Monastery of St. Leibowitz the Chosen "I read a lot. There's a library here. Most of the books are in a form of German infused Latin that I've learned to read since my time here. I've collected other books in my time here as well. You're welcome to check out the library if you want. Don't know if you'll be able to read the books though. Other times I'll wander the halls. I find its good to keep track of the place just in case it changes on me or something. And when the isolation gets too much for me, I do know one or two doors that lead to bars."

Mayla Relshan - Monastery Dining Room "Well, I love reading, but I would not be able to read that language. However... Monastery of St. Leibowitz the Chosen The group goes about spending the rest of the day before they sleep doing various activities. Mayla looks at the illuminated manuscripts in the library. Occasionally she can make out words and phrases in the books. Distressingly, she finds that nearly all of the books are written by males. Ethan goes back to the room to attempt to meditate on the fog again. He goes into a trance like state and later on, he opens up his eyes to see that he's back in the room. Unlike previous times, he has no recollection of what he saw that time while looking into the fog. As time passes people go to the monk cells to sleep (except for Mayla who decided to sleep in the pond). So between the time that dinner was over and going to sleep what did everyone, but Ethan and Mayla do? I'll do a write up for that and then move things along to morning.

About the only thing of consequence that Karima is apt to do right now is to ask if Brother J happens to have a spare Qur'an, since she is sadly without a copy, and it seems right for her to want to have one around in light of recent events. Whether she gets one or not she will probably just head to one of the rooms after that and relax until Phoebe catches up with her.

Astra's going to yank all the data from her gauntlet's biomonitors and passive sensors to see what she can learn about the visions. It's admittedly probably fruitless, and even she realizes this, but she's going to try anyway, see if there's any physical data. Mysticism doesn't really sit well with her. That said, she'll happily hook Karima up with a Qur'an if need be, although she doesn't have a printer.

Monastery of St. Leibowitz the Chosen Sitting next to Ethan as he meditates is Jenna. She goes into a trance, and later on when she comes out of it, she feels drained and physically tired. She has no recollection of what occurred in her vision this time. She decides it might be time to rest before attempting meditating again. Karima asks about a copy of the Qur'an. Brother J says he'll find a copy for her. Phoebe talks to Brother J about the vision. He listens as she describes what she saw. He says nothing for a couple minutes. And when he does speak, he says, "It sounds like there might be a barrier. It'd be in your mind. A barrier that is shielding you from being too connected from the visions. Very peculiar. I can't tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Only time will tell I guess." As Phoebe leaves to see Karima, Brother J gives her a copy of the Qur'an. He tells her its for Karima. When Karima gets the book. She finds that its a hand copied version of the book similar to what a Qur'an before printing presses were invented. The lack of technology used in the book should mean that the book is hundreds of years old. The book looks well used, but not that old. The condition of the book is quite remarkable, which leads Karima to think that it is less then a hundred years old. Astra's research and data from her gauntlet provides her with less then satisfactory answers. The only thing that turns up are unknown energy signatures in the areas where the fog occurs. She finds that she can match up the energy signature to the areas where the fog stands. However around ten feet into the fog, she can't get any readings. Eventually everyone made their way back to the furnished monk cells. The cells had all the comfort of an underground prison cell, but at least the rooms had doors on them instead of bars. With some effort those in the cells found ways of making the situation a little less unpleasant. Later on while everyone slept, they found themselves waking up to brother J shouting and pounding on the doors. "Wake up! We got a problem! Everyone get up to the dining room now. Hurry it up, there's no time to explain. A major problem just reared its head." Before anyone could stop and ask him what was up, he was gone. He headed up towards the garden where the group first encountered him. Mayla woke up seeing Brother J standing over her and speaking loudly. "Time to get up princess. We got a problem. I got your friends up and we're meeting in the dining room now!" Those in the cells can easily find their way up to the dining room

Astra Old habits die hard. That's what makes them habits, and so helpful for staying alive. Despite a long, long evening of sifting through data to no avail, the shouting still gets Astra up and out of bed like a flash. In the thirty seconds it takes her to get to the dining room, she both fully wakes up and gets fully back into her suit. She's still holding her boots, gauntlet and pack, but the suits on and sealed and she'd survive a breach. If there were one. "Problem?" she asks, as she enters and puts her extra items down, then shoves her helmet back onto its holder behind her head.

