Gen Urobuchi doing cyberpunk? Last time this happened we got Kikokugai, which loving owns. (I'm not counting his Equilibrium fanfiction because Equilibrium isn't really cyberpunk also I refuse to believe that exists.)

I haven't watched it yet, but it sounds like it's pretty typical Urobuchi, i.e. if I liked Madoka, Fate/zero and his VNs I'll probably dig this too. Does that sound about right?

jonjonaug posted:Just finished watching this myself and not quite. Well, I loved Kikokugai (look at the first post I made in this thread ffs) and the erection Fate/zero gave me knew no bounds, so yeah, I'll probably dig this then. Thanks! e: Just watched the first episode. This is a little rough, but honestly it's got a poo poo-ton of potential. Does anyone else get major Dredd vibes from this? Not Judge Dredd as a whole, but specifically the movie from this year. Tsunemori and Kogami basically strike me as being bizarro Anderson and Dredd, and a lot of the visuals and music were pretty much lifted straight from that movie. Also jesus gently caress, is the massive hateboner everyone has for Urobuchi serious or is it just anime pseudo-hipsterism since most of what he's done is so universally beloved? He honestly hasn't done a single thing that I haven't loving loved, and the only thing where I can actually articulate a reason why anyone would dislike it is Fate/zero, which I thought was a little exposition-heavy and slow at times. To be honest, I only loved Fate/zero from the first episode because I had already read the F/sn visual novel and knew it was going to get awesome sooner or later, and only loved Madoka from the first episode because I got in really late and had some of the early batshit craziness spoiled for me. Otherwise it would have taken a three-episode test for both. But that's neither here nor there.

Good_Haro posted:Yes, clearly no one could actually dislike any of Urobuchi's stuff, because he's popular and you've loved everything he's done so, obviously all us haters are just hipsters hating on Mr. Popular. You know, none of us who didn't like the show have, like, explained reasons why we felt the episode was flawed beyond redemption in detail. Did I seriously make you angry enough to drop 10 bucks on a red title? Jesus gently caress, I should never underestimate neckbeard rage.

Good_Haro posted:Nope, not me. But if it makes you feel better you can continue to believe that. Given that you're the only one who absolutely vomited with anger at me really liking Urobuchi's stuff, and I've also seen you melt the gently caress down in other threads over people disagreeing with you (how's the gay rape porn translation going, btw?), I'd say I'm gonna continue to believe that. You know, I really, really wanted to like this show and there's still a lot of poo poo I love about it, but between the weird pacing and the loving fanservice otaku-pandering doctor (which I'm not sure why I'm so annoyed by) this is getting dangerously close to failing the 3-episode test for me. I do genuinely love the art direction (at least where the settings and tech are concerned) and it's got a lot of potential, but if episode 2 is a sign of things to come, it doesn't look like it'll live up to that. I know, I know, foot planted firmly in mouth, etc. I'm kind of hoping we get another situation like Madoka where it's slow for a couple episodes then massive amounts of out of nowhere, but honestly I don't see that happening, and the thing that made it work really well in Madoka (the bait and switch) isn't really in effect here so I'm not sure if it would really save the show that much if it did happen.

Sakurazuka posted:Maybe I missed something, but how was the doctor fan-servicey, other than obviously having a pair of boobs? Between her character design and her dialogue, she came off as a lot more sexualized than any of the other female characters and it was jarring as hell. The pacing is a bigger issue, honestly, but that didn't exactly help (surprisingly given that I usually do not give the tiniest poo poo about fanservice). Tuxedo Catfish posted:If she's the only one, doesn't that make it characterization and more appropriate than if every female character in the show were portrayed that way? I'll concede your point on that first bit. It is definitely better than if every female character were portrayed that way. The thing is, though, we see another woman on the CID staff and she's nothing but professional. She's kind of cold towards Akane, but for perfectly understandable reasons, and the contrast between her and Akane establishes what you were talking about just fine on its own. As far as it being otaku pandering or not, I suppose it's just my own cynicism giving me that impression; when I see a woman in a show who has her breasts hanging out and makes sexual remarks towards the female lead, I assume it's being done to sell more figmas and body pillows, not just for the sake of having an interesting character.

Yeah don't get me wrong I've actually gotten annoyed at goons for instinctively being afraid of boobs in their anime before. I suppose it's mostly just an issue of how it's handled, and for some reason it really rubbed me the wrong way in this when it generally doesn't.
