have a great degree of power in their own area. The establishment wasn't actively acting on their behalf - it was a combination of laziness, underfunding, good old fashioned victim blaming and no-one wanting to admit that there actually was a problem for various reasons. The actual abusers, so far as I could bear looking into it, were just a bit more sophisticated than a man in a trenchcoat saying he's got more sweeties in his van.

They weren't abusing kids because they were Muslims, they got caught because they were first generation migrants. If it was that bloody hard to catch them, imagine what a councillor, a policeman or a businessman could get away with.

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jun/28/lord-janner-face-trial-dpp-ruling-overturned-sexual-abuse-allegations

quote:

Pressure is growing on the director of public prosecutions, Alison Saunders, to resign after her decision not to charge Lord Janner with a string of sexual abuse charges dating back to the 1960s was overturned in a review by an independent QC.

Janner is to face justice in a trial of the facts following a review from an unnamed QC, the Crown Prosecution Service will announce on Monday.

It will be the first time that allegations against Janner – which have been investigated in the past in three failed police investigations – will be aired in a courtroom.

Saunders said in April it was not in the public interest to charge Janner, because he had dementia, which meant he was unfit to enter a plea. Her decision was challenged by alleged victims in a formal process known as the right to review. It is believed to be one of the first times that alleged victims have overturned a DPP’s decision.

Freddie Starr groped a 15-year-old girl while she was attending a Jimmy Savile show 41 years ago, a high court judge has found.

Mr Justice Nicol dismissed a claim by the 72-year-old entertainer for slander and libel against Karin Ward on Friday, “because her words were true”.

Starr sued Ward, now 57, over interviews she gave to the BBC and ITV, and statements on a website and in an ebook, in which she saidhe assaulted her in Savile’s dressing room and called her a “titless wonder”.

In May last year, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided not to go ahead with criminal proceedings against Starr in relation to allegations by Ward and a further 13 complainants.

I wonder if charges will be brought now, considering. The proceedings brought up a lot of things that are now a matter of legal record.

quote:

Ward had told the court that Starr, who was not present for the ruling, had attempted to give her what was known as “a goose”. This occurred when a man “would put his hand under a girl’s buttocks and give it a squeeze and usually say ‘goose’ and, at the same time, reach for her breasts and say ‘honk, honk,’” she said.

Who is potentially shadowed by this theoretical list?

At the moment, the whole drat government, paedo or no, is threatened. One of the reasons the police are being so hush-hush with names is that being caught up in this scandal (even if not actively involved or later found to be not culpable in any way) is obviously so politically poisonous as to destroy careers. Slinging around names of high profile politicians is dicey at the best of times, but with the Tory party holding a tiny majority of 12 MPs, there's a chance that this scandal could take down a sitting government if anyone currently in a high profile position is involved.

Any government can normally expect to lose a few MPs during it's run through ill health, death or resignations through the more mundane forms of scandal. By-elections are used as an opportunity for opposition parties to prey on weakness in the current government, and as such are prone to high intensity shock campaigning. Losing even a couple of sitting politicians at the wrong time could theoretically trigger a chain reaction that forces a mid term coalition or even a collapse in government.