Phoebe St. Clair - Monastery of St. Leibowitz the Chosen Phoebe had listened with interest to what Brother J had had to say, but after gave her leave she couldn't help but admit to herself that her questions still cried out in search of answers. The idea of a barrier in her mind--some kind of mental block, perhaps a side-effect of her journey through the myriad, or simply a result of growing up in a world filled with uncertainty and danger. Karima's reaction to the holy book she brought from Brother J's library lightened her mood for a time, but by the time she settled down to sleep still in utili and combat bracks--the monks hadn't minded cold accommodations, it seemed--her mind was hardly at ease. Waking up by a rapping at the door and a hard yell didn't calm her much. At least that was familiar from drills and nightmares of answering a late-night vox call only to hear the automatic attendant alerting her that Case Grey was active. All Virginian reserve personnel were expected to be on the move within two minutes of the alert being raised. With no weapons to worry about, Phoebe managed it in less than one. She carried all her equipment with her as she left the cell--who knew if she would ever see it again otherwise. Nevertheless, as she hurried along the monastery's stone corridors with Karima in tow, she couldn't help but worry about the lack of weapons. Unless Brother J was fond of highly inappropriate pranks, the lack of firepower left her feeling decidedly vulnerable. "I'm hale," Phoebe said as she skidded into the dining room to find nearly everyone else there. "What's the situation?"

Karima The book - the Book, perhaps more properly - was a more than welcome surprise. And perhaps more so, the form in which it arrived. Karima couldn't help but think of such a text as almost priceless, given the age and condition, but perhaps out here such things did not have the same value. It was a sacred thing, and a historical artifact without comparison by her standards. Of course, more than all that, the most welcome was the one who brought it to her and shared the chilly, foreign monk's cell with her. The wake-up call, by contrast, was most unwelcome. Despite there being so little Karima needed to do before leaving, she was still slower to wake and to be on the move than Phoebe was. It was times like this that reminded her she was a civilian, even if she spent most of her life in places most civilians would not dare go. Still, it does not take her that long to gather what little she brought along - just longer. "Sorry," she says apologetically as she finishes collecting herself, and then they're running. Her eyes don't seem to stop moving back and forth, and the muscles of her limbs remain tense the whole way - at least the night before, Mac had warned them they would get such a rude awakening. This was something else. Finally, when all are in one place again, she manages only one other word. "What," Karima exclaims, tone indicating she'd intended to say more, but in her present state it's all she cares to say.

Monastery of St. Leibowitz the Chosen "O.K. Looks like everyone is here." Brother J tells the assembled group. Brother J stood before them looking much like he did before they went to sleep. He didn't look as though he had just woken up from sleep. "The reason I woke you up in the middle of the night is because something entered the monastery. Know how I mentioned that you should be careful where you're going, so that you don't end up on some alternate world? Yeah, the same passages that allow you to go places, work the other way around too. Things can enter the monastery through one of the hallways. It doesn't happen much, but when it does happen things are pretty hairy here. I don't know what came through the fog. Could be friendly or it could be hostile. We need to find it and figure out which it is." Brother J looks around at the group. "I see you're lacking much in the weapon department. I can loan you some of mine. I've managed to acquire a few things for defense. Come on." Brother leads them out of the dining room and down a short hall. He walks up to a wall and feels around for something on the wall. When Brother J finds a small protrusion on the wall, he pushes it. The wall begins to move inward. The sound of metal gears can be heard as the wall opens up to a dim room. Inside the thirty by thirty foot room is a stock pile of melee and primitive missile weapons of all kinds. Some of the weapons are displayed on the walls, while others are stored on shelves. A quick glance at the weapons reveals that they range in condition from heavily used to ornate. "I hope you can find something in here that you can use to arm yourselves. After you go through the armory I'll tell you what I need you to do." Any weapon from the characters book and the low tech books that is TL 4 or lower can be found here. When choosing a weapon, please specify whether your character is grabbing something with battle wear showing, no battle wear showing, or ornate. The weapons range from cheap to presentation quality. Also various weapons might have other qualities to them. If anyone wants to try to use some skill to figure out what's what, then post what you think is a relevant skill and we'll go from there.

