Phoebe St. Clair - Marysville Station

"Follow the road? In those conditions?" Phoebe rubbed her temples, trying to force herself back to calmness. "Are you out of your mind, Starshine? We've got no idea what's out there. We have no concept at all of enemy forces except they exist, they've got big claws, and they kill quick. We have no idea where it goes. We would be walking into the absolute unknown, and for what? We have a secure position here. We have light here. If you want to go take your chances out there, fine, but don't drag the rest of us out with you."

She sighed. "Better yet, don't take your chances at all. Learn from Laguna."

Mayla Relshan - Marysville Station

Remaining seated, Mayla turned to Morgan and shouted. "You're crazy! That's stupid!" Her voice was shaky and full of fear.

Mayla wouldn't have gone into the fog in the dark even if those beasts weren't out there. As a member of a race of timid herbivores, she knew better than to leave herself vulnerable to predators. But these predators weren't anything like she was used to. Back home, the beasts of the night couldn't kill a man nearly as fast. In this strange land, it was worse. So much worse.

"I am staying right here. I am not leaving until it is light outside and the fog has cleared."

And then where would she go? She's a long way from home...

"Something must give eventually, though," notes the doctor, looking more or less recovered from her momentary bout of anger. It was...uncharacteristic, really - why was this time different from all other times? Why should she have been so angry? She did not even know the man, really. But then, this place, these people...none of it made much sense; perhaps she was still a bit shaken. She was not in Kansas anymore. He'd said it was Kansas, not Iowa, right? The least she could do is remember that.

Right now, though, what was important was to focus. To find a sense of direction for the group such that nothing like what just happened would repeat. "We can't stay here forever. For now, though, I do agree - unless things change, we ought not to go back out there like that. No one goes anywhere alone. And perhaps we could set up a barricade for the door as well."

"Unless we can drag those benches around, I don't see much around here that we could use to block off the doors," Phoebe said. There was a lot of empty space in the station, understandable for a place designed to house large numbers of travellers, but that put prospective defenders at a distinct disadvantage. "If we can at least put together a defensible position, a hardpoint or something like it, we'd still be fairly well off. Think about it, though... this place doesn't seem like it should be empty. It's still got power. Maybe there's something around we could use to call for help... though I don't particularly relish the explanations we'll need if the vigil shows up."

"Well..." With an oddly conspiratorial smirk, Karima points over towards the ticket office. "There's probably a phone or a computer or both in there." She pantomimes the act of using a telephone. This particular plan of action couldn't possibly uncover a potentially fatal surprise twice in a row, could it? "The last time we broke down a door, though, everyone got mad."

Mayla has no objections other than a disdainful "Hmmph."

She then lies down on her blanket, gun clutched to her chest. What does it matter if the others break the law at this point? Who knows if the fog is even going to clear? Maybe day will never come. At this rate, everyone is going to be eaten by those beasts.

"Doctor, with all due respect, we're not just explorers anymore--there are monsters out there, no exaggeration. I don't think anyone would look too unkindly on a bit of improvisational unlocking at this point."

She holstered her pistol and took her mobile vox out of its pouch. "I doubt I'll get a signal on this, but I'll give it a go anyway. If not, well, let's hope there's something around here that'll bring in the dragoons."

Phoebe checks for any reception on her cell phone. Even one bar would be something.

Astra fires her laser pistol along with the rest, adding to the fusillade against the creature. The rest's a blur. She gets back inside, somehow, but as the others talk she just winds up sitting in a corner, legs curled up, shaking to herself.

"That is a fair point." Looking around the room at the others - and noticing the obvious distress of at least a couple of the refugees - Karima shakes her head. "And we need some good news soon." Regardless of whether there was anything in the ticket office of any use, she was going to also have to spend some time looking after everyone else. Mental trauma was almost as dangerous in a crisis as the physical kind, after all...and everyone here, herself included, had suffered it. Indeed it's entirely possible her outburst earlier might have made things worse. "I'll make the rounds and check on the others in a moment, but I want to have that door open first."

