As far as the "conservative candidates who pass anti-gay legislation are actually repressing their own homosexuality and vindictively deciding anyone else should too" goes... Honestly I find it less depressing than the alternative "they don't actually give a poo poo either way and are just exploiting something for votes" because at least then there's something human about the action instead of calculated power grabbing
