I admire this games dedication to unoriginality! Also pixel art=cube figures is the laziest poo poo in the world and never pretty, but that's just a personal opinion. I've always supported "clones" and slight iterations in games because it usually ends up becoming a new genre rather then just clones. But the minecraft aping is sad and depressing to a level where i'm actually starting to wish each new game that just straight up rips the world structure and color scheme will just tank horribly, just so that the next guy in line might hesitate some before inevitably releasing his own lovely rip. How uninspired are you as an artist if you don't feel that maybe your game could go with at least some slight variation to the straight up green/brown/gray block color scheme. And don't you dare try to make excuses for that poo poo. That said, i don't know jack all about this game beyond how it looks, maybe there are good aspects too it, but looks alone make me wish i knew even less.

Since you took time to make that post, it'd probably help if you just took the time to watch a recent video. It's more like a voxel based 3D Zelda with some sandbox features than Minecraft (outside of the endless terrain.) I don't even think he's classifying the game as sandbox as his reason for avoiding beta/alpha copies was it was something you're suppose to finish/beat. Personally, the graphics for a voxel based game look pretty personalized to me as much as voxels can get and the terrain itself generally looks pretty instead of huge blocks with 16x16 textures.

To be fair, it is riding on the coattails of Minecraft's success. I highly doubt the game would be successful if it had an art style other than voxels.

I think it looks neat, but I'm not really that much into the "giant, empty world with not really much to do in it but dick around" genre, and for all the rolling and dodging you can do, it doesn't really look like there's much need for strategy going by the combat in the videos. Now if you could set up scenarios on a server and be like a dungeon master, or if those big monsters had like Colossus or Dragon's Dogma type weak points that you needed to climb on and exploit to kill them, that would be pretty badass.

Grass is Green, Dirt is Brown, Stone is gray, I'm not sure what more he could do there, especially if he was trying to make something look kind of similar to earth, on top of that, I think it looks a lot better then Minecraft, which has those huge ugly 16 bit textures that make me vomit. I haven't really seen all that many MC clones, I don't suppose you could point me to a few, "It's Minecraft! But not Minecraft!" If you were coding a game, (using a different engine then minecraft is mind you,) what colors would you use for Grass, Dirt, and Stone? Average Bear posted:To be fair, it is riding on the coattails of Minecraft's success. I highly doubt the game would be successful if it had an art style other than voxels. I guess it uses huge, coarse voxels if you use a very loose definition of "voxel". FreelanceSocialist fucked around with this message at 14:47 on Oct 19, 2012 |

I had this page open an hour ago. This is not Kleaveland, which while my point stands, I am definitely wrong as far as the Voxel Engine is concerned. This game doesn't have building like Minecraft does though, so that's different.

This looks pretty neat. I hope they continue to develop it, too bad that there won't be mining or digging it it. I actually enjoy that stuff, but if that's not the kind of game it is then so be it.

It's amusing to me watching the goon reaction of this compared to the game Starbound. While both take heavy inspiration from their spiritual predecessors many of you folks seem to be making GBS threads yourself in agitation about this game while presumably printing out screen grabs of Starbound for your private time in the bathroom. What's the difference? Nerd hype? This game looks pretty cool, and I don't even like Minecraft or most RPGs. I quite like the environments, I'd get this game just to wander off and see what I could find.

Double post, but Wollay put up another blog post. Mostly screenshots, but there's a bit of new information.Wollay posted:- There is now a clearly arranged overview map showing lands and levels. The player can switch between the voxel map and the overview map. Quests are also gone, as it wasn't possible to get them working in a way that didn't hinder freedom and wasn't repetitive. Characters are also independent of worlds, similar to how Terraria did its characters and worlds. Screenshots continue to look great:

I made this thread thinking that since Wollay had just posted a video for his game, we might actually get some updates that weren't just more screenshots. I was wrong and wish I could stop dreaming about this game now.

That looks so nice, I really hope he cracks on and does a release at some point. This and Starbound really have dished out some blue balls from showing good stuff and making us wait so long Watching the video made me laugh again in memory of that really awful post at the top of page 2 from the chap who had looked at one screenshot and made a lengthy rant on how it was the worst most derivative game ever and how it was just gray/green/brown.

It's not like Minecraft. I'm really excited for this game. The art style is really charming and the combat and customisation look pretty solid if you ask me. I'm glad that Wollay is taking his time to polish it before setting a release date, despite me really wanting to be able to play it. The hang gliders were a fantastic idea!

The lack of that bullshit makes it all the more appealing to me, it looks like a pretty awesome thing to just explore and maybe kill some monsters along the way. This looks pretty neat, sort of a spiritual opposite to Starbound which evolves the Terraria formula, whereas this goes in a different direction and puts it into a 3D world. I really hope they'll try to get this on Steam, I can't imagine they'd have any trouble going through Greenlight.

international owl day posted:This game would be huge if there was an open beta right now. This is what got me about the Starbound kickstarter. The developers said they were shocked at how much money they made off of it, but I think anyone who saw how well Minecraft and Terraria did could see that they were going to be instant millionaires. It would be pretty hard for me not to release a paid alpha/beta version of a game like this if I was making one. I would at least do a kickstarter so I could quit my job and work on the game full time. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that someone else (or a ton of people, judging from the Minecraft clones) will rip off your idea or just release a similar and better game, and cut into the basically guaranteed millions of dollars you are sitting on. I also think it is crazy to just have a blog that is updated a few times a year instead of a website with small daily updates and forums to hype the hell out of the game.

The developer is working on a dedicated website for it. Apparently it's mostly done but some content has to be added and it will be finished "soon". I would love a beta for it, I'd happily put some money down as it looks pretty drat playable at the moment. Unless he's just picking the best parts to go in his videos.

Don't forget all the minecraft clones on the Xbox indie thing either!