When Phoebe pulls out her phone, Karima is dumbfounded - they've been here this long and no one had thought to check to see if cell phones work? She almost laughs at her own stupidity. "Let me know if it works." she says simply, before briskly walking over to the door to the ticket office. She checks the lock just to be sure, then turns back towards the rest of the room. "Could someone cover me with a light? I'm going to see if there's anything that can help us in here."

Marysville Station

When cell phones are checked, they show no reception. The area seems to be a dead zone in more ways then one. Karima finds the door to the ticket room. It is locked.

In front another shape appears in the fog. This new shape doesn't hide in the fog. Instead he makes his way to the Marysville station.

"No reception," Phoebe says as she powers down her vox. "Not that I expected anything different. All right, Dr. Action, looks like we're going to have to--"

A flicker of motion from the fog attracts her attention. There's another shadow out there, indistinct, but getting closer. She sweeps her pistol into her hands.

"Movement outside!" she says. "Can't tell if it's one of those clapperclaws or not. Let's hope not."

"Doctor Action?" She starts to grin, but stops when Phoebe mentions more movement outside. "Merde. Everybody up! Come on." She walks over towards the front door, a hand on the holster at her side, but she elects not to draw as yet. Karima never wanted to be in a situation where her only option was to draw first.

The Vulture RAU had been following the wild human for a while, it had been communicating with the local SAU. Apparently, this one had been suspected on leading a raid on the Denver Zone, and it was going to be followed to its hive. Wild humans tended to cluster but for the last day it had not. The local SAU sent the word to purify it, as it was deemed to be too close to the Organic Processing Center. The Vulture started buzzing the wild human and spraying the nanoburn neural toxin. The Vulture makes a circle shape of the sickly looking red crowd around as the wild human vanishes into a fog that rolled in as the sun set.

He was ready for the nanoburn, but the important part was getting away. The Vulture meant that tinmen had a bead on him. He knew that they were going to start dropping exterminators, or worse, actual smartbots. He emerged from the fog hopeful that the AI would circle the same drat area and make it toxic for the next 40 years instead of it outright killing him. There were a few bushes and it looked like actual grass surrounding a cave, Ethan took about a second to decide, before dashing into the cave. The caves had him stay safe, but who the gently caress knew if this one was safe.

Dashing into the darkness, he wanted to move as fast as possible, after all there could be Vermin or a Hovercat in here. He had lost his loving night vision getting out of Denver. At least, the things chasing him were tigers with robotic parts. He shivered as he ran down the tunnel, until he reached the end, and then he crouched, panting at his exertion. Safety first, taught that back in the day of Radio Free Earth, He looks left then right into the opening, as far as he could see it was clear. He stands up straight and steps toward the light.

"A loving street lamp?" He looks in shock, Vancouver didn't like power running unless they were camps or facs. He looks a bit more carefully around and slowly steps toward the light again. This time he kneels down and examines blood stain on the ground, "Looks sloppy, loving cyberbeast follow me all the way loving denver zone?" He thinks bitterly. He pokes at the blood and rubs it between his fingers. This was fresh, and the cyberbeasts didn't really hunt silently. He would be quiet as a loving mouse now on.

Finally sure that there was no zoneganger or exterminator trap, he steps out of the fog into the light. His body concealed by his worn and torn armor, the only identifying mark on his clothes a big red V on his shoulder. His back a litter of guns an almost alien one in his arms. His face obscured by a what appears to be a gas mask, its filters ragged and a bit worn, as if they were remade. His helmet dented and worn along with the rest of his outfit. His backpack appeared to be heavy on his back, but his step light and methodical. He was in the light and knew it. He stops looking at the Marysfield sign and cocks his head.

