Psycho-Pass is an original anime that has been known about since March of this year. After months of no information being released it was later revealed to be a cyberpunk anime produced by Production I.G and written by Gen Urobuchi.

Story
In the world of Psycho-Pass, it is possible to instantly measure a person's state of mind and their personality. People who are found to be very predisposed to committing crimes are removed from society. However, people who have the mindset of criminals and also have good detective skills are occasionally offered jobs as enforcers of the law, as their understanding of the criminal mind can give them an advantage in stopping and solving crimes. The executive officers that manage these enforcers are society's top elites, who have been measured to have stable personalities with very low predisposition for committing crimes. These agents of law enforcement are equipped with guns that are capable of measuring a person's state of mind, automatically selecting the proper amount of force to use in response.

Main Characters

Shinya Kogami (VA: Tomokazu Seki) is an enforcement officer who belongs to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation Department. He is trained to investigate everything in detail to the limits of even his own body and powers. He is well-respected by his colleagues. Shinya himself, even though he is an enforcement officer, has a high level of criminality potential as measured by the system they use. It seems his past is also tied to an unsolved bizarre murder case.

Akane Tsunemori (VA: Kana Hanazawa) is a surveillance officer in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation Department. She is pushy and soft on the outside, but cunning on the inside. Akane is a fresh grad who enters the force as an executive officer because of her high aptitude scores.

Staff and Other Info
Chief Director: Katsuyuki Motohiro (Known for Bayside Shakedown, a popular live action series.)
Director: Naoyoshi Shiotani (Blood-C: The Last Dark)
Scenario: Gen Urobuchi (Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero)
Original Character Design: Akira Amano (Hitman Reborn!)
Studio: Production I.G
Number of Episodes: 22
Where to view: No streaming options seemed to be planned so far, but I doubt we'll have to worry about fansubs if it comes down to it.
Initial Air Date: October 11th, 2012
Official Website: http://www.psycho-pass.com/

Personal Opinions
Gen Urobuchi writing a cyberpunk story is something that hasn't happened in quite some time (Kikokugai in 2002 and his Equlibrium fanfiction in 2003, Blassreiter doesn't count as his initial ideas were rejected and he ended up writing less than a third of it). I try to maintain an air of cautious optimism about things that I really want to see, but holy poo poo I am so hyped right now. Production I.G is doing straight up cyberpunk with adult characters again and Gen Urobuchi is writing it!

Or we could potentially get another Blassreiter, but from interviews with Urobuchi and Motohiro that doesn't seem to be the case. Urobuchi appears to have a good degree of creative control on this project.

I haven't watched it yet, but it sounds like it's pretty typical Urobuchi, i.e. if I liked Madoka, Fate/zero and his VNs I'll probably dig this too. Does that sound about right?

Just finished watching this myself and not quite.

I'd say if you enjoyed Kikokugai and/or Saya no Uta or all of Fate/Zero, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this. If you only liked Madoka Magica or just the Waver/Rider parts of Fate/Zero and disliked the rest of it (or only enjoyed it ironically), you might find this hard to enjoy. If you disliked all of those you might as well get out now, because there probably won't be anything for you here.

Good Things
Backgrounds and CGI look gorgeous. The cityscape reinforces the cyberpunk dystopia feeling very well.
Voice acting is good. Akira Ishida really seems to be enjoying this.
This is old-school Urobuchi in full force, it reminded me a lot more of Kikokugai than anything else he's written in the past seven or so years. This can also be a bad thing, if you're not a fan of very hammy, over the top action things.

Bad Things
Urobuchi has a tendency to frontload all of his exposition somewhere into the first two chapters of whatever he's doing. Usually he provides a cool hook to keep you around for that, but the opening action sequence didn't do a very good job of that (compare Kikokugai's opening fight scene followed by detailed explanations of cyber kung-fu and androids, Saya no Uta's best opening scene ever in anything followed by doctor appointments explaining things Fuminori should have already known, and Madoka's opening scene and the first witch barrier followed by most of episode 2 being explanations about things). Still, this wasn't anywhere near as exposition-y as the first chapter/episode of Fate/Zero, and that turned out just fine. If we're still into heavy exposition by the end of episode 3 or 4, I'll be worried though.

WickedIcon please stop posting bad posts. Good_Haro's allowed to not like things and she raises a few good points as to why she doesn't like the show. Some of these points are even things that people who are enjoying the show and are looking forward to the rest agree on (overloaded exposition, some actions near the end are kind of dumb, etc.).

This is an interesting article that goes into some pretty interesting details about the potential origin of Psycho-Pass as a fanfic visual novel Urobuchi wrote a while ago after he saw the movie Equilibrium.

If the stuff discussed in that post hold true, than that pretty much explains exactly why Psycho-Pass is so terrible.

Equilibrium is one of my favorite movies and Jouka no Monshou was fun so I don't see what the problem is.