Mayla Relshan - Monastery Armory Mayla pulls a hair ribbon out of her pocket and ties her hair back in a pony tail. Safety first, of course. She frowns as she examines the weapons, looking for something even a little familiar to her. "Well, my excuse is that it is terribly rude to take a weapon into someone else's home. Though I suppose exceptions could have been made if we had any forewarning. My goodness, this whole 'infinite worlds' thing is such a hassle, isn't it." She finds a curved sword that somewhat resembles those carried by police and military officers back home. She unsheathes it, holds it in both hands, and takes a few practice swings after ensuring that no one is close to her. Satisfied, she sheathes it and ties the sash around her waist to secure it. Just in case, she also locates a sheathed knife and secures that to her waist as well. Mayla has acquired a Long Knife and a Late Katana from Low-Tech. She is employing Metallurgy/TL5-15 to examine the weapons for corrosion or indications that they were made of cheap metal. BattleMaster fucked around with this message at 06:03 on Nov 1, 2013 |

Karima Dr. Bishara frowns as Brother J explains the situation. Dimly, she was surprised by how quickly she was awake and alert, but that thought was far from the forefront of her mind. Instead, there was the problem at hand. At least it was close quarters, so having left her gear back in Aranub was no problem - but then, the 'intruder' could be anything, and maybe close quarters was no blessing after all. Following Brother J in silence, Karima eyes the little armory that he has collected, raising an eyebrow but saying not a thing. After a moment's thought, she walks over to where a sturdy-looking, curved knife hangs. "If the intruder is anything like us - a person - they are likely scared half to death," Karima says finally, plucking the knife off the wall and testing its weight. "If not, I would hate to try our luck with these, but it must be done." "The question is how to proceed, I suppose. If it is a someone, then we may well be best served being loud in as many languages as we all know. If it is a something," she says, thinking aloud, "that might still draw it out, but that only helps if we can avoid being taken by surprise. A risk." Turning to the others, Karima puts the question to them. "So what do we do?" Going with a Kukri here, because they're awesome.

Mayla Relshan - Monastery Armory "Alerting them to our presence would be counterproductive. Obviously, making sure that we have surprise on our side instead of alerting them to our presence would be the best way to approach this. If we are the ones who act first, then we can gauge the situation and choose how to proceed. I think due caution is needed, especially after our encounter with the creature from the fog or those things in Chicago." BattleMaster fucked around with this message at 06:00 on Nov 1, 2013 |