"loving Washington Zone? Great now I have loving WASPs to worry about, I wonder how close to Boston this is." He whispers to himself. He shakes his head and moves into the covered area, his eyes toward the fog. After all if this was an outpost they would have opened fired at a crazyhorse, and it wasn't like he had loving papers. He hits a button on his rifle, and it lights up oddly, a screen appearing in front of it complaining in red. After a while the screen disappears and the gun rests in his hands hovering, He slowly turns his masked face toward the building, not expecting an old human residence to be brightly lit AND filled with anything.

Phoebe St. Clair - Marysville Station

Phoebe lowered her pistol in relief. It was a human that staggered out of the fog, not another one of those murderous beasts. The echo of the bullets that had torn apart Laguna's killer still echoed in her ears, loud enough for more than one night. She holstered her weapon and hurried to the door.

"Get inside, come on!" she shouted at the stranger while she held the door open. "Double time if you want to see tomorrow in one piece!"

The voices and people from the store made him jump. "People here? Calling for me? This is a loving trap or they are idiots." He looks at them and shakes his head making a circle motion with his hands, before putting a finger up to his filter. He then points to his V on his patch and looks at them curiously. Even a loving Washington Zone idiot knows of VIRUS... and knows the heat that would be caused by taking him in. He wanted to make drat sure they knew, so he could make sure to bail on them before the exterminators came.

She turns back to the door to find the stranger making strange gestures. She slaps her forehead and raises her voice.

"Look, we don't have time for fingertalking, all right? If you can understand me, just get yourself inside and we'll deal with the details later. If you'd rather take your chances with monsters that turns folk to groundmeat, you're perfectly welcome to stay outside while we keep the doors locked. Unless you've got a death wish, I seriously wouldn't recommend it."

He crouches down and walks slowly, toward the door, checking each exit, before moving his mask and whispering harshly. "Be quiet. Stop Yelling. Vulture in air." He knew it was a loving trap now, but he didn't have a choice the fog wasn't too helpful for cover anymore, and blood meant bad things. He moves into the door keeping his back away from the others, if there was a redjack it might come out now. He moves with his back against the near wall and glances out the door.

Karima

Since it looks like Phoebe, Austin and Vri have the door covered, Karima takes a step or two towards Astra. The space pilot didn't seem to be holding up well. And since Operation: Invade Ticket Office was on hold, now was as good a time as any to start tending to the psychological wounds from Captain America's death. "Shh. The thing that killed Laguna is dead. It's alright, that part's over, that thing can't hurt anyone anymore. Take it easy for a little while, okay? It'll be hard, but try to relax." Smiling warmly, she adds, "Besides. If it was a real monster, you don't think we'd let it in, do you?"

Phoebe St. Clair - Marysville Station

Phoebe watched the skittish stranger move around the station with pity. Had she acted half as bezzled when she'd stumbled out of the fog? She recognized the caution of a soldier--what sort of world had he walked out of that he needed to stand on such an edge?

"Then I'll just talk nice and ordinary," she said, once the door was safely closed again. "I'm Phoebe St. Clair. I'm not sure what it is that was after you, but I can tell you that it's not going to follow you here. Do you mind telling me your name, or whereabouts you were headed when that fog blew up?"

He moves his mask a bit to let his mouth speak clearly, "Only have Ethan, headed to slave camp to get my folk. Most likely sterilized and processed, but you know tinmen." He looked back and forth between all of them including the smart bot, that was interesting. He jerks his thumb toward the big one and nods "That one? Is it hacked? Or are you all WASPs, and do I have Chrome on the way?" No use with the bullshit, either they were trying to lull him into a sense of security or not, he was outnumbered and out armed, he was just a progger. No way he could kill them all before they killed him.

Astra

She's been rebuked and ignored and, in the end, maybe it's better that way, to be dismissed rather than considered mad. Astra hasn't even taken off her helmet. She does now, rather sheepishly. "Are you sure?" she asks, sliding her helmet onto her back. "I've flown ships, I've built reactors. Why does a gunfight freak me out so much?"