Giggily posted:

Gun Kata is from Equilibrium. Like, reading over that dude's article it sounds like the VN he made was literally just Equilibrium fanfiction with nothing changed.

Jouka no Monshou is Equilibrium fanfiction that takes place before the events of the movie and is basically just a big gun kata sperge fest. It's great.

I liked the second episode. The infodump was still there, but not as drastic or as jarring as in the first, and the Enforcers seem like cool dudes. There were a couple of dropped hints to later plot threads I hope come up. Kogami not being EDGY all the time was refreshing too.

This one was kind of weird since it was so obvious. You have the old guy saying "my keen understanding of the criminal mind makes me think that the guy getting the corporate approved abuse might end up lashing out at his coworkers." Then the other guy calling him an idiot and insisting that only the computer can tell them who is a criminal.

It's interesting that apparently bullying and assaulting people clears your psy profile, but being abused makes you a criminal. So far every "criminal" has been driven to it by the social pressure of being labeled a criminal. It's like no one in this universe understands cause and effect.

I also don't really get why they didn't just grab the awkward guy and drag him into the parking lot for a scan. Sending him on a robot rampage seems like a bad move.

Overall I just don't get why anyone did what they did in the episode.

The point was to prove that he was the one that committed the murder. It was obvious that he was likely to commit a crime, the point was that they were being cock-blocked in their investigation and needed a quick way to prove that he was capable of committing the murder. Dragging him out into the street only would have proved that he had a high enough crime coeffecient to be stunned, it wouldn't have proved that he programmed the robots to go into full murder mode.

Urobuchi is the author of the VN that the Phantom TV anime was an adaptation of, it was the first work released by Nitro+. He also wrote three episodes of the adaptation.

This was more Gainax completely changing what they wanted to do with the story after it started airing.

Urobuchi likes to be sure of the ending before he starts writing a story, this is why his works typically have really strong endings but sometimes have weak starts. From what I've read, the director has already read the script for the last episode and really liked it, so I don't think that the beginning of the first episode will be changed by the time we reach it.

Kind of makes Kougami's attachment to him seem weird, but then again, Kougami was kind of a shithead for the stunt he pulled with the Dominator this episode too. It's like somehow after Sasayama died Gino inherited both his and Kougami's shittiness.

It wasn't a bad episode, but to be honest, I kind of feel like punching the staff for letting the cliffhanger from the end of last episode go on for an extra week.:argh:

I'm with Silver on this one. While the idea of Sibyl being something more could be interesting, it really doesn't have to be anything more than what it appears to be on the surface for the show to work.

I got the BD set in a couple of days ago, it's nice. I'm rewatching the series now and it feels a lot better paced if you marathon it as opposed to waiting weekly for each episode.

Footage from Motohiro, Shiotani, and Wada's trip to Sakuracon is included, along with a private interview with them. Some highlights (somewhat paraphrasing here, just copying stuff I talked about in an IRC channel):

  • Motohiro's original plan for Psycho-Pass (before the project even had a name) was to make a police robot animation. The intent seemed to have been to make something like Patlabor except with a greater focus on drama. They brought up Patlabor a lot during the interview as a source of inspiration (along with Ghost in the Shell), even if Psycho-Pass ended up being very different in a lot of ways.
  • "I wanted it to be a robot animation, an ensemble play, and futuristic" - Motohiro on talking to Urobuchi about what he wanted the project to be like.
  • Until Urobuchi was brought onto the project, no one had any real clear cut plan beyond "we want to make a sci-fi cop drama with robots". Urobuchi is the one that came up with the setting, plot, characters, etc. It appears giant robots kinda fell out of the planning around then, although there are still things like cyborgs and killer drones in the show.
  • Wada: "I think Psycho Pass has the most lovable characters out of any of Urobuchi's works".
  • They commented on how the American and Japanese fanbases don't seem to be that different, and that there are a lot of girls who seem to like Ginoza and Masaoka on both sides of the Pacific.
  • Stuff brought up as inspiration by Shiotani: Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor (they brought up Patlabor a ton), Brazil, Minority Report, Gattaca. One of them also brought up how Urobuchi compared Psycho-Pass to the works of Phillp K. Dick while it was being written.
  • Shiotani: "We all had our strengths we contributed to the project. Urobuchi, for example, is good at depicting death."
  • Shiotani is kind of adorable. During the panel he talked about how much he loves seeing fans enjoying the show. He's like "Oh wow my show really is actually popular, I feel so happy".
  • Motohiro mentioned that the sound was remixed for the BD/DVD release, cited the bass being heavier as one example. They wanted to improve the sound to the point where it could be shown in a movie theater.
  • Shiotani: "I'll work on a sequel as soon as Wada gives me cash. Please buy BDs"
  • There were interviews with a few fans at Sakuracon asking them what they liked about Psycho-Pass. My favorite response: "It had very interesting characters who got to die. If you're dead, you were probably a good character."

This was just the first part, apparently there's a second part on a later disc. I'll post about that too if I see anything interesting.