Phoebe St. Clair - Monastery of St. Leibowitz the Chosen Phoebe's heart sank as Brother J explained the situation, but she was hardly surprised by it. She'd already seen rooms that extended partway into the fog, and heard his warnings about doors that led to other worlds that unwise travellers might never find their way back from--of course the monastery could be compromised. She wondered if Mac had realized that when he'd dropped them off outside. Defending a strongpoint of unknown layout against an unknown enemy of unknown disposition... it was the recipe for a slaughter if they weren't careful. She couldn't imagine how Brother J willingly lived alone in such a dangerous place--or what tools he had at his disposal to blunt the edge of that danger. She wasn't eager to find out. The monastery's armory was a museum in its own right, a riot of antique weapons from across centuries, cultures, and worlds, and for a moment she was transfixed by it all. Here a wickedly curved sword with its blade beaten gold as the crescent moon, there a trident that could have come from Neptune's war room, and all around rows of knives and quivers of arrows that could have outfitted hundreds of medieval warriors. For her part, she drifted toward an array of crossbows. Apart from modern scopes and lighter, stronger materials, the crossbows she'd practiced shooting in the hills around Harmony weren't that different from the ones the proud yeomen of Virginia had raised against the king's men in 1791, or from those used in the Hundred Years' War, for that matter. Range would be a definite advantage against an unknown foe, even if it would take precious seconds to reload after every shot. Stupid, stupid, stupid! Why couldn't I have at least brought the viper? Her service pistol had helped deal cleanly with the last threat that had emerged from the fog. It wasn't doing her much good in its holster back in Aranub. She rubbed the stock of one of the crossbows, hard and smooth wood that hadn't had a chance to go rotten, with the initials "AB" carved into it by an evidently shaky hand. As she did so, her gaze drifted over to the rack of spears--there were a few one-handed ones leaning in a rack, about the same size as the rifles with which she'd practiced tolede drills. As a last-ditch defense, one of them would do well. "It's all fine," she said to herself, "but I'd still rather my gun." Phoebe is looking at acquiring a TL2 crossbow and a TL0 spear. Machinist-TL8/14 to see if there's anything of particular note about their construction that might indicate how well-put together they are, or anything else useful about them. Jenna "Well this looks familiar," Jenna says, rushing into the room and sifting through the arsenal. She searches for the best knife she can find, and as many throwing knives as she can manage. When she's finished she has enough steel strapped to her to take on a small army. "Alright then, what are we dealing with?" Grabbing a Long Knife and as many throwing knives as I can carry. Ethan "Understood really, makes sense. Can't have just a one way connection right?" He says without much regret slowly rubbing his chin as he looks at the weapons. Taking one of the knives that looked to be in good condition and slipping it in its holster on his belt. Adjusting his belt it was perfectly in reach to be quickly drawn in case he needs to go into melee in a moments notice. "Um, dear, Astra did you happen to bring your present along? I would gladly use it. I'm pretty good shot with a rifle, a pistol might not be so different. If you don't mind me borrowing one of course." He said with a smile and a peck on her cheek. Using Knife 14 to pick out a solid well maintained knife, as that skill deals with the maintenance and care of the weapon. Also asking Astra if she would mind giving him one of the laser pistols, since he has a 12 by default!

"Of course," she tells Ethan, smiling some and chuckling. She takes the second pistol out and checks the safety, passing it over. "Back home, there's not much difference. Not in accuracy, anyway. It's mostly about power output and charge capacity. Light doesn't bend. Okay, it does, but not in a way that matters for shooting. Over medium distances, anyway."

Monastery of St. Leibowitz the Chosen Weapons are found and when most of the group found suitable weapons, Brother J talks. "Here's the plan. I expect the intruder is going to be walking down one of two hallways." Brother J crouches down and draws a diagram of the halls. At the end of a long hall there's a Y-intersection. "I want to send one group to the left and one group to the right. I'll stay at the intersection to keep an eye on both of the hallways. I'll let you split up, however you feel like." In the Banefog Laguna Casador awoke groggily and somewhat achingly from the cold hard surface underneath him. Drawing himself up to a sitting position, he clutched his head, opened his eyes, and looked around. He seemed to be in some sort of tunnel, with asphault marked like a bike path underneath him and flourescent lighting above. To one side lay Steele, his pet name for his motorcycle, smashed to pieces. No fire, no smoke, just looking as if someone had taken a sledgehammer and whacked at it for time out of mind. As he stared at the twisted wreck, he started to remember...oh god, he'd actually done it... Laguna's memories posted:
Laguna shakes his head again, waking up from his reverie. So, he'd done it. Driven himself off a cliff. And now he was dead. Funny, he thought, as he looked as his clothing, I guess you could, in fact, take it with you. With a sigh, he eases himself up, takes a moment to stretch, and gathers what isn't completely broken from the scattered cargo of his motorcycle, stuffing what he can into his luckily undamaged bag. Fully packed and ready to face judgement, he walks down the tunnel. It's not long before he relaxes noticeably and spots the light at the end. As he continues his methodical pace he even begins to sing: "As I walked out in the streets of Laredo, as I walked out in Laredo one day, I spied a young cowboy all wrapped in white linen, wrapped in white linen and cold as the--" He stops abruptly as he sees a hallway of a building with stone bricks ahead. The light he sees seems to be a torch sconce on the wall. He walks into the hallway of the stone building and leaves the fog behind. Laguna 2.0 is back in. Here is the info on the weapons, Mayla's weapons are of fine quality. Karima finds a kukri of good quality, Phoebe found a spear and her choice of a fowling crossbow (dam is thr+5 imp), Jenna found a fine quality long knife and five good quality throwing knives.