Bus Stop

The two people in the bus stop with exceptional sense of smells pick up a strange odor. It isn't his odor, but something on his clothes that smells strange. The first thought that flashes through their minds is that it is the smell of death. He seems to have been coated with some kind of chemical poison.

Tinmen? WASPs? Slave camps? Phoebe shudders. The idea of travel between multiple Earths was still fighting for purchase in her brain, but it went without saying that more Earths only presented all the more opportunities for oppression. Not even the Swedes were callous enough to sterilize the political prisoners it shoveled into the northwestern labor camps.

"All right then, Ethan," Phoebe says in as soothing a tone as she could manage. "I know this is going to come as a bit unbelievable, but it's the honest truth. Wherever this place is... you're not in your own world anymore. None of us are. We all got blown here by the fog, just like you."

Phoebe takes out the folded copy of the New York Times from her backpack. "Here, take a look at this. Like they say, you're not in Iowa any more."

Karima

Shaking her head sympathetically, the doctor leans against the wall nearby. "Well, it is different when someone is trying to kill you. A plane - a ship - those are just machines, they have no ill will, yes?" Ironic, considering the newcomer, but Karima didn't know that yet - so instead she chuckles. "No one likes getting shot at, being in danger, but sometimes life takes us to these places, and we learn to survive. Bad people do bad things. Good people persevere, whether they do it in Allah's name or for their own reasons." Sighing, she adds, "Soon, everyone else here is probably going to need your help. Everyone here needs everyone else, right now. I think you will be okay. But I need you to believe that. Let yourself be afraid, and then let it go. Okay?"

Overhearing Phoebe from over near the door, she looks in that direction. "It's Kansas, I think, Ms. St. Clair. Not Iowa. That's what Captain America said, right?"

Ethan - Marysville Station

He pulls his mask back, and looks at the smartbot, no AI. This could be good, he thinks a moment his mask blocking any expression from his face. He then reads the newspaper, he flips through the newspaper somewhat bored, this was all fantasy. He then looks to the... he didn't quite know. If it was not an AI then this could be very very bad, but also very good. He decided to take the middle ground. He pushed his mask forward again.

"Okay, this is fine. Lets say we aren't in Vancouver zone. Which side are you all on? This other worlds bullshit can't have me be the only one where the tinmen won?" He looks from face to face, if he came through then someone else might have. A redjack, a Lilith, maybe a cyberbeast. He wasn't going to mince words.

The large creature hissed at him that he had poison on him and he cocked his head to the side. "This Nanoburn? Harmless, maybe not if you expect to live forever, but if you aren't all rolling on the ground, then frozen, then dust you'll be fine. Those nanomachines need the right concentration in you with the poison to kill you." He looks at her like she was talking about the strangest thing on earth.

"The only side I'm on is the Commonwealth of Virginia's side," Phoebe says, "and I wouldn't be surprised if you've never heard of it. I'm pretty confident that Vancouver Zone, whatever it is, is far enough away from here that we won't have to worry about it. As for that nanoburn... can't say I'm eager to write off anything that has 'burn' in the name as completely harmless."

Phoebe turns to Astra. "Hey, Peregrine, mind giving that super-scanner of yours a wave, make sure there's nothing unpleasant drifting around?"

Morgan

Another person walks out of the fog, and of all things, starts talking about tin men?

"Tinmen? What would those be? Also, to everyone else, are we going to simply stand here, or shall we barricade, since nobody else wants to walk? If people are going to continue walking out of the fog, I'm not sure if we can assume that additional people will choose to not try and enslave us or kill us... I begin to suspect that the thing that killed Laguna was another traveler. And that makes this all the more dangerous."

"Uh...right? Physics....isn't really out to get us," Astra says, making a face. "Makes me feel out of place, everybody else seems to handle it," she says. "Even you. Doctors don't get shot at."

