I don't think it quite matches Spirit Circle (although SY has a better ending), but it's a drat strong number 2.

Gonna read the new thing, hopefully it's not the mess that Planet Wish was.

E: gently caress me a QUARTERLY RELEASE?!

I am ok with a quarterly release as long as they are 70+ pages like this one was. I am just happy to have a new Mizukami manga, and I am really interested in his take on the magical girl genre. I could see this manga getting really dark really fast.

Content spoiler for the first chapter:
You have a town mayor selling orphan girls into slavery to keep his magic water doohickey and a character with a death wish. The magical girl stuff comes at the very end.

I translated the new thing.. Personally I think it's a bit of an improvement over them duke 4chan boys but I may be biased.

The framing of the whole intro is wild. There's all these intersecting characters who throw out all kinds of backstory and we just kind of blow past them because they need to back the gently caress up, we're having A Day.
The fairy echoes so many of the narrator's (future Solte) lines so succinctly that it's hard not to see some kind of time travel or reading the future kind of thing going on here, too. She apparently even resembles Saliera closely enough that Solte makes the mistake at first glance. The fairy also really likes yelling. Mysteries!
The art is really grabbing me, I haven't read the Planet With manga (saw the anime) so maybe I'm missing out on where Mizukami's at these days, but compared to the material I know, I feel like there's a poo poo-ton more detailed penwork in the scenery and backdrops, and while a lot of the faces are pretty wonky and not as sharply defined, he's put a lot more work into their expressiveness, and especially including some more subtle expressions.

I'm thinking Solte's full name is basically Salty Sugar, which unless I'm mistaken, is mahou shojou as gently caress

And yes, they are saying the new chapter is due April 20. It may be a quarterly release, at least while he's still doing Planet With.

First thing that came to mind was El-Hazard regarding this plot point, which could be fun depending of how nuts Mizukami goes with it.

I went into reading that blind, and certainly wasn't expecting what I got. I was initially also thinking time travel stuff going on with Saliera at first, with it being a future Solte being sent back through wandering into a magical pollution zone, but the talk with the mayor nixed that pretty quick.

Considering how Mizukami's past stuff has turned out, I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes overall. Thanks for the translation!

Solte is back, and she is one bitter kid lol

I don't really know how Solte guesses that the "Black" in question is Uncle Black specifically, there aren't really any clues before that scene or in the first chapter. No such thing as coincidences I guess.

Planet With has both the anime and manga that were made concurrently, but aside from that, unfortunately not. I enjoyed it decently well.

Like Julias said, Planet With, which i looooved.

Crunchyroll manga has up to chapeter 25, i'm not sure if more is coming out, or if they dropped it, or if he's still working on it, and if he is if it diverges from the anime at all. I follow him on twitter, but don't always bust out the google translate to see what he's up to.

Planet With is still running monthly in Young King Ours. Maybe Solte will pick up once PW is done or it might not be that long. Better than the series with 1 page per year.

Solte the Traveler, part 3

There are some good action panels in this one but god drat that one of firo flying upside down takes the cake :popeye:

While it's fun to learn about the world through the eyes of Solte as she discovers it, a lot of the worldbuilding being done en media res means we kind of have to wait another 3 months for the next chapter to learn anything about the stuff they introduce without a word, which is a little bit annoying.

I love pretty much everything about this except the schelude, because I pretty much have to reread the entire series each time a new chapter releases. And I'm completely fine with it, which speaks volumes about how much I like it.

Mizukami is still doing Planet With, with this being more-or-less a side job, right? I hope he fully focuses on Solte once Planet With finishes and upgrades it to monthly series.

Nope, just announced simultaneously. Basically, Mizukami spent the year after Spirit Circle ended drawing the drafts for the whole manga so they could be used as storyboards for the anime, but he didn't actually start drawing the finalized chapters until sometime after the Nihonmatsu Siblings ended (pretty much the whole point of that series was that he needed something short to kill time while he was waiting for the anime production to ramp up).
The Planet With manga is still coming out monthly, the Crunchyroll simulpub seems to be around episode 9-ish of the anime so there's maybe around 10 or so chapters left.

Solte 4. For a mole, he can really sneer when it comes down it.

The schedule on this is really stinging. I can practically feel so much of the Mizukami Magic just lurking around every corner; I actually do like the mechanism of this being hyper-focused on Solte's perspective in the middle of a living world where these ancillary characters keep showing up with their own dramas and histories, so a lot of what we learn about the world comes as Solte discovers it, but it seems like every time they dangle a little meat for us or hint at some worldbuilding we have to postpone for another three months. I think Mizukami does an okay job of picking up the thread from the chapter to chapter, but a lot of the tasty details keep getting kicked down the line.

I do like this one for the focus on Solte's internal conflict. We have seen some hints of this, but the dream sequence really lays out her longing vs her trauma. Dream Solte calls Black "Uncle" for I think the first time :3: and the one panel at the top of the page where her expression softens and she starts to lose her words got me a little:frogbon:

Remember Solte? It's still going! Chapter 6

Adventure! :swoon:

So this one has the callback to another story, Bucket's Isekai Essay, which presumably is what Mizukami was teasing in the interview. I originally translated the protaganist's name in that one as Gren Jinmel, but that could just as easily have been Guren, as in a certain codex? Written in indecipherable script (Japanese)? and filled with illustrations??? :aaa: Does it mean that story is set in Solte's future? Or past? Who knows! the dog guy in that one could also have Spiritus, same as Black. Apparently a known quantity in Bucket-world, though it's never given a name.

Everett being a title and not a name is a little awkward. It seems to throw Kiril off, too. The top results in Japanese are for physicist Hugh Everett, and his Many-Worlds Interpretation. Can't say for sure if it's a direct reference, but the name might be thematically relevant - We already know there is some time travel shenanigans going on here, but the gaps in Celen's knowledge could be explained by having traveled back to a branch point and landing on a different world-line altogether! And if Black is Everett Black, maybe he crossed over from a world where he had Spiritus?

Solte Chapter 7
Backstory for Uncle Black! And some pretty wild hints about the world of Solte itself...

So its possibly Earth, that was at some point in time completely zooted by too much magic, or else... An alternate version of Earth? We know that there are people coming from actual Earth, or at least Gren (née Bucket), Black, and the astronomer Everett who wrote the book did.

Cylinder world activated the Mizukami centers of my brain and reminded me immediately of the colony from Nell, My Fist, and Ginga Thunder, but I'm not sure how that would work. Earth was still around in those stories, even if Ginga Thunder cleaned it out. Maybe they could have just made the colony New Earth and psychically swapped them out or merged them somehow? Or maybe its just a coincidence

edit: If we go by the last year, "winter" probably means a January 25th release for the next one