Ethan He nods seriously taking in Astra's words. It couldn't be too much different, but it was very light compared to the more comfortable weight from the carbine. "Gotcha, hopefully we won't have to test that theory. Yeah, I guess guns would not be really take away from the peace and quiet here wouldn't they?" He says with a bit of a bemused grin. The knife on his belt he felt he was pretty good in the defensive close range. "I think we are ready, but what are we going to be doing? It is going to be hard to fight in these narrow corridors." Laguna Resona "Mmmph...argh..." Laguna stumbles blindly through the infinite fogbank, having long lost the orienting beacon of his dying bike's headlamp. Where was the trail? Where was the sun? Where was anything? He'd probably managed to run into some piece of cacti or tumbleweed that'd blown onto the road...or had he driven off a cliff by accident? Or not by accident? And he could've sworn he'd heard a voice that sounded an awful lot like his singing the old cowboy ballad Streets of Laredo somewhere off to his...right? Left? Dammit, he had NOT been drinking before he'd gotten on the bike. He'd run clean outta whiskey two days ago! So why was he so drat confused?! ...he wasn't dead, was he? A sudden twinge from his pack digging into his shoulder answers: not likely! After a few more fitful starts and stops, he finally sees a dim light in the distance, and the voice that sounds like his seems to echo from the diffusing signal. He stands up and starts walking at full stride towards the light, answering the singing with the next lines of the lyric: "Twas once in the saddle I used to be dashing, twas once in the saddle I used to be--eh?!" The fog suddenly and abruptly disappears, replaced by the light of an ancient flambeau on walls of stone. He turns back and notices the fog coming to an almost deliberate and sudden end right in the center of a hallway. "The hell is this?" he thinks aloud with a western patois. "This is one drat queer inn...but I'll take it over that doggone fog!" He takes a few more tentative steps past the torch, cupping the hand not holding his pack to his mouth. "Hello in there!" he calls. "Mind if I meet the proprietor of this here shelter?" Alright, back in the game! Let's hope Laguna 2.0 doesn't die quite so fast this time! Davin Valkri posted:

Karima Well, thought Karima as she considered the developing teams, I suppose sometimes, decisions make themselves. It made a decent amount of sense, to be sure, though the pistols being brought out gets a raised eyebrow from Dr. Bishara - along with a silent curse at her own lack of preparedness. At least she could resolve to not make such a mistake twice. And, for that matter, to have a word with Mac about what he had and hadn't told them. "Be careful," she cautions to Ethan and Jenna as they quickly move out. "And try not to shoot first. Let us not look for a fight unless we need it, no?" With that, Karima looks to the others. "So I suppose we should begin, hm?"

Phoebe St. Clair - Monastery of St. Leibowitz the Chosen She could've spent an entire day appraising the contents of Brother J's armory, but she was keenly aware that every second she spent in indecision made it more likely that whatever had come out of the fog would get in a position to threaten them. She picked up a well-made crossbow and a strong-seeming spear. By the time she managed to improvise a back-carrying sling for the spear, Ethan, Astra, and Jenna had already knotted together. That was well enough, since she wouldn't have easily trusted Karima's well-being to anyone else, and at least she'd be able to do her best to keep Mayla from being killed by whatever it was out there. "We should," Phoebe said, nodding at Karima. "Let's take it slow. We've no concept of the intruders, numbers, capabilities, or intentions. Horrid ball altogether. Just don't let yourself be surprised and we should do fine. Remember what happened to Laguna." She took a breath to steady herself and headed down the hall, toward the branch that would be her responsibility. She was grateful not to see any whispering streamers of fog.

On her face is some degree of concern, but her body seems oddly relaxed. "We just need to be alert."