Astra turns at Phoebe's arrival, thankful for the distraction at the very least. "Astra," she corrects. "My name's Astra. My ship's....was...Peregrine. Nasty? If the chlorine were still around my biosensors would have gone off, so....unless some of you react to different things than I do, we're fine there. What are you looking for?"

"Sorry, Astra it is," Phoebe said. "Our new friend Ethan says he's got something on his clothes, calls it 'nanoburn.' Doesn't exactly have the friendliness of an ecologically-sound detergent. Would you be able to tell if there's anything around that's dangerous, other than too much chlorine?"

She turns to Morgan. "If you can find something we can use to put together a strongpoint, be my guest. I was thinking about it anyway. I don't know if it would be wise to block off the doors completely, though."

"They do when they are doctors in a warzone. I was, but that's a story for another day," retorts Dr. Bishara, though without the bitterness that might be expected given those particular memories. Satisfied that Astra is beginning to come around, she spares a glance at Morgan. "I'm not willing to risk turning away someone who's in need...though you're right we should be cautious. A barricade or some sort of improved position might be good, I thought about it before as well, but we need to be able to let people in if we need to. Anyway," she adds at both of them, "I will be right back."

After that, she walks slowly over to Mayla, who she'd also intended to check on. The silence from the previously talkative (if annoying) one was beginning to worry the resident Semite, and Mayla had been hunkered down silently for a little while now. "Hey," says Karima softly. "Are you okay? Do you need to talk?"

Ethan

Looking around the station he takes stock of things, his back still against the wall, he looks at the large creature. "Squirrels are good to eat. Rat though gives you more options, less gamey. What are you, if not an AI?" He looks around again, and flips through the newspaper, he hadn't had a book to read in a while, and with the AI's they tend to write it the same drat way. He shook his head, until he heard the word "What is a tinman." Then he laughed.

The low coarse laughter seemed more like coughing but even that was done is an almost whisper. It was like Ethan had spent his life talking as quietly as possible, and he answered the man's question. "AI, Artificial Intelligence. They released the 4 big plagues then the vaccines so we gave them the military bots. Thats when they attacked, anyone they couldn't get down fast they nuked, and well those they could? Well wished they had been nuked. Now, the lucky ones get in camps, the worst ones..." He looks off in the distance and stops talking.

They had been in tubes at all around him, each one without a top of their head, just a little neural bundle. Glass in their bellies... producing. Captain had taken lead and was shooting them, had to be sure they couldn't be factories. They had been women once goddamn it. He wasn't a shooter, he stayed back with the tech guys, as always, setting explosives. Had to take them down, drat this had already happened. That is when the beast started howling, the redjacks had been there all along. They turned and shot Captain in the back. He was raising his rifle and aiming.

Then he was back, he had gone silent for a full ten seconds, and suddenly jerks his head. "What? Tinmen, they are bad, they are bad." He turns off his rifle, a red error messege flashing before it turns off.

Phoebe purses her lips, sinking into thought for a moment. Artificial intelligence conquering the world--what, like the intelligent calculaters from those ridiculous Brazilian scientifiction vitas? Dammit, I'm not an alienist. What am I supposed to do for this guy? What can I do?

"It sounds like you've been through a hell of a lot," Phoebe says. "Stuff that I can't even begin to understand. Now that you're here, though... I think we can help you out. There's a lavatory over there you can use to wash up, and afterward Dr. Bishara can check you out, if you've got any problems that need to be checked. Just calm down. There aren't any tinmen here."

Astra moves away with Phoebe, towards their new guest. Some might think she looks rather like a robot, with her tight suit, heavy boots and gloves and her pack of high-tech equipment. Once piece gets removed from her belt and held up. "We should be able to detect any nanites on him, at least any the scanner knows about. We usually only use them for basic industrial processes back home."
